The Reasons Why Most Nigerians Today Are Not Proud To Be Nigerians By Sunday Iwalaiye

Which country in the world today is run like Nigeria in all truth, honesty, reality and ramifications? What benefits have ordinary Nigerians received from this nation's oil wealth to date? How can you be proud, dedicated or patriotic to a nation that has no plan for you or her youths that face very high unemployment rates, hopelessness and a bleak future? Which country in the world that has this type of enormous oil wealth but decided to pay a poverty wage of $110 a month as the national minimum wage to her workers and indirectly denied them their basis life necessities?

Which country in the world today will close her human eyes to justice or public accountability by allowing her own leaders to loot the nation dry, then awarded them with her prestigious national awards or state pardon and then allow these heavily corrupt public officials in and outside the government to walk on their major streets freely and to continue to enjoy their loot or the ill-gotten wealth? Which country will officially pardon an international rogue like the former governor of Bayelsa State Mr. Alamieyeseigha that is still wanted in Britain and United States for money laundering? How can you be nationalistic and patriotic to a country that allowed her religious bigots and fanatics to commit genocides, murders, arsons and looting all in the name of their religion and will never allow these cold-blooded killers to face the weight of justice, denied the dead and their families justice or any financial compensations for their huge human and material losses?

Which country will allow a handful of her government officials to steal the pension funds that are meant for her seniors or retirees who had served Nigerian faithfully with their life and time, but are now denied a decent retirement in their sunset years? Which country in the whole world will blame the demons for her inability to provide the citizens who are tax payers with electricity instead of arresting the true culprit which is the official corruption and the mismanagement of the Nigerian state resources by her officials that made the provision of electricity practically impossible in Nigeria today? Which country in the world today will blame demons for her air disasters when her airports are never maintained properly, modernized and her aviation workers are incompetent?

Which nation in the world today will allow her national air carrier (the Nigeria Airways) to become history due to the direct effects of the decades of official corruption and mismanagement of the airline funds by her top officials and then allow those corrupt officials to get away with their corrupt practices? Which country in the world today uses 30% of her federal budget to pay salaries and allowances for her 17,500 public elected and appointed officials (0.01% of all Nigerians) in the name of public service and then allow 80% of the ordinary Nigerians to survive on abject poverty of about $1-$2 a day? Which properly thinking Nigerians will be proud to live in a nation that refuses to provide her citizens with their basic social services, national infrastructures and human rights?

Which nation today will neglect her entire health care system to rot but will use the state funds to fly her selected officials and their family members to the best hospitals in Europe and North America when they are sick? Which country that truly desires to develop will be running a national educational system that is based on the 20th century outdated programs in the 21st century world? Which country will neglect her own citizens in the foreign nations of the world where they live today when emergency evacuations are needed or their Nigerian passports require to be renewed despite the presence of the Nigerian foreign mission in those country? Which country today in the world will spend 21% of her federal budget on her national security, but she still fails to practically and truly protect the life and the properties of her citizens or residents in all reality?

Food for thought!

Thank you Sunny for your thought provoking write up. However am not surprised that our beloved citizens still come here to refute the fact presented out of sentiment.
The truth remains that the Nigerian problem started when oil was discovered, increased during military rule, compounded during the Northern Rulers era and sustained by the present crop of politicians and Nigerians themselves.President Goodluck Jonathan is not the road contractor who abandoned his contracts after collecting all that was due it. No conscience! He is not the bank manager that abates fraud and corruption because he want to declare good annual profit. He cannot be the police whose pre-occupation is checking citizens pocket to extort the few coins in their pocket. We literally worship big thieves and pen robbers in Nigeria.

The problems and the Solutions.......3

We have to get into a habit of encouraging our politicians to act with integrity when in power rather than abuse and denigrate the few politicians that were in government without embezzling money.

The political system is undoubtedly broke. Today we have a bloated expensive bureaucracy yet significant peoples want more states created (with its increased level of bureaucracy) because they feel weaker (in relative terms) than one or two other tribal groups in the number of its representatives in the senate or house of representatives or governors.

