I think Britain was a little bit hasty in giving a 7-day ultimatum to the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to release Assange, failing which the UK authorities would storm the embassy and take Assange. Britain is hinging its reason on the extradition agreement it had come to with Sweden. In my view I doubt whether this agreement could override the rule on Sovereign Immunity of an embassy. That Assange is now holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy is enough to frustrate any extradition agreement between the UK and Sweden; and both countries must understand it as being so. Sweden would not accuse the UK of violating the extradition agreement in this situation. In its bid to nail Assange over a trumped-up charge, Britain would have to enter into diplomatic discussions with Ecuador on this matter but I doubt whether Ecuador would acquiesce.
