How MTN Scammed Me

By Victor Olapojoye

On the 24th of February 2010, I went into Bodlinks Ltd, an MTN dealer located at Ring Road in Ibadan, purchased the MTN monthly internet bundle and paid the sum of N10,000 for the service. The reference number for the transaction is 0180930475.
However, to my surprise the service became erratic after two days and stopped working on the fourth day. I was on a business-related to Lagos, as such, I could not immediately report this apparent anomally personally to Bodlinks MTN.

On the 3rd of March, I went to the Bodlinks MTN Office to report the situation. I must confess that the reception I received was purely abysmal. The Office Manager, Bode Obube was not in, but one of the staff in the office, named Patience put me on the phone with him. Bode basically blamed for what happened. He said I was required to activate the service, and since I did not activate the service, I basically burned N10,000 in four days! And that there is absolutely nothing he can do about it. I now asked him a very simple question. Why would a service that requires activation work without it being activated? Another question I asked him is why I wasn’t prompted to activate the service.

I also asked him if he would pay N10,000 for four days of internet use. As usual, he could not answer these questions. All he could do was to basically blame me for what happened. What Bode Obube obviously thought is because I can afford to pay N10,000 for internet service, I could afford to forget about what happened and pay another N10,000. But, he got it wrong, I will not let anyone, not even MTN take away my hard earned money. After I got off the phone, an office staff named Patience took my name and contact phone and promised to get back to me the following day for a possible resolution. It is now over a week, and I have not heard from Bodlinks MTN. This goes a long way to show the culture at MTN.

I am going to ask MTN the same question I asked Bode Obube. Why would a service that requires activation work without being activated? Would anyone at MTN, even your Executives pay N10,000 for four days of internet use? And why would the system not prompt a customer to activate the service? The simple reason is MTN thinks Nigerians are fools. These are the Nigerians that bailed MTN out. MTN, prior to its entry into Nigeria was an unknown telecoms company. Is this how you repay Nigerians? By scamming us because MTN believes Nigerians won’t complain or we just basically don’t know our rights? I believe the NCC should take note of this, and require that for all services requiring activation, telecoms operators must insert commands into their products that would prompt customers to activate such. Anything short of this, is a scam. It is very instructive to note that I took an informal survey of close relatives and acquaintances that are or were MTN customers, and what I heard confirmed that MTN is all about noise, but very little or no customer service. Cases of customers who are still receiving bills from MTN for services they’ve discontinued, shoddy and non-responsive customer service, etc. I believe a class action law suit should be filed against MTN for all their excesses, and the process should and will start very soon.

I am by this note asking MTN to refund the N10,000 I paid for the purported monthly internet bundle that turned out to be a scam. I have being an MTN customer since 2008, and at this point no longer interested in anything MTN. The only reason I will keep my MTN phone is because it has been my only number in Nigeria since 2008.

In ending, I will want to state that I took every step possible to resolve this issue through Bodlinks MTN, but after waiting two weeks, and being denied the use of convenient internet service I paid for, I had to other option than to expose it to the whole world.

GOOD PR FOR MTN

That is a good and commendable PR for MTN. I wish Arik air could consult you for PR

mtn u ppl shld wake up i subscribed fr d bb thinky for like 5days now and its still nt workin all they keep tellin me is dey re sorry nd they wld transfer to deir engineers...tired of all dat

This happened to me twice with MTN. Customer service was useless, the office in abuja was worse. I cant understand why that fraudulent pay as you go is the default option. Anyway the second time it happened I bought starcomms and have never looked back. Every one in my house 4- have dumped the MTN sticks. Though fast at times its too irregular and customer care for the internet end is BS.

Why should someone go and subscribe for MTN Internet service at all?As for me i have tasted the bitter side of MTN and most especially Zain,Zain in even the worst compare to MTN.And right now as i am writing this i use Multi link 3G Broadband services and i assure you i have been smiling everyday.I would advice any sane person that want to enjoy good internet service to use Multi link or rather Sarcoms and Visafone they are cheap and very fast.A trail will convince you.To Hell with Zain and MTN

I am responding to your complaints about MTN service and the very bitter experience you had at Bodlinks?? Just like you, I got my MTN fastlink connected some months ago and went through hell with the service: no need to repeat the obvious story. The interesting thing is that I kept calling the customer care line (180) and complaining about what I was going through. Then, the last day of my access came and I got the surprise of my life. A certain senior executive at MTN called me on my phone, gave me a long apology and, you better believe this, reloaded my N10,000 credit. I browsed for the next month on this compensation credit and amazingly did not get any network problems at all. The lady that spoke to me told me that on that very day she was calling me, she had approved over 150 such compensations. SHe also said they could see from their monitoring systems that I indeed did not enjoy what I had paid for. I was transformed from a vicious critic of MTN to an apostle.

its now obvious and unbearable. i am currently experiencing the same problem with the so called useless mtn. please let's trumpet this to the whole world. this is extortionate!

