BREAKING NEWS: Nigeria At 50- Two Deadly Car Bombs Explode In Abuja

Scene of bomb blast
By SaharaReporters, New York

Two car bombs exploded near the new complex of the federal high court in Abuja about two hours ago, the  bombs exploded on Shehu Shagari way killing 8 and injuring several people. The explosions caused major panic and confusion at the Eagle Square venue of the 50th anniversary event in Nigeria. The events continued as at the time of fling this report.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, (MEND) ,had earlier issued a statement alerting participants of its intention to bomb the event. See statement below:

With due respect to all invited guests, dignitaries and attendees of the 50th independence anniversary of Nigeria being held today, Friday, October 1, 2010 at the Eagle Square Abuja, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta  (MEND) is asking everyone to begin immediate evacuation of the entire area within the next 30 minutes. This warning expires after 10.30Hrs

Several explosive devices have been successfully planted in and around the venue by our operatives working inside the government security services.

In evacuating the area, keep a safe distance from vehicles and trash bins.

There is nothing worth celebrating after 50 years of failure. For 50 years, the people of the Niger Delta have had their land and resources stolen from them. The constitution before independence which offered resource control was mutilated by illegal military governments and this injustice is yet to be addressed.

What does MEND want to

What does MEND want to achieve with this?

Killing Garba, Chukwu and Bayo that just came to celebrate.

If they had bombed senators and Reps, Governors etc, sure, no one would have complained.

But killing innocent people has just revealed that these are MEND guys are brainless people.

God would punish you all!!!

Cowards

Fucking cowards. Selfish set of people. Allah judgement awaits you. U all will die mysterious deaths and ur body will be fuels of hell fire in the hereafter.

Gullible People!

Nigerians are indeed Gullible, petty people. I have said it several times and will repeat again, the "vultures are gathering and it will soon be every man for himself". Take it or leave it! This so called Country has never been a NATION and therefore, its relics will have to deintegrate. This contraption had ceased to exist long ago anyway, so whether it is MEND, OPC or the AREWA PEOPLE'S CONGRESS or whoever, it doesn't really matter. For so long Nigerians continue to exist in pennury, hunger, joblessness and deprivations at the expense of the corrupt politicians and militricians, the day is nigh!

BRAVO!!!

MEND should take its next attack to the National Assembly of Thieves – the so-called legislators who are nothing but corrupt criminals. It’s about time something drastic is done to rescue Nigeria from these terrible people.

I am currently in Europe for

I am currently in Europe for my master degree program. I am from the niger delta and i will be blunt with you.
It takes one person, group, people to cause a change and the people we have in power cannot effect a change, they are there for their own pocket. Why do we have very rich and very poor people? MEND stands for what they believe and until they achieve their aim they won't stop. Our leaders spent so much money on security and yet they can't stop kidnapping. I stands for evenly distribution of Nigeria resources to all parts of the country. If they are crying for there's then you should start your own movement, maybe through protests or any which way you think could effect a change. Tell me how many of our political leader's children are schooling in Nigeria?
Look at IBB and tell me he's not a thieve, what is the government doing about it? WE NEED A JERRY RAWLINGS to effect a change. ALL OF OUR PAST LEADERS HAVE FAILED AND THEY NEED TO FACE THE BOOK. Then the issue of corruption will be settled!!!

Alas! car bombing has now been extended to Nigeria.

Guys,i have a funny feeling that MEND isn't actually responsible for this. I believe the incessant sponsored religious riots of Kano, Jos, Lagos e.t.c have now been extended to car bombing. This may be the "polilooters" on the other side of the isle at work. But if MEND is really responsible then it's totally dumb, a peaceful protest to eagle square would've sent a better message. Now 8 ordinary poverty stricken citizens are dead while the "polilooters" are having a jamboree!!! what a patient God we've got.

MENDS HAS SET US BACK MORE THAN 50 YRS

If mend thinks that what they did will help us, then they are mistaken. They have even set the Niger Delta backwards. All they were trying to do is to show that they can do things in Abuja but what they actually did was kill 8 innocent people.

In the past, they were supported by the people of the Niger Delta but they have lost their support because even if the people of the Delta want better oil revenue and standard of living, it will not be attained by the lost of innocent lives.

