“Integrity requires three steps: discerning what is right and what is wrong; acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost; and saying openly that you are acting on your understanding of right from wrong." – Stephen L Carter

Months ago, before the 2011 voter registration exercise began in Nigeria some of us were very excited as we saw this as an opportunity to effect the much-needed change in our country. I geared up and began non-partisan campaigns aimed at youths in Nigeria to ensure that they register, vote, and protect their votes. I spent at least four to six hours everyday campaigning on social network platforms, TV/Radio, and print media. My team and I did everything we could from explaining the process, to following people on twitter who posted pictures of their registration cards, to giving away cellphone airtime and even went as far as helping local INEC officials with some of the technical difficulties they faced at the commencement of the registration exercise. We are currently working on an incidence reporting initiative to help curb election malpractices. What's in it for me you might ask...like I tell everyone who has asked me, some of us just really believe in a better Nigeria. If I have the resources to make change, I wont hesitate to put it towards just that. I am Nigerian, I have a daughter who is Nigerian and I would love to see my daughter raised in this country. I am a true patriot and I have consistently promoted the idea that the Nigerian situation can and should improve with the right leadership.

During the voters’ registration campaign, I got together with a few friends and colleagues of mine to discuss ways to increase youth participation in the democratic process of our country using our music platform. During one of those discussions, we came up with the idea to have multiple concerts across the country, which would only be accessed by registered voters. It felt like a great idea because with this initiative, we could all join forces and get more attention from our intended demographic. Household names such as PSquare, D’banj, eLDee, Tuface, MI, Banky W, Naeto C, Sound Sultan, Timaya, Wizkid, Duncan Mighty and the likes, would easily fill up arenas in any city so why not have a free concert that people can only be a part of if they present their voters registration card.  To the best of my knowledge, we came up with a tag called “Our time” for the concert series. In order to avoid the initiative being politicized, we agreed to raise funds through non-partisan means alone.

We put little resources together and quickly shot TV commercials since there were only a few days left of the voter registration period. The commercials were immediately published on TV/Internet and it generated a good amount of attention. At the end of the voter registration period, there was overwhelming evidence of the success of the initiative and we all looked forward to entertaining our registered voter fans at the concert series.

Fast forward to March 17, 2011. I am watching television and I see a commercial that looked just like the one we shot for our campaign. It was indeed footage from our voter registration initiative commercial, however this version was manipulated to suit a different purpose. The new edit describes a free concert featuring D’banj, Tuface, MI, eLDee, PSquare, BankyW, Duncan Mighty, Wizkid and others, which supposedly holds in Abuja on March 25, 2011 and totally omits our voter registration campaign initiative. The advert now ends with a different tagline, “supported by Our Time Group, Youths rising up for GEJ.” I immediately had a cold feeling of shock, betrayal, deceit, and misrepresentation because this was the exact opposite of what we created the initiative for. Now I was being touted as a representative of the youth in support of the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan presidential campaign. What’s even more interesting is that Silverbird TV ran this new advert before and after the Dbanj interview with Goodluck Jonathan, as if it were part and parcel of that GEJ campaign initiative. I called all parties involved to express my disapproval and disgust at how anyone would take such an innocent initiative and manipulate it to misrepresent the interest and support of the youth. To my dismay, another slap in the face came in the form of a full-page newspaper advert in The Vanguard of March 22, 2011 with my picture, among others artists, advertising the same GEJ Presidential campaign concert.

It is sad and indeed worrying that people continue to take advantage of good intentions and initiatives for selfish and corrupt purposes. I use this medium to make public that I have never, and even more so now will never be a part of any campaign for President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, therefore please do not expect me to be at the supposed concert. Let me be clear, I have nothing against the supposed concert and its participants; I just prefer to be consulted about such a manipulation of interest beforehand. I have never received any money or gift of any kind from any member or supporter of the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan presidential campaign or any presidential campaign for that matter, neither have I volunteered my services in support of any such campaign. I’ll be glad to announce if and when I do but until then, I don’t appreciate my image and likeness being exploited for political purposes without my consent.

