Lagos Drivers Licence Fraud

By Johnson Kolawole

The fraud going on in the Ikoyi(Sura) office of the Drivers License is gradually turning to a hydra headed monster.

I applied for a drivers license on the 4th of June 2010 and the fraud started from the application.

I was asked to pay N5000  as the application fee and when i checked the receipt given to me all I saw was a N3040  written on it.

On inquiry I was told that everybody pays and so should make no fuss. I complained to no avail.Next stage was for them to direct me to the VIO office tucked a good 1km away in the streets of Lagos for an eye test.I went there for the test and on getting there was also given a form by the tester.Next thing I know he marked all the relevant sections as being passed by me and told me the test is over and that I should just drop ''something'' for coke. When I insisted on the test he said there was no light to conduct the test after which I gave him a 100 naira. On getting back to the License office I was told by some of my fellow applicants that I should not have gone but would have tipped the Road safety officials in charge at the photograph capture point.

My photograph was captured that very day and up till now 1st of September 2010(good three months) I have been going to the Office every week for the License only for them to tell me it's not ready.

I have it on good authority that if you pay extra your license comes out faster and to make matters worse the officials at the office have suddenly created a toll at the gate for drivers to pay before they can park their cars on the premise. All they do is tell you that it(toll) was created by the Lagos state government.I pity myself and a whole lot of other Lagosians that are being good citizens by going to the office to do the right thing.I could have given some money to a tout and ''pronto'' a license would have been given to me the next day.I wonder where these license come out from since they at the license office claim these are fakes but fake as they are I could still present them in banks for my transactions, police check point and other legal documentation without no hassles.

It's a pity that despite the the mindset of some good Nigerians to do the right thing and make a better nation some unscrupulous elements are hell bent on turning the nation into a jungle where anything goes.

Johnson Kolawole - Good Nigerian

Tafawa Balewite@"If anybody has any idea or plan on how my demise can help move the country forward, please, post same and articulate without "stammering" how to get it done".

Yes! I do.
How about a suicide bombing mission to the Senate and House of Reps, for starters?. And in fact, you can count on my support as well as my company. Serious

It is the same everywhere!

Hadly can you get to any office to do legitimate business, without heating an illegitimate rod. They will always call it money for coke.

But my brother, N500 x 2000 people. No be N1,000,000.00 be that. Which bottle of coke is sold for 1m?. And they get this withing minutes.

We can all see how we are loosing trillions to these faceless and shameless officers.

Another police officers in the offices.

Shame to all you idiots that would not want Nigeria to move forward.

they are not required

they are not required basically you are buying it, even a blind man can get a license in nigeria just a bit more cash

KAI,no one is talking about

KAI,no one is talking about driving test being conducted to confirm if the applicant can drive.
we really are in trouble

More Churches, more courrupt People

My sincere question now is where are these people taking this bribe from? Are they not the same people groomed by the new generation churches whom encouraged and asked them to sow more seeds? They have to steal from any angle in order to sow more seeds. When the preachers and Islamic teaches tell them that bribe is bad, the country will be free from these non-sense. Lets start from the religious angle this time around.

National Fraud Indeed

I am sorry Mr Kolawole, but nowhere in your write-up have I seen any references to the main test. Is it just about being able to afford the cost of the Licence?

Additionally, I could see that this process, which issues you an identity document does not in anyway reference a check on your identity anywhere.

Did you cut these out of the writing or are they not required?

I also notice that people are allowed to present a photocopied version (at Police Checkpoints) in lieu of the original; How does this help to check fraud or stop a banned driver from taking to the wheels.

Somebody help me ooooooo!!!!!!!!

Drivers Licence

Go to FRSC office at OPIC Plaza after berger busstop and have your drivers registration done and collected on the spot within 30minutes to 1hrs

Which way Nigeria?

Its corruption everywhere! God help us

Where are we Heading to?

Fellow Nigerians, I ask this question again, where are we heading to?

For God sake this story left me thinking about the future of this country of ours. It is unbelievable that all these are taking place and no one seems to be bordered anymore... Na dis we go dey dey?

It's great time we change attitude. I really do not know how we could educate our people who do not see corruption as a vice anymore.
PLEASE PAPA GOD HELP US!!!

I am feeling this writter! I

I am feeling this writter! I got my license same day I applied. I got to the FRSC headquarters in ojodu-berger and was "advised" at the cost of 1000 Naira not to bother applying at that centre/office as it might take several months to process. Instead,I was taken to another FRSC office less than 2km from the ojodu office but attached to OGUN STATE. The officer that took me to the ogun state command told me it will cost 5,000 and that I will get it within a week. But after been captured, I noticed that those that were captured at about the same time with me were been given their licences immediately. On enquiry, I was told that I needed to pay an extra 2,000 if I wanted to get it that same day. There and then, I requested for my receipt of payment and when they brought a recipt for 3040,I refused to accept it insisting that they gave me a receipt for 5000 as that was what I paid. We argued for about 30mins and I decided to play a smart one on their dumb brains. I wrote some of their names on a jotter, used my fone to take a snap of the payment notice pasted on the wall of the office. My trick worked because as I was about entering the car, one of them came running that their oga wanted to see me. I went back to tjeir office and 10 mins later, my license surfaced

All is fraud!