I am glad that CYNTHIA WHITE reads these columns and when she does, I want her to know that the people of the Niger Delta are not terrorist and do not support the killing of poor innocent souls. Terrorism has never achieved anything in this world and will not work in Nigeria.

If this is what the future holds for us then I support the total elimination of MENDS because I might be standing next to bus tomorrow.

Jonathan is pushing our fragile peace to the brink of collapse

Jonathan is pushing our fragile peace to the brink of collapse by his inordinate ambition for power. The militants are working with and for their brother, Jonathan. They are all terrorists. They think they have a monopoly of violence. Only in Nigeria can terrorists be granted amnesty. Only in Nigeria can a terrorist be president. Country of absurdities.

Bomb blast

They should look well , this is sabotage from certain elements that fill that Nigeria is thier home, scratch the surface it is not just MEND

MEND HAS LOST FOCUS KILLING

MEND HAS LOST FOCUS KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE,ENOUGH OF THIS NONSENSE. GOVERNMENT SHOULD STAND UP AND FACE THEM WAR TO WAR. WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THEM AND THEY HAVE LOST PUBLIC SYMPATHY. POOR MEND.

I agree with O.Com

totally agree with you. Who are the terrorists?

What Does MEND Want?

If they were after the looters and politicians that had kept Niger Delta underdeveloped, they would have struck at venues where it was exclusive to have maximum looters casualty. In as much as casualties of war are not limited to combatants, MEND should define rules of engagement or they will end up terrorising the very citizen whose support they are seeking.

Happy Independence Day folks!

If Nigeria couldn't celebrate this one day without disgrace, then there's no hope. We're deceiving ourselves if we think that this illegal contraption, this British created mass criminal enterprise called Nigeria can carry on for much longer.

This will come to pass again, whether we like it or not:

TO ALL PRO-NIGERIAN-GOVERNMENT CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS FORUM

If MENDS IS A CRIMINAL GROUP, WHAT DO YOU CALL ALL RULERS OF NIGERIA BETWEEN 1960 AND 2010 THAT HAVE LOOTED AND PLUDERED NIGERIA YOUTHS AND MORTGAGED THEIR LIFE AND FUTURE, AND ARE STILL DOING SAME? ARE YOU ALSO ONE OF THEM? IF YOU ARE THEN YOU ARE ALSO A CEIMINAL ANY ANNONYMOUS CONTRIBUTOR.

Presidential speech on Nigeria at 50 Day

The speech read by the President may have been written by Northerners and given to GEJ to read.
1) The founding fathers of independence were omitted,Zik and Awo were not mentioned and no tribute, paid. Nigerians should have stood up for 5 minutes,to honour them.
2) Instead, Saduana of Sokoto's name was mentioned as the wisest man Nigeria has ever had; his wisdom, we must always learn.
3) GEJ said or read his notebook saying "Nigerian Military rule and Civil war produced a polluted national landscape".-meaning Ironsi and Ojukwu brought pollutants to pollute Niger Delta Areas
4)GEJ told his guests, "Nigeria has started a new journey and the politicians are on the road, never taken before, since Independence, to looting of
Niger Delta Petrodollars,- a process Umaru Dikko started before IBBs, Abachas, Attikus, OBJs, Senators, Governors and LGA-Chairmen joined the scamble. Since 1999, the road to treasury looting has widened and has branches leading to killings, to kidnappings, to extrajudicial killings, to armed robberies, to political assassination and to tribal and religious hates.
5)When the President of Nigeria says, 'Nigeria is filled with great expectations',he forgets to say:What thse expectations are, but he admits that there is No political stability in Nigeria since Independence 50 years ago.Indeed Nigerian people and tribes are filled with great expectations of a peaceful disintegration and the people have been hoping and dreaming of it ever since 50 years
Nigerian political and religious instabilities are so sharp that very soon new nations will be born out of the rumlbes. It is really on the road to crashing.

Where is the morality?

Any act that targets unarmed civilians is vicious,lilly-livered and loses the high moral ground argument and search for support for its cause.

I condemn this act in all totality and all other civil minded groups should do so now. How do you argue Ffor or justify an act that leads to the death of a struggling man, pregnant mother or an innocent child with this type of terminal and indiscriminate act?

It is a wrong and despicable in as much as we get the sense of your outrage at the inequity and anomie that pervades our society.

