ATIKUlating A National Irritant

By Michael Egbejumi-David

About four years ago I was at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.  Early afternoon, my partner wanted to get her hair done in the saloon and asked me to come with her.  I didn’t want to go but I went only after I saw an opportunity therein to check out the local female talents.  Once there, I was pretending I was reading a newspaper whilst actually checking out everything around me when Atiku busted into the saloon with a large security entourage.  He had come for a pedicure!

While I was quite circumspect in checking out the local talents, Atiku had no such restraint.  In the end, I had to spend some of my time and energies blocking the man from pushing up on my own woman like an exercise.  I tell you, it wasn’t easy.  Anyway, the man has been in my bad books ever since.

I vaguely remember Atiku Abubakar’s name during the incidence of the infamous 53 suitcases belonging to one Emir that were allowed into the country after Idiagbon/Buhari had closed the border.  I think Atiku had tried to prevent those suitcases from coming-in but he was overruled by the Army men.  Several years later, thanks to Obasanjo and his politics of compensation, Atiku became Nigeria’s Vice President.

In December 2006 after Obasanjo put the clampers firmly around him, Atiku dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for another Party, the Action Congress (AC).  Whilst in the AC, this man did absolutely nothing for that Party.  He tried and used the AC as a platform to further his presidential dream but failed so he moved on.  On 6 April 2010, he formally dumped the AC and returned to the PDP.  On that occasion, he said that he had “decided to embrace the PDP's policy of reconciliation.”  He added that “the values and ideals of the party (PDP) were deliberately trampled upon by anti-democratic forces…Despite being a founding member, I was treated shabbily and eventually forced out of the party. I had no choice therefore but to team up with others to found the AC.”   This is rich because those anti-democratic forces are still in the PDP actively practicing their trade.  He ended by stating that, “Sadly, my efforts to help build a strong national opposition party have been frustrated by factionalisation, intrigues and divided loyalties to particular individuals.”  So he returned to the PDP and to his vomit in a clumsy manner.  Political prostitution on a real grand scale.

Preparatory to all that, back on 19 January 2009, Atiku went all the way to Ota on all fours to beg and reconcile with Obasanjo.  I supposed OBJ must have counselled him to wait for a suitable interregnum before returning to the PDP.  In any event, after his re-admittance to the PDP, the man immediately began acting as if the PDP and Nigeria owe him a presidency or something.  He began practicing a bizarre and unsavoury politics of entitlement.  His campaign theme was exclusively that the PDP had a rotational agreement and that that in fact meant he should be conferred the Party’s presidential ticket.  He neglected to mention that despite this same apparent rotation arrangement, he was the first person to tell Obasanjo back in early 2003 to adopt the “Mandela option” and not seek a second term as President.  He didn’t just stop there, he then mobilised some corrupt State governors to help him unseat Obasanjo so that he (Atiku) could be President in 2003.

Atiku's politics of entitlement saw him in Port Harcourt just over a week ago where, as a parting shot, he told the folks there that, “We are trying to stop the culture of eight year term in the country, but the North is bent on finishing the remaining years of late Umaru Yar’Adua.”  This was after he had reminded the people that the power sharing policy of the PDP made it possible for an Ijawman to be president of Nigeria.  He further remarked that, “I was telling Bayelsa delegates that do you know that the whole of you are not up to one senatorial district in Kano? Let us be very thoughtful of what we are doing. I was telling some people last night that you want to abandon zoning, not so. You want to abandon zoning. As of today, 61% of PDP delegates are from the North. I don’t need to come here and talk to you.”  Then he added, “All I need is to mobilise all the northern delegates to vote for me, even if I take 55% of that 61 per cent, I am okay. You have only 31% here in the South. The entire number of delegates from the South-South are not half of that of the North West. Tell me when it comes to numbers how you are going to win this election?”  Clearly, arithmetic is not his strong suit.  Just the month before, he was talking about inevitable violent change if peaceful change is unachievable.  I mean, what is all this?

After all his bravura and bluster, the PDP presidential primary came and the man who is reputed to be very fond of his akamu and akara got a different dish served him in the early hours of January 14.  Atiku only managed to secure 805 votes compared to Jonathan’s 2,736.  He even lost to Jonathan by 31 to 76 votes in Adamawa, his own home State!  In fact, Jonathan beat Atiku in 14 of the 19 northern States and in every State south of the Niger.  A very complete rout and a very needed reminder for Atiku of where he truly slots-in in the scheme of things in Nigeria.
Even in a gubernatorial tussle in Adamawa, the man who fancies himself the boss up there could not carry his home State.  But he goes to others and reminds them that he doesn’t really need their vote.  Well, they didn’t give it to him.  Look where he is now.

