Azazi, Yakowa Tragedy: Crashed Navy Helicopter Had ‘Engine Failure’ After 10 Trips
The Nigeria navy executive Agusta 109E helicopter, which crashed yesterday killing Kaduna State Governor Patrick Yakowa, former NSA Andrew Owoye Azazi and four others, had engine failure, naval sources have said.
SaharaReporters learned that the pilot of the helicopter communicated with the control tower in Port Harcourt to report the problem before it crashed to the ground and caught fire. The chopper belonged to the Nigeria navy, but it had been placed at the exclusive service of the president in the Niger Delta region.
The navy has had three Agusta 109E helicopters. In 2007, one of them crashed due to bad weather as it approached the Owerri airport in the night, accompanying INEC election materials. Four persons died in the crash.
The other two, NN07 and NN08, which actively worked the Bayelsa airspace yesterday, were commissioned in 2009.
Sources told SaharaReporters that the choppers had been placed almost exclusively at the service of President Goodluck Jonathan and his cronies, which is the reason why they were deployed to carry VIPs to and from the Port Harcourt International Airport for a private burial event of presidential aide Oronto Douglas that had no official value.
Prior to yesterday's deadly flight, the naval choppers also carried VIPs to the funeral of President Jonathan's brother, Meni, less than two weeks ago.
At the time of the crash, the helicopter had reportedly done 10 shuttle trips between Port Harcourt and the burial place of Mr. Douglas's father in Okoroba. Landing and taking off from the soccer field of a decrepit local school in the town.
The flight was reportedly the last one, but the engine failed some ten minutes after takeoff, leading to the fatal crash.
President Jonathan, who had earlier attended an overnight “Holy Ghost Congress” at the Redeemed Church of God on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway then issued a terse statement which revealed the names of crash victims and the usual promise that a probe of the crash will be conducted.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jonathan has ordered two new luxury helicopters from the same manufacturer, AgustaWestland, the Anglo-Italian helicopter company based in Italy. The two AW 101 VIP helicopters will cost Nigeria $40 million. In 2010, Mr. Jonathan ordered three presidential jets as soon as he took office.
Do you think the crash could
Do you think the crash could have been avoided if the aircraft was checked before every take-off? Perhaps so many flights in such a short time did something to the engine, especially since the helicopter wasn't new. I wonder if something like Aircraft Ground Support Equipment at ITWMilitaryGSE.com would have changed the crash outcome...
This is elimination, period
This is elimination, period. The pilot knew his passengers in advance. Both men christians and close allies of the president and Vp. plenty of trouble ahead.
Something Fishy
I think that something fishy happened here. It is a security related matter.

ITS TIME SAHARA REPORTERS START BEING OBJECTIVE IN YOUR REPORT,YOU HARDLY IMBIBE THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF JOURNALISM, STOP COLLECTING BROWN ENVELOPES AND PATRONAGE TO TANISH SOME ONES IMAGE, MOST OF YOUR REPORTERS ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE QUESTIONABLE PAST, AND I REPEAT QUESTIONABLE PAST, ITS TIME YOU GROW UP
B/a//d Government and maintenance/
My condolence goes to the families who have lost their friend, father, brother, governor, political associates and others. The Nigerian government have dwelled so much in the minor, leaving the major.I am not surprise, because such a jet have been packed up days without check or servicing.Again, what is the distance between PH and Okoroba? if our roads are passable and well fixed, why would this jet runs for more than ten shuttles before finally picking Yakowa and Azazi last?some would have boded vehicle and the journey would be easier.Nevertheless, i would miss patrick Ibrahim yakowa so much, i love him. Rest In Peace........
The good ones never last.
there is a hausa saying that : 'na gari, baya 'karko'that good nurtured individual never last! Well, much as i doubt this long held dictum of the Hausa/Fulani, with the death of Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, a compassionate, level-headed,cooooool and culculative individual; im wont to believe that saying now!
among all the so-called middle-belters(Northern Christians),one could get someone like Yakowa who is inbued with sobriety, temperence and good neighbourliness.hardly can you find one, except may be, general Gowon.
May his family have the fortitude to bear this painful loss.
Truth is until GEJ himself
Truth is until GEJ himself die in a crash, his governemnt, or any government for that matter will not do anything about nigerians flying in coffins. All our eaaroplanes are flying coffins yet this government says age of aircraft is not important but maintenance. Why are they not driving in peaugeot 403/404 or even citron
yakowa- a christian, paid the
yakowa- a christian, paid the price for boko haram and azazi that knows that top government officials are involved in the scandal had to go as well. Jonathan is a chicken that has fallen prey to the demands of the sector who want a muslim governor.. let us watch and see how boko haram activities will reduce. in nigeria we have no value for life and it is just too sad.
A CLEAR CASE OF MURDER!
Azazi was already marked for death - when he spoke the truth about Boko Haram and their sponsors.(cf. "The Fate of Azazi" by Aliyu Tilde", April 30th., 2012! And Yakowa (a Christian Governor in the North!) had to be disposed of.
His successor: a Muslim! Simple.