RE: POLITICS OF OUR TIME

Eldee, I feel you. You are a discovery to my kind of thinking. Anytime I am talking to people, I always think I talk to only myself. People play politics nowadays for personal aggrandizement.
It is really unfortunate that Nigerians have forsaken politics in the hands of politicians while they are supposed to be the custodians of it.

Only God will help us in

Only God will help us in Nigeria, I am not suprised that you seem to be the only one speaking up. When the idea was going around everyone said amen and yes,but when money gets passed around suddenly everyone wants to answer his fathers name. This is the one of the foundational problems in Nigeria, everyone is after themselves. What happened to been your brothers keeper I guess those days are long gone. I applaud your effort do not let this happening change future endevours to motivate the youths instead this experience should give you new fire for a better Nigeria.

We were not born to be ruled by PDP, we were born to mak choices

GEJ is a good man but we cannot give PDP anymore time in Nigeria to gamble with the future of over 120 million people?..not acceptable my people...PDP is a bad omen.We have witnessed nothing but poverty, hardship, penury and calamity..I tell you why you or anyone you know should not vote for Goodluck Jonathan. Take a look back at Yaradua, he was a man of impeccable character, cool and of high integrity but the PDP rendered him useless because, at the elms of affairs were men of questionable character, looters, thiefs, murderers, callous and men who have no regard for humanity..These men are still there and will render GEJ useless just like they did Yaradua. So Fellow Nigerians, we cannot afford to gamble with the lives of over 80% of Nigerians who live on less than a dollar a day, we cannot afford to gamble with the future of graduates who cannot afford to buy a piece of suit to attend interviews, we cannot afford to gamble with the remaining souls that have not been lost to Niger delta crisis, Jos crisis or to accidents on Lagos/ore express road and other Nigeria roads in a state of cataclysm made by evil men.We were not born to be ruled by PDP, we were born to make choices..so, Why are we we afraid of change?..VOTE BUHARI/BAKARE CPC...God bless Nigeria

Now eldee is indeed the Big

Now eldee is indeed the Big Boi... Now here is a star indeed!!! you just won a die hard fan!!!

Good work Eldee

Your intentions were honorable and you carried them out in honestly.

However, you must not forget that politicians are like diapers, they both need changing regularly, and for the same reasons.

Your experience, as far as this is concerned, simply reinforces that the country needs a "diaper" change.

All they've done is further solidify your integrity. Stay strong.

God Bless El Dee

First and foremost, Thank you El Dee! thank you, thank you, thank you.....May The Almighty Bless the works of your hands in mysterious ways.

As a Nigerian youth also in the glamourous side of the industry, I am very proud of you. I'm sure many youths feel the same. D' Banj's days are numbered. He would be shocked. Look at veterans like 2face, you think they don't approach him too? ...Before D'Banj could smell stardom 2face was already lounging in it, yet you cannot see him do stupid things like this all in the worship of money.

The "interview" with GEJ by koko master was a disaster! Lacked intent and purpose. The stupid boy was just busy bowing up and down like a frog saying yes sir, yes sir.....i mean, it was clear Ghana-must-go must have been received.

GEJ too now gave him according to reports, a bullet proof GMC Suv, 2 SSS and 15 police as regular escorts anywhere he goes! For what? who wan waste bullet kill the stupid fool? .....Who will pay for all that? Tax payers of course! You and I will pay.
GEJ will suffer from one tribunal to another after leaving office, the Northerners are patiently waiting for their pound of revenge flesh(...that one no concern me though), Nigerians too are waiting. ....D'Banj, we are waiting. You do enter our black list---MUMU.

what are you saying young man?

you said: "Jonathan did not manipulate your jingles to suit his political ambition"

I say: did you read this piece? did you even look at the links that were provided at the end? The use of a brand name without permission from the appropriate quarters is unlawful, clearly "eldee" (Mr. Dabiri's brand) has been used without permission to further GEJ's political ambition. The responsibility for this act ends at his table.

you said:" Anyone can take a little from what you did to make their iwn (own?), at the end of the jingle, it did not say "organised ir (or?)produced by el dee" "

I say: "Plagiarism is defined in dictionaries as "the wrongful appropriation, close imitation, or purloining and publication, of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions, and the representation of them as one's own original work." - (culled from Wikipedia)

In saner climes, nobody "takes a little" of what you have done without permission or reference, talk less of taking everything you have done and appending another name to it.