I don’t particularly care for the PDP but I admired the way the Party first used Atiku to block Babangida, and then how they drained some of our billions off his pocket before kicking him in the family jewels.
So what was the source of Atiku’s empty arrogance?  I guess he needed to be bent over double for his very public flogging and I was glad he got one.   Lord knows that he has been spoiling for this kind of beating for a while.
Here was a man who has been dying to be firmly put in his place.  A proven political lightweight blessed with an uncanning talent for misjudgement and missteps.  You would think he would have learnt by now, but noooo.  At the start of the PDP primaries he was offered an opportunity to sell himself.  But what did Atiku do?  He only went and dropped another clanger.  He rose up and delivered a completely negative speech that was ungentlemanly, abrasive and lacking in grace.  All he did was mostly push his personal born-to-rule, turn-by-turn agenda and told delegates that voting for him was “the right thing to do.”  Haba Alhaji?  How so?

Let us just tell him: That negative sermon was further proof that Atiku is not a bona fide leader and certainly not an astute politician.  In fact, his whole political odyssey is littered with errors and poor decisions.  He comes across as too desperate and that is very off-putting.  He has been harping on about rotational agreement; but for a sitting, powerful and very visible Vice President who apparently understood that power may likely return to his side of town next time around, why did he not diligently serve his principal - the President, the country and his Party.  Rather, he instigated a bunch of governors to help him unseat his principal after just one term in office.  That singular incident irreparably wounded his political career.  Perhaps if he had served faithfully for eight years as a loyal and credible Vice, the PDP’s presidential ticket would have been his for the taking in 2007.  Instead, he took a loaded bazooka to his own greedy foot.  Now he continues to struggle, grope and blame other people for his own shortcomings.

Atiku’s unravelling has been a long time in coming.  It’s turned out that his vaunted political mastery is completely overblown.  Similarly, his crayon-written PR is hugely exaggerated.  Turns out he’s no master of anything at all.  His only national acclamation is that he married women from all nook and cranny of Nigeria.  As for credible leadership credentials; not even close.  I’m not enamoured by OBJ, but like him, me too I dey laugh o.

As educated as you claim to be, you failed to see
the picture behind Mr Mike s well-crafted essay.
Firstly, his introduction is metarphoric, those who
are well educated understood it and I don t know
where your bias stems from. finally, it was a
well illustrated Atiku s drama in Nigeria
political stage. Stop the hate and fall in line.

I will not totally rule out

I will not totally rule out the fact that Atiku did go for pedicure at the Hilton hotel. I say this because some years back, the gentleman that cuts my hair in lagos once told me how he wishes Atiku wins the presidency. When I probed deeper to know his reason, he told me that he has cut Atiku's hair at his saloon located in Victoria island and that Atiku is generous especially after each hair cut. These guys are human beings and some times do things that ordinary folks like you and I do therefore please dont condemn Michaels contribution based on your assumption that it is imossible for Atiku to visit such public places for a pedicure.

Point of Correction!!!

If the PDP Presidential primaries were to be won by the highest bidder, Atiku would have won! Can someone tell me where Atiku got the $20,000USD cash that he paid each delegate. My father was a delegate who rightly among others confirmed this, he stated it clearly that some of the delegates left there government lodge in Asokoro to Atkiu's camp and came back with $20,000 each! from Atiku, whereas Jonathan paid only $7k.

Now i see that Nigerians are getting wiser and i want to especially thank our brothers in the North, together, we will do away with these old cargos and secure a bright future for this nation. God Help Nigeria.

Sahara Reporters, Please Assess & Filter Contributions Pls.

I have no defense for Atiku, in fact I don't particularly like him bcos he comes across as a corrupt public office holder. And it is good that his chances of becomimg President has been completely dimmed. Nonetheless one cannot fail to see the fallacy in the story spurn by this Michael Egbejumi-David who easily also comes across as the biggest and cheapest liar I have ever known in my entire life. He is daydreaming & hallucinating. He failed ab initio when he stated that Atiku went to the Transcorp Hilton to do pedicure. Even many of Atiku's top assistants and that of people like him do not go to such public places to do things like cut their hair, get a massage or get given pedicure or manicure. The editors of Sahara Reporters should be filtering messages to discern those that sound realistic and those that are outrightly false or over-embellished. Contributors like Michael Egbejumi-David only end up damaging the reputation of Sahara Reporters with stories that are not even fit for beer pubs.

