Salute To The People’s General At 70 By Godwin Onyeacholem

By Godwin Onyeacholem

Providence, that intangible concept of extraordinary omnipresence, is invariably the ultimate intruder in human affairs. Moving stealthily with the practiced skill of a stalker, it habitually sneaks into the life of man and reconstructs it, giving it a new meaning for good or for ill. For General Muhammadu Buhari, it would have been out of the question to imagine that his eldest child, Zulaiha, would not be present as he marked the beginning of a momentous journey into the autumn of his life. But that, precisely, was what unquestionable providence had decreed.

Just a couple of weeks to clocking that majestic age of 70, Buhari lost his esteemed daughter to the grim reaper in a most harrowing fashion; thus bringing to a spontaneous end the hopes of a daughter who, in all likelihood, must have looked forward to a befitting ceremony and conceived a grand plan in honour of a worthy father. And for the father, it was a most devastating moment as it represented a brutal deflation of the expectations of having her eldest child be part of the joy of such a rare, crowning instance of glory. But a devoted Muslim that he is, the dogged Infantry General has put the unfortunate incident down as an act of God – once again an inevitable admission of total submission to the inexplicable feat of  providential effectuation. His choice, going by his spiritual inclination, could not have been different.

Yet, in spite of this incredible personal tragedy, Buhari has every reason to celebrate and move on. To attain the milestone of three scores and ten in a country whose average lifespan for men is 47 odd years, in spite of its status as one of the world’s top ten crude oil exporters, is a remarkable achievement. On this special occasion, one can’t but salute him and join his relatives, friends and associates, supporters and well-wishers in thanking the Almighty God for keeping him alive to see this moment.

A distinguished Nigerian who commanded several army units before, during and after the civil war and also served as state governor, federal commissioner and chairman of NNPC, the country’s oil corporation, as well as Head of State, this detribalised, unbigoted yet misunderstood son of Daura, Katsina state, surely has a date with history.

Having initially singled out himself as a leader with a largely commendable performance in a recurrent cycle of leaders without vision with which Nigeria is seemingly saddled, “mai gaskiya” (custodian of truth or rectitude), as he is widely known by his throng of supporters across the North, now feels compelled, and justifiably so, to continue from where he stopped.

In contrast to the political philosophy of “do-or-die” espoused by President Olusegun Obasanjo at the winding up of his second term, Buhari is an advocate of the politics of making the votes count and service to the people.

Since his inexcusable ouster on August 27, 1985, after just twenty months in office, the ship of state has continued to sink deeper and deeper in the morass of absolute bad governance. Not even General Sani Abacha’s regime could stop the simmering heat of discontent that had built up over the years. And before one could spell anarchy, providence, in its unsurpassed ubiquity, showed its perplexing hands and shunted the goggled one to pave the way for democracy.

After sitting on the sidelines to observe a first four years that hardly changed anything, Buhari, out of a gut feeling driven more by patriotism, selflessness and belief in acting for the good of others than any self-seeking consideration, threw his hat into the democratic ring, hoping to enlist the people’s mandate in pursuit of the high-minded objective of arresting what was apparently becoming an endless drift. Three times (twice under ANPP and once under CPC which he formed) he has attempted to secure the presidency; three times he has been deliberately denied by the ruling party’s manipulative machinery, which regrettably includes a combination of the electoral umpire, security agencies and the judiciary.

But this General still holds his head high. He has firmly refused to be defeated. Discussions are already in top gear on how to rev up the engine of his campaign for the 2015 elections. Never before has the momentum for change been so high, absorbing and definite. The level of disillusionment is now at its peak. At this critical juncture in his life, the acclaimed people’s General must make the last pitch for the presidency.

More than any other time in her history, Nigeria needs a leader to halt this relentless march to the brink. For the man called Buhari, whom both the conservative and progressive flanks of the South – and even in the North – also describe as “Mr. Integrity” for his honesty, directness and zero tolerance for corruption, the process of renewal has to begin in 2015 or never.

