Can Anything Good Come Out of President Jonathan? By Paul Omoruyi
There is always the proclivity to criticize and see all the wrong things going on around us in Nigeria. This is not unique to Nigeria and Nigerians. It is the human factor. As developed and advanced as the United States socio-political systems, some Americans (at least Republicans) will tell you one million and one thing wrong with the Obama’s government and policies.
There is a place for criticism. I think it is good for the overall health of any society. Human beings tend to become tyrannically corrupt if there is no one to keep them in check. Nowadays, even pastors are not exempted! The old maxim captures it beautifully “because power corrupts; society's demands for moral authority and character increase as the importance of the position increases.”
Let me be clear, I am a critic of Jonathan’s government. I think he has not demonstrated the political prowess and will to prosecute those who have evidently stolen and wasted our collective wealth. He pussyfoots in his war against corruption. He tergiversates when dealing with insecurity in the country. He prevaricates when it is time to act on an investigative report recommendations that will be beneficial to the country. He appears overly cautious not to offend the Nigerian “godfathers” that unfortunately have capacity to bring down the Nigerian State at their whims, anytime, any day.
Criticism they say “should not be querulous and wasting, all knife and root-puller, but guiding, instructive, inspiring, a south wind, not an east wind”. Any well-meaning social crusader will not only criticize but also instruct, inspire and guide those in public office.
Most Nigerians voted for President Jonathan (GEJ) thinking he is learned enough to change the status quo. I have been asking myself lately if there is anything for now that Nigerians can be proud of about Jonathan. Some seemingly good pointers came to mind that I think GEJ should deserve a little encomium for now until we see where he ends:
Before Jonathan, previous governments (shame on all past Nigeria “Cell Wait US”- Senators and “RepresentaThieves” - Representatives) did not dare to raise the issue of fuel subsidy scam and malfeasance in the Nigerian public domain. It leaves me to wonder why former presidents from Banbagida to Obasanjo did not fight against this injustice on the Nigerian people during their presidency.
Apparently, the previous presidents were privy to the same data and intelligence as Jonathan. Did they willingly collude with the cabals; had a piece of the pie and shut their mouth? Nigerians need to ask them to testify under oath and prosecute them accordingly. Doesn’t Jonathan deserve some praise for raising the issue to an unprecedented level in Nigeria that even the market women now understand how fuel subsidy works? Your guess is as good as mine.
Another pointer that I think GEJ deserves to be commended for is in the area of money-laundering. With all its flaws, huff and puff, EFCC during GEJ’s administration has done a laudable job in capturing “live cash” smugglers in Nigeria airports. Have you thought about all the ungodly sum of live cash that have been smuggled out of Nigeria in the past with the connivance of Nigerian elite before now? Your guess is as good as mine.
Lastly, Jonathan’s administration has awoken the sleeping Nigerian populace. For the first time in my life, I see Nigerians talking and engaged in the daily issues and public policy debates that affect their lives. In the past, many policies were imposed on them even by foreign governments without their input. I was enthralled and a cold chill ran down my spine when I heard a fellow young Nigerian say “I am ready to die for a change in Nigeria” during the occupy Nigeria fuel subsidy removal protest.
Whether it is the 5000 naira notes or the capricious and senseless renaming of Lagos State University, Nigerians were able to rise up, speak up and have their voice heard on the matter.
Now that I see some modicum of good in GEJ, I have pieces of advice for him. Going forward, GEJ has to make a conscious decision (yes, it is a leadership and conscious decision!) to decisively wage war against corruption without giving “a damn” (remember he does not give a damn?) about whose head the axe will fall on. Nigeria masses have given him the mandate and political capital. He should not waste it but spend it judiciously by fighting for the same Nigerian masses.
GEJ should immediately take control of keeping Nigeria safe. The fact that he is holed up in the safety of Aso Rock security does not mean that he will remain unaffected by the pains that average Nigerians feel everyday from Boko Haram and kidnapping bedlam. Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will be able to explain better to him!