I think Babatunde Fashola's government is encouraging Fraud and Lawlessness in its greatest level. Check every sector from LASTMA, LASAA, VIO, KAI and so on. All uniformed thieves and hyper agent of corruption. I wonder the kind of legacy he is going to bequet to legosians by the time he leaves offfice.

In the name of revenue mobilisation the governor has commercialised every amenities. I wonder what our tax money is doing then since he will go out and bill us even more for enjoying his so called dividend of democraczy!

It Happened to My wife

My wife went to the same office to renew her license and received same treatment. As for her she paid N4,000 because someone introduced her to the officer in charge. However, at the eye test center, she paid N500 without test as there was no light as usual. This happened last week. I hope she we get her license soon.

As someone suggested, it is very easy to sterm out this corruption if the people in charge are sincere. Send some trusted CID with marked notes to the office and some people will serve as scape goats. Thereafter the cry of the culprit will be that it is the devil, we are not well paid and on time but we have to survive with our family. Sometimes you feel pity for some of the people because their salary cannot survice one person-family, but they have a family of at least 6 persons. This however is not an excuse to commit illegalities.

Is Anyone in Charge here.

Drop "something" for coke. hahahahehe. and this is in Fashola's Lagos Satate. Unbelievable!

Same experience as Johnson Kolawole

I paid the same N5000 (five thousand Naira) but received invoice of N3040 plus other costs for photocopying. i queried why the receipt did not reflect what I paid but was fogged off with no explanation. I became a victim of Lagos state officials and regreted that decision. I was only given a Cover Note and not driving license which I tried to renew. The office was in shambles with files all over the floor. I doubt how anyone can find anything.

Nigeria is a country were honesty simple does not pay. I wish I patronised the Touts. I cannot understand why someone with a full UK license cannot use it in Nigeria. I am simply sick and tired of paying for a new license anytime am in Naija despite driving for over twenty five years.

I have been told that Lagos State has issues with the Federal government with respect to Driving Licenses. FGN want to centrally issue licenses but Lagos state sees it as a means of generating income thereby creating confusion for all.

Fraud

The whole country is FRAUD why singling out only this parastatal please!

Fashola can do better

The chief executive officer of Lagos state can use some CID or EFCC officials to nab these culprit if he is so sincere in his campaign to sanitize the state.

Lagos Drivers Licence Fraud

Johnson Kolawole - Good Nigerian

If we can get a 100 people like you, we would have gone a long way in turning the country around.

Alas, everybody is a hurry going nowhere and nobody ( well - most Nigerians ) likes to be made a sacrificial lamb.

You can't have a plate of omelet without breaking at least an egg. The country cannot move forward without collateral damage. What we've lacked are willing committed people ready to sacrifice their lives for the country to move forward.

For the records, if my death ( in whatever form ) can bring some form of sanity to the country - I am more than willing to sacrifice it.

If anybody has any idea or plan on how my demise can help move the country forward, please, post same and articulate without "stammering" how to get it done.

Who is the Culprit?

In every society, there are always the bad heads; they will continue to reap innocent people off their hard earn resources frustrating the process of change our nation is looking up to until the leaders (FRSC, VIO & MVAA) saddle with responsibility in the processing of license enlighten the populace on the different stages involve, how long it will take and how much it cost...this will empower the public; except the leaders feed on the returns from their subordinates that perpetrate this unwholesome practices. Nigerians deserve a more transparent, fair, decentralized and courtesy license processing as this holds important information about an individual and could lead to security threat if the custodian of our information are not trustworthy... God bless Nigeria

This is why they are not recognize overseas?

This is why and how we shot ourselves on the foot. And who are we to blame? Colonialism? All the time, colonialism. No, we are the cause. Imagine, no country in the West recognizes a Nigerian license whereas a license from Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso and even Ghana are recognized. It this not a shame? And who says Nigeria is not a failed state? Imagine that you need a police record from Nigeria? what do you do? You just bribe the Nigerian police. They dont even verify or check whether you are a criminal or not... these are markers of a failed state.

I completely aligned with the

I completely aligned with the writer of the above letter. My driver licence is not out 3 months after I did the capture that same Sura, its a tug of war when ever an I.D is require in my bank. Imagine how much the officials are raking from the public N1,960 on each applicant multiply that by an average of 100 applicants per day!.No wonder the officials are figuratively and literarily feeding fat.The same officials too will rail against bad governance forgetting that they are part and parcel of why Nigeria is in a permanent state of comatose

@ Kayode Adesiyan

On the books what you said is the standard operation but they are only not following the laid down rules. If only these existing rules are enforced, Nigeria will be a place to write home about. This is what happens when corruption is institutionalized.

All Driver Licences must be withdrawn

Driver Licences in Nigeria are not valid, but licences to kill others. Withdraw them all now and mandate all would be driver to get trained within 3 years and the Government would have created a Driving School industry capable of employing thousands of people - http://www.searchnigeria.net.

Nigeria is a nation of fraud

Only fraudulent activities are permitted in Nigeria. These days i dont bother myself much.