Mr. Dabiri has done nothing wrong.

Me I go yarn me I go speak my mind - Eldee

Eldee speaks Owu dey town... God bless my brother

Re: Leave sentiments

You missed the point.

There would have been nothing wrong, absolutely nothing wrong, if D'banj had done what he did in private capacity. But he chose to use an organization that was set up for a different purpose as a vehicle! Or you want to tell me there's no difference between "vote and protect your vote" and "vote for GEJ"?

That's so deceitful and has PDP and FRAUD written all over it. The whole idea was to sensitize people into understanding the power behind their civic duty of voting in an election, then some desperate dude decides to mislead people.

This is not uncommon in our society, it's just so shocking that D'banj was the one involved here because I had expected that that generation of Nigerian musicians would pick up from where Fela stopped. God have mercy on Dagrin's soul - that boy was surely going to make a difference :-(

Brave brother

ElDee is one brave brother. Not many would do what he's done (and is doing). At a time when his colleagues and elders in the entertainment industry are falling over themselves and selling their votes, their consciences and their souls for a little more than a pittance, the dude is spitting fire and saying it like it is! God bless you, ElDee. Nigeria needs artistes to fill the advocacy void created since the Abami Eda passed on. Keep waxing strong. You've got a massive following.

Brave brother!

ElDee is one brave brother. Not many of us would do what he's done. At a time when his colleagues and elders in the industry are falling over themselves and selling their souls and consciences for a little more than a pittance, the dude is spitting fire and saying it like it is! Keep at it, bro. You've got a massive following.

Eldee coolio

Eldee, we need people like u in this
Country.dbanj is deviating 4 selfish gains

Words of eldeee

BIG UPS!! 4 ELDEE

My fellow youths, this just proves that
there is a blessing in disguise in every
situation. It took D'banj's interview wth
GEJ to expose the greet and curruption.
People that were going to vote for them
Have had a rethink cos of that interview.
I believe that all these things are workin
For our GOOD. Now its left to us not to
compromise on integrity and vote for
Change!!!

Leave sentiments

El dee...it's all good. Jonathan did not manipulate your jingles to suit his political ambition neither did dbanj. Don't push too much to make it seem like someone is now sponsoring to be saying all this. Anyone can take a little from what you did to make their iwn, at the end of the jingle, it did not say "organised ir produced by el dee" your a good guy,let people see that aboout you,not you telling people about it.

For those of you who think D banj is poor for being on a programme with goodluck jonathan for monetary reasons, why did you tell that to opera whiphery when she did support Obama? Let's forget sentiments and concentrate on reality.

I ADD LANRE,TO THE LIST I

I ADD LANRE,TO THE LIST I HAVE OF BANKY W WHEN HE RESPONDED TO DR.REUBEN ABATI. MO RESPEXT FOR YOU MAN. YOU MAKE US HAVE FAITH IN NIGERIA. THOSE CRAZY MILLIONS THAT GEJ PUT INTO THE INDUSTRY ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT THE NEEDS OF THE INDUSTRY. ARTISTS,YOU HAVE A ROLE IN THIS LIFE TYM OH! FOR POSTERITY SAKE,ARISE!!!
I LOVE YOU ELDEE!

He who has ears....

Shame! We still have eons to go. Maybe decades with prayers and fasting. Eldee made his point in clear and simple words; no grouse.
Abject Poverty has been ingrained into the fabric of the society and very few people, even the elite haven't the capability to think straight; how much more the poor.
Being poor isn't necessarily alluding to material possession, it is also a state of mind.
D'BANJ is poor!
Good going Eldee.

I am proud of you Lanre. Good

I am proud of you Lanre. Good name is better than silver and gold

Democracy needs a solid ground, - unity first b/4....

