The Axe-man Strikes: Jonathan Shakes Up Army, Police, Navy, SSS, New Faces Announced
Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan today effected a wholesale removal of all the service chiefs—military, police and intelligence—appointed by his late boss, Umaru Yar'Adua.
The firings, which had long been expected, swept away the Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. A. Dambazau, the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Paul Dike, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin.
But it was not all bad news for Pentirin, who becomes the new Chief of Defense Staff. Major-General Onyeabor A. Ihejirika, formerly Director of Engineering at Defence Headquarters, becomes the new Chief of Army Staff. Admiral O.S Ibrahim is the new Chief of Naval Staff and Air Vice-Marshal Umar is the new Air Force chief of Nigeria.
The Director General of State Security Services, Afakriya Gadzama was also removed in today’s political bloodbath. He was replaced by Ita Ekpeyong.
One of the most compelling developments was in the police, where Jonathan sacked the bumbling Inspector-General of police, Ogbonaya Onovo , and replaced him with Hafiz Ringim.
Until his appointment, Ringim was the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 9. Observers say it is of considerable interest that he was promoted above all the DIGs, a fact that may suggest Jonathan intends to weed out all of them.
Ringim was the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State when Jonathan served there briefly as governor. Police sources describe him as a very “wealthy” police officer, with homes in the United Kingdom and Spain. They also characterize him as a very intelligent man that may have been brought in to facilitate Jonathan’s electoral hopes next year, a euphemism for rigging.
Maj. Gen. A. Dambazau, it will be recalled, is the army boss that collaborated in the smuggling of a comatose Umaru Yar’Adua into Nigeria last year, without the knowledge of Jonathan.
Today’s extensive top-level realignment by Jonathan comes on the eve of the long Sallah holiday, which begins tomorrow, and the date seems to have been carefully chosen. Some of the affected officers are even thought to be out of the country.
Jonathan is expected to announce his bid for the presidency in the next few weeks. It will be the first time in a strangely-successful political career that he will ever ask to be voted for. But he faces important opposition within the ruling People’s Democratic Party.
President: Who to be and not to be
IBB it is very unfortunate u want to make amends for ur sins. But many seems not to believe you. Although u aired by following bad advisers. U would have been celebrated today, but for the evil whatever doers that deceived u jux in two days. Your administration organised the best election in Nigeria so far, but unfortunately truncated it again. Where are those evil doers today?. Many are hiding their heads now. While some who still want to get something from u are still pushing their ways. Pls kindly take this simple advice. If I were in ur shoes i will let ego down and beg GOD for forgiveness, becos many suffered and died for ur singular act. I am not in the capacity to pass judgment. Come out and throw shame to the wind and publicly apologize using different media to teaming Nigerians who sees nothing good in you. The mistake u are making is that those detractors are on the match again to decisive u. Pls retract, you have no war to fight. War against the MASSES is the greatest war nobody would want to fight. The problem on ground is beyond writing in the tabloid. Know that those even unborn while u were in office have good knowledge of what happened during ur tenure. Pls there is no other country you can call your own except NIGERIA. Although history is hard to erase. The only way out is to follow the simply advice above to rewrite your history. Nigerians have forgiving spirits. The best you can get now is not through politics but humanitarian drive and statesman role.
Speak well of your nation!
It is foolishness to call someone who has not been convicted for stealing a thief. I will advice you be more courteous of your comment posted on the internet particularly concerning citizens of Nigeria as what you say about your leaders makes or mal the image of the country in the international community. Also, one can get wealthy through hardwork or divine favour from God. These are inevitable facts and you include them in your ways of getting wealthy, please. Further, you should know that not all rich men in Nigeria are thieves. the fact that the pot is black does not mean that the whole food is burnt- there are still good and credible people citizens in our country. We should not only speak ill of our country, (all faith and no work is death) we should also work and fight for our country to be great, thank you.
RE-Hafiz A. Ringim as acting IGP
I have read your report on acting IGP,and an glad that you indicated that he is very intelligent and I believe that what is needed. As he cannot compromise his position for any personal interest. In respect of his wealth, you better find out from reliable source, I came from the same area with acting IGP,I know for certain that his Father is very rich and very famous in Ringim and his family members are all rich. My believe is that as a rich man the IGP cannot be entice with money. let pray for almighty God to give him wisdom and courage to perform excellently well. I urge the Govt. to speed up and confirm him please.