Mtn is a thief they charge me 5000 since 1 week now for my blackberry and am still unable to browse.. dnt you think this is unfair and Bad.. 08033187659

i sympathise with you.several people have been complaining bitterly about MTN and their internet services.mine's different,i've called customer service several times, complaining that for weeks now,MTN has been taking my remaining balance each night to leave me with N0.00 every morning.it's not funny!this's hard earned money for crying out loud.my question is,how do we sue these stupid opportunists and thieves?i have no apologies for my language.

On Fraud By MTN; Urged on by mtn sms xtraconnect promo, mtn deduct N500 monthly from my account promising a low tariff regime plus free internet service 10pm-11pm and later 4.30am-529am. In the first experience, the entire N600 in my account was deducted between 10.05pm- 10.30pm. On inquiry at the mtn customer care desk, I was informed the free internet access is been changed to 4.30am- 5.29am. Once again the sum of N400 was fraudulently deducted from my account in 15minutes. Can someone stop this corprate fraud ?

Continuation:
So my dear, I syphatise with you on this. That is Nigeria where simple information is lacking. Go to MTN website, you will not find such information there. If you check Orange/T-Mobile/O2/Vodafone and all other UK service providers, you will find instructions on how to do this automatically. To the extent that each SIM activation on your mobile will autoamtivally installed essential services on your mobile.

The problem with MTN and other service provider is that they dont provide instructions on how to use their services. Secondly, the software should have prompt you on what to do and guide you through the process. My laptop was nearly damaged by MTN at Allen Avenue due to the datacard not installing the internet software on my laptop. I figured it out by copying the software to my laptop and install the software there first before the laptop could indentify their software. I went to their office to explain the situation and even write instruction manual for them. They declined my offer (big headed fool).

Mr. Ernest Ndukwe NCC gets a lot of bribe money each month from MTN, ZAIN, and the other service providers so why do you think he will punish them for bring him more money?

The NCC has made it impossible for true internet providers to operate in Nigeria by refusing to provide the license at affordable prices to Nigerian, but he is willing to make us slave and pay the high cost for his own greed.

If the NCC has been doing a good job, the telecoms problems we have in Nigeria would not have be. We are all aware that MTN is the worst telecoms provider in Nigeria. They are also the most expensive. We are also aware of how the company milked Nigerians in their 1st year of operation when they said per second billing was not possible. At that time, it happens that calls were disconnecting even when it was .05 seconds. They will charge for 1min.

is there a braodband internet in nija, how many megabyte is the speed,u hv all been scammed.there is no broadband internet in nigeria to my knowledge

We all know, there is no regulation in Nigeria and that's one of the key area NCC has failed to see........i must say you are at fault. i was once a victim but it is better you understand a package before going into it. MTN have fliers and they are not to be blamed for your money. but my own point is why should we Nigerians be denied what we should have. Telecoms operator are not investing on internet compared to voice. the little they have is rather too expensive. why are they afraid of running at loss, due to internet availability to all Nigerians at a cheaper rate. We have been reaped enough by MTN. they are not ready to give back to our society. perhaps its a south african firm who does nothing than reap Nigerians of their money and take it to their own country. it is only Nigeria that an investor makes more than capital within few months or years. let NCC request for telecoms operator plan within the next 5years before giving them license.

@voice of unreason. I guess you must be one of the animals we have in Nigeria. As in, why would you go and maim someone and destroy his business because of N10,000 dispute?

I am sorry for the loss of your 10k and Bodlink is to blame for this because they should have activated you. For MTN, you can't blame them because by default MTN has activated every line for internet at some rate. You might just need it to do some quick internet stuff without the need for a contract. So this is a good feature not irresponsibility on their part. Like someone said, report them directly to MTN and you COULD be compensated.

Olusegun, you needed to have texted 101 to 181 to enjoy the MTN broadband service for 30 days. That's what the activation is. You would have then received an SMS confirming same. Since you did not "activate", MTN simply billed you the regular 15 kobo per kilobyte (which is VERY HIGH) and so you burned up your N10,000 in a few days.