There is no basis for democracy in Nigeria. Democracy needs to grow and flourish on a firm, hard and solid ground,-which means a united platform. Nigeria is built on different platforms, some porous ground, others fragile grounds, unstable and indeed very unsuitable for a democracy to take off. Let us prepare the ground and make it fertile for a democracy to germinate, grow and flourish. A sovereign national conference SNC is all we need to do in this respect. SNC shall produce a Nation, made in Africa. All the various ethnic groups will be proud to belong to it. There shall be a genuine citizenry and genuine leadership. It is sad to remember that President Obasonjo (OBJ) did not understand why he was advised on convening a sovereign national conference SNC. He messed it up like he used to, in everything he does because of ignorance. President Jonathan's stand on SNC leaves me wondering why a former University don is another ignoramus at ASO Rock. There has to be SNC b/4 democracy take off in Nigeria. There has to be a unification process to bring all the different ethnic groups on a conference table to agree on how to be together as one country or as two, three or more countries with economic benefits on a solid plate. Such SNC is needed for putting a hard crusting on the 1914 amalgamation. The past military governments, wittingly or unwittingly, destroyed the four Regions that had fused into a democratic platform just before 1966. If allowed to continue, the fusion could have produced a very hard and solid ground -comparable to Indian united platform for a stable democracy. Lord Lugard tried to fuse two protectorates to make room for unity before democracy. Later, our neo-colonialists divided the two protectorates into thirty-six pieces. What an errant nonsense. These States were imposed on disunited ethnic groups under force of arms and intimidation characteristic of Jihadism. Really, there is no Unity, no common ground, no love, no true and genuine citizen of Nigeria in Nigeria and so there is absolutely no true and genuine leadership/ judiciary/ INEC / institutions are fake for the same reasons of ethnic dichotomy. Everybody in Nigeria is a fake Nigerian. You are either Igbo, or Yoruba or Hausa or Benin or Fulani or...... You cannot be a Hausa and an Igbo at the same time. It is hard to understand how one Hausa oneYoruba, one Ijaw, one Benin, one Fulani and one Igbo will make one Nigeria without an acceptable common ground . Let's face the reality. What is holding the ethnic groups together is the crude oil , it is not Love in a democracy.
The whole exercise by INEC and the various 63 Politburos in Nigeria is a ruse to deceive the International Community and the Nigeria Citizens, who believe, and wrongly too, that Nigeria is immersed in a democracy and is being involved in a democratic exercise. But so far, the whole exercise is a ruse. That huge amount of money given to INEC-chieftain and the cost in terms of human resources have come to nothing and the wasted fund means nothing to PDP government. 2011 presidential- and governorship election campaigns are already violent , already undemocratic, already not free, very unfair and very worrisome both in the North and in the south. People are seeing, daily, how PDP governments in these states are busy preparing the substratum to celebrate election victory. Every community had received and shared billions of Naira, bags of rice, bags of salt, motorcycles (Okada) in a direct exchange for votes. Traditional rulers and religious leaders had been bribed already with billions of Naira to share to their subjects/members. Limousine cars, jeeps, and small buses had already been distributed to influential persons to help the ruling party in a state, return to power . Look here, boys and girls, university students, jobless graduates, the 2011 election is already rigged and many dishonourable Judges had been positioned and hoisted at the core of Electoral Tribunals to complete the magic and rubberstamp the results. After that, they will tell you and the world,: "Nigerian democracy is a nascent democracy that needs five hundred years to mature," while your senators, MPs and Presidents- earn emoluments, ten times more than those of any developed democratic country, in Europe or in America. And your misery continues to worsen. Please, whoever wins this April election had rigged it. You are the youths of different nationalities, you are the majority in a true democracy where your votes determine the winner. But in Nigeria your votes don't matter at all because , minority in politics wines everything. You allow the minority blindfold your eyes, close your mouths, tie your hands/feet together and take away all keys to the public treasury. You sit down de look. It is your time now to say " no to cheating and looting" by the minority in politics. You must pour out massively onto the streets and market squares, in every city and hamlet to cry aloud demanding a true Nigerian constitution with a true democracy immersed in a genuine sovereign national conference( SNC )that shall remould this ram-shackle old North- and South Protectorates that had lost its direction and importance. Your votes will matter very much after a SNC and believe me, the new structure with a true fiscal federation will always be peaceful for a free and fair democratic elections. B/4 then, every exercise shall be a ruse to deceive the entire public. Do you understand ?
All youths in South-South, South-East and South-West rise up for your rights to a peaceful free and fair democratic elections through Sovereign National Conference SNC. Reject the outcome of already rigged April elections.
Umu Oke -Germany.