Thanks

Its an award winning article. . .Thanks

ATIKU

I really dont know what this Northern looter think we are, looks like he was seeing us like his "malloo" - cow.People who dont think nor reason, without memeories of event of the past. From his speaches, one will deduce that Atiku is a treat to the Unity of this nation. His emergence would have torn the nation apart , his speaches were merely inciting war in the minds of the puplic.I so laughed at his defeat at the early hours of 14th january,Looking so helpless.Just after the announcement a replay of all the speaches started all over.Poor Atiku....now u are layed to rest.even in your home town.you could not win....Thats a wrong signal.Pls dnt incite the youths to go acting on the streets as though you are important to them. You are simply not.its all lips service and "FACEFULNESS" .Pls leave the corridors of power and face your business empire you'v built from the looths.

The Atiku in an average Nigerian

After reading through comments that are posted, which in fact is a must do for me after going through the main article, I have seen one distinct and striking common denominator in most of the comments posted and that is the anger of an average Nigerian for the failure of government in this country in the mixed of plenty. The glaring high level of a failed system or government and the unprecedented amount of money acquired by those occupying public and political positions in the country is enough to wipe up anger against people like Atiku and his co travellers in this unholy path of corruption. How can Atiku explain the source of his massive and stupendous wealth, other than stealing from our commonwealth. He was only a customs officer and even where he is working for a 100years he cannot get that kind of money. As for those who don't know that it was Atiku who ruled Nigeria from 1999 - 2003 as OBJ was junketing from one country to another should now know that it was during that period that he was also in-charge of privatization of government owned assets,it was during that period Intels a company that he has vested interest in totally took over Onne / ikpokiri OGFZ in Rivers state. Simply put this man got what he probably deserved, He was seeing himself as God, Imagine him coming to boost that “I was telling Bayelsa delegates that do you know that the whole of you are not up to one senatorial district in Kano? Let us be very thoughtful of what we are doing. I was telling some people last night that you want to abandon zoning, not so. You want to abandon zoning. As of today, 61% of PDP delegates are from the North. I don’t need to come here and talk to you.” Imagine the insult on a people by a mere mortal who is acting God. what about the insults he rained on the President before the casting of votes by delegates, he has forgotten that he is feeding and milking all his wealth from these people he is now insulting. The Atiku saga is not a north and south issue as all that he and and co travellers from the north in path of corruption has never affected the lives of their people positively in any way like their cohorts from the south has also never affected the lives of their people positively in any way. But we Nigerians should not see Jonathan as the messiah, the only good thing about him is that he listens. Lets start from their, a listening government might change the act of governance for the good of the people. GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

ATIKUlating A National Irritant

No rational person will believe whatever you said or articulated about Atiku Abubakar, because you had said ab-initio that "the man has been in my bad books ever since". Just because you failed to impress Atiku when you tried to catch his attention.
Further more you don't seem to know the depth of the PDP politics and its rigging machinery.
Please if you don't have facts, don't concoct stories and ganish them for the public domain.
You want to catch somebody else's attention again by this article? Try your luck again, just as you did during your visit to Nicon-Hilton. Perhaps this time you will be lucky!!!!!!

Atiku is a political disaster

Well done Mike, this is one of the most articulated articles I have read in recent times. Guess you are in the profession. Atiku is an unfortunate example of the Nigerian political and ruling class. The system that threw him up metamophorsed from the corrupt and visionless carcass of the sixties and seveties. The born-to-rule syndrome class. All noise, no brains. He demonstrated a clear picture of the evil forces that has held Nigeria progress down over the years. He is such a huge shame to his kinsmen and associates and I hope that by this singular shameless display, he would have known now that he is a political plague perpetually engrossed in failures and fatal errors.
This is a new dawn and order in Nigerian political terrain and the shift from the likes of Atiku is highly inevitale. Atiku, go home and check out the grand meaning of I dey laugh. Atiku, you dont need wisdom to tell you that your Nigerian political prowess have been buried. We dey laugh. Chei, OBJ is a mischievious man.