What has MEND done about its Governors and Chairmen that have embezzled all the monies sent to them and their local governments? Is Abuja their home? Charity begins at home!

Groups like the IRA and PLO before you chose their targets and oppressors carefully, not unarmed civilians but collateral damage do occur. I believe in civil rights and I also believe that ultimate care be taken in righting the wrongs in our society.

No to wickedness

this is no right i see the future it is bright if you mend thinking you want to attract attention go after those you stole you suppose wealth and killing not individuals who do not know any thing about your struggle

buja bomb blast/

This is cowardly act,and should be rejected by all Nigerians.However.we need proper investigation as to the source of explosives and accertain those behind this terrible act.But DONT BRING ANY RETIRED GENERAL INTO THIS.Save NIGERIA FROM CIVIL WAR.Mind your language.

WHEN A SITTING PRESIDENT

WHEN A SITTING PRESIDENT REFERS TO MILITANTS AS HIS BROTHERS, WHEN IBB NEGOTIATES WITH THEM, WHEN KIDNAPPERS ARE OFFERED AMNESTY, WHEN... SHOULD I GO ON. NIGERIANS SHOULD WAIT AND SEE, GOD GO SOON GET OUR TIME, REMEMBER THE FLOODS IN PAKISTAN, THE EARTHQUAKES... GOD WILL NOT MISS THE LOOTOCRATIC DEMONS IN THE GOVERNMENT, MEND, SOUTH EAST, BOKO HARAM... AND THE DOCILE IDIOTS THAT DO NOTHING AND GET ANGRY WHEN YOU CALL THEIR MAD KINSMEN TO ORDER

WRONG TARGET

While I cry for the souls of the unfortunate 8 innocent people killed by MEND in this attack, i very much regret that they failed to kill the corrupt animals stealing and looting our funds.Operations like this should specifically target the hench men who have reduced us to miserable paupers in a land of plenty. The 8 innocent people were probably ordinary suffering masses like us who were just unfortunate to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.If MEND can not target these thieves successfully then it must not bomb at all.The death of fellow suffering ordinary Nigerians will make every one hate your course and turn against you.

IT'S ABOUT TIME

We have been complaining for so long without any effect on our foolish leaders. So I think it's about time someone tries a new way of communication. I condemn and abhor violence with all its ramifications, but I am about ready to suggest that the current system of trying to talk sense into looters no longer works. Lets try something different and see what happens.

Revolution by Criminals for the Criminals.

People are wondering why the Bomb attack was not targeted at he looters in Abuja? These same people looting & sucking the blood of Nigeria are also behind the MEND. Thats why I've always warned that Nigerians are too Corrupt to carry out an ideologically driven Revolution, Nigerians are mostly driven by self interest & not collective good goals. Now, the looters have MEND now added to their Arsenal for bargaining chips. Who suffers again here? The poor Masses who have perpetually raped over & repeatedly. Unfortunately, Nigerians will need to suffer more before taking their destinies into their hands. They have an unfortunate high threshold for pain & suffering, thus will make this waiting for Revolution by masses take more Donkey years.

Even 50%-50% can't solve this problems

This isn't funny. Will these killings enmancipate you? What pains me most is the life of 8 poor innocent people that died. Even if you share with MEND 50%-50% of Nigeria resources, then you will see an unending  war because the whole of that region will be in perpetual inter tribal clash. WHY? Because the so called MEND are indolent, dense, mentally derailed, foolish, enigmatic, rustic, barbaric, unruly, inhumane, no-mercy, helpless, captivated, prisoners, coward and uneducated lost souls.

Hear this, this act can not help you. Engage yourself in a mordern day warfare and stop been coward.

I say FUCK YOU MEND!!!

Can you fools(people calling

Can you fools(people calling MEND terrorists) now see that there's no way out of this mess fraudulently created by Britain except the country breaks up? It's high time each and everyone went to his father's house.
What's there to celebrate?
Celebration of darkness
Celebration of hunger
Celebration of mediocrity
Celebration of poverty
Celebration of stealing by govt. officials
Celebration of joblessness
We've got two options: Czechoslovakia or Yugoslavia's style.
MEND or whoever did this. Thumbs up!!!

