The African Origin Of Christmas

By Ramses Osiris

On December 25 (in some places a day earlier and yet in others on January 6), millions of Christians all over the world celebrate the birthday of  their  Lord and Saviour, Jesus the Christ, who is said to have incarnated some 2000 years ago. It is a very special occasion, marked with church services, family reunion, music, dance, sumptuous meals and presents for friends and loved ones, as well as  kindness to all and sundry.

Usually a beautifully adorned Christmas tree stands in a strategic corner in the living room, with excited kids, scampering all over the place, anxiously waiting for their gifts. A sweet fragrance of all sorts of delicacies fills the air. It´s a good season to be merry.

Interestingly, most Christians, especially Black Christians hardly know the true origin of this December global event. It must be remembered that until 350CE , when Pope Julius I moved the date to December, the Christian Church hierarchy randomly fixed Christmas in January, March, April, May or September, as if they didn´t know exactly when Jesus was supposed to have been born.

In Africa, December 25 was an age-old day of celebration, dating back several millenia- celebrating the birth or if you wish, the re-birth of the Sun, that had apparently disappeared at the zero hour of December 22,  the winter solstice. The winter solstice marks the lowest point of the Sun, marks the longest night and, accordingly, the shortest day of the year.
Right after that, daytime slowly but surely gets longer, until it gets really noticeable on December 25. One could say that the Sun was literally dead on Dec.22 and was re-born or had resurrected on December 25, after 3 days!

Dying and resurrecting after 3 days is a theme that is quite familiar to Christians. But the origin of it all lies once gain in Africa. By the way, “Christ“ is a title meaning the “Anointed One“. The etymological root word “KARAST“ (KRST) came from the process of embalming mummies in Ancient Egypt, which entailed “anointing“ by oil before burial. Osiris was the Christ, thousands of years before the white world practically usurped that designation.

The tradition of celebrating December 25 as the birthday of the African God Ra or Osiris or his Son Horus (Father and Son are One!) was prevalent and so strong  at the advent of White Christianity that the Christian Church fathers had to shift THEIR Christmas to the same date of the Africans, ostensibly to eclipse the original..

One should not forget that the Romans had the political and the military might to enforce their agenda. on the Africans. Emperors Constantine and Theodosius had banned the African religion under penalty of death, destroyed their temples, killed their priests and consigned the African religion to the privacy of their homes!

So, when you see a White Madonna and child (Mary and child Jesus) somewhere, you have to know that the original was Black: Isis and Horus. The name Jesus is not too far away the old Egyptian (read African) original : Iu-su:  the ever-becoming son. Mary, Maria, Miriam are all adulterations of the African “Meri“, meaning the “Beloved One“.

The Christmas tree represents the tree in Abydos in Egypt, which enveloped the coffin of Osiris, who had been killed by his evil brother God, SET. That tree bore beautiful fruits, the kind of which no one had seen hitherto. So, when you decorate your Christmas tree, you are actually re-enacting that African legend. SET is the root of later religious derivatives like Satan, Sheitan......

Millions of Black people grow up with white images of God, Mary, Jesus in their heads, thinking white is good, black is bad! What that does to their psyche and vulnerability can be seen in their 2000 years of tribulation since they lost power. People, who copied their religion came back hundreds of years later to brutally enslave, christianize and islamize them, calling them primitive and barbaric. That´s paradoxically ironic!

That is why it is pertinent for Black people to re-discover their true history in order to better appreciate themselves and view the alien influence in proper perspective.

Christmas is yet another African gift to the world.

@Osuagwu. I am glad for your comment. Africa is the only place where foreign religions were admitted without real problem. The Christians were killed by Romans, Jews etc but were not killed by the Nubians in Sudan, Ethiopians, Yorubas etc. I am proud of my African heritage and will stand up for it at anytime. In a well known story in Egbaland, before Henry Townsend came to abeokuta, Ifa Priests had told the leader of the Egbas in Abeokuta that some albinos will come and they should be accepted and welcome. By the time Henry Townsend came, he and his missionaries were told that they have been expecting them. So, he was dazed to know that this people whom he had wanted to preach God to had already known 'God'. That is to tell you that God has a space in the cavity of every human being whether you like it or not.