Our leaders are a reflection of us. They are us and we are them. We have to be the change that we want to see! If our friend or family member becomes a minister today and decides to play by the book, would we encourage him or would we abuse him for not using his position to give contracts to us (his relatives and kinsmen)??

BE THE CHANGE WE DESIRE!!!

The problems and the Solutions.......2

Instilling values in your children. Making sure we wait in line to be served as opposed to jumping ahead of other people. We stop going to our professor friends to ensure our children get a place in university ahead of children whose examination scores were better.

We pay our taxes on time and we actually vote rather than complain at home and go missing when the election day arrives!

We stop taking loans from banks or friends and refuse to repay the loans on time and as agreed. We stop demonising our creditors for enforcing the sale of collateral because we have failed to fulfill our side of the bargain. We accept results of elections when we lose. A winner of an election realises that his/ her responsibility is to the entire section that he represents and not solely to the people that actually voted for him.

The problems and the Solutions.......1

Brazil today is in the throes of massive demonstrations against corruption, decay and neglect despite being one of the 21st century's economic phenomenons. In America, there are insinuations that a political elite backed up by corporate money has completely hijacked the electoral system. Senators pay more attention to powerful lobbyists than voters. The same can be said of China, Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and so many other countries. The only question is one of degree.

What is clear is that the Nigerian system is broken but it is a rot that goes from top to bottom. Corruption is the Nigerian culture. Until that is stopped, nothing will change. Change starts in your own homes.

WHOSE FAULT IS IT JONATHAN ABI

Mumu are u just waking up from your self induced slumber? How old were you when late Gani pleaded with you to vote for him? U said Nay to him now you complain-write yeye articles as if the world wants to come to an end-when Nigerians know from the bottom of their heartS that its your people that have been controlling the affairs of the country since 1960. Why turn around to blame Jonathan for all our woes since the british left in 1960? Has Buhari not been there b4/ what about IBB, OBJ late abacha atik abdul-salam NKo?? I begi! Give the oil producing state their dues u say no--fiscal federalism you vehemently oppose it-what else-u take our money from the SS to build abuja-when u know u have no light-roads, health and good schools for the almajiris-u play the blame game on jonathan-as if the British hande over power to him-Fine let us split-if that will serve your economic interest-mumu

OIL WAS DISCOVERED IN 1956-NOT 2011-when GEJ was elected

A friend of mine said he almost wept the day his plane landed at the Port Harcourt International Airport omagwa. And that if he had his way he would have fired the minister of aviation. The car park at the MMA airport according to him, is like a football field where the likes of boko haram drops bombs daily. Sadly our national airline was sold off by El Rufai; a leading voice in APC. Added to the above is the fact that Nigeria has generated over 57 trillion Naira since oil was discovered in the South south in 1956. Nigeria is the only country where the oil bearing communities are not paid anyhthing for the crude oil that oozes out of their land. Instead the money is paid to the centre in Abuja. Ask the average lawmakers in abuja to table the issue of resource control of fiscla federalism-u will be shocked at the way the regional leaders, most especially the Fulani North will attack you. As if Oloibiri is in sokoto state

Which country in the whole

Which country in the whole world whose citizens are mostly spine less cowards who can only bark but can't bite? Its only Nigerians that are can allow themselves to be subjected to this subhuman conditions by their leaders without reacting. .
It only in nigeria that the youth 'the so called future leaders' are activity aiding and abetting corrupt octogenerian politicians to rig elections and rob this country blind.
until we the people of this great country arise and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.... so shall we continue to be slaves and servant to a few criminals who happens to be in government.
But who will bell the cat? When majority are blinded by etenoreligious and tribelistic sentiments.

And what are Nigerians

And what are Nigerians waiting for? For an external help. It won't come.

Tufiakwa Nigeria.

