Achebe’s Immense Patriotism And Commitment to Better Nigeria Will Be ‘Greatly Missed,’ Says President Jonathan
Professor Chinua Achebe’s frank, truthful and fearless interventions in national affairs will be greatly missed in Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan said today in reaction to the writer’s death.
In a statement signed by his spokesman, Reuben Abati, the president said that while others may have disagreed with Prof. Achebe’s views, most Nigerians never doubted his immense patriotism and sincere commitment to the building of a greater, more united and prosperous nation that all Africans and the entire black race could be proud of.
“He recalls that with maturity and global stature, Prof. Achebe fearlessly spoke the truth as he saw it and became, as he advanced in age, a much revered national icon and conscience of the nation who will be eternally honoured for his contributions to national discourse as well as the immense fame and glory he brought to his fatherland,” the statement said.
Mr. Jonathan said he was consoled by the knowledge that Prof. Achebe will live forever in the hearts and minds of present and future generations through his great works which brought him enduring international fame and countless honours.
In November 2011, Prof. Achebe turned down Mr. Jonathan’s attempt to offer him the title of Commander of the Federal Republic. It was the second time in seven years he was rejecting the offer. In a statement, the respected writer explained that "the reasons for rejecting the offer when it was first made have not been addressed let alone solved.”
When he turned down the offer the first time, in 2004, he said he had been watching events in Nigeria “with alarm and dismay…particularly the chaos in my own state of Anambra where a small clique of renegades, openly boasting its connections in high places, seems determined to turn my homeland into a bankrupt and lawless fiefdom. I am appalled by the brazenness of this clique and the silence, if not connivance, of the Presidency."
He was at that time rebuffed by the Olusegun Obasanjo government, which responded that Achebe chose to turn down the offer, he did “not deserve” Nigeria.
Similarly, when he turned down the offer in 2011, President Jonathan called the refusal "a regrettable decision which may have been borne out of misinformation as to the true state of affairs in Nigeria,” and urged Prof. Achebe, who had been wheelchair-bound for two decades, to “visit home soon and see the progress being made by the Jonathan Administration for himself".
Achebe died today with most observes in agreement that in the hands of Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic Party governments since 1999, Nigeria has grown increasingly worse, and in the writer’s words, “too dangerous for silence.”

@wahala.....this is not a dictatorship
Whether u agree with Awogbeoba or not...what he wrote was accurate. Don't forget when Achebe wrote about awolowo, igbos said Yorubas are treating awolowo like god, that achebe did not mention yoruba as a tribe. that the truth must be told. Now you igbos cannot take your own medicine. Dele said what a number of ppl thought. You are not from Achebe's family. He did not attack igbos as a group. May be igbos will now be more sensitive about maligning heros of ther tribes because it is never nice to be on the receiving end!
"Ever at home in a world nurtured with his lies, it blossomed into his truth!"

Achebe lectured overseas and was never exiled. He sought medical attention where proximity to his base and the qualiity of attention would have been bestThis ur early morning greetings, are they a general broadcast
An invitation to visit Nigeria to see for himself, the steps which the Government was taking to better the country in the longrun should not be seen as deriding of his person but of respect and understanding of a good dispositon of government to critism. I hope we learn to stop twisting events just for the purpose ethnism.
@Dele Ewuotueba
Chinualumogu Anachebe the greatest Iroko tree ever, in our side of the woods has departed.
He died in exile out of choice and on principle with his faculties still intact.
He was righteous to Ana and it is now his turn to join the spirits.
Because of his righteousness, he was never forced or was it his chi, to take his own life.
May the spirits elect him to the rhelms of Ndichie and Ikenga.
Go well, Okeosisi!
In times like this ...
In times like this, the best thing to do is to be silent or quiet.