My grouse with Osiris is that he should not cheapen the faith of other people, he should not attack other people- the fact I say I won't accept images as God does not stop me from being an African and appreciating my African values and heritage. My fathers have been living in quarters and building structures while the Europeans were living in CAVES. Even in 1959, France did not have a television station but Western Nigerian already had!

ON AFRICA AND XMAS

@Rommel, Kennedy Okonkwo, Adebowole, etc. You need to be much better educated before you can objectively comment on what Osiris (in a way sacrilegious name for one to call himself) has written. The scientific and historical point he wants to make is that most of what is being recycled to Africa as new grand ideas were created by Africans; from the idea of One Universal Force (God)to the idea of Nature. Those who think 'black' Africa had nothing to do with it should find out where the ancient Egyptians themselves thought as the origin of the their ideas. In any case one should read-up what the black Africans themselves told Europeans when they arrived with the abominations of slavery and colonialism;they were told they had inferior civilization. The Igbo quarrel with the British, for instance, is over this idea and insistence on the inferiority of European culture; which Olaudah Equiano first enunciated in Britain and British met with again in Igboland. To know the difference; when Herod wanted to kill the infant Jesus, his parents sought and got refuge in Africa's Egypt; when enemies wanted to kill the followers of Mohammed, the prophet, Mohammed directed to seek and secure refuge in Africa's Abyssinia;can either Chritianity or Islam's followers be as benevolent as these traditional Africans? This is a difference people like Okonkwo and Adebowole should come to understand to explains current events in Jos or Palestine instead of thinking their new way has made everything alright. Those who don't know should know that black Africa is the place where human development went from the Stone to the Iron age, jumping the Bronze. That Mexicans are now "backwards drug warriors" is no sign that they did not create great pyramids when the Europe that conquered them was nowhere. We should educate ourselves better; particularly to think more efficiently.

Great write up but...

I have tried to ignore the write-up because I see the direction seems to 'attack' Christianity. What the writer had said could be true but to bring it to Christmas is to say what is wrong. The writer should know that Christmas is not a biblical ceremony and such is just a religious act which anybody can recognize. Our Lord Jesus Christ only gave mandate to preach the gospel and take the Lord's supper which we, Christians, have been observing.

I am a Christian and vivid believer of African History. The Bible also recognized this- the first civilization was started by a black skin man named Nimrod and his kingdom extended from Babylon to China (Shinar by KJV-Gen 10), the Sumerians were blacks, the first economic power was Egypt (that I believed was why God sent Israel to Egypt to learn how a nation should be in terms of trade, governance etc, one of the disciple was a black man (Simon the Canaanite),  two of the four that laid hands on Apostle Paul for his ministry were black men (Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene), the man that carried the cross of Jesus was a black man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, Ephraim and Manasseh were half caste (Joseph wife was an Egyptian), and egyptian technology was used to preserve his death body for more than 400 years!

Mr. Osiris, I have written the above to show you that we Christian blacks or men of colour know where we stand in God who wants all men to be saved. Please leave religion and write on something that will be more benefit to social justice and equity. I can see why people kill because of religion- because you made them to see what is wrong in their belief rather than use your own religion orientation to impact the society. God is not interested in religion but that all men should be saved and leave in peace.

Teacher please stop teaching us what we already know!

white xmas

it is unfortunate that, xtianity, a religion founded by st. paul is made to look what yehushua ben maria (read Jesus)preached, this is false, a wrong assertion. all atheists and polytheists have always hinged their claim of superiority on the many irregularities in the xtian dogma to condemn fidelity to the worship of the one true Creator, this is wicked and false, Allah says there is not a people he made without sending a warner, all civilizations acknowledge the existence of a true God, the issue remains the deification of the messenger after his exit at the expense of the unity of Allah. that we find traces of the same belief in all faith is a confirmation of the unity of all creed, repent and return to the oft returning God, that you may not perish

Compliments!