God bless you Sunday. It's 2013 n still no permanent solution to the power problem and many parts of Nigeria are buying water. The basic-est of basic things still missing. Driving on a good road perceived as a luxury. Funny enough the few people with power travel to other countries, see and enjoy how things work there yet when they get back do nothing because they r worshiped like they came from Heaven. Smart countries seek bilateral agreements of different forms with other countries to help their young be able to move out and work/live/develop outside to solve their unemployment problems because they see it as a service to their young. Sometimes I think the Young in Nigeria over-respect the older ones which gives them the power to do wrong and go unquestioned. Those within Nigeria don't even realise they are still living like cavemen in 2013. Tufiakwa Nigeria.

Revolution!

Revolution needs to take place from house to house whereby all contractors, civil servants and our politicians should be held responsible and accountable for their misdeed facing the consequences of the law for their corrupt practices. A situation whereby the masses will parade our streets home to home for interrogation about their sources of wealth and if found guilty they face the grieve of the masses. A situation whereby all activities will be shot down and corrupt politician should be jailed thereafter proper formulation of policies, law and sound judicial system to counter such future corrupt practice reoccurrence. In recent times we have seen some of the middle east countries where it was demonstrated.

Deri can you comment on the above write up

Deri and Doyin Okukpe will be very quick to state here that although the above write up is true, but it did not start with GEJ. Without asking the petinent questions in that extremly corrupt Aso Rock Villa. "Oga GEJ since your now the Man in charge, what are We going to do about these issues?". "Oga I think for a start, that you as a matter of urgency please declare your assessts so as to let Nigerians know that you are sincere about eradicating corruption". Then We can take it up from there.

Questions!!

Which nation will allow its church leaders to continue to swindle, cun and assault their teeming helpless followers in an hapless manner yet use the proceed to  buy jet or build school totally prohibitive to them due to their abject poverty.

Nigeria problem

I read this thought provoking piece of many questions which has been answered in some countries here in Africa. Where in the world their leaders careless about justice for the people? Libya. Where in world leaders loot the nation resources while the populace wallow in abject poverty?. Egypt. Where in the world some sections of the country weremore favored than the rest of the country leading to mass employment of youth.?. Tunisia
My people what happened in those countries? You know it. The people of those rose up and flush their incomptent rouges out of office. Why cant we do the same.? We always waiting for God to everything for us. We prayed more than Jesus and prophet Mohammed put together and what is the result-ZERO.
Folks until we rise to challenge these people , we continue to suffer, hungry, homeless and eventually die and go to hell for our inaction. Finish

it is the ethnic jingoist

it is the ethnic jingoist believing that everything must pass through their own worldview that is causing the limited sensible debate that we are having in Nigeria for tangible development even among the educated. Like..... oh the president must come from our senatorial district even if he is an highway robber.Let us stop the ethnic game.
On the highway I promised that I will buy corn from schoolgirls selling corn from any of them that can tell me the product of 7 by 7 none of them knew. If we do not let this children realize their potential they will continue to be a negative to Nigeria s wealth aggregates no matter which tribe they come from.Almajiri to Boko Haram to National poverty.

Questions Begged!!

A thought evoking piece by any measure. People that catch themselves having any care for the land that they call Nigeria need to ponder these questions posed by the author. Our Land is all that we have in this world other than our families, and right before our very eyes men & women who share the same descendants as us, are sacking and pillaging the Land out of greed and lack of patriotism, denying citizens the "fundamental rights of man". The Nigerian intelligentsia & the media carry a solemn duty to bear a burden in this epic fight(after all it cannot be said that the poor masses have not borne enough of the burden)by posing questions that goes to the matter:Whither Nigeria?". Posterity will note those that stood up for Nigeria when the hour was darkest. Is it is ironic that if with the author's brilliantly executed "discovery" interrogatories, quite a few men & women still bleed "green, white, green".

They've sold Nigeria for Peanuts!!

Nigeria and Nigerians, particularly those who make decisions for us are wicked. They are heartless. Just some tiny, unproductive rent seeking idiots steal us blind. The leadership is so bloody weak they surrender Nigeria's treasury to all the evil New World Order.... And we are mid-year without clear cut budget or policy direction.... Stupid country, controlled by hare-brained, stupid, irresponsible reckless bastards...!! God punish them all...

Nigeria's leadership, personified by Jonathan---with Bala Mohammed as corruption personified--- is stupid.
