We have seen all of this before: an election, followed by a challenge of the result in the court of law.

 We have seen all of this before:  a legal process that runs all the way up to the Supreme Court, ending in a predictable result.

We have seen all of this before:  that legal challenge consuming so much time that by the time it is concluded, the country is getting ready for new elections.

We have seen all of this before: the decision of the judiciary shredded by controversy as we have two “winners”: the moral victor side by side with the winner at the judiciary, who is normally the same as the electoral commission’s declared winner.

Since 2003, the claimant of the moral victory in the presidential election has consistently been one man: General Muhammadu Buhari.  For three straight elections, in two different parties, he has lost to the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), “winning” 32 per cent of the presidential vote in 2003, 18 per cent in 2007, and 31 percent in 2011.

Buhari is currently in court once again, trying to get the judiciary to intervene in an election that was flawed.  That is his right, but I now invite him to do something far more important and beneficial to Nigeria than winning an election or an appeal: to do something in-between elections.

Let us go back a little bit.  As was the case in 1999 and 2003, Nigeria’s opposition parties spent a considerable amount of time in mourning, following the 2007 elections.

They screamed on our television sets.  They wept on the streets.  They vowed that at the next election—in 2011—they would defeat the PDP.

Well, the 2011 elections are over, and the PDP is still in control.   The PDP certainly manipulated the election in clever ways, but the opposition did not really present a challenge.   The reason that the PDP can claim not only that it won, but that it did so in a free and fair contest, is that there was no opposition solid enough to take advantage of its duplicity.

And the reason for that is that we seem to see politics in Nigeria only in terms of the frantic few weeks before the elections.  Nigeria’s political life should not be reduced to an attempt to defeat the PDP, unless—like the PDP—your only interest is power, not service.

And even if politics was simply about defeating the PDP, somebody must invest greater imagination and commitment to ensuring such feasibility, so that such a transition does not simply mean transferring the asylum to a different bunch of inmates.

This is where I call upon General Buhari by name, because the problem with our elections is the content of our concern in between elections.

In between our elections, sadly, two sets of betrayals creep into our national life: the winners ignore the responsibility of office in favour of what Professor Richard Joseph has called prebendalism, while the losers creep into their shell, counting the days to the next election.

Think about it: on Animal Farm in between our elections, you do not hear many winners talking about electoral promises they have fulfilled.  That is often because they are too busy at the buffet table.

And you do not hear much from the opposition animals much, either.  That is often because they have their injured paws in their mouths as they glare menacingly at the greedy winners.

You do not hear them talking about party organization, or of activity aimed at boosting the party’s image or membership.  You do not hear about new party offices or officials at the grassroots as a party tries to extend its reach and enhance its profile.  You do not hear about engagement with other parties to explore cooperation opportunities.  You do not hear about party leaders making appearances in areas where they did badly in the previous election in a determined effort to improve that party’s fortunes there.

You do not hear of emerging stars of a party on the basis of their accomplishments.  And certainly, you do not hear about inter-party discussions of possible mergers or collective candidacies. That is treated as an unimportant issue until the next election is hours away and even the blind beggar at the street corner can see such cooperation as the only way to victory.

One reason why this happens is that many party chieftains d not really care if they ever win an election.  They simply want to play our “Big Man” game and maintain sufficient fidelity to the law to remain registered.  That way, they can enjoy the benefits of being recognized as being important, thereby enjoying a direct line not only to the electoral commission, but also to whomever wins.
This nonsense has to stop.  I urge General Buhari, to whose presidential ambition I offered my unsolicited support last March, to lead the charge.

I say this in the assumption that he will not be running for office in 2015.  If this is correct, I must make another: that he would like to see Nigerian politics boosted by an opposition that is strong and national enough to present a real challenge in the future.

If these assumptions are fair, General Buhari must come out of hiding and lead the way.  Being either a candidate at an election or a challenger at the tribunal is not enough.  Nigeria is not short of men and women who want to be called President; what she is short is men and women who want to serve.