As January 1st, 2013 approaches, Nigerians are looking forward to what GEJ will do whimsically as his manner has been. However, whatever GEJ does in 2013 will determine his legacy and place in Nigeria history. In 2013, he should achieve as much as he can focusing on specific projects that all Nigerians can see and use as his legacy reference point. The question is, do Nigerians think anything good can come out of President Jonathan? Your guess is as good as mine.

Can anything good come out of President Johnathan?
They could not have called some of the names they are calling if GEJ came from their tribe or their region. Who started the corruption they are screaming about today? It is terrible in this country that we have short memory. It is all political and if you want Jahnathan to be consummed note that it is you that shall be consummed.
paid writers will write even if Gej paves our roads with gold
Remember what they told us before the sack of Azazi? The story was that Azazi was evil because he is an ijaw man from the same tribe with the president. We read about his satanic activities from El Rufai, Okey Sonala and members of his alawada pick and pay writers club! Reminded daily of how much oil money the security agents were stealing. I said it here then that the sponsored articles against late General Azazi will end as soon as he is removed. Not a single article has been penned against Holy Saint DASUKI in spite of the daily killings by boko haram! That is what 9ja is about- Is madam in the petroleum industry not being insulted every second by the alleged owners of Nigeria from the old regions of the country? Soon we will be told they voted for GEJ and one 9ja! Tell dem to go to hell-they did not-What is the difference between her and the experience David West West had in the hands of IBB-Or d Keshi and Sia Sia wahala?
It Has Nothing To Do With GEJ ...
Those things you credit to GEJ have nothing to do with him or his Govt. They are happening thanks to SAHARAREPORTERS AND SOCIAL MEDIA which were not active during the past regimes.
Effective govt is recognised on provision of functional Infrastructures, Education, Health, Good Road and Transport Network, Security and Social Services. GEJ scored zero so far on all these.
Stop deceiving gullible Nigerians. Call a spade a spade.
Nothing Good Can Ever Come Out of ol' Jericho ...forget Jona !
The Shoeless One is like old Jericho, nothing-nothing. Wasted half-education. Empty. The man is simply too drunk to reason straight. In fact his mental state has been questioned by many here on SaharaReporters including a Professor! Others have suggested an IQ test for our future leaders based solely on his dismal performance. Coupled with an ilitrate wife, it's tube & tyre. Beyond the vulcanizer. Aborigines are beyond remedial intervention, they should be gathered together and sent back to Papau New Guinea where they came from carrying Lord Lugard's luggage. Dr. Dumbo never got off the ground before he was written off by discerning minds. Nothing Good Can Ever Come Out of Him. Jona ke!
@Paul Omoruyi: Are you this daft ? (2)
@Paul Omoruyi
While you were in the hole you just crawled out from, Bukola Ogunyemi wrote this.
http://saharareporters.com/article/jonathan-metricks-fuel-subsidy-scam-o...
Compare it with the rubbish you wrote, you should be shamed of your low IQ.
You also claimed "Lastly, Jonathan’s administration has awoken the sleeping Nigerian populace. For the first time in my life, I see Nigerians talking and engaged in the daily issues and public policy debates that affect their lives."
Are you for real ? What a feeble little mind you have got ! It is better you keep shut and people think you are intelligent than expose your stupidity this way !
@Paul Omoruyi: Are you this daft ?
@Paul Omoruyi
You claimed " Doesn’t Jonathan deserve some praise for raising the issue to an unprecedented level in Nigeria that even the market women now understand how fuel subsidy works? Your guess is as good as mine."
For your information, while you were in the hole, it was Nigerians that challenged Jonathan on increment in fuel prices and along the line discovered the usual fuel subsidy under previous govts. has risen to N1trillion under the Otuoke Clown ! How does this compare with your wild claim ?
So the question I need to ask you daft Paul Omoruyi is, how did N250b fuel subsidy under Yaradua rose to 4 times (N1trillion) under GEJ. Did every Nigerian buy 4 extra cars ? You IQ is far below average !
Paul Omoruyi, You Stole My Title!
That was the exact title I had commenting on Mr. Obasanjo's alleged meddling in Ghana elections, and you didn't give me credit.
revolutiooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnn learn from egypt
U are so right bro, revolution or we keep hoping till our kids and their kids.