Many happy returns, General. May you live long enough for this country to eventually imbibe the values of your distinct style of leadership.

@OC: We're succeeding!

Don't be irredeemable!

I don't engage people. I engage LIES that are presented as FACTS.

You're lucky. They've COMPLETELY disengaged from DERI. What he now gets are abuses. Pray not to go that way.

Or do you think it's an achievement when your name begins to feature with his?

We're succeeding. At least you've left El-Rufai & Hannatu alone, & you'll think twice when handling the North through your dummy run, GMB.

I've learnt a thing though; that's to recheck even when tired

Happy Xm & NY.

I close with this! (2)

But one thing you are wrong about, is if you expect me to ever engage you again. You are such a distraction, like the rest of the other louts, and your cohorts. Imagine the 'air time' that I have wasted on you so far, yet, like the rest, you are irredeemable and a waste of space. I shall henceforth, ignore comments by you, as I presently do the other louts, for whom I apply the wisdom of Proverbs 26:4.

Finally, I close by referring you to Proverbs 26:4, which reads (depending on the version) "Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest one becomes just like him". In other words, it means, IGNORE A FOOL! I also take no fool for prisoners. Goodbye and enjoy a happier New Year!

I close with this!

For the first time, you are, indeed, right about one thing. I shall not relent in exposing the fraud that people are, with FACTS! I shall not relent from EXPOSING the MISCONCEPTION about the likes of GMB. You are right about that! I shall always stop any attempt to launder and whitewash BUHARI to an unsuspecting public. As for El-Rufai, he does not need me to say anything about him, as many are doing this already. Sadly, he was my hero, until he chose to follow an UNDEMOCRATIC element that SINGLE-HANDEDLY ENDED THE 2ND REPUBLIC. And thus obliterated every respect I had for him. For I cannot reconcile how any sane person and DEMOCRAT can support a COUP PLOTTER, USURPER, TYRANT and a DICTATOR. Although I thought he did well as FCT Minister, albeit, with some minor faults. That is my dilemma about him.

@OC: Putting on your old toga, hum!!

Will be repeated, and with pride.

Going about your usual stock-in-trade; trying to catch errors in order to shout down whoever disagrees with your crumb catching.

Is that all you can offer? When will you grow out of this? Who is your hero?

Now you'll begin your hibernation until the next Buhari or El-Rufai article; then you'll come out with your FALSE PREACHMENTS about DEMOCRACY and GOOD GOVERNANCE.

Enjoy the paid pittance, & DARE to show up during the next Buhari or El-Rufai article.

@OC: OC, you're not cut out for paid writing

You're not cut out for paid writing!

I am 100% sure your soul has some difficulty accepting this. You're forcing yourself.

A man of your intelligence couldn't stoop this low if he hasn't sold out

It's not too late. At least you can still hear the falconer. Deri's already gone. Don't follow suit.

The tragedy of negative "AS IF" schemes is that with time, you'll begin to believe all the racisms, phobias, doublespeaks, hatreds, & hypocrisies that you willingly got yourself into.

Very sad!!!

My final words, while I close!

My final words, while I draw the curtain, is to the writer of this eulogy or ode to his hero. I apologise for the dimension that this discourse has taken, which outcome, I guess, you did not contemplate. And that, is exactly the point I sought to make about REVOLUTION, that you cannot always predict its outcome. That it may even consume those that started it, and they may end up not achieving their objectives. Besides, REVOLUTION, may mean different things to different people.

I'm sure you now regret why you did not quietly or discreetly write a personal letter to your hero, instead of publishing this eulogy for the public. I suggest you begin your search for another hero, if heroising or hero worshiping is what you are about, as you can see that there is nothing great about him. Reference Prof Wole Soyinka's treatise about him. And if you are in search of ancient heros or heroine to worship, why not look in the direction of the Scriptures. There are fine examples there.

@OC: On GMB

You said our missions are different. They sure are. But mine does not include doublespeak and bearing false witness.