Think about it: after two terms in 1999 and 2003, President Olusegun Obasanjo wanted an illegal one in 2007.  Ibrahim Babangida, after the political distress he engineered in 1985, sought the presidency in 2003, 2007 and 2011 (withdrawing at some stage each time).  Buhari himself has sought the leadership of the country in 2003, 2007 and 2011.

Our presidency should not be the retirement home of former military generals.  As I have observed elsewhere, it is a shame that each of these men gives the impression they are all that Nigeria has, and that they know no younger people who are patriotic, passionate and capable.

This is where Buhari can make a genuine difference: by helping to develop a vibrant and patriotic political opposition, and a new concept of leadership:  community and institutional drivers who are willing to get their hands dirty in order to empower the ordinary Nigerian.  What we need are leaders who can lead progress in such fields as education, agriculture and political participation without the prospects of personal gain.

Nigeria needs leaders who use government hospitals and clinics in order to ensure they are actually fit for ordinary people who can afford no better.

Let us have leaders who can identify with, and rally popular causes that will benefit and nurture Nigerian talent.

Let us have leaders who, outside government, can lead the offensive against mediocrity, corruption, indolence, poverty.  Let us have men who are big enough to provide opportunities for poor children without feeling they are doing this country a favour.

I do not know what happens in the National Council of States when our former leaders come out of their stone palaces and sit at a table for no better reason than that each of them once ruled this country.  That table is, and will remain an aggregate of failure until one of them can stand up, look into the eyes of the others and tell them they are the laughing stock of the developing world.  Nigeria has no other problem than at that table.

Buhari has a good chance to make a genuine contribution towards distinguishing himself, repairing his image and helping this country to move forward, but unless he is willing to be the one who publicly challenges his fellow former tyrants, he should not expect History to remember him with greater kindness than any of them.

Solana have spoken well. Nigeria needs an active opposition. But we must understand one thing about Buhari, the man is not a typical politician. You don't expect him to behave like one. He is honest, trustworthy and with very few words. He does not have stolen resources to finance a vibrant opposition.

Let us leave Buhari alone, the man is an honourable man that has never been found wanting. He has served Nigeria and Nigerians well as an Head of State and Chairman of PTF.

All the Buhari bashing will not save Nigeria from the downward thread Nigeria is going because of the cluesslessness of President Jonathan.

I'm a true Nigerian from the South South and my allegiance is to Buhari, a man from North Western Nigeria. I've never met him yet I love him and ready to follow his guide whenever he offers it.

How many of you (Buhari haters) can sincerely say this about anybody, including GEJ? Stop hating Buhari and go get a life.

Buhari will cleanse this insecurity & corruption

The uneducated educated Nigerians are easy to manupulate. For now what Nigeria need is a Radical Reformer to cleanse this system collapse. Will there be a Nigeria by 2015?
The signs are there, PDP has failed the nation. Many many questions Where is Ribadu? what role did he play for PDP? GEJ is just the weakest man SS will produce at this time.
Nigerians should be thinking 20yrs ahead and benchmark against other democracies.
A Buhari (Likes) are what we need for now not that drunken and weak - GEJ and his occult PDP.

@Koni -

Before Jonathans emergence I formed my views. I stated facts and you call it ignorance without stating any educated position. Who then is the ignorant one? Frankly, Buhari tarnished our image in the free thinking world, the reason they didnt respect us and treated us like animals as Buhari did. Besides WAI which had selective application, what else did he do? Nothing in the absolute! No new roads, no new hospitals, no new industries, no new diplomatic gains, just shut down media houses, higher unemployment, enormous brain drain and national character degradation. With the authority he had, if he could not do anything, there is only one conclusion I can come to, that he was clueless about leading a nation and visionless. He just wanted power and every nigerian to reason like the men in khaki or like abused cows in an indian rice plantation. Please read the analysis from OC for your personal education. It is good to be educated; I dont just mean dy/dx or integral calculus.

WHY EXPOSE YOUR IGNORANCE..@Azibaola

wake up, keep sentiments and hersey away. face the truth and tell it instead of spreading meaningless unfounded lies that only expose your ignorance!!