It strikes me differently when i 1st saw Awogbeoba's comment. But it strikes me harder when viewing counter-comment frm oleku and co. Saying all sorts of bun-kum about Yorubas. 2 knw what an average Yoruba is, one could see that a sizeable no of counter-comment comes frm Yoruba sons. But i think on average, pple frm other tribe have taken our gentility and accommodating spirit, as a weakness. Some idiots on this platform, fail to realize that, it is only possible 4 them to type shits in the name of comment, because a Yoruba man made it so or you fools think Sowore Omoyele is frm Bayelsa? One nincompoops was saying 60% of Lagos land was owned by the Igbos. I laugh @ ur gullibility. Though i dont pray it but, lets wait and see what will happen the day violent altercation ensue btwn both tribes. Ode!
@ SaharaReporters : re - Dele Awogbeoba ...Decorum Please !!!
@ SaharaReporters:
@ Dele Awogbeoba's post is ultra offensive and tells on your editor's inability to filther nasty and provocative comments from circulation. Did you guys not read his "tribute" before publishing it? You ought to be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves. What have you achieved by allowing such bitter words to be read by Prof. Achebe's family? Paid government goons multi-post abusive trash aimed at every dissenting view on your site, ethnic bigots run wild, and now this deranged sadist. There is absolutely no rationale for allowing @Dele Awogbeoba's comment and it should be pulled from circulation a.s.a.p. "Freedom of Speech" should end at your Editor's desk where it ought to be vetted for acceptable decorum in public discourse ...or, not so?
@ Dele Awogbeoba:
Chump, henceforth, I will be doing more than cursory reading of your comments. I will not revert now in deference to Prof. Achebe(+) but, your insolent "tribute" is noted.
Dele Awogbeoba is a Bastard
Dele Awogbeoba, you are a bastard. You are not a Yoruba bc Yorubas dont say evil about the dead. What Chinue Achebe has achieved cannot be achieved by your generation unborn. You Yorubas hate Ibos and still they have bought the whole of your land, today, 60% of lagos are owned by Ibos and there is nothing you can do about it.Borrow a life, you fool
This was the man that the
This was the man that the presidency threw a jab to that he is far away from happenings in Nigeria, so he does not understand the realities on ground in Nigeria during the subsidy protest. Yet, the president has the gut to talk of his patriotism when he passed away. It will be turn by turn
( don't mind the english ).
We will all pass on to the great beyond and let those that are alive now think and re-think especially nigerians
Troll.
@2Dele,the attention seeking troll,Looks like you have forgotten to take your trovan today....
@ Dele Awogbeoba, bad taste, you are not human
The Dele Awogbeoba below look very much like the style and tone of Reuben Abati in disguise. It is definitely from some media person working in Aso Rock. He wants to please not just Awo but Jonathan because Achebe refused to take honour from Jonathan.
Reuben Abati or whoever is disguising as Dele Awogbeoba should know that Jonathan will not be in Aso Rock beyond 2015 and Jonathan could even get rid of you anytime before this date for your treachery and green snake image.
Bad taste, I am sorry for you Jonathan sycophants in disguise of Awo worshippers.
THINGS FALL APART THE FULL VERSION
THINGS FALL APART RELOADED
By William Butler Yeats ( Adopted by Chinua Achebe )
THINGS FALL APART
BY WB YEATS ( Adopted by Chinua Achebe)
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart;
The centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed,
And everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction,
While the worst Are full of passionate intensity.

No wonder!
How - incredibly and so painfully prophetic

AN IROKO HAS FALLEN
INTO MUSEHOOD
(Remembering Achebe)
When the story teller sleeps
Will his words sleep with him?
You who used palm oil to eat words
Will you now fall silent?
You have entered the sacred grove
Where ancestors repose
Will you now resist the urge
To tell a tale in godspeak?
You would not be silent
For as man you regaled men
Now as god you must challenge the gods!
For they must tell you
Why brothers are no longer at ease
Why we have fallen apart
They must for the sake of the rendition.
And now you must whisper
Muse like to the initiate
That in the retelling
We find the ease to mend the broken pot.