It's evident you, yourself don't believe these things you're spewing about GMB. And if you really do, there's nothing to describe them but hatred.

Or, is he a shroud to sttack the North?

@OC: On literacy

My dictionary defines literacy as, "The abilty to read and write"

It's the creek(est) illiteracy of the highest order to call Northerners illiterates.

Your definition of literacy means ONLY Western education.

With a little reserch, you'll discover that the Northerners are for 900 yrs literate before the coming of Europeans to the creeks.

How soon you even forgot that the 'educated' creek(ers) couldn't face the illiterates in a Presidential debate.

High time Quata System Democracy is scrapped.

@OC: Argue with OBJ, not me!!

Nig's is all WHAT DEMOCTACY IS NOT:

QUOTA/FED XTER DEMOCRACY brought GEJ

POLITICS of RELIGION

Unequal level playing field

Tanks taking over SQUARES during protests

Lootocracy

SHARING OF OIL MONEY

Rigged elections (95%, 99%, 99.63% declared)

etc.

This Ebito echoed democracy is the refuge of the laziest, the most corrupt, the convicted, & the uneducated to retard the social & intell. dev. of humans.

If that's what you call democracy, I would rather a boy-boy in Hitler's Germany.

@OC: You saying OBJ couldn't define REVOLUTION?

Pope's IS NOT A REPUDIATION OF DEMOCRACY, but a call to good governance & a caution stubborn apologists.

So, it's not an exclusion, but a rejection of any FORM (incl. its Nign subvariants - kleptocracy, slavery, & Ebitocracy) that's not serving the people.

How could you subsribe to an ideology & at the same time accept its antitheses. It's for this reason that some accuse you of being a direct benificiary of what obtains.

Your ideas may seem progressive but are actually a shroud for the status quo.

@Shaka dZulu - How cheap, to allude that I am 'paid'!

Maybe ex-President Shehu Shagari, whose MANDATE and Government the ARMED robber, GMB, FORCEFULLY SEIZED and USURPED, paid me. (But come to think of it, GMB/IBB had such GUTS to THWART THE MANDATES and the VOTES FREELY GIVEN BY NIGERIANS TO SHAGARI & MKO).

Maybe I was also paid for advocating that ALL INSTITUTIONS of GOVERNMENT, from the POLICE, PRESIDENCY, CUSTOMS, IMMIGRATION, EFCC, LOCAL GOVERNMENTS, STATE GOVERNMENTS, MDAs, to the JUDICIARY, MUST begin to FUNCTION properly and EFFECTIVELY.

Yes, maybe I was paid the sum of your State's entire 2013 budget, if that makes you happy! And do you wish to know the $ exchange rate or how much? Go figure!

@Shaka dZulu - Maybe I hate what GMB represents!

And maybe you are right that I have a pathological hatred for GMB. And for very good reasons too! Maybe I hate him for the right reasons. Yes, I hate him because he used ARMS to SEIZE POWER and USURPED a MANDATE FREELY GIVEN to PRESIDENT SHAGARI (a Northerner) by MAJORITY of the NIGERIAN PEOPLE. I hate him for delaying our DEMOCRATIC JOURNEY and STUNTING its GROWTH by almost 2 DECADES! I hate him for DECREES 2 & 4. I hate him for being corrupt Abacha's man Friday. I hate him for his stance on SHARIA and for being an ETHNIC CHAUVINIST (similar to a RACIST)! (BTW, I can't stand RACISTS).

Most of all, I hate him for his VIOLENCE, and INCITEMENT TO VIOLENCE and always calling for BLOOD, BLOOD SOAKED DOGS & BABOONS! Or, do you not think I have good reasons to hate him?

You lack understanding of the meaning of REVOLUTION! (6)

REVOLUTION is not about sitting down to decide how to share OIL MONEY or decide which RELIGION SHOULD BE ADOPTED AS STATE RELIGION or how to SHARE POSITIONS. REVOLUTION is also not about shouting 'CORRUPTION', 'CORRUPTION', without PROOF. It is also not about gathering in a SQUARE for no reason! The Arab Spring (REVOLUTION) was about DEMOCRACY, and not about ALL FORMS OF GOVERNMENT!