@Sonala - In the Final Analyses and In Conclusion...!

GENERAL BUHARI is an opportunist, and he is not fit for purpose, either now or in the future. He belongs to Nigeria's ugly relic and past, and should remain there. He has no SOUND Economic policy to give or proffer for the future, or even the present, of the country. Even with the Boko Haram menace, as a former Head of State and so-called 'statesman' or former 'leader' he cannot proffer any solutions, and he does not even attend the Council of State meetings for him to do so! Not that he can contribute anything meaningful!

BUHARI cannot lead the opposition or guide anybody to 2015. He can only guide people to nowhere. Follow him at your own peril!

@Sonala - BUHARI's UGLY LEGACIES - 3!

Still quoting Wikipedia - "[7] His government sentenced popular musician and political critic Fela Kuti to ten years in prison on charges that Amnesty International denounced as fabricated and politically motivated;[8] Kuti was later pardoned and released by Buhari's successor.[9] In another high-profile incident that sparked a diplomatic incident with Britain, British officials found Buhari's former transportation minister drugged in a crate marked for shipment to Lagos.[10]
According to the BBC, "Buhari's attempts to re-balance public finances by curbing imports led to many job losses and the closure of businesses."[11] These losses were accompanied by a rise in prices and a decline in living standards."

@Sonala - BUHARI's UGLY LEGACIES - 2!

According to Wikipedia - "BUHARI initiated a public campaign against indiscipline known as "War Against Indiscipline" (WAI). Aspects of this campaign included public humiliation of civil servants who arrived late for work whilst guards were armed with whips to ensure orderly queues at bus stops.[5]

He also moved to silence critics of his administration, passing decrees curbing press freedoms and allowing for opponents to be detained up to three months without formal charges.[6] He also banned strikes and lockouts by workers[6] and founded Nigeria's first secret police force, the National Security Organization."

@Sonala - BUHARI's UGLY LEGACIES!

Talking about BUHARI - the only 'achievement' which his disciples point at is the forced WHIPPING of Nigerians with 'Koboko', in the name of DISCIPLINE. What became of this Jackboot style of his? Was it sustainable? Are Nigerians now more disciplined since his introduction of the FORCED DISCIPLINE? A good leader leaves behind LASTING legacies!

Another legacy was his primitive ECONOMIC POLICY of forcing and whipping people to sell their OWN Goods and ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES at below THEIR Cost price. Yet his Govt did not SUBSIDISE THE COST OF THE GOODS! For more on the crimes of BUHARI, see this link: http://saharareporters.com/news-page/crimes-buhari-wole-soyinka. BUHARI BELONGS TO OUR UGLY PAST!

@tundemash - Stick to the issue!

Only a babe would see a mountain and say it's easy to climb up to the top. Or, would say it's easy to reach the North pole. Unless you have headed a multi-departmental office or multiple offices before, would you truly appreciate what management or governance truly is about. Unless you have also managed a diverse and multi-racial or ethnic people before, would you truly appreciate leadership and the skills required. Hence when seeking management positions abroad, you are asked to demonstrate your experience of the above issues I have raised.

And unless you have a full understanding of managing a Local Govt, would you fully appreciate what managing a State and a country made up of about 36 States with hundreds of Local Govts is about. 4 months or 9 months is not enough! That is why it is 4 years for a reason. In a small office, it can take up to 1 year to fully learn the ropes! BTW, THE TOPIC IS NOT ABOUT GEJ, BUT THE ROAD TO 2015 AND THE ROLE BUHARI AND OTHERS MUST PLAY NOW!

Leadership!

Leadership is not about self, but about the people. Christ, as leader, was humble, even to the extent of washing the feet of his disciples. A leader should also have a succession plan, and plan for or groom who to take over. JESUS APPOINTED APOSTLES.