I had already warned in my article "Jonathan & Naija´s Mumu Christians" that
Jonathan made a silly mistake, replacing Azazi with Dasuki! If my instincts are anything to go by, Jonathan is next! Or Oritsejiafor.
I don´t understand why people never learn from history. Remember IRONSI!
Break up Nigeria now and stop all this nonsense!
CONSPIRACY
I dont want to believe that it was an accident. Why Yakowa and Azazi considering their positions on national issues such a Boko Haram. I think their is a conspiracy to eliminate these two great sons of our country.
May their souls rest in peace.

i just wonder
as a young girl in dis country of ours i jst wonder what the future has in stuck for us with all this problems here and there..........I met Mr Yakowa once when he was the deputy Gov. he was a nice man indeed i also met Azazi in a church progrm where he donated a huge amount money for the church building may their soul resr in peace!
Our leaders don't learn.
Our leaders don't learn. There are reports of British Prime Minister, and his likes in developed countries using do not use public property or fund when they are attending to matteers that do not concern the state but their private lives. Here in Nigeria, military choppers are placed to taxi VIPs to the burial of a presidential aide's father; not even the president's father but the father of his aide. Where are our laws; where is commong sense; is this some punishment? But why does it have to be the better one among them?
MR anonymous, would you stop
MR anonymous, would you stop abusing Islam? Muslims are different from Islam. If a Muslim does not practice what Islam teaches, it is a Muslim that is to blame not the Islam as it is the only true religion in this world. Islam does not ordain its adherents to jubilate when any human being dies, hence you can criticize a Muslim for engaging in Unislamic practice, but Islam is a perfect religion please!
you missed the part that the
WORD! MY BROTHER/SISTER.ON POINT. I MUST AGREE WITH YOU.
the death of kaduna state governor
Its so painful that Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa and Andrew Azazi has to go this way.I feel so saddened with such great loss. The fact reamains the same that,Nigerians will always have to pass through such kind of pains,so far we don't do away with our fire-brigade approach to important issues. The issue of poor maintenance culture should be properly curbed.I believe the helicopter was overdue for maintenance.
Remaining Jonathan, he must becareful too.
Those idots planning to overtake Government at all cost becuase they feel Nigeria is for them alone, have done it. Remaining Jonathan himself. He needs to becareful. A word is enough for the wise.
Thanks.
Azazi's truthful common BHaram killed Azazi, crash a cover up!!
GEJ should be careful with Sambo. He is more dangerous than he looks. His presidential ambition is what led to the death of Azazi and Yakowa, I may be wrong, but it is a strong suspicion. The day Azazi exposed the role of government officials having a hand in B/Haram mayhem, was the very day he became enemy of those people, Sambo inclusive. Muktar Yero is a long "partner" of VP Sambo, whose sexuality is known all over Kaduna state, a fact. This makes me question the role of the so call Islamic puritans of condoning such a person? It is a shame. GEJ lost it when he chose Sambo as against Makarfi, who everyone in Kaduna know to be astude and season leader of all ethnic groups.
THEY ESCOTED AZAZI
The people that died in the crash were sacrificed to see the end of Azazi. The circumstance under wich Azazi left the government makes him a target. They have finally succeeded. We miss our governor Yakowa.
RE: Naval Helicopter Crash
Every life is precious and death is a reminder of our own mortality.May the souls of all those who died in this tragedy and souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
We have some lessons to learn from this tragic event. 1) Military aircraft are NOT for pleasure rides. The very stringent checks applied to civilian aircraft do NOT apply to the military. For example, if the reports in the papers are to be relied on, that chopper had done 10 landings and take offs with the same crew. Most civilian airlines restrict their crew to a maximum of 4 in a day. 2)Passengers aboard military aircraft are NOT covered by insurance. Even a PERSONAL ACCIDENT POLICY excludes such events. 3) Let us as a nation examine ourselves. The military should be left to do their own thing. Bayelsa is a riverine area, let us develop the waterways and provide good boats to open up the place. Flying MUST NOT be an option.
Re: Trust no Hausa ......
Your comment on this sad event truly shows that your mind is skewed outside sensible persons of the SS or SE. Remember that your Kins finds exclusive safe living amidst Hausa/Fulani enclaves. And remember that whether on board a plane or in your bed death is inevitable. If you don't try and swallow your sentiments and embrace unity; you will surely end up relegated to bottom among intellects of you clan since you are different.
Naija we just dey look
I was in Kaduna, but I did not see any celebration. Even if it happen it is the result of our political sentiment created by the politicians themselves. Their is no cause for celebration as Kaduna will be pushed backward now as Namadi will be the one dictating events in the state.KADUNA IS FINISHED. WE MISS YOU GENTLE YAKOWA.
yeah right, c wat has become
yeah right, c wat has become if Egypt, seems like they are heading for another revolution.
Maintenance
Nigerian government should learn how to maintain their fleets. But will corruption in the highplaces allow them? Routine check should be of utmost importance for these things fly in the air and the risk is so high. God have mercy on the bereaved.