OKUPE,ALAMIEYESEIGHA,ET AL-THE STENCH AROUND JONATHAN
Simple, tell me your friends and I will tell you who you are.A President must not only combat corruption but be seen by his nation to be doing so,and there are no half measures acceptable. The moral responsibility of being a leader is enormous. An Ex-Governor was caught red-handed in a foreign country with money he could not explain running into the millions of £s probably from the commonwealth of the masses and was arrested, bailed but subsequently jumped bail and illegally escaped from that country(UK)and on his return to Nigeria was locally convicted for crimes of corruption.President Jonathan should have shown some respect to his office and the dignity of the Nigerian nation by publicly avoiding such a man,he actually poured praises on this ex-convict in public before the world.
Doyin Okupe is not a convict but has a whole lot of unsettled issues relating to unconventional business practices in the execution of government contracts in the past, today he is the Presidents media man.
Kudos to the writer!
"Any well-meaning social crusader will not only criticize but also instruct, inspire and guide those in public office". This is very apt.
My slight disagreement with the writer, and where I believe most people seem to get it wrong, is the misconception and fixation on the President as the body "to decisively wage war against corruption without giving “a damn”". War against corruption is a collective. It falls within the RESPONSIBILITY of the POLICE. The PRIMARY DUTY of the POLICE is to PREVENT, DETECT AND PROSECUTE the commission of ALL CRIMES (including corruption)! The Police shouldn't need the PROMPTING of the President (and could disagree with him)! If our 3RD IGP in 2 years is INCOMPETENT to stop corruption, we should call for his sack and move on to a 4th!
I support the statement - "Nigeria masses have given him the mandate and political capital. He should not waste it but spend it judiciously by fighting for the same Nigerian masses". GEJ grow some more balls!
@Ifeanyi-Democracy4ever - Kudos to you!
You seem to have a lot of FACTS and know a lot about the President, which leads to suspicion of being 'paid'. But even if you are, I don't see anything wrong in you doing what you believe in. And you do a good job of highlighting the achievements of this Govt. At least, better than his INFORMATION Minister, whose duty it is to INFORM the public and Nigerians about the programmes and achievements of Govt.
You also bring a balance to the conversation, and balance out the spins from the see-no-good and the phd elements or opposition. Reading the balance that you bring, it helps one to make an informed assessment or appraisal of the present regime. I note your stated motive - "3) confront LIES and speculations with FACTS, images and testimonies of REAL people on ground".
If in under 2 years the President has achieved all that you wrote, then, well done, Mr President.
Ah, Too Late for GEJ
Oga, I've written off the man-GEJ.
Once you pour some ogogoro in the glass, you could wait forever, and it will never foam up! GEJ could disrobe himself in public to signify a new change in leadership, thoughts, actions, lunch menu.... I'd reamin unmoved!
good
The Question should be NIGERIA nad not Jonathan.
You claim that for the first
You claim that for the first time in your life you are observing "Nigerians talking and engaged in the daily issues and public policy debates that affect their lives". Are you for real? This is all they have ever done (beer parlour talk as we call it). If you are noticing it for the first time then you may not even be Nigerian after-all. They do it everywhere- home, abroad and in cyberspace. You talk about feeling a chill down your spine because a contemporary claimed they were ready to die for Nigeria. Hahaha. That you fell for such a run-of-the-mill empty vaunt suggests naivety to say the least. Nigerians are good at talking big. It is all they do.
As for GEJ, he is already a write-off. I echo the sentiments of the contributor who points out that you cannot give what you do not have.
Nothing good from whoever is mentored by Diepreye Alamieyeseigha
Expect nothing good from whoever is mentored by Diepreye Alamieyeseigha
Hopeless or hopeful
For a start I think the writter is right. Am also a dire critic of GEJ administration and PDP. In as much I hate to admit that good thing may likely come to an end, I also hate to remember the nightmare of the journey so far. Like the common saying what happened on Wednesday determine what will go down on Thursday. Nigeria, I wouldnt say we are not on hardship but that doesnt mean I wouldnt vouch that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Infact no sane man in this country would say he doesnt really love this country "Nigeria". But the problem is always the government, if they truely love this country they would make it work, is up to them.