But of course, BUHARI, the political prostitute (who like ATIKU hops from one party to another) is no leader. Politics or leadership, for them, is all about SELF. I disagree with SONALA that BUHARI has ever won an election, and would ever win one. HE KILLED DEMOCRACY, AND AS THE LAW OF KARMA GOES, HE CANNOT BENEFIT FROM IT. But he can groom or support a successor. Nigeria needs an OPPOSITION, but a CREDIBLE one. The road to 2015 should start now!

Good call, Sonala!

Sonala more or less, echoed what I have always said about Nigerian politicians or so-called 'Statesmen'. They are only in it for their selfish reasons. You only hear of their names, IBB, BUHARI, ATIKU during ELECTIONS TIME. Once the occasion is over, that is it! THEY RETIRE TO THEIR HOUSES UNTIL THE NEXT ROUND. During times of NATIONAL CRISIS they are no where to be found or they are always found wanting!

Yar'Adua was AWOL for months, BUHARI, IBB & co were found wanting. It took GOWON, SHAGARI, OBJ & CO to move the country forward. BUHARI & IBB do not attend COUNCIL OF STATES MEETINGS, YET THEY DRAW PENSIONS FROM THE GOVT. They are also found wanting at State functions! They are silent on Boko Haram!

@tundenash - What!

Who is this Deri? It would be nice having a chat with him because if he is not like you or scares you, there must be something constructive I can learn from him. You must be scared of him like Buhari, but this time for his acumen and not his koboko. "I DEY LAUGH". Tunde or Suleiman or whatever your real name is, would you now let me go look for this Deri to have a constructive engagement on how well Jonathan is doing and how we can throw our collective energy behind Mr President? Sorry, I meant behind David, the killer of Goliath!

@tundenash - What!

Given up on Buhari and now looking for an escape? Jonathan was not the issue but Buhari. listing Jonathan's achhevements in Bayelsa is irrelevant.You wont understand because your understanding of good leadership is koboko. A good indicator is the fact that Bayelsans who know his achievements didnt complain about him in office or out of office as governor. Not so with many others. In line with my beliefs, he has so far proved to be all inclusive unlike Buhari. All knowing Tundenash, GJ never declared he made all that money as governor. Where did you read that and why are you so misleading. I now find no point teaching you because you lack substance and have been all over like a headless chicken. I must now spend my time on something better? hmmm?

@zibaola Ukueje alias Deri: Just one achievement is what we need

In about 12 posts now , you still can't mention just ONE achievement of Jonathan when he was deputy gov or gov in Bayelsa state. Just ONE achievement !!!. U claim he spent 9 months as gov. Is 9 months too small to achieve anything but yet he was able to declare "modestly" N800m as assets he acquired during the period.

No point in discussing with you. You have got nothing to offer analytically other than the usual north/south , xtian/muslim divide

@tundenash - What!

You referred to GJ as the worse of the SS. This is an unfortunate position for you because he beat your recommended best from the north. By the way, GJ is not the worse from the SS and Buhari far from the best from the north. Not even good enough compared to many I see up north. By the way, buhari is used to flogging people to do things and lacks greatly in diplomacy or interpersonal skills unlike Obasanjo and would have failed woefully in dealing with a civil law making chamber. I am not about north and south. I have been fortunate enough to live in every part of the country and love the Hausa man for his ethics. At the national stage however, I believe the best should take the podium. Nigerians chose their best and Buhari was not. More than 65% of Nigerians cant be wrong about what they want especially when the figures cut deeply into all the regions and religeons.

@tundenash - What!

Listen intelligently and you’ll hear him well. In saying ‘Not a General’, he meant ‘Not a dictator’ but ‘diplomat or manager of civil resource’. Remember Zombie by Fela. The biggest armies have diplomats as their c in c and have confidence in them as is with Jonathan. Buhari was the giant at the elections. Jonathan was the smaller one. Who won. The smaller one. 2nd proof as David. Atiku the philistine was 1st proof . He’s now on the enormous task of rebuilding our foundation and says I will conquer again as David. Many are troubled by his vision because if achieved will put them deeper in the dark side of history for non performance, one reason for Boko Haram, for GJ not succeed at reaching his goals. Donald duke served for 8 years but Goodluck for 9 months as governor and was not liked as deputy by the corrupt Alams boys because of his moral and constructive position. In that period he was acknowledged as one of the best. Baba knew why he supported his election.

