In Eket, Armed robbers Attack UBA, Zenith Banks, Trailing PDP Election Loot

Armed robbers in the early hours of today attacked branches of two commercial banks in Eket, Southern Akwa Ibom State, and overran the rigging plans of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
The banks, Zenith and UBA, which are located on opposite sides of Grace Bill Road, were attacked between 3am and 5am. SaharaReporters learnt that the robbers somehow got wind of the PDP’s heavy movement of cash to execute tomorrow’s presidential polls and decided to go for a piece of the pie.
The robbery reportedly took PDP officials by surprise but the consequent closure of other banks did not help, as it frustrated their efforts to make alternative arrangements.
Police sources at Eket Division told SaharaReporters that an investigation into the robbery was underway as it had dispatched detectives to the crime scene. When our correspondent visited the scene of the robbery, thousands of people had gathered in the area and police and other security agencies had cordoned off the site.
Officials of the affected banks could not be reached for comments or an estimate of the cash lost in the incident, but a security source confirmed that the robbers had enjoyed access to the bank vaults.
The source said that there proof that the robbers used explosives to force their way into the bank strong room and that as many as eight dynamites may have been used in the operation. It was also reported that during the operation, the robbers were also shooting intermittently. Coupled with the explosions, the sounds caused a lot of anxiety of residents.
Security men however arrived during the robbery and put the robbers to flight. Apparently well-organized, they escaped through the Atlantic Ocean.
Some of the people who gathered at the scene were bank customers who had come to make withdrawals in preparation for Saturday, as banks will be closed for the election.
As news of the attacks spread, other banks in the town immediately shut their doors to the banking public, but they were besieged by customers waiting for them to reopen for service.

Interesting piece. Are you familiar with Akwa Ibom, Eket to be precise??? The crowd would not be standing outside as potrayed as they are liable to be arrested. Second, the Atlantic ocean is miles from Eket and not possible for the robbers to escape via that route without police conviance.Please get facts accurate before printing.

can you proof this story please because From Grace Bill where the bank is to Atlantic Ocean at Ibeno is about 25 minute drive and there is five nigeria army check point because Exxonmobil.

Am not a big fan of Nigerian politics cos i never benefited anything from the country since from the time i was born until i became a man.
The report says that the banks were attacked by 3a.m and 5a.m in the morning, and the other banks closed down because the news circulated fast.. MY Question is DO BANKS OPERATE BY THAT TIME OF THE DAY?

I am quite disturbed that Sahara Reporters let these people who write 'facebook' English have their view visible to the world. It is also worrying that some Nigerians (is it?) now tend to write in this very woeful way. One is no longer sure of which to think..have they lost the culture of good written English or just a fad!

2011 Elections

From the look of things....Very few Nigerians desire the change they claim they need. I don't have a problem with GEJ personalty. Such personalty can only rule in a sane country like Ghana.
In our own case here, It's seems Nigerians are comfortable being mediocre and would not want people like Buhari_Bakare to come and 'rock the boat'. If we criticize Buhari's for being brutal as a military ruler, have we lost sight of discipline and respect we used to enjoy as Nigerian citizens when he was a ruler? Where is the Nigerian dignity of yesterday? where is the corruption free economy we enjoyed when he was a ruler? Where is that humble and conservative lifestyle Buhari introduced to our culture?

Let me adice the editors of sahara reporters to at least reflect on some of your unfounded reports. No doubt you are neither a friend of PDP nor GEJ.You have the right not to be.
However, your inceasant attack on his person and whatever he stands for suggests your reporting is anti-PDP/ GEJ. I am not a card carrying member of any political party but as a Nigerian, it is my civic responsibility to vote and also be concerned with the affairs of the nation.
Robbers attacked a bank on the eve of the presidential election and you or whoever, alleged the money stolen was intended for rigging by PDP.ah!!!