@ Ramses Osiris. Although I do not know you, I'm highly impressed with your intellectual capacity, particularly the research-oriented arguments and counter-arguments yet always maintaining decorum. Please, keep it up!

The greatest tragedy that has

The greatest tragedy that has befallen Africans is their enstrangement from their own history and heritage! IGNORANCE! The Arabs and Europeans have , through brutal enslavement, successfully cut us off from our past. (Please, google  my article: "The Trouble With Nigeria" on Saharareporters).

So, I totally understand my critics. But if the truth is "sacrilege", so be it! I don´t want to belittle your beliefs. My only aim is to present facts, which none of you has been able to refute  I  will come up with MORE facts in subsequent articles.

@Okonkwo Kennedy: Of course, you are free to believe whatever you want to. The Credo you just recited was formulated in 325 CE at the Council of Nicea. But you might be shocked to discover that apart from Pontius Pilate, everything else was taken from the oldest Holy Book of the world: "The Book of Coming Forth of  Day and Night"- also called the Egyptian Book of the Dead.  That is the original African Bible, at least 20,000 BCE: Read that. Or read Gerald Massey. Or Pike,.........Then we can discuss.

@ Rommel:  You did NOT address the thrust of my assertion that Christmas is an age-old celebration in Africa, which was later usurped. No talk about Madonna, Horus, winter solstice, etc.

Still, a quick answer to your remarks. To be brief, the cradle of European civilisation is Greece. But Greece got their knowledge from Ancient Egyptians, who were irrefutably BLACK people. Read Herodotus, Cheikh Anta Diop. Or just google! Black Africa was invaded around 1720 BCE (Hyksos), 525 BCE (Persians), 333BCE (Macedonians/Greeks),  50 BCE (Romans), 7th. century CE (Arabs), then Turks, French, English........., which naturally caused a lot of forced migration towards sub-saharan Africa.

The invaders and later enslavers brought a lot of destruction in their wake: burning of temples, libraries like the one in Alexandria........, murdering priests and worshippers......but still, their is copious archeological, historical, anthropological, biological, linguistic, scientific evidence to prove every point I have made.

Why don´t you do your own research, instead of believing what some racist authors wrote?

@Cecil Stephens: Am I a god? That depends on what YOU mean by that. Some people have names like Jesus, Mohammed. Does that make them gods and prophets?

"The idea of worship of sun-god is not just ancient African religions.". Right. But the African is the oldest, the original.

"Greek origin of Christ?" Wrong! Greek name is "Christos" and it is derived from the African original "KRST".(karast)

"Plucked godly names from other ancient cultures?" Wrong. Those names are all African, well, hellenized by the Greeks, e.g., Auser was hellenized to Osiris. Africa is the most ancient civilisation.

"Omitted the Roman festivities around Christmas"? Right. Saturnalia, Sol Invictus. Remember the topic? AFRICAN Origin. Africans were there before the Romans. I also omitted Mithra, the Persian messiah, a copy of the African original.

"The Romans did not force Africans to worship their gods, did not suppress African religion to create Christmas"? Wrong! Google Emperors Theodosius, Constantine II, Serapeum, Hypatia...........      Please, tell us why they kept moving the date from January through September, until Pope Julius I in 350 CE fixed it on Dec.25.

"Christianity not based on African cosmology"? Wrong. Just google Jesus and Horus. Go to Egypt. Luxor Temple. You will still find the Nativity story (Annunciation, Immaculate Conception, Birth, Adoration, the 3 wise men.... ) of Pharaoh Amenophis III (Amenhotep) 1390-1352 BCE. Compare with Luke Gospel (Chapters 1&2).

CECIL, WHY DON´T YOU WRITE A REJOINDER AND DISPROVE MY ASSERTIONS WITH VERIFIABLE FACTS? I will be too glad to learn from you. It´s all about knowledge and African heritage.