Real Issue is absence of Opposition Politics

Unfortunately most commentators have missed the point being made by the writer and turned this debate into a Jonathan versus Buhari one.
I am neither a fan of Jonathan nor Buhari
The issue we should focus on is the absence of real opposition politics in the country, especially as the writer points out, during the period in-between electiions
There is no continuing critique of government policies and programmes, no sensitization of the populacem, no extension or solidification of party structures.
This explains why the opposition keeps recycling spent forces who have little or nothing to offer but their dubious credibility. It also explains why politicians can very easily cross from one party to the other because they stand for nothing or than a platform for grabbing power

mr monkey, who told you GEJ

mr monkey, who told you GEJ won outstandingly in the South? INEC? i guess you must be high on something! in delta state for example, the fact that the CPC had no agent on ground and the man representing the ACN (omo-agege) was actually a PDP man led to mass rigging. it was agreed by all party on ground, mid-way through the election to thump print the left over ballot papers for PDP. PDP actually won in the south, but not with the margin presented by INEC.

Azibaola Ukueje time will tell who was right

Chief Awolowo was the best in his time hence Obasanjo the then Head of State said the best man may not win, the same Obasanjo said the 2007 elections was do or die and hence through rigging and instrumentality of the judiciary installed Late Yaradua.Obasanjo again in 2010 started the naked dance of no zoning to install Jonathan against the party arrangement hence the feeling in the North that written agreement was being shamelessly denied by the South this helped to ignite the post election violence in the North.I disagree with you that Jonathan was the best in the 2011 election, General Buhari stands far taller than Jonathan in experience,integirty,honesty and purpose ,infact it is an insult to compare General Buhari with Jonathan .Time will tell if Jonathan and PDP will not end up as disgrace to those who voted/manipulation the elections.

THANK YOU TUNDEMASH

AS A CORE NORTHERNER I CANT SAY ANYTHING IN FAVOUR OF BUHARI BECAUSE IT WILL SOUND IMMODEST, BUT I AM HAPPY FOR NIGERIA THAT IRRESPECTIVE OF ETHNICITY AND RELIGION PEOPLE ARE GENERALLY ABLE TO SEE AND RECOGNIZE QUALITY IN ALL NIGERIANS. THE SITUATION IN NIGERIA HAS PASSED A JOKING MATTER, IF WE CANT RECOGNIZE THOSE WHO PERFORMED THEN LET US HELP THOSE WHO ARE LEADING NOW IN ALL WAYS POSSIBLE TO START TO FIX OUR PROBLEMS. THANK YOU TUNDEMASH FOR THE DEFENSE OF HONOUR AND JUSTICE, THANKS FOR BRINGING FACTS AND FIGURES TO BEAR IN THE ARGUMENT, THANKS FOR ENLIGHTENING ALL OF US.

Re: Buhari is bitter history

@Azibaola Ukueje
Buhari is history so why is he still an issue ? Why still discuss him ? Because Jonathan is clueless . A C-in-C who claims he's no General and expects the troops to ve confidence in him. He claims not to be a Goliath but we also know he's no David; he's just an ordinary Jo. Even if Presidency is zoned to SS within PDP, must it be the worst of the SS? Can a Jonathan match Donald Duke in terms of achievement and clarity of purpose ? No wonder he dodged election debates. With your almost 10 submissions here, you can't mention just ONE achievement of Jonathan when he was deputy gov or gov in Bayelsa state. Instead the response is always either he's christian or from minority; is that enough attributes ? Awo is now a standard and yet when he was alive, Awo was the traitor who betrayed Biafra. Everything sounds very Derish , i wont be surprised Azibaola Ukueje is another of Deri's alias ; no objectivity, every query is answered with ethnic or religious sentiment .