Bodlinks' fault here is, they should have activated MTN 24/7 bundle for you themselves or specifically instructed you on how to do it. They shouldn't have assumed that you had the knowledge simply because you paid N10,000. I reckon they were more interested in your moolah.

I subscribed for MTN 24/7 bundle at an MTN outlet in Lagos and the lady did everything for me as if I was a novice. :-) I just smiled and allowed her so I am not responsible in case anything went wrong.

I doubt if MTN would do anything to get you your N10,000 back.

I shared my experience with using MTN NG mobile broadband here:
http://www.mobileafrica.net/2681.htm

It is not only Mth i had a experience with a bank i wrote a cheque for the hotel i stayed in lagos. despite having enough to cover the cheque and having writen a cheque to the same hotel before the cheque was returned unpaid, i was charged for the return of the cheque and also despite the bank having all my phone numbers to contact me as they usually do when i write chequesin this case they didnt but i am at the moment with customer service I dont just want my money back I want compensation we are negotiating and so should you

As usual, nothing will happen at and to MTN. With the executives at NCC on their payroll monthly no one will lift a finger! I had a similar experience. In my case i was told i had dowmloaded more than required 3 days into a 30 days package! All i do is check my mails. Download what? The annoying thing is the response from their 181 operator. ''Well sorry there is nothing i can do" she said, and just hung up. Any wonder why there is no Nigerian company doing anything repoutable in South Africa? But here they are at the commanding heights of our economy. Our leaders seem to have another definition for patriotism, as they do everything else.

I was a subscriber to MTN internet service 3years ago via their SHARKPOD which was so erratic. After several calls and visits to MTN offices I have to drop the service with the attitude of those people who behaved as mini-god over my hard earned money. My brother, I share your view and hope one day we will get value for our money if only the regulators will do their work to call these people especially MTN to order.s

It is really sad that Nigeria has become a dumping ground for companies like MTN who basically come to Nigeria not to do genuine business and play by the rules but to come and rip people off. What they have done to you Mr. Olapojoye is not unique to MTN's internet services but also done to millions of customers in voice services - they over- charge subscribers by rounding off seconds into minutes.
In your case, whereas it would seem that it is Bodlinks (an MTN authorize dealer) that have done you wrong by collecting your money, however, it is MTN that has provided a fraudulent service afterall their switch did accept your transaction initially. This whole nonsense has to stop. NCC has no teeth and cannot fight for us.

Internet service provision by MTN et al is in its infancy and their system is not yet foolproof.
I feel for you.
But what happened is you as a subscriber are automatically on a pay as you go internet package by default. Your usage is billed against your credit balance.
If you want to go to an advertised package, you need to migrate from the default PAYG.
What happened was that you were not adequately informed.
MTN et al has a share of the blame but there also is the principle of caveat emptor.

Well, I think you should direct your complaint to MTN. its really bad that things are not properly done well in this country and people take advantage of the ignorance of Nigerians. If MTN fails to do anything about ur case, then take it directly to NCC and if nothing is done, charge them to court and claim damages, time lost, business frustration and emotional trauma. Lets start doing things the right way. Join the Save the Nigerian Group!

Have had similar experience. I loaded #500 on my fast track but to mine surprise d internet stop working. I later called d customer service & d only response was dat d money has gone since I didnt activate d desired package. Then I ask d same question you raised: why should d service that requires activation start working without activation or a warning instruction? MTN is a Fraud & Cheat. This is just a modernise Scam. Hope tn dump this network soon.

In as much as i wont disagree with you that telecoms service in Nigeria is poor, Bodlinks is probably one of the hundreds of MTN services Reseller who are not schooled and skilled in the services they are re-marketing. I urge you to contact MTN customer service directly which you haven't judging from your naration. Infact, Bodlinks might really get into trouble with MTN if you get to report this mater to MTN directly. Check their website for their contact.

do what I do,take a club and calmly walk into Bodelink MTN and thoroughly destroy equipment and maim anyone that stands in your way. they will quickly give you your money. nigeria is a jungle and animals reside here. it dosent matter whether the company is south african or nigerian. they all see you as a sucker and a bitch who can be gang rapped and you wont complain. the nigerian banks where fighting amongst themselves who would fuck you the most and you didnt complain. save for sanusi, they would have brought in dildo's and tools to do anal penitration without vaseline and you wont still complain. so shut up and shot somebody and you will get your money.