Missin the point!!!

at the last check MEND does specific pipelines jobs only. Never civilian targets or fear/terror tactics. This incident is a calculated move to create distractions, confusion and opportunity for the executors. MEND is just beginning to enjoy some equity even with their kinsman at the helm. Definitly not MEND. Dont believe the HYPE!!!

IBB did it

Babangida....Ole

Bombing in Nigeria's Capital

It is TIME we question exactly WHAT our SECURITY FORCES are doing...In Abuja in the past 2 weeks, we have had our eardrums violated with LOUD,whirring helicopter buzzings overhead! .... So WHAT WERE THEY SECURING??/or OBSERVING??!!!How on earth do you explain LEAKAGE of Security documents saharareporters recently made public from a retired General to the Preseident???There must be a TOTAL OVERHAUL of our ENTIRE security system or allow the MOSSAD take over... just as the former dictator, Sani Abacha had contracted them to....About these MEND people..... Hmmmmmnnn..... Who REALLY are these MEND,,,, I mean THE ONES WHO STRUCK TODAY????.....

THIS MEND'S ACTION SPEAKS THE HEART OF THE SILENT MAJORITY

Statement by Egbe Irapada Oodua, EIRO The bombing in Abuja this afternoon by MEND should be seen as a challenge by the Niger-Detlta people: oppressed, depressed and mercilessly humiliated. Nigeria will is celebrating her 50th Anniversary. For 50 years, this country has kept her citizens trampled underfoot; no food, no water, no shelter, no vision, no mission. Here is Africa's beast, the laughing stock of the international community. This is a country, a people, once proud of a rich and flourishing culture, until the invasion of the British, her subsequent subjugation, the destruction of her culture and the humiliation of her humanity. Nigeria is currently led by one of the world's most heinous criminal political gangs; heartless, brutal and irresponsibly vicious. Nigeria is the outpost of retrogressive politics and the conscious destruction of the revolutionary fervent that would have swept the west African sub-region and turn the outpost to a civilised community. Today, Nigeria is the chief end user of imperialist socio-economic policies, the melting pot of reaction and the most visible outlet for anger and frustration of a people, which sooner than later, will spew like a volcano. Today, we call on all revolutionary movements and all self-determination groups in the South, the Middle-belt and even in the Hausa-Fulani North, if any, to unite and work towards the disintegration of this evil empire that survives on the blood of her toil worn population. This country must be broken, the conflict of culture, of values, of heritage and the unending gangsterism of the united forces of darkness that hold the country down, will be broken through the fire of nationalism, led by pro-people and anti-imperialist forces, that will arise and cut permanently the coersive subjugation of the people into a dark tunnel that only brings out the beast in us.Where do we start: 15 children kidnapped for money in Abia, a caterpilar stolen at Onitsha (caterpillar's speed's 10km P.H), Obasanjo came to power in 1999 with 20,000 in his account, he left in 2007 with a private university and a private library. State governors keep state funds in thier bedrooms, 70 percent of our university students belong to one armed cult group or the other, the police needed to be bribed to arrest a criminal, the army sees the citizens as irritants, the politicians come to power through the barrel of the gun, bayonets and cutlasses, the voters needed to be bribed before they can vote, the politicians needed to bribe voters before they could vote for them, many our kings and traditional rulers are also involved in kidnapping of fellow humans, our young girls are traveling through the desert for over 10,000 kilometers to be prostitutes in Europe, some end up in the stomach of wild animals of the sahara, some taken over by armed rebels in the desert, never to be seen again, yet the governors and the president of the country, without exception see the country as 'great and wonderful' Very soon, the wrath of the people will catch up for them, for hosting every evil that undermines the future of the black man and the African dignity. We must rise and join forces to break this impish evil called Nigeria. A break up of the country leading to the sovereignty of the Yoruba people, led by a progressive movement, will rejuvenate the race and show a golden example to the world, reclaim our dead dignity, our lost pride and the 50 years of anguish. To attempt a national revolution is an illusion, to imagine the emergence of a progressive force at the national frontier will never work, due to the deep seated ethnic cleavages. However, a revolutionary fervent that sweeps across a section, leading to a break up and sovereignty of the people, will stir other nationalities and lead to the upheaval necessary to flush out the feudal tyrants and establish of peoples government. OUR DAY SHALL COME

THIS CRIMINALS CALLED MENDS

I wonder why the Federal government considers this CRIMINALS and give them AMNESTY in the first place.