God bless Nigeria.
Reply
I don't know who you are and where you are coming from. but from the looks of things, you are one of those ignorant, unrepentant dullard who has refused to see beyond your nose.
It is only in the life of this administration that a serving PDP chairman is having his son undergoing prosecution in connection with fuel subsidy payment. Also, electricity has significantly improved to such an extent that Nigerians now enjoy it longer than they were used to.
Take another look t airports remodeling as well as the transformation in agriculture sector among several others.
Bros, while it is true that we have not gotten to the promised land, the signals of a sure and steady transformation are glaring for all to see.
ANYWAY, YOU ARE JUST EXPRESSING YOUR MYOPIC OPINION....
Paul, You are dead wrong ...
First of all, Nigerians are fed up (and about time too!!!!!) of all the shenanigans of the thieves in power hence the vibrant discussions and limited street actions.....example fuel subsidy, Lekki toll gate, Yar Adua disappearance etc. it has nothing to do with clueless Joe. Secondly, Jonathan, like the other crooks before him knew about the scam called fuel subsidy, it only got astronomically worse under his rudderless, inept administration jumping from a N300 billion per annum scam to N2.7 trillion (in the election year.....go figure!!!) under Jona. If the mass protest had not happened there would have been no probes, and even when there were probes you can clearly see government interference in the outcome......example Oti and Oransaye offered juicy appointments in a parastatal they are supposedly probing on behalf of government........only in Nigeria will almost $15billion scam occur and yet a year later no one is in jail. So Paul, you are dead wrong.
Prayers for our leaders
Just read Gov Aliyu say Nigerians should pray for their leaders rather than curse and damn them like the jubilation of Yakowa and Azazi's death. One of the greatest saying was made by President Chávez, he said he could still "smell sulphur" left behind by the "devil", George Bush, who had addressed the UN chamber. In nigeria the sulphur stinks to hell, from the leadership that corrupt and mismanaged to the new born baby that aspires to be a future leader. Revolution or Die you fools and Idiots.
Paul, learn from OMO Omoruiyi
stop laudering GEJ. He is a gonner. catching those with cash are limited to those in the opposition camp so as to leave them cash strapped against 2015. They carry money out everyday. At any rate how much are we talking about compared to wholesale looting going on at NNPC? They have taken rug off his feet already, stop wasting your time and ours. he waited in vain for party stalwarts to elect BOT but while himself and Anenih were waiting those he was expecting were at OTA laughing at him. Tukur had to go to OTA to beg. WHY? they are changing everything that Danjuma asked GEJ to do and will soon disgrace him out of office, the script is already written.
The subsidy problem was created under GEJ
The writer cannot be praising GEJ for the fuel subsidy thing. I cannot remember as far back as Babangida but the fuel subsidy issue only became significant during GEJ when the amounts used went up from N200b to over a trillion Naija. So while there has always been some corruption in the subsidy thing, it only got this big under GEJ. Even then, we have still not seen anyone going to jail for stealing monies meant for subsidies!
I disagree with you on two
I disagree with you on two counts:
1. GEJ did not willingly enter the fight again subsidy. In past administrations, subsidy didn't cross N300bn a year, GEJ took it to N2tr a year. Knowing one way or the other once the info gets out all hell will be let loose, he opted for its removal;
2. GEJ has done nothing different on free speech from OBJ. The reason you have several voices speaking up is the continual throw on Nigerians of one inhuman policy to another one; frequent inaction where action is required; continual infliction of pain on the masses without a moment's respite. These were not so in past admin as there were moments of rest from pain so many saw no need to talk. Come to think of it, what has the free speech achieved? How many policies has he reversed because Nigerians rose against it? NONE that I remember! Subsidy issue doesn't count neither do Sanusi's N5000. What action has he ever taken because Nigerian masses demanded it! I can't remember any o!
NO
I really dont think so becouse he cant even repair the damages he willingly allowed to take place, not to talk of doing something new.
GEJ Is Working!!!