@ Awojobi - Error

It is injustice to Awolowo for him to be put at par or compared with Buhari. Not in same school talkless of same class and Jonathan was by a mile a better candidate at the election, a fact. Mind you, a lot of muslims voted for Jonathan. Did they vote for him because he is christian? No. By the way, there is nothing wrong with giving a south south man the opportunity to become President if qualified in the interest of fairness.

@tundenash - Buhari is bitter history

You miss it again. Imagine the character who cleared Buhari. Atiku? Billionaire without industry. What was your expectation. Shagari was listed as very corrupt yet you left him in house arrest and “kidnapped” Diko, a junior thief at a huge national cost for what? Make a public show to justify an unjust democratic murder? Personal grudge, hmmm? Different judgement for similar criminals? Terrible quality of a leader! You mentioned Balarabe, about the most decent of the generation. On what evidence was he locked by the power drunk scout master. It was proved he committed no crimes like many others who were locked up unjustly. Poor judgement for a man who wants to rule Nigeria. Jonathan made promises but did not say he will fulfil them in one year. Even if, he won’t be the first including Blair, Clinton, Bush, Sarkozy & Mandela. Look, Buhari is history. Get used to it and stop arguing like an educated illiterate assuming you are educated. As for Atiku’s clearance, “I DEY LAUGH”

Is Nigeria fulfilling destiny or what?

@shaba you are right so right.I have discovered that any man or a good person who tries to do the right things always gets the knocks for that in Nigeria.The question is:Is Nigeria fulfilling her destiny?I mean many can't reason outside religious or ethnic lines!
@Awojobi Olakunle;you wrote something interesting...what can good stuff can be attributed to Mr Ibeibe from his deputy governor days till date.
Sometimes,i ask myself this question....it's a pity

IS NIGERIA CURSED GOD FORBID

People voted/manipulated for Jonathan for various reasons that were completely stupid and idiotic 1.Like he is a christian as if he is more than a mere church goer,
2.South south has the oil and they have not ruled before as if he is close to being the best from that part of Nigeria worse still their is nothing positive to attribute to him for his past 12 years in government as Deputy Governor,Governor ,Vice President ,acting President and President.
3 They closed their eyes to all the negative attachments to his name and that of his wife which he himself called beer parlour gossips.
BUHARI REMIANS THE BEST LIKE CHIEF AWOLOWO AMONG HIS CONTEMPORARIES THAT CONTESTED WITH HIM.GOD BLESS YOU SONALA FOR TELLING THE NATION THE TRUTH ONCE AGAIN GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

@Azibaola Ukueje: Was Umari Dikko a Niger deltan ?

U claim "You listed Shagari who was head of government. Buhari only put him in house arrest and stifled the life of those who comparably stole little or nothing more. They did not have Fulani names?"

Was Umari Dikko a Niger Deltan ? Was Balarabe Musa a Niger Deltan? Think before you spit out your garbage.

U claim "24 suite cases published as containing hard currencies".
I thought that had been thrashed out already with Atiku who was Customs boss clarifying that matter but since you guys have nothing else to cling on, u need to keep repeating that hoping it would stick somehow.
You still conveniently bypass Jonathan's promises each time; guess what , like the truth it wont go away . This is the link again , if truly u deal with facts, deal with this ...
http://saharareporters.com/column/non-governing-governance-3-4-mountain-...

@Tundenash - Please be futuristic

You amuse me. Your understanding of corruption is myopic; funds in foreign banks? You listed Shagari who was head of government. Buhari only put him in house arrest and stifled the life of those who comparably stole little or nothing more. They did not have Fulani names? I stated published facts you cant morally dispute. You have not challenged them. I remind you again; 24 suite cases published as containing hard currencies, lives he barbarically sniffed out of young Nigerians by backdating his god-some law, company he kept including all you listed as corrupt which by inclusive mapping tells me he was like them in some form. If he had a functioning moral compass, good enough not to see himself as God or answerable to the people he claimed to want to teach discipline, why did he not declare the content as everyone else did as the law stipulated. Its no secret he is widely viewed as sectarian, divisive and tribalistic. Get used to facts and stop thinking like an alimageri