I think this man has
I think this man has information wahala. He should go and sit in the dust where he belongs.Coward
what about through business?
what about through business?
Too Rich to Serve
Ringim or Ringleader, or whatever his name is a thief. How did Ringim get wealthy? There are 3 way to get wealthy amid poverty. One is to inherit the money from your parents. Two is to win a lottery, and three is to rubb from others. Which one of these does Ringim fit? In Nigeria, if people hero-worship a policeman for his wealth, believe me that policeman is a thief. The question we should be asking is how did Ringim make his money and from where? President Jonathan can make him anything he wants but the truth remains that Ringim is A THEIF! He should declare his asset now before he takes office, or else you know what? Very simply, Ringim is too rich to be a public servant or in government service.
Presidenct: who to be and not to be.
Those who must lead right must lay down their lives for the followers.
IBB is a citizen of this nation His wrongs are not worse than some of ours But If he must come as a president, Let him go to jail and spend 2years for internal reformation we shal consider him.

new services chieves appoint,it was absolutely correct. But never stand at ease till the parade is over.Mr President,in history of world politics today, you're the most God favorable politician so far i have ever seen. There are three basic social amenities that both poor and rich share together in good governing countries, such as good road, continues power supply and continues supply good tap water. But over 30years ago our brothers from Northern and Western parts of Nigeria, had been ruling and messed up the natural resources that God blessed our great country with.Mr President God knows his reasons for chosen you to lead Nigerian to the promised land,Mr President your success run according your name, for that Nigerian need good Luck J.continues power supply, good road and continues water supply.suggestion to review the license of sole importer, especially on food stuff matters,to enable poor people afford it.
THEY SHOULD BE ARRESTED
The ex service chiefs should also be arrested and prosecuted accordingly. They have all made a mess of Nigeria and also failed to do their job. They seem to be concerned of their positions than doing their jobs. This is even coming too late when Nigerians are crying for their lives to be protected by these people whom are supposed to protect them.
People can write whatever they like down here, but the truth is that Mr.President has done well by sacking them, he should go further and arrest them also.
JEGA MUST RETURN JEGA
YOU YOU KNOW THAT JEGA MUST RETURN JEGA. OUR PRESIDO JONATHAN EBELE GOODLUCK AZIKIWE (JEGA) MUST BE RETURN BY INEC CHAIRMAN, JEGA TO FINISH HIS GOOD WORKS. BEFORE HE DECLARES, DO NOT FORGET CUSTOM CHIEF THIEF, THE DIRECTOR OF NTA(IBB'S MAN), PRISON'S BOSS, FERMA BOSS. AND ALL THOSE ATIKU MEN IN CUSTOMS. TAKE NOTE IF MUST GO FORWARD THE AXE MUST CONTINUE TO FALL ON HEADS.

Silly little people talking
Silly little people talking about tribe. Do you think if an Igbo/urhobo/Ijaw/Yoruba/Bini/calabar/Ibira/Hausa/Tiv/......./ man gets appointed as this or that, that he is going there to herald and spear-head the interests of his tribe? Of course not! He will go there to spear-head the interests of himself and his immediate family. If he is very charitable, then maybe he'll consider his extended family and town/village. Stupid people; don't you ever learn??? According to the write up ......Police sources describe (ringim) him as a very “wealthy” police officer, with homes in the United Kingdom and Spain"...... Doesn't that give you dummies a clue about the calibre of people being appointed?
On the flip side though, any man that gets appointed to a top military/civil service job and goes there to represent the interests of his tribe is very unprofessional!! He should be representing the interests of all tribes; the interests of Nigeria!!! Herein lays the difference between Nigeria and a country like U.K./Germany/USA. Celebrating your tribe man being appointed to a top position (or another tribe's person being sacked) is an 'ego trip', and by doing that you are falling victim to the manipulations of the politician doing the appointing. Won't you rather the right man is appointed to the job? Don't you want your country to move forward? Don't you retards ever learn??? I'm not hiding behind any anonymous/unverified rubbish, because I believe in what I'm saying. Eddie (eddm4n@yahoo.com)
it appears you are looking
it appears you are looking for a political appointment where you will join the likes of the president to loot Nigeria, Ole!!!!