The following series of comments are intended to:
1) spoil the party for HATERS and SEE-NO-GOOD mischief makers
2) put a LIE to the propaganda that no work is going on
3) confront LIES and speculations with FACTS, images and testimonies of REAL people on ground
4) prove that TRUTH will ALWAYS prevail over LIES and propaganda.
But the point has to be made that I am not celebrating the works going on, rather I'm pointing them out. Yes, I delight in doing just that so that those who achieve orgasm by hurling insults and abuses, and telling lies will have a bad day
GEJ Is Working! 7
7) In the petroluem sector: the PIB, a comprehensive law to overhaul and reform Nigeria's oil and gas sector, is already with the NASS. The committee charged to release a white paper on the road map to revitalizing existing refineries is currently at work. The nations moribund pipelines and fuel depots are being rehabilitated and RESTORED nationwide. For instance the Aba NNPC depot has been RESTORED (after 10 solid years of being shut down) and currently ensuring steady supply of petroluem products tothe south-eastern states. Other deport RESTORED include Minna, Jos, Kano and Gusau. Work is ongoing to restore the Enugu deport and then Benue deport. The subsidy payment system is being cleaned up as much as possible and the shock of the clean-up is causing fuel scarcity.

GEJ Is Working! 6 (CONTINUED)
Achebe suggests that free and fair elections "will place the true candidates of the people in office,” and lead to "a thriving free press and strong justice system, with checks and balances and corruption-curbing laws NATURALLY finding a footing. He adds: “A new patriotic consciousness has to be developed… based on an awareness of the responsibility of leaders to the led… and disseminated by civil society, schools and intellectuals. It is from this kind of environment that a leader, humbled by the trust placed upon him by the people, will emerge, willing to use the power given to him for the good of the people.”
Sorry for those looking for anti-corruption WAR-LORD like Buhari, NOTHING can fight corruption better than free and fair elections.

GEJ Is Working! 6
6) For me the MOST IMPORTANT achievement and LEGACY of the GEJ administration is CULTURIZATION of free and fair elections. The 2011 elections, adjudged by both local and international observers as free and fair, was the turning point intthe history of Nigeria. It effectively marked the END of DO-OR-DIE and Amala politics. Since then, free and fair elections is the RULE. The last Edo and Ondo elections were no different.Free and fair elections is the NUMBER ONE and MOST IMPORTANT dividend of democracy and has the potential for unleashing other dividends of democracy. The import of free and fair election to our development was emphasised by no other person than Achebe himself in his latest book-There was a country. Under the sub-heading “State Resuscitation and Recovery”, Achebe suggests that “the Nigerian solution” will come in stages. “First we have to nurture and strengthen our democratic institutions – and STRIVE for the freest and fairest elections possible.
GEJ Is Working! 5
5) Significant progress is being made in terms of road construction. In the last 1 to 2yrs,11 inherited(most abandoned) road projects, were COMPLETED, including: Vom-Manchok road (Plateau State), Yola-Numan road (Adamawa State), Gombe Bye-pass (Gombe State), Kaduna Refinery road (Kaduna State), Kano-Daura-Mai Adua road (Katsina State), Aba-Owerri road (Abia State), Onitsha-Owerri road (Anambra State) and Oyo-Ogbomosho road (Oyo State).
Massive work is ongoing in various other highways in the 6 geo-political zones, including ongoing dualisation of Abuja–Abaji–Lokoja Road, Kano–Potiskum–Maiduguri Road;the Benin–Ore–Shagamu Expressway; the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway; and the construction of the Loko–Oweto bridge( across River Benue), East-West road, etc

NO HOPE FOR NIGERIAN
I thought the shoeless man will know how scourching heat affect ones feet but I was amazed how he forgot easily after entering cool spot in Aso rock.
One word GEJ should know is that ordinary Nigerian are not happy with his administration due to CORRUPTION, INSECURITY, BAD ROADS, LOW EDUCATION INITIATIVES, BAD JUDICIARY, HEALTH HAZARDS, COMMITTEE AFTER COMMITTEE AND ENDLESS PROMISE WITH NO RESULT. My answer is capital NO!
