Perennial Massacre in Nigeria: An Appeal from the International Society for Human Rights

In the early hours of Sunday, March 7th 2010, a band of Muslim-Fulani herdsmen, believed to have come from the neighbouring Bauchi State, crept upon the villages of Dogon Nahawa, Ratsat and Zot Foron, located about 15 kilometres south of the State capital Jos; as they slept, and in a three-hour uninterrupted orgy of violence, massacred more than 500 Christian men, women and children of the Berom tribe. Many of the victims were butchered with machetes. Many were burnt beyond recognition, while many others died of gunshot wounds and asphyxiation when the houses in which they were sleeping were set on fire by this marauding band.

Dogo Nahauwa

It appears that we have not heard the last about the ethnic conflict in Jos and its environs. Last Sunday morning the world woke up to the consternation of an attack in some villages which were engulfed by the conflict when it recently broke out again last February. Jos: The Greatest Horror!

In Nigeria today, one of the new vocabularies used by all and sundry is the language ‘Jos Crisis.’ I have wondered why it is usually called ‘crisis’ each time it breaks out. The truth is that there is a WAR in Jos since September 7, 2001 that has defied solutions till today March 7, 2010. Early in the morning today, the worst dehumanization in the world history took place here in the city of Jos again in a small community called Dogo-Nahawa, near Rayfield. Rayfield is more of a privileged community of the elites and the well-to-dos but Dogo-Nahawa is a very low income community.
