The Undue And Unhealthy Influence Of China On Nigeria's Economy
Whilst Nigeria continues to seek ways and means of developing its economy and tap into its natural resources, I think the country is in danger of being overwhelmed with the undue influence of China's presence in Nigeria. China, an emerging economic power in the new age, is known for its ability to produce and manufacture goods at low costs when compared to developed economies in the West.
Subsequently in the light of the more rigorous controls on importation of fake and inferior quality goods in developed economies, China has had to look towards Africa for dumping its cheap goods. Nigeria today suffers from the importation of cheap and inferior goods from China such as sub-standard syringes, a medical device. India too was implicated in the outcry by the then Director of NAFDAC, Prof. Dora Akunyili during her tenure, in the dumping of this sub standard medical device. Zambia today is overwhelmed with cheap textiles from China, which has led to the collapse of their domestic and homegrown textile industry. I predict very confidently that Nigeria textile industry is soon to go the same way if it hasn't already gone!
Balogun market in Lagos today is awash with cheap and inferior goods made in China but sold at cheap prices. Don't even talk about Alaba market.
Nigeria is signing trade and development pacts with China and even oil exploration or the building oil refineries in Nigeria. The recent oil spillage accident in China bears evidence to the quality of Chinese expertise in this field! Nigeria should be very wary with whom we go to bed in the name of economic development. It is China today. Would it be North Korea tomorrow in the name of 'technical assistance' for nuclear power as energy source for electricity or even Iran? In our zeal for inward investments Nigeria should be cautious and not be bamboozled into submitting its economic integrity into the hands of trade and development partners out to dump their goods on Nigeria. China is notorious for the production of fake and cheap goods and its about time our people wizened up. Equal partnership borne out of mutual respect is what Nigeria deserves and not one where our corrupt politicians, most of whom are intellectually inept in these matters, sell out the country for their own cheap personal gains. Our one time international airline industry was dominated by foreign partners who ripped-off Nigerians with not so much as a whimper from the relevant government department - a case of ineptitude on the part of government official and/or corrupt and contemptible humans being who by sheer bad luck of the gene pool happen to be Nigerians. I hope our people do not get too distracted with the politics of You Chop-I Chop and the sheer bloody hassle of trying to survive the daily life and existence in the country not to notice our local industries being ripped apart by China's cheap junk. There is nothing worse than being shafted in your own backyard by foreigners from far-flung lands taking you for mugu. This rallying call should not be mistaken or confused with xenophobia but rather a need for our people, Nigerians, to be vigilant in the face of the deluge of cheap crap from China flooding our markets. The cheap crap made in China that you bought today for a very low price will fall to pieces in less time than it takes for a more superior product from more established renowned brands. Whatever the heck happened to our local textiles industry.
We should not allow China and indeed other countries of same economic ilk and their propensity for dumping cheap and fake goods to have undue influence in Nigeria. Quality and not quantity is what Nigeria deserves.

Don't blame China
China is not responsible for the woes of Nigeria. The corrupt leadership, inept government and a cinical ignorant mass are jointly responsible.
Nigeria has great potential in terms of people and natural resouces. Nigeria should be well placed to negotiate development on equal terms with any interested partners from any part of the world regardless of political persuation.
The ball is in the court of Nigerians to mature quickly in all aspect of growth so the country can take advantage of the opportunities available to grow the country in a positive way that would benefit all it's citizens.
Nigeria goverment shoul be
Nigeria goverment shoul be very, very, carefull in dealling with china, they will destroy our economy, and also our money is not safe. They will start to print our money right from their country cause their very expert in doing this. Custom shoul be very vigilant to make sure they inspect every container from china very well cause of fake Nairas, this is just a warning to the goverment.
We pay the price as a country
We pay the price as a country because we fail to be proud of ourselves and what we are. I remember back in my secondary school days, my Igbo friends will come to school with their Aba made "opanka" sandals, they were light and very durable although not so beautiful yet people will deride the shoes calling them Aba-made. When these boys spoke Igbo people said they were "igbotic" yet myself and other yorubas spoke yoruba and no one said we were "yorubatic". During the biafran war, igbos designed their refineries, ran local jets and bombers, guns, weapons etc but after the war in a bid to shut the igbo down there was this notion of anything igbo is igbotic. Today, there are car assembly plants in igbo land yet people will say they are igbotic. Why can't governemnt develop such ingenuity to mamke them world class. Today people buy Nike shoes forgetting that the first set of Nike shoes were hand made with rough skins. The westernization of nigeria sure started from we yorubas whose craze for "jandon", designers etc see us deride nigerian goods not withstanding that we cannot produce anything
Good article. Nigeria should
Good article. Nigeria should ask all African countries where China is currently controlling their economies, you will find out their local industries have collapsed. China rakes everything to their country and leaves the poor African nations more impoverished. They build substandard bridges, houses, roads and dump all their goods rejected by western nations in Africa. Upon that, they bring in their own labours! At the end of the day the people gain nothing.Nigeria is toying with the destruction of her economy. Go and ask South Africa how they deal with issues like this. That is the only economy in Africa that sift the wheat from shaft. But the rest are catching the deceptive baits of China.
see that the Chinese
see that the Chinese propaganda ministry keeps tabs on this forum.
At least learn to structure your sentences correctly. and Musa Zula doesn't sound very Nigerian (if you're going to be ripping us off at least make an effort).
That being said, can we really blame the chinese? they are one of history's truly pragmatic peoples. We get shafted by them because they can do it and get away with it. When we draw the line and stick to it, they'll adjust accordingly. Nigeria is in its present state because of Nigerians (with not so little help from "friends").
Here is how the Chinese is helping Nigeria, inni't?
NDLEA nabs 2 Chinese, others with N4bn cocaine!