Re; mango

It is sad very sad indeed that someone of your caliber
will spew words with delibrate ignorance in this day and age. It is obvious you are from the northern region
and your arrogance, pride, entittlement- born to rule mindset suffered a battery of collosal magnitude.
It is a new day, a new reality bro, I will not plead
with you to embrace it; there ia a wind of change blowing accross Nigeria if you stay in its path it will hit you like a freight train."change is as inevitable as death".
Your arrogance was in display trying to undermine the master-piece and well crafted write -up of Mr Mike, in which capacity did you place yourself to have the audacity, the bravado or impetus to querry his intelligence? After self examination you called him a bigot, wow. Where I come from thieves
are entitled to "zero" respect and that is what your
Atiku is , a thief , barawo , ole or onyeosi. Only in
your region will he be a champion of thief though.
Having said that I passionately have regard and utmost
respect for my fellow brothers and sisters of the nothern region. long live Nigeria .

Now that he has been beaten or trashed in his game , let us join hand together as IBB, ALIYU & SARAKI sings the dirge let us sweep
All of them who have been circulating themselves in power since40 yrs ago and Niger has nothing jto show 4 it except poverty and retogression . It is time to change direction and elect a youth and bury all the polical manipulation &bribery that goes with it.

Beautiful Write-up

Michael, you did a wonderful job with this article. Unfortunately as it was getting more interesting it suddenly ended. You still have an unfinished task. Atiku must be placed where he truly belongs. I have never really been a fan of his, but he disappointed me with his convention day speech. He is nothing like a statesman. He doesn't even deserve to sit at council of states meeting. He is a traitor and a sham, with all due respect. Perhaps he should have challenged OBJ earlier in 2003 so he would have had an early fall with his governor friends. Anyway, the man should bow honourably like IBB and move forward by joining hands in trying to stop the storming train headed towards the PDP come April 2011. They are falling one after the other. The Tunisian experience should be an eye-opener to our selfish and narrow-minded political class. Pls give us Part 2 of your article.

Aticulating

A nice piece on an arrogant man who thinks he could curry favour by singing zoning! How could someone who wants to be the president of nigeria have the audacity to tell a state that he does not need to come to them for vote cos he will get all the votes he needs from the North. This automatically cancels him out cos he will end up dividing the country through his tribalism. Another clincher was his speech prior to the primaries. He had an opportunity to sell himself instead his greed and bad blood beclouded him and he lost it. Nigerians are no longer sitting on the fence, they are participating and waiting for the rigth time to strike. No one should arrogate to himself so much importance.

ATIKU STOP

its all like this every where in africa countries if this atiku think he can fight evey body ,i see him as a greed man just like many africa leaders,GEJ OBJ,there all fools looters PDP scums

THUMPS UP FOR A NICE WRITE UP

YOU WILL HAVE TO BE AN ILLITERATE NOT TO APPRECIATE THIS ARTICLE. IN ALL IT'S RAMIFICATIONS, IT STANDS OUT AS A GOOD LITERARY NAY POETIC WORK INDEED. IT IS LIKE MUSIC TO THE EARS REALLY. SO I SAY THUMBS UP TO THE WRITER.

FOR ATIKU AND SUPPORTERS, NO WAHALLA. I AM CONVINCED MORE THAN EVER THAT ATIKU IS NOT ONLY FOOLISH BUT ALSO STUPID IF HE COULD NOT SEE THE HANDWRITING ON THE WALL AND EVADED THE FATE THAT BEFELL HIM AT EAGLE SQUARE. HOW COULD HE HAVE WALKED INTO A TRAP LIKE THAT? IT IS SIMPLY BECAUSE HE HAS FED FOR SO LONG ON HIS OWN LIES AND HE IS NOW DRUNK WITH IT. LYING IS SUCH A BAD THING BECAUSE OF THE ALTERED STATE OF REALITY THAT PEOPLE WHO TELL LIES ABOUT EVERYTHING ESPECIALLY THEIR SENSE OF SELF IMPORTANCE. SOW TO THE WIND AND YOU WILL REAP DISAPPOINTMENT PERIOD!

Atiku insulted and underestimated the entire southern Nigerians!

