A local weekly market has been shut down by the Nigerian Army in Adamawa State over fear of attacks by bandits and other terror elements.
Military sources told SaharaReporters that Golongtabal market in the Gombi Local Government Area was shut down to avert infiltration by terrorist groups.
The Brigade Commander of the 23 Brigade, Yola, Brig Gen Aminu Garba, disclosed that the measure was taken to safeguard the community.
He said, “The market was closed based on intelligence report. It was closed to prevent terrorists from wreaking havoc in the community.”
Villagers within the vicinity of the market were seen counting their losses as a result of the closure.
The Chairman of the market sellers’ association, Anniya Luka, said since the closure of the market, things had not been easy.
Also speaking, another trader, Hajaratu James, urged the state government to wade into the matter.
"We hope those concerned will reconsider this closure which is negatively affecting us as a people and community", James said.
Gombi town which borders the Sambisa hideout of Boko Haram had been annexed in 2014, when seven Local Government Areas of Adamawa State were occupied by the Boko Haram terrorists.
