Our attention has been drawn to a circular dated December 15, 2009 wherein the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo ordered all married female officers accommodating their civilian husbands in the barracks to quit before the end of January 31, 2010. The reason adduced by the Inspector-General of Police was that “it is against African culture for a woman to house a man instead of the other way round”.
WELA (Women Empowerment and Legal Aid) condemns in strong terms this primitive, illegal, unconstitutional and highly discriminatory directive as it is at variance with the spirit and letter of the 1999 Constitution.
In the circumstances, WELA hereby demands a retraction of the said order without any further delay. If Mr. Onovo fails to withdraw the obnoxious directive WELA will not hesitate to challenge it at the Federal High Court.

... Where did Onovo started from? we should check his background properly. What kind of man was he when he was in NDLEA? He should be thinking of how to make life better for the avarage police officer and not ordering the woman police to abandon their husbands because that is what that statement is. |

... I think he must have realized that, that order was a really big mistake. Any right-thinking Nigerian will never think that way, not to talk of the number one man in charge of an outfit that is supposed to guarantee equality and freedom. His wife must be disappointed at his statement. Where in African history was it written that a woman cannot accommodate a man? or what historical fact can he use to back-up his claim. This is sheer discrimination against women (at its highest order). Does the IG mean to tell us now that a police woman must not marry? or she cannot stay in an official apartment because she is a woman and is married? I am a man, and I feel highly disappointed that such an utterance can come from a man that claims to be a well educated lawyer. Its a shame! |

... The man is a mad man.Does he think all men are as corrupt and empty as he is?I pity what he calls his wife, becos she must be a figurehead or a tyrant and he thinks depriving cooperative families of planning a life is a way of hitting back at loving women.MAD MAN.GOD PUNISH YOU FOR YOUR CORRUPTION |