Atiku is just an arrogant criminal who still thinks the world should bow at his feet. He's a moron, a nonentity and just as Governor of his own state (Adamawa) Muritala Nyako said in 234Next news this morning, Atiku is a national security threat and his activities henceforth should be checked seriously by all security agencies.
The guy is just a national embarassment but doesnt seem to realise that. We hailed him some yrs ago for standing up to OBJ, only for him to betray the trust Nigerians impose on him and parleying with IBB's camp so that IBB can impose him on us as our president in 2011 since he himself (IBB) was no longer acceptable among the people. That grossly shows the lack of integrity by Atiku!
More annoying is the fact that his long standing relationship with OBJ in the past as OBJ's VP in 1999 & 2003 has made it difficult for him to accept that a Nigeria where the people decides who rule them is possible.
He believes that election can only be won by rigging because that is what he learnt from his previous boss OBJ(d master rigger!).
But now its glaring to him that he has completely lost it. Even IBB himself has bowed out honourably and accepted the verdict of the people concerning his annulment of the June 12 elections by congratulating jonathan for winning the primaries.
I would have expected Atiku to do the same!
Earlier before the PDP primaries, I remember reading on Sahara Reporters that Atiku's camp gave $5,000 to the delegates while Jonathan's camp gave $7,000. The volume of money given no longer matters here, but the fact that both parties gave bribes to the delegates. And yet, the delegates voted who they wanted.
Afterall, it wasn't all the northern states and their delegates that voted for Jonathan. If I can also remember, Atiku won in 5 northern states but Jonathan in addition to other northern states he won, was also fortunate to win almost the entire south! Its not Jonathan's fault, it's Atiku's fault for daring to present himself to Nigerians as a northern presidential candidate in a country with over 6 Geo-political zones. I wonder what he was thinking. While some northern delegates voted Jonathan, others didn't and nobody killed them for not voting Jonathan.
So Atiku should just accept it that he lost woefully! And his experience should be a good lesson for all Nigerians to learn from, that the DAYS OF TRIBAL POLITICS IN THIS COUNTRY IS OVER!
Any Nigerian presenting himself as an NORTHERN, WESTERN, EASTERN, SOUTHERN OR EVEN MIDDLE-BELT presidential candidate in future elections in this country should forget winning that ticket whether in the PDP or any other political party in this country, because Nigerians (especially Nigerians from other tribes & zones)will never vote for such a candidate!
So Atiku should stop taking advantage of the ignorance of those innocent northern youths to disturb our national peace, YOU LOST OUT WOEFULLY! KPELE!
This man Atiku is really a big buffoon who thinks he can have whatever he wants maybe because he has bought over women like properties and sees the entire Nigeria as a property he can also acquire on a platter of gold! Now let it be made clear to him that his political career in this country especially at the Federal level is destroyed completely. If Atiku will ever become president in his life time, it will be after a Northern Nigerian Republic has been created and separated from the Southern Nigerian regions! Because as long as the present FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA is still in existence, his insult on the southern region of this great nation will never be forgotten just like IBB's annulment of June 12 election in 1993.
That you come from one of the largest tribes in this country does not give you the right to insult the intelligence of other smaller tribes in the country. Always remember that those smaller tribes and regions are and will continue to be part of Nigeria. And that their interest will always be considered when decisions such as leadership of the entire country is to be made, zoning or no zoning.
Besides, Atiku comes from one of the smallest tribes(Fulani) but always pose himself as an Hausa man, he is really a stupid man and just as OBJ said, me too; I DEY LAUGH THIS IDIOT ALSOOOOOOO!

the writer started by saying

the writer started by saying he does not like Atiku, this shows his sentiments will not allow him to do justice to the sitiuation

A very nice analysis of Atiku

A very nice analysis of Atiku by Mike. Thumb up for you.

@Hamza,Sorry, but you are

@Hamza,Sorry, but you are wrong, so very wrong in your assessment. And am not saying this because you are a muslims or hausa. but simply because you refuse to see the whole Nigeria situation from a perspective that is objective. We from the south are for this write up cos from all indications Atiku is not the best for own dear country not because he is muslim/hausa. And you, with all your intelligence is not able to see this. I just read how someone from the south praise our first Prima the late Balewa and others like Ribadu and Sanusi. All these mens are Muslim/hausa. We from the south have decided to see things, the way they really are, and not be blind to the truth. Most of us from the south fought a gallant fight against OBJ third term agender and it was not because he was Muslim, hausa christain or yoruba. But because it was the right thing to do. Think man, THINK.