God bless you Eldee d Don

there is saying that musicians are like prostitutes they follow whoever dole out money to them....but Eldee you are not part of them....i am proud having someone like you as fellow Nigerian...indeed there is hope in this country and i pray that your daughter will grow in a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria...

Wat gives u d impression dat dis young man came out wiv this information bcos he's seekin fame??? He saw wat he deemed as being a wrong deed n is tryin to clear his name frm d mess..why then do u misconstrue dis n make it seem like he's tryin to get accolades for d article...dats quite petty of u...its precisely bcos of pple like u wiv ur mindset that has kept Nigeria backwards for so long...frm ur comment u sounded like someone who passed behind a school instead of through a school...u shud sit n v a rethink before respondin to dis...and then read eldee's article all over again before reachin a decisive conclusion...

Well Done Eldee...

Well done Eldee may almighty Allah continue to bless with good knowledge and understanding...

Dbanj days are Numbers!!!! Make una tell him to beware.... If United Kingdom did not give him opportunity to nourish his talent. He will never be where he is today...

We shall see where is going to END.

Foolish BOY claiming to be an ICON image of FELA...

weldone eldee

Am glad dt an artiste I rly appreciate has nt let me down.am glad dt u hv nt gotten involved in their stupiD money politics.we d youths of nigeria wl nt mortgage our future.D'banj is shame 2 d youths of ds nation.

u re foolish

U sound stupid and ignorant.

It disheartening that this country refuses to change, that creativity is not encouraged. Let us hope that the future is better, eldee you've done your best, with good intentions.

You have just further

You have just further asserted the fact that true intergrity is a great responsibility and it requires u doing what is right and just at all times regardless of financial gains that are offered, solicited or expected. A lot of youths of our time have come to equate being successful to just money alone;we the youths of this nation must awaken to the responsibilty of making of this country better. Pls let us vote right..thnx eLDee for clearing th

Hmmmmmm!!! Eldee Dis is a

Hmmmmmm!!! Eldee Dis is a welcome way of thinking! Kudos to you. It is so sad that we ƭђε "so called youths" who r supposed to be ƭђε pillar of our society have decided to follow in d traditions of elders b4 us. I was so disgusted and disappointed at d interview done with GEJ by Dbanj! There was just no content in it! And that was supposed to be ƭђε representative of ƭђε youths. For M̶̲̅ε̲̣, I had argued that if he was ordered to ask particular questions, he should have turned ƭђε offer to interview downn. We shouldn't sell our conscience. Its so so old school. Pls people let's put moni aside and do ƭђε right tin. Vote wisely. Vote for Change. We can do it if we try!!!

Two sides

Left to me, eldee sounded nt just lyk a man of integrity bt also lyk a courageous guy who knws wot he his doin. But then there r two sides to every story, i blieve dbanj and them others wil surely ve an xplanation, so to my best opinion we shuld nt b TOO quick to judge especialy in cases lyk dis where image, prestige n integrity are atstake...ONE LUV NIGERIANS. PEACE.

Ur action is worthy of emulation

I am indeed surprised that @ dis age n time.some people still stand 4 the truth and uphold its cause,I just wanna say kudos 2 u 4 upholding d truth,if all Nigerian youths could be this way, without being myopic and shallow in their reasoning,I think dis country will be a better place,I am of d opinion that Olanrewaju Dabiri is a true ambassador of truth, and should be praised 4 his efforts.

Assumptions

As usual, Nigerians have made assumptions without verifying the exact happenings. Eldee has merely stated that he is not a part of the GEJ campaign. He did not say Dbanj or the other artists connived to use the video for the Gej campaign. What we should ask is 'who converted the video footage for the GEJ campaign'. Legally Eldee has the right to sue anyone or any group who have used the advert without consent. As usual, we are our own enemies, creating tornados, tsunamis and earthquakes with our words and actions. Its obvious that Eldee thought long and hard before posting a response. Youth of Nigeria, let's think long and hard before reacting to every piece information we come across. Let's verify, let's clarify and let's above all vote for change!
