At least 94 contract workers at the Qua Iboe Terminal, operated by Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), an ExxonMobil subsidiary in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom, have been thrown into the already chaotic labour market in gross violation of the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Bill.

National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) officials at the Terminal told Sahara Reporters that the manner of the sack was at best inhuman.

“The management of Mobil has been very inconsiderate in the way they treat locals here, how can a worker who finished his job the previous day without any problem come to work and be locked out," the source said, who is a Union leader.

"There is no room for the workers to be briefed on the decision to relieve him of his duties, this has been the practice and we are being treated as slaves in our own country, the employer has the right to hire and fire but it should be done in line with laid down procedures,” said the Union leader who pleaded anonymity for fear of victimisation.

The source revealed to Sahara Reporters that hundreds of workers may have lost their jobs in the jobs cut, as the figure of 94 were unionized workers.

The 94 is just a tip of the iceberg because we do not have data of non unionised workers who were dismissed without notice and for committing no crime, the Union leader added.

However, Sahara Reporters investigations showed that the human resource department of the oil firm had laid a foundation for the lay off when they bribed officials of NUPENG who attended a negotiation meeting recently for the collective bargaining agreement in Lagos.

SaharaReporters gathhered that money and refrigerators were distributed to the union officials who participated in the  negotiations.

Two things; a)Which government? A government run by its 'natives' for 51 years that has never been able to do anything tangible for the people but for themselves will help you? A government that colludes with oil companies such as Shell to pollute, maim, kill and destroy its own people?

b) God helps those who help themselves. What have the ordinary Nigerians done for themselves in extricating themselves from this modern enslavement by our politicians that need the support of God?

exxonmobil should be called to order

It so unfortunate how we are been used and dumped by this company in our own land,

Am also a vitim of this,i used to work with the fire department at Que iboe terminal,i got to work on 30 september 2009 at the airstrip and was told my name is not on the roster that i should contact the contractor,

I think it"s time the government should call them to order because this is also used by the supervisors to kick out who so ever face they don"t like to see, they also use the supervisor"s as slaves masters,May the almighty lord help us in jesus name.

Saharareporters, keep us the good job

The Saharareporters brand of journalism cannot be practised here in Nigeria. Look at what is happennin to NATION newspapers. How can our society grow when our corrupt politicians rule the country with impunity. The president does not like what he sees on the front page of a national daily, he sends the untrained, rag tag police to grab the editors. Saharareporters is many miles away from the thieves.
Imagine what they could have done with Saharareporters if the outfit is operating within Nigeria. Keep up the fight Saharareporters. Nigeria shall be free from these thieves one day, God willing. By the way did you see how unhealthy Alao Akala looks with all the billions he stole.