Shameful Manner of Firing
Nigeria is a funny and an ungrateful country. Consider the way the service chiefs were relived of their duties and postings. Inferring from media reports, the President didn’t even have the courtesy to privately inform them of his decision. Sure, it is his prerogative to make such decisions; but at least -- considering that these men had given most of their adult lives to the service of the country -- the least they deserved was a polite and dignified phone call from the President and not a media-firing. In the case of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazzau, he was away to New York on an official duty when he was supposed to have gotten the call from family members. Nonsense! What a shameful way to relieve him of his duties. Any wonder why most don’t give a f-k about the country? Wasn’t Goodluck Jonathan supposed to be a different type of President?

Dangote Donates $2m to Pakistan’s Flood Victims
Yeye man, Nigerians kids are dying daily of cholera and other diseases, how much has he donated for the cure of cholera in Nigeria. stupid man, the Jos Riots, how much did he give to rehabilitate those families that lost thier bread winners. the Alimajeris in the Norths, what has he done for these kids to have better life, the ogun pa flood what did he do nosense and ingredient. I am not against him donating to the Pakistaning people. but the yoruba proverb says na house we dey look b/4 we go outside.
Stay focused
Please let's stay focused. This could be our Zion train;every one MUST get onboard!
Remember: You also must be the change you want to see in other!
Thanks and God Bless Nigeria
Why commends Dike
who is this loud speaker? going by military technicalities, nigerians! they think they know everything and they know nothing. Dike's job in the present position is more of Administration. Bull shite.
He's more of an adviser even though senior in rank. Like Useni and Bamaiyi in those days. Useni was senior but Bamaiyi had more power as Useni had no troops under his command. just finding excuses to justify his failures. Are you promoting DIKE. they are all failure as long as I am concern. if roberries persist in the land, Kidnapping reign supreme and they all cannot check the excesses. what is their usefulness. all for these gullible nigerians to be advocating and supporting them for failing the Nigerian states.we should call a spade a spade. until we started to tell our leaders the bitter truth that is when the country will move forward irrespective of where we come from.
ignore them
most of the people on this forum that are being tribal and claiming to be fighting an igbo cause are agents of distraction.....ignore them.the president did well on this one
THE TRUTH IS BITTER..
THIS IS VERY GENIUNE.
New appointments
God bless Nigeria. I dont know that person who will be appointed in Nigeria and people will not read meanings. I just want to appeal to the appointees to disappoint their detractors by doing what is right. Whether Ringim is Rigging, time will tell. just do what is right to garrantee GOODLUCK for Nigerians
Bunch of fools.
This is a good step towards improving the security of this country. remove those old fooools.......
i hope the current shake-up
i hope the current shake-up by pres.jonathan is with good intent, with the hope of consolidating democracy rather than bring yes-men to actualize his presidential bid in 2011 polls
Happy Onovo is gone!
Of all the officers removed, the one i like most and am sure most Nigerians liked most is that of Onovo. He is a useless corrupt officer, who failed to change the attitude of Nigerian police. Instead, he joined to be reaping trillions from road blocks and so forth.
And this is the challenge for the new man. If he does not do his work well, Our God will remove him and put a right thinking person there.
Nigeria will soon be better.
@Abbey going by military
@Abbey going by military technicalities, Dike's job in the present position is more of Administration. He has no trrops at his command. He's more of an adviser even though senior in rank. Like Useni and Bamaiyi in those days. Useni was senior but Bamaiyi had more power as Useni had no troops under his command
Nice move Mr. President!
The recent action of President Jonathan is long overdue. With insecurity all over Nigeria, do you want the President to leave a failing team unchanged? President Goodluck Jonathan has done well in removing all those pepper soup security chieves.
Some people lack depth. Why bringing ethnic attachment to any national issue. No public office is a right, it is a priviledge to serve and no section of the country can lay claim to Nigeria than other sections. We are all equal because there is no super Nigerian. If you go outside the counrty to another nation, whatever may be your social standing, they will call you a Nigerian with no other appelation.
It is only small people with small mind that bring ethnicity into any national discuss because it is their overused weapon in marginalising other citizens.
DO WHAT YOU FEAR!
Nigeria is a very complex and tribalistic enclave. The president has to do what is right, and in this case he had done well. He must know that if he takes the right decisions, the majority of Nigerians will always support him. Nigerians are no daft even though some tiny cabals who raped our common treasury and are swimming in our stolen oil money will always employ their stooges to try to discredit every decision by the president, most Nigerians can not be deceived by their antics. Well done Mr. President, Be bold and do what you fear man!