Moving on, the only sensible thing really worth responding to about your rant, is your innuendo about being 'paid' or rant about having a pathological 'hatred' for GMB. I 'hated' GMB, yet I commiserated when he lost his family member recently. I 'hated' GMB, and yet I wished him a happy birthday, but suggested he uses the time to reflect. I do not hate people, but may hate what they represent!

You lack understanding of the meaning of REVOLUTION! (5)

The REVOLUTION I need is where the POLICE will not need prompting from either the President or Governor (whosoever is the occupant) whether or not to arrest a criminal (including Buhari and other Coup plotters). Where the Judiciary is independent and impartial (and does not engage in clandestine phone calls with a party to an action).

A real REVOLUTION would ask the LOCAL GOVTS what they have been doing with the billions of RESOURCES/TAXES that they have been collecting. It will ask the Commissioners of Education, especially in the NORTH why there is TOO MUCH ILLITERACY. And it will ask the Commissioners of HEALTH in the NORTH why there is so much DISEASES and POVERTY, especially IN THE NORTH.

You lack understanding of the meaning of REVOLUTION! (4)

People in GOVERNMENT did not drop from heaven, but came from among you and I. The REVOLUTION must begin with you and I, FIRST. It should start with you being efficient in your work before you can improve INSTITUTIONS or others. Going to work early (no excuses about traffic), working your full hours, and working diligently. Only when you are properly REFORMED or REVOLUTIONISED, can you then go on to REFORM SYSTEMS or INSTITUTIONS or cause CHANGE.

You lack understanding of the meaning of REVOLUTION! (3)

REVOLUTION should start from the inside of every Nigerian. It should begin from the inside of people manning INSTITUTIONS and SYSTEMS. It should start with you being, firstly, REFORMED, and not accepting ALL FORMS OF GOVERNMENT, but accepting ALL the norms and values of DEMOCRACY.

REVOLUTION should begin with you not being CORRUPT or giving or taking BRIBE! Seeking JUSTICE for those INDICTED of corruption, like Farouk Lawan, Ndume, Kalu, Odili, just like Bode George, Ex-IGP Tafa, Ibori, etc. Seeking a level playing field for all!

You lack understanding of the meaning of REVOLUTION! (2)

And be careful what you ask for or wish, as there is no knowing or telling the dimension the REVOLUTION you seek would go. Just like a war, you cannot always predict the outcome, otherwise, Hitler's rule (yet another FORM OF GOVERNMENT, going by your relic and primordial postulation) would be with us till today. Ghadafi also did not predict the outcome of the REVOLUTION. I cannot guarantee that the REVOLUTION that you seek or contemplate would include you in Nigeria. I'm sure you can deduce my meaning unless you are as worse as that 'Agbero' and sawdust-brain, and are bereft of deductive reasoning.

The REVOLUTION that Nigerians need right now is EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES OR MERITOCRACY, as opposed to Quota system or Federal Character. A REVOLUTION, where ALL SYSTEMS (INSTITUTIONS) work EFFICIENTLY, from the POLICE, CUSTOMS, IMMIGRATION, to the JUDICIARY, LOCAL GOVTS, STATES AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS.

You lack understanding of the meaning of REVOLUTION!

I struggled hard to resist or fought back the urge to respond to your rants, including your UNBELIEF IN DEMOCRACY, and acceptance or MISBELIEF of ALL FORMS OF GOVERNMENT, which makes me to query what you are about, and why you even query the seeming practice of democracy that the country currently embraced? In the end I yielded, once again, to the wisdom of Proverbs 26:5.

I cannot believe how an UNDEMOCRATIC element like you (a good example of your mentor), can talk about REVOLUTION, when you need a REVOLUTION to bring you to MODERN times, and stop you recycling antiquated and premordial doctrines and principles. The sort that the Arab Spring was about. The sort that did not accept ALL FORMS OF GOVERNMENT, BUT DEMOCRACY. The sort that respects the votes of the people and the majority.