@All Commentators: Thank you for your input. I´m just doing my little bit to help reclaim our stolen legacy. If the Arabs have their Islam, the whites their Christianity, the Asians their Buddhism, it is only fair for Africans to be proud of their own. All other religions, I repeat, all other religions are derived from the Black Holy Trinity of Osiris-Isis-Horus. And I can prove it!

Yet, everyone is free to believe what he wants to!

@ Rommel

I have to laugh at your arguements, sorry about that. I don´t believe in Osiris or Ra. But I´ve to disappoint you in that your research is not complete. For example if oral history cannot be trusted because of manipulations, but then you trusted completely the European written History! What a bias!

If you are seeking the truth, read people like W.E.B. De Bois, take a look also at the "Black Athena" but all with open and inquisitive mind. May be you will come to the realisation that the written history as you know it cannot also be completely trusted.

ehn ehn, before I go, let me add that in present day Egypt, they have discovered new Tombs of Pharaos, and for the next 10 years only Egyptian Archeologist are allow to enter it! Did you raise eye-brows?

When we ruled

Indeed what the writer stated is what every student of religion and spirituality knows. Christianity is a repackaged form of the Ancient African Mystery Schools, nothing more.

It would be good for commentators to read the book When we ruled see link
http://www.whenweruled.com/articles.php?lng=en&pg=31

In reply to Rommel,
On writing in subsaharan Africa in precolonial times, the Unesco General History of Africa documents at least 12 different writing scripts invented by Africans without European input. The present alphabet is in fact an ancient African invention. Africans invented two written sripts, one pictorial (heiropgyphic) and the other tonal (alpabetical). It is the alphabetical scripts that was modified by Europeans to develop their alphabet. Go and do the research.

Rommel should have read about the civilisations of Nubia, the Western Sudan of Ghana, Mali and Songhai, Ancient Kanem Bornu, Nupe, Benin and much more, Great Zimbabwe to name a few.

Ancient Africa laid the fundamental basis for technological society and Europe did not add anything new until the mediaval period. So we can say that Africa has been responsible for the technological progress of the world right up to the 1400 AD, and from that time onwards Europe and other parts of the world have taken the lead.

dont curse or abuse someones write up...

Nigerians we are too fast to condemn, abuse and rendering reckless words to a writer. We must stop that with immediate effect. IF DO NOT AGREE ON SOMEONE WRITE UP.. BETTER DISAGREE WITH THE PERSON AND DONT RENDER CURSE OR ABUSIVE WORDS TO HIM OR HER. DISAGREE AND MAKE YOUR OWN POINTS .

RAMSES OSIRIS - Beware of sacrilege

RAMSES OSIRIS - Beware of sacrilege in your part-fiction piece.

First your name betrays your intention - so you are a god?

Second, the idea of woship of sun-god is not just ancient African religions.

Third, you distort history with your purported knowledge of Egyptian ancient history and by the way the Greek origin of Christ is lost in your self adulation of ascribing a 'godly' name to yourself. You plucked these 'godly' names from other ancient cultures and not just Egyptian to fit you claim.

Fourth, you omitted the role of the Roman Empire and the influence of their religious feasts and feast days on Christmas. They did not just surpress African traditional beliefs to bring about Christmas day. By the way Romans did not force Africans to worship their own gods. They would have done so to pay homage to their own rulers.

Finally the claim of the article is that Chriatianity is based on some religion found around ancient Egypt, that is totally false. Explaining Christianity through the backdoor and without reference to the Scripture is sacrilege.

You tried to be sacrilegeous to arrive at an argument that Jesus an God are not white. That is a different issue to be dicussed - and Africa has always been central to belief in God and Christianity, but not in the manner that you have put forward.

I blame Saharareporters for not having those with true historical and indepth knowledge of the subject in allowing this publication.

