The Lazy Politicians Of The South East
It is a heart-wrenching scenario to see the orchestrated marginalization of the South East of Nigeria by the Government of Nigeria; any possible thing to strangulate the region is being thrown at it. However, I am extremely miffed by the simple fact that Igbos appear to be part of the grand design to self-destruct this once vibrant Zone. Our politicians at the top level of the scheme of things in Nigeria are continuously failing to fight for the people that elected[?] them. We have been abandoned by our Abuja politicians who collect huge sums of our money as salaries and perks while lying openly about representing us.
I find it particularly immoral for Igbo politicians who climbed on the shoulder of Ndi Igbo to scale the fence of hunger into opulence to now abandon the people to their wretched fate. It is true that Nigerian politicians represent the worst pack of capricious leeches and liars, it is true that they are notorious for pocketing obscene sums of money meant for societal development; what is however very true is that the politicians from the South East are men and women who see politics as a means to an end-the end being a break away from want and hunger. Although it would be wrong and insensitive of me to address all the big-politicians of Igbo extraction as belonging to this class of selfish clowns, the disturbing fact remains that collectively, they are not getting it right.
Of particular interest to me is the state of roads in the entire South East region of Nigeria; a place sinfully notorious for having the worst road network in the entire country. In an earlier essay, I likened a sojourn to the South East to an attempt at traversing the Biblical Golgotha-a place that is abundantly wretched and depressing. Our roads are completely treacherous and lives are lost daily on them while both motor vehicles and the human minds are shattered. There is no denying the fact that the Federal Government of Nigeria remains sinfully aloof to the plight of the Igbo nation; what with the lies and outright pettiness that is employed in handling every calamity that befalls Ndi Igbo?
President Goodluck Jonathan should be man enough to admit his shame by apologizing to us for being part of a government that orchestrated this neglect and for now leading a government that continues to snuff the life out of the South East.
I expect to hear what the Federal Government and its errand men and women of Igbo origin will say to us about the state of the Enugu Onitsha Highway, Onitsha-Owerri Highway, Enugu-Port Harcout Highway and Nnewi-Uga road. These are roads that aptly paint a picture of a war-torn Biafra during the civil war; totally dilapidated and washed out. Though Julius Berger Nig Plc is known to handle serious road repairs and construction in Nigeria, I fail to see the comic relief in the choice of a not-really-funny CCC to undertake the repairs of Federal roads in the South East.
This is a company that at best appears more like an apprentice in roads construction-from the Owerri-Onitsha road to the now non-existent Enugu-Onitsha “express road”, this company is engaged in what could best be described as an act of war against the people of the South East. The story is that the Federal Government is not releasing the needed funds to power these contracts.
This is where I have a serious grudge against all the elected members of the National Assembly who are Igbos; what are they doing about the apparent neglect of their region by the government they serve? Where then is that moral justification for throwing caution to the wind by “voting for Jonathan and not the PDP” when it has been revealed by no other person than the current Minister for Works, Arc Mike Onolememem that instead of the N7b required, only N300m was budgeted for the repair of Enugu-Onitsha “express road” in 2011? I did not vote for President Jonathan because I refused to be seduced by that sinister argument presented by the leadership of Ndi Igbo that they were voting for Mr Jonathan Goodluck, and not the PDP-nothing could be farther from the truth.
Elected members from other regions of Nigeria form pressure groups to press the case for a greater government investment in their regions and they most times succeed- the South East is best known to have elected and selected members whose agbata-ekee mentality propels them towards fighting for their own welfare and pockets! Instead of fighting to bring development closer to their people, our elected members of NASS continue to pollute our environment with fumes coming from the many SUVs they use in driving us further into extinction-not forgetting the loud sirens that announce their presence.
The collapse of the South East of Nigeria is complete; the glaring lack of any form of infrastructural development makes the place a horrible place to live in. The average Igbo folk is comfortable with a thick sense of apathy and total disregard to anything that reeks of government; this is borne out of the fact that Nigeria as a nation continues to close its nose at the stench wafting from the sore wounds of Ndi Igbo. This could well explain the Igbo man’s shallow pride at being egalitarian and republican in nature; I have everything against this mind-frame because it nurtures a situation where we fail to hold our governments accountable.
By surrendering our rights to our government, we have accepted to expect that government to cater for our needs and provide an enabling environment to help us achieve our dreams. We have thus chosen representatives to help us tell this government what our needs are but alas, one continues to see a case of total betrayal and abandonment.