What you need, foremost, is a REVOLUTION of the mind that accepts ALL OTHER FORMS as aberrations.

@OC: What the Ebiti psephologist knows & didn't tell Nigns

On GMB, there's nothing wrong with his or any Rtd soldier's credentials. What you're advocating is criminal & unconstitutional.

GMB's case resembles that of Abe Lincoln. Lincoln was a soldier; in active politics from 1832-1865; lost credible (not Ebiti) elections 8 times; & only succeeded on the 9th attempt.

This ends to all your prayers. If you, OC, were a 19th Century AmerIcan, you would've decimated this hero to a point he wouldn't even be a footnote in American history.

Not a good thing to do!!

@OC: FOOLS contest FORM

You're either paid to do this, or you've a pathological hatred of GMB

The struggle is not about him. It's about restating your mission, detesting the anarchy & retaking the soul of Nig.

Your soul cries to join the mass. So jettison these impostors.

When they say crumb catcher, they're only surprised that you're depending the indefensible.

Democracy is not absolute Or was it a stubborn deja vu with Alexander Pope saying, "For forms of govt let fools contest, whatever is best administered is best"

OC: This is slavery

This is no democracy OC; this is kleptocracy.

The same argument used by the Crown to deny the colonies their independence is what you're using to deny a Nign citizen his constitutional right.

Patrick Henry's response to the King's reps applies to you.

"Give me liberty, or give me death"
"If this be treason, make the most of it"

You're misrepresenting Nig., Nigns, & Democracy

We only hope you'll show up to depend this Ebitocracy, even as the REVOLUTION predicted by the Oga's Oga nears Egypt.

@Shaka dZulu - Reference Proverbs 26:4 -5! (8)

That is also my advice to all the other Coup Plotters nursing similar ambition to become President of Nigeria. I will rather vote for an idiot than vote a criminal that should be serving LIFE Jail term for treason. After all, what is the difference between Buhari/IBB/Abacha and Vatsa/Gideon Orka? Or the difference between them and ARMED robbers? Their acts are not far apart. A common factor or denominator is that they wielded and used ARMS to FORCEFULLY dispossess or 'take over'!

Treason is treason, whether successfully executed or not. The fact that their treasonable acts and sedition was successful does not change the fact that they committed sedition against a state and an elected Government. A murderer or a thief is not less a murderer or a thief, because he is escaping JUSTICE for the time being. Their day and time will surely come!

@Shaka dZulu - Reference Proverbs 26:4 -5! (7)

My final advice to you and other image launderers or 'follow-follows' of the illiterate and crass dictator, is that he cannot reap democracy, when he did not sow into democracy, but, in fact, killed or destroyed our democracy, and set us back almost 20 years (1983-1999). As Majek Fashek once sang, you don't expect to sow Yam (anti-democracy or topple an elected Government) and reap (or harvest) Cassava (democracy).

You reap whatever you sow, the Bible teaches. He who sows against, or stunted democracy cannot reap or benefit from democracy. Basic law of nature and of God.

@Shaka dZulu - Reference Proverbs 26:4 -5! (5)

And coming back to the issues you raised (after the distraction), Buhari must have engaged very lousy and incompetent Lawyers, and he should sue them to return the fees he paid, if they were unable to utilise the 'full-proof' or 'water-tight' EVIDENCE in your possession or that you have just made references to, to establish electoral fraud. Or, perhaps, you failed him by not providing his Legal team with these 'water-tight' EVIDENCE.

As far as I can remember, Buhari challenged the 2011 elections results all the way to the Supreme Court and failed, which was the final nail in the coffin, especially after he ignored the advice of the whole world that advised that the elections were substantially FREE and FAIR. A fool always thinks he is right in his own eyes, while everyone else is wrong.