AFRICANS

I appreciate your comments and researched story. The most important thing I got from your message is that Africans have lost most of their heritage and values. We can still recover them by being African. We still import and adopt western life as if all our lives depend on them. However, religion is of choice. People have the right to worship a God of their choice, African or European God.

This belief system of

This belief system of claiming everything as African in origin is unnecessary and I disagree with you my friend Njokede, the moors, the Nubians and old Egyptians as the African were then called by the Europeans had nothing to do with the other Africans of the west and southern parts of the continent, this was the region that the great Akhneton himself used to call the abode of the gods and since we all agree that Egypt is the first civilization, what then was the place called?

Anyway to help out,it was called 'Kemet' or Kmt meaning black land mostly referring to the rich soil were they settled before the expansion that led them into deserts and later the place was called 'Ht-ka-Ptah' meaning 'Temple for Ka of Ptah',that was ancient Egypt and the current name Egypt is of Greek origin.

It is worthy of note that sub Sahara Africa was unable to evolve any transferable system of writing or any standard form of measurement necessary for trading activities in an organized society and even ordinary things like coverings for their legs as in shoes and sandals was not available, the people merely existed from day to day surviving the many vagaries of nature that kept their population in check just like it happens in the wild with very high mortality.

All the history that we talk about today are histories as confirmed by the earliest visitors to our place, either by land as in Islamic conquests and trans Saharan trade routes or by water as in Portuguese adventurers.

If we were civilized as we want to claim, where are the records? oral traditions are only found in primitive tribes,it cannot be trusted because administrative and social challenges make societies to evolve into civilized systems, things like writings, measurements and record keeping are necessary for trading and stability as human reasoning would have been found to be insufficient ,a critical look at the evolution of our present mother tongues will reveal evidence of these challenges eg, we say now that a person who travels wide is usually wiser than an old man,it was never so before as the elderly people who sometimes suffer Alzheimer and hardy remember anything were considers in our society the Library of the village.

Such was the tragedy of our system, there is limit to trade by barter, people can survive barter trading only by limiting their needs and wants to what they can get from their immediate surroundings but when population begins to grow, secondary and tertiary needs begin to emerge, barter dies a natural death.

It was the west African people that brought the Negro world to this present classification by European sociologists and anthropologists as vengeance for the inferiority they faced when dealing with the Moors and the reason was simple, they looked and they saw nothing apart from rich lands inhabited by people who appeared to have been designed by nature to live at peace with and maintain the forests.

This gave them the impetus to begin the plunder of the jungles but because of the mosquitoes that attacked them with Malaria, they had to find a way to deal with the people that appeared to be the leaders of the inhabitants of the forests much like we plunder the territories of the grass-cutters and other bush meats we have come to love as delicacies .

Africa Use To Be Earth's Superpower

Africa is not only the origin of humankind but also the dawn of civilisation. Most contented that burning of the library in Egypt where details of human progress, civilisation and scientific forwardness was recorded - by conspiring Caucasian-Israeli plot saw Africa lose the number-one superpower position of this planet.

Europeans and their co-Middle Eastern conspirators waylaid African way of live and civilization which husbanded human progress and civilisation and ruthlessly replaced it with theirs, and now we play second fiddle kneeling before pastor Adeboye and hailing imported Gods. Jesus wept!

the writer went on a

the writer went on a sacrilegious journey that landed him nowhere...ramses, i will suggest you stick to nigerian political and social topics to save yourself the condemnations this piece will attract to you...you are free to believe in your wooden gods, but it will serve us better to allow those who disagree the freedom to profess their own belief..faith is usually a gift from our God and it does not require proof.i believe in God,the father almighty, maker of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord, who was conceived by the holy spirit, born of virgin mary, suffered under pontius pilate,he was crucified, died and was buried,he descended into hell.the third day,he rose again from the dead and ascended into heaven and is sitteth at the right hand of the father. from there he shall come again to judge the living and the dead...i believe in the holy spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sin,the resurrection of the body and life everlasting...this my faith,i don't need further proof ramses.