Its time for us to kick the
Its time for us to kick the Chinese out. They dont give-they steal and will steal us dry. They got oil blocks allocated to them by OBJ, with d promise of building new rail lines for us-we are still waiting almost 6yrs after they got the oil blocks. If Nigeria wants to develop, we must go through europe and the USA.Chinese products absolutely corrupts our very being. From drugs to kitchen knives.
Chinese are making nigeria
Chinese are making nigeria high devolemet.chinese teach nigeria how to walk out of the delay priod.fuel will be finshed . but knowleage will be continue for ever.
nigeria need to face your own problem. \
I want nigeria be stronger .
not only because the fuel but also because the people .
When there is Demand,Supply is usually met.The truth is the importers are asking for products that the percieved indegineous consumers can afford for a quick profit for them. This is the case( not China Govt. promoted dumping.)
China does manufacture most products sold all around the World now but all you have to do is that your SPECIFICATIONS are complied with or else REJECT them. Should the Nigerian Govt. and Importers make this a standard national practice you will have goods comparable to any standards of manufacture in the world.
Thanks Adepoju, this is a clarion call for us as a nation to arise and stand for our right and wriggle the economy of this country from the hands of corrupt and wicked foreign taskmasters like china. All other former developing nations, India, Brazil, etc are now emerging developed economy. Why not nigeria??? We have the material resources, we have very good brains both at home and at diaspora, but unpatriotism, selfisness, greed - the root cause of corruption is the beseting sin of nigeria. Who will lead this nation out of the woods?????? GOD HELP US.
In as much as we are not blaming China for her exploits, Nigerian govt should be vigilant. I am personnally worried about the refineries to be built by China. China has no HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) programme, and where such exists, does not meet up with the International Oil and Gas Standard or ISO. Many products from China are fake. And trust the laxity of our product inspectors. We should not forget in a haste the Lead compound found in baby toys in the US, all made in China. Wonder what would happen if the US govt does not show concern like Nigeria. THREAD WITH CAUTION, 9ja.
CHINA HAS COME TO STAY AND WE MAY NOT BE THERE TO LICK OUR WOUNDS. THEY ARE DIRTY, WICKED AND DEVIOUS ECONOMICALLY. THEY PREFER THE MORE CORRUPT NATIONS TO DO THEIR EVILS.
THEY SURE WILL OVERUN OUR ECONOMY AND THE GENERATIONS TO COME WILL SUFFER FOR IT.
ADEPOJU THANKS FOR THE EXPOSE.
@Otiokpo & Ben Gee you guys are absolutely correct. Go through UK almost everything is made in China, North Korea, Japan or India. The standards are very high but in 9ja the so called businessmen ask for substandard products, the government accepts substandard products and the citizens are made to pay the price of standard products for substandard products. The substandard HP laptop i got in 9ja costs about N125,000.00 in 9ja a better one (made in China) costs about half the price in the UK. 9ja business men are killing the population and the government does nothing like EFCC!
This writer is highly uninformed about China. For the most part, China has been good to Africa. Africa started having a few successes when China re-emerged as a world power and has been countering wicked, western imperialism. Before then, we were completely under the yoke of western powers. And I mean wicked as in very cruel and wicked! They have been pillaging our resources and giving nothing back! History is our witness.
For your information, china has advanced hitech and low-tech know-hows. China is business oriented! So it's up to your rogue government to control their borders not china!!!
Nigeria is trying to compromise quality for development. China is noted for inferior quality of materials and they lack standard. There are some building materials imported to US that is hazardious to peoples health and China is under investigation. Though we may learn one or two things from China but Nigeria should set a standard and constitute a panel to inspect, and enforce the standard.
@ Ben Gee is so correct, the Chinese can build everything you need at the quality you need. Read up about the 3 gorges dam project, their high speed rail system, Chinese aviation parts suppliers (without Chinese suppliers the 787 dreamliner would have been delayed). The only problem with doing business with China is that, our corrupt leaders will take the full cost from our till and request for the cheapest product what do you expect?
we should blame ourselves for the collapse of the local industries. when ibo were manufacturing in Aba, i recall everybody saying ibo-made, Aba-made, even by those who can't make anything. Now, we even have to beg the chineese to construct our roads. Shame on all those who put down the loccally made goods then!
Dotun, you are writing as if you are not aware that the textile industry in Nigeria and most of Africa has since collapsed because of the counterfeiting of designs of local textile companies. The counterfeit textiles are then flooded into the local markets at very cheap prices.
When the local textile companies collapse they lay off workers and that contributes to unemployment in the land.
When the Dutch came into West Africa they inculcated our culture in the textile designs 'Hollandis' they manufacture. But China is noted for manufacturing 60% of counterfeit products of all sorts worldwide. Rather than use ingenuity, China will rather counterfeit.
China has destroyed the textile industry in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda etc. African leaders know what to do to stop them, that is, if the political will is there.
@Ben Gee, it 's true that one gets what he paid for, but I think the writer is right. If not coz of our goverment silliness, our infant and local industries need to be protected and eqiup coz much importation, expecially sub-standard ones does not do any good in any economy and overall standard of living. Selling substandard products is like stealing by tricks--coz it has a negative trade-off in the long-run. In summary I dont blame them, I blame Nigeria leaders who pally with them for their useless interest. China is even doing least economic harm to Nigeria when compare with Lebanese and India. Until the finish our resources they cant leave. shame to many leaders in Africa. Nothing shocks them!!
You get what you pay for. I talked to a knife maker in south China two years ago. He told me he make knives priced from 10 cents to over $ 100 each. It depend on what his customers want. He made knives using imported steel from Germany or Japan and he also make knives using local scrap. He gave me one of his knife as a gift. It is comparable to the best and most expensive German knife my mother bought.