@Shaka dZulu - Reference Proverbs 26:4 -5! (4)

And rather than pull down, we can aid the President through CONSTRUCTIVE ADVICE to preside successfully. And if this view or my position makes me a 'crumb-catcher', or whatever you call it, then the wisdom of Proverbs 26:4 is in order for you.

Also, if the 'perceived' failure of the incumbent President, according to the 'no-do-gooders' or non-achievers, is the reason why relics and ancient men of the past, like Buhari, are being laundered for recycling (when others that have also tried and failed in advanced countries have retired and moved on to rest), then I apply the wisdom of Proverbs 26:5, which enjoins me to answer a fool according to his folly, lest he thinks he is wise.

@Shaka dZulu - Reference Proverbs 26:4 -5! (3)

Our missions and motives on this forum are definitely different. My motive is not to launder anybody's image. (I don't know about you). My mission is to contribute towards social-engineering and reform mindsets. It also includes recognising that governance requires everybody to also play their part, including advise the Government CONSTRUCTIVELY, while recognising that governance is not as easy as buying and selling oranges or apples on the streets.

No institution or school trains any person to become President or bequeaths experience of President on anybody. Presidents learn on the job, albeit, certain skills-sets help when one becomes a President. And no one person has ALL THE KNOWLEDGE. It is the recognition of this that Presidents and PMs throughout the world have ADVISERS to assist them. Nigeria is not an exception.

@Shaka dZulu - Reference Proverbs 26:4 -5! (2)

(Contd) Or when he refers to you as a 'crumb-catcher', even though you live in far away UK, then verse 4 is definitely pertinent, and the fool deserves a golden silence. Unless, of course, he knows how much 'crumbs' you collect and he is prepared to defend it with FACTS!

Proverbs 26:4 tells me to ignore the fool, or answer him not according to his folly, lest I also become like him. And as I don't take prisoners of fools or suffer fools or ignoramuses lightly, silence is the best answer to the fool.

And if that, to you, is indicative of being cowed, then you are definitely a basket case, as well, and a dime a dozen with them.

@Shaka dZulu - Reference Proverbs 26:4 -5! (1)

If you must know, my responses to certain comments are usually guided by the above two verses. When appropriate I apply the wisdom of verse 4, and at other times (like this occasion), I apply the wisdom of verse 5. I thought you were a teeny-weeny bit better than the two louts you mentioned, but have proven otherwise.

FYI, I don't do gutter or fight inside one, unlike the louts you mentioned. And I also refuse to be distracted by detractors. When a person describes another or his profession as 'fake' simply because he did not, according to him, 'cite a statutory section or provision', even though unnecessary and irrelevant, then the wisdom of verse 4 is appropos. Or, when he describes your family, your house, your work, your job, without any knowledge of you, begs questions of the mindset of that person. It portends insanity or a delusional mind, if you ask me! (Contd)

@OC: Questions Nigeria owes the snail-speeding Ijapa

Who is your hero?

Can an amateur subliminal marketer tell a TRUE story?

Did your 'venerable' Soyinka not work under IBB?

As IBB's man Friday is he then a clean slate?

Was 50% turnout above the nat. av. in the SE/SS not a fraud?

Is it not Hmm when a ward in CR with 6,031 votes transformed into 377,517?

Was it not a fabrication when Bayelsa & Anambra returned 99.63% & 99% votes to PDP?

Obama's margin of victory is 2.3%, & ours is 26.91%: is this Ebiti you're comparing to US's & UK's?

@Abdulgafar, @T. DDaji: Keep the good work!

@OC resorts to checking spellings as if he's a colonial Engl. teacher or the Queen's grandchild whenever he's clueless.

He's called "a crumb catcher & a fake lawyer" by @Tundemash, & "a masquerade, the fickle minded scrawler" by @O. Ezeanyika.

These 2 he fears like his grave - sometimes he imagines Abacha (who made him run into a hole) telling them to keep a close tabs on him

Write in Xhosa lang. if you like; we're understanding you

Don't let oil-induced Ebiti militant discourage or shut you up.