It is not yet late in the day for our elected representatives to rise up to the occasion and bring development to Igbo land, it will be really uplifting for any Igbo member of the National Assembly to point to one completed project financed by him/her using the millions collected in our name as “Constituency Development Funds”. I chose the word “uplifting” carefully here because, it is no secret that these men and women pocket hundreds of millions of Naira which they collect in our name without bothering to give something back to the society.
Everywhere in Igbo land, I continue to see men and women who went to Abuja as either “Distinguished Senators” or members of the House of Representatives as honest individuals only to come back physically bloated with the attendant now macho financial muscle. I continue to marvel at this rapid growth, I continue to wonder at the speed with which they build giant mansions and acquire expensive motor vehicles and tastes, and I continue to cringe and tear at my head at the apparent misplacement of values and priorities. And then I ask is this what politics is all about?
A politics that celebrates lying to your own people and using them as a means to an end is pathetic and sad. Because of the obscene money accruable to elected politicians in Nigeria, it continues to be an enterprise that promotes the worst set of charlatan values and mediocre characters. For the purpose of this essay, I pray the politicians from the South East and Nigeria as a whole to see their trade as instrument to be directed towards a service to humanity.
The evil that continue to thrive in Nigeria will not be wished away by the prayers offered daily by our religious men and women, the hunger, the diseases, the crimes, the total lack of trust, the hopelessness that stalk our nation will not grow wings and fly away. They won’t; but I genuinely believe that much difference will be made if our politicians who claim to fight for the people come out to do so. God will not come down from the sky to better our lot.
We, the people are dying and those elected to work for us should better give us succor before it is too late.

@Chigozie we cannot all be altar boys
Are u talking about the old PHC colony which was under the control of the igbos for decades and still is up till date-following the sale of the state by Odili, and Amaechi to u? Ernest Ikoli was appionted Editor of Daily Times at the age of 24 and taught mathmatics at kings college Lagos. Thankfully most of those the brits used in Kings college, came from Rivers state-So dont give me that crap about igbos teaching rivers people how to spell bonny in tombia. Rivers people made contacts with the white man long before the igbos-but for their humility-which I call supidity, they wld have been ahead of you centuries before the catholics priest arrived to baptise you as their altar boys. And dont panel beat me with stories of yr regret-about votes u cast for Gej. Are the votes from the south east, not what Buhari is using to chase GEJ in the courts? Any joy in such acts? I begi!
Deri - You have shown your true colour
My problem with the likes of Deri and some visionless ones from their region is their poor memory and really poor mental capacity. Where will the south south be today without the Ibos. I was discussing with an elderly opinion leader in Port Harcourt today and he told me that back in the 40's till 70's all their teachers were Ibos. These teachers trained your brainless people and made them who they are today. How have u paid back - By shouting DOMINATION BY IBOS.
You simply lack self confidence. The Ibo man's mien and aura will continue to innundate you. We are simply unstoppable. The Ibo man will enter your city with a cellophane bag and build a mansion within 5 years. You remain where you are. Even coming to beg crumbs from him. Keep waiting for 50% resource control. Watch out the next 5 years where the Ibos will be. Anuofia!!!!
Re: The Lazy Politicians of the South East
Please the right caption should have been 'The Greedy and Spineless Politicians of The South East' because that is what they are.
Out of greed they sold out what looked like their birthright as far as Nigerian politics is concerned and are now crying foul pursuing crumbs. Its a pity.
Not sure it is real Deri of SR: Stop the Ijaw/Igbo war of words
I can't believe the Deri here is the same internet warrior Deri from the southsouth. Some of you may have been tricked by an impostor using the name Deri to pull off a war of words against the Ijaw.
@ Toldyou,
You are the greatest joker by saying that in the next two generations, the Igbo would have become either part of greater Yoriuba or Hausa|Fulani. Lesser and lesser Igbos, unless those deaf ones now live in Hausa|Fulani lands. On every Christmas period, Lagos is almost empty, that's a sign that Igbos know where they come from. You are a prophet of doom. The Igbo may have self-centred politicians now but do not expect that to continue. We chased the like of Ikedi Ohakim away. Ohakim believed political power could only come by worshipping the Hausa|Fulani. Others like him may soon face similar fate.
IT IS A SHAME WHAT IS HAPPENING TO SOUTH EAST
Unless God comes to our aid, the south east will never matter in the scheme of things in this country. First, they don't have true leaders, unless Governor Rochas will give this. All we have, most of them are contractors, importers and exporters. The South East have lost their voice in God's ministry work, no voice in any developmental stride, only living in their past glory. All the business cities that were the glory of the south east are now garbarge dumps.Non functional industries littering everywhere. It really a shame.
Endagered
In the next 2 generations Ndigbo would have been truely neutralized. They would either be part of greater Yoruba or Hausa/Fulani kingdoms. It is actually getting late.