@Dele Awogbeoba
Dele Awogbeoba, you sir need to see a shrink. Achebe had more success in his little toe than you will have in your whole body over 3,4 or 5 lifetimes.
Bros stop fooling urself
Somebody tell this man to stop fooling himself not Nigerians
You are such a fool!
You are such a fool! pathetic....
Crocodile Tears
Now they are shedding crocodile tears, those who made him die in exile.
It shall never be well with you all.
And it shall never be well with Nigeria.
Never.
Dele Awogbeoba
The man lived a good life, so he does not need your pity.
One of his sons is a successful doctor in Boston area. Can we say the same about your father? I bet your father is area boy begging for food in Lagos.
Nigeria is almost dead because of your kind, so when you gloat about Nigeria remember that you have nothing to gloat about.
Finally, death will come to you and to you mother and father, it is a matter of time.
A Chimp Crying Crocodile Tears
President Dumbo, Port-harcout Degree (Ph.D) holder should hide his face in shame. The legen rejected everything he represents and the Alams pardon may have traumatized the ol' man to death, having finally given up on hope for a better Nigeria. The Achebes family should keep Dr. Dumbo away from the funeral should they decide to bury him in Naija. Prof. Chinua Achebe was an honourable man, Dumbo is not. He's a crook.
Professor Achebe's remains should be embalmed and immortalized in a Museleum for posterity! As with the Popes, Lenin, Chm. Mao, Hugo Chavez and other Hirohitos. At least, we need to build him a Temple where young writers like us can worship by revisitng his works.
Sha, May His Soul Rest in Peace!
Call urself to order.
Is you and your family and your entire tribe is evil.You family and your tribe has being chain spiritually thts why your tribe will not hav Achebe instead wole.shot d f**k-up ngbati ngbati foul.
Achebe, a moral icon vs the PDPsadists, thieves and hypocrites
Achebe must be counted as one of the best literary talents the world has produced. He will also be remembered as a paragon of virtue and exemplary morality- a timeless icon that stood out in the sea of sleaze and impunity as represented by the PDP goons, thieves, fornicators and murderers in the likes of the hypocritical and thieving bro Jonathan and his sadistic band of fellow looters and election riggers. May his soul rest in perfect peace!
History can never be twisted 2...
Perhaps that explains why most Yorubas quasi-intellectuals would have preferred that nobody countered the volume of lies which they have
over the years peddled as being the "true" history of events before, during, and after the Nigerian civil war. That also explains why most of them were busy running their dirty mouths, criticizing Achebe even while stupidly affirming that they have never seen the book in question, and that they do not intend to read the book.
Achebe has done humanity his last favor by penning down the historical truth of the Nigeria - Biafra civil war in the book titled There was a Country, and he has departed in a blaze of glory to be in the bossom of the lord, taking his seat in the council of saints.
At this point Africa and humanity do not need the sympathy of tripple faced maggots like the cowardly Yorubas, and others, over the death of Achebe, because such a sympathy will amount to a sacrilege on the legacy of Saint Achebe!
Long Live Biafra!!!
May the soul of this honest
May the soul of this honest and great man Rest In Peace. Amen.
History can never be twisted 1...
No amount of infantile rant from Yorubas and other maggots on SR will ever come close to denigrating the stellar legacies of the GREAT IROKO TREE
OF AFRICA -Prof. Chinualumogu Achebe- the great son of Africa!
Due to the congenital treachery induced myopia of the Yorubas, they can never see beyond their nose, or may be beyond their deep seated envy and bitterness towards the Igbo race. This is the main
reason behind all the noise from self proclaimed Yoruba pundits, and quasi-intellectuals who conveniently ignored other issues addressed by Achebe in his last classic "There Was a Country" and focused only on attacking a manifest truth already know to everybody and was only retold by Achebe just because the criminal in question is their tin god Awolowo!
However, history they say is the best judge, but we must
be wary of the authors of the history, because victors write history, and the vanquished is always villified in historical accounts written by victors.
Achebe Overseas Death
Shame !! Shame !! Shame !! NIGERIA. Prof Achebe died in a foreign Hospital becos we dont have a good hospital to cater for his Medical needs. Prof died in a foreign land becos we were unable to provide a safe environment with uninterupted power supply, kidnap free, secured and sustainable environment.
We want to spend N4billion on a First Lady House yet we cant spend N1billion on a medium Specialist 100 Bed Hospital with state of the art modern equipments.
Nigeria PDP, we hail .
Achebe was no patriot!!
To describe a man who was first and foremost an Igbo advocate a Nigerian patriot is to engage in monumental deceit. His utterances and books especially the last one clearly show that he viewed Nigeria from the Igbo perspective. He never graduated to a National citizen not to talk of a World citizen which his literary achievements should have made him.
Achebe was an Igbo tribalist and Yoruba hater.
Nevertheless I commiserate with his family.
When I first heard the news
When I first heard the news of your departure I wanted to cry until I remembered when he said "there was a country". I cleaned my eyes because that country will surely rise again to part with you no more. You are truly a hero that will never die!
senior nigeria national rest in us forever !
bless today as the day he was born to enlighten his people and people of the world God gave to mankind. Nonetheless, the babylon rulers of the world that includes Nigeria on behalf of pdp leadership will forever be hunted by our father Achebe Chinua's hereafter dream.
may his candle stick continue to burn and blaise in the heart of all African evil doers. daddy lives in the Heart of his like-mind, even in the heart and mind of Nigeria politicians with aim of repentance from looting and killing this man strived to eliminate in Nigeria through his social nerwork of Education and patriotism.
the true seer of a concorted nation called Nigeria.
we ever grateful for Life well fulfill in advance, now and to come.
Pa Achebe, Nadimma
Hard to replace. Most of us alive today grew up hearing and reading Achebe.
What can I say, Naa ke oma