U are very stupid
for you to say that Igbos should go to hell, then u must be very stupid, u and ur people have always been houseboys in Nigeria, u are no better than the average Igbo man, Your people have always been lazy and drinking ogogoro, u dare say Igbos should go to hell, is your tribe better than my tribe, despite the Biafran war set back, we worked hard to rise to the top, If all the Igbo state vote for Buhari, do you think Jonathan could have won the election, the writer is only talking about infrastructural neglect and you start to say stupid things with your ogogoro mouth, thats why u and your people will never be better than Igbos, bicos u all spend your time sleeping with ur neighbor wife or drinking ogogoro. Stupid animal.
@ Deri the Internet Egbesu war Lord
Deri, Madness has finally encompassed your Ijaw nation. We breed Industralist and your region breed Militancy.A nation is never measured by her Political Capability but by her economical Capability. Yes,an Ijaw man is now in power and what has he done for the common Ijaw man? Economically,Igbos are the backbone of Nigeria no doubt about that.We will continue to dominate your uncivilized region and her Indigenes educationally and economically unless your clueless and Incompetent leaders choose to spend their stolen wealth in educating her citizens. Educated Ijaw women are marrying Igbo men cos your men lack confidence and vision. My Advise for you is,take a shower with Bleach to brighten up your skin complexion,If it will help elevate your inferior complexity,BASTARD!!
Did GEJ push Igbos to vote tambuwal or Islamic banking
Igbos should go to hell with their baby milk politics of old. This is how they cry marginalisation every time there is a new government in place. They had their best outing with IBB, Abacha, and OBJ. Under the present dispensation they still hold key positions both in the senate and the house to the chagrin of the south west. States in the south west often use their resources to better their lot. The south east is also an oil producing state. What have they been doing with their oil revenue. Most road contracts are awarded to firms owned by Igbos. We witnessed how Iwuayanwu was once awarded contracts to construct roads in Enugu. Put yr house in order and stop playing the blame game with Tambuwal and buhari.
Southeast POLITICIANS, Another state in the SE is long overdue.
The greatest disservice politicians of southeast origin shall do its people is to acquiesce to other amendmendments in the constitution without another state first created in any location in the southest. If they do, the amendment must leave the southeast still marginalised. The southeast since 1996 has lost billions of Naira federal allocation to other areas of Nigeria. In matters of application of quota or federal character, as well as representation in the federal houses, the southeast is cheated. A Constitution Review Committee headed by Senator Ibrahim Mantu was deterrmined to have a sixth state created in the southeast. Even the last Senate Committee Chairman on Federal Character, Kogi state-born senator Smart Adeyemi, voiced the correctness for a new state in the southeast. Unlike previous leaders, are the recent years' politicians from the southeast only after SUVs and fat bank accounts?
The problems is the orient is
The problems is the orient is that of VALUE sustainability and ACCOUNTABILITY. I will say a greater number of us can't see the benefit of the collective simply because of our post-war mentality of survival. We have a generation in abyss ill-connecting with the entity Nigeria. Are we really of it, with it or just in it?
It is called lack of identity
No one would take the Igbo nation serious after the last election. For 12 yrs u cried marginalisation and when u had a chance to vote in your local party, APGA, atleast at the state and local govt level, u still went for same corrupt PDP .. why ?
Don't u think it would have passed a strong message to the center if u had the whole east in APGA and as we had the whole west in ACN; it would have reflected the dissolution of power to the states we had all been clamouring for but yet strangely the whole of the east went PDP again at the neglect of APGA.
CORRUPT POLITICIANS CUM CONTRACTORS THE PROBLEM
The Federal Government has abandoned their responsiblity in most states, even when contracts are awarded, those that usually got the contracts are corrupt politicians who will end up pocketing the contract sum as their own share of the National cake. Most of them registered fictious company names which they use to curry contracts worth billions of Naira. Nigeria can not continue this way. I hate to say this, but it is the truth, it was during the time of Chief Tony Anenih as Minister of Works that little attention got to South East, it was during that the Benin Bypass was constructed, since 2003 till date, all the federal roads in the South East has been left abandoned.
VERY SAD SITUATION
My brother your article is a sad reminder of the deplorable state of infrastructure in the South East by extension the rest of Nigeria, I have to admit as an Igbo Man it pains me to see the state of decay of that region. on the other hand, it is no more the South East alone is suffering this irresponsibility from the Federal Government, other regions of Nigeria too are feeling the same thing, the only different of course lies in the individual states, some states are lucky to have a progressive minded Governor while others are unlucky to have corrupt minded and self serving Governors, which is why developement varies from state to state, even in the South Eastern States.
