ExxonMobil Oil Spill: Fishermen, Youths Revolt At Ibeno

ExxonMobil Qua Iboe Spill
By SaharaReporters, New York

Youth and fishermen in oil communities in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom state, where several ExxonMobil oil spills have caused untold damage  to the environment since last December, last Monday held a demonstration to puncture the lies concocted by the oil giant.

Saharareporters had previously unveiled some of the manipulations and manoeuvres undertaken by ExxonMobil in its quest to avoid admitting blame and having to pay for its negligence.

Monday’s action by the increasingly desperate and frustrated local people disrupted work at ExxonMobil, as employees had to suspend work while the crisis lasted.

Monday’s protest was held to show the community’s loss of confidence in the ‘arrangee’ mediation of Governor Goodswill Akpabio who, last May, called the warring factions to the negotiating table.

At the meeting, Akpabio boasted to the communities that he had prevailed on ExxonMobil to provide N2 billion palliative funds for development projects in the affected communities.  That is the last that was hear of that promise, and nothing has been done.

“We the youths have discovered that the Governor has compromised with ExxonMobil management in cheating the oil producing arrears,” John Akpan a youth leader in Ibeno, told SaharaReporters. “He pretends to be on our side and yet he dines and does business in Mobil, we discovered he even has vessels at the oil fields, so there is an obvious conflict of interest.”

Speaking further, he said, “We took to the streets on Monday to show that we have totally lost confidence in Akpabio’s government on the spill matter, he has failed to bring Mobil to meet its obligations to the host community that suffered the negative impact of oil exploration and this action is just a warning for what lies ahead if Mobil fails to pay adequate compensation to us.

In a bid to score cheap political points at a sycophancy rally a fortnight ago in Eket, Governor Akpabio ordered council chairmen to steer clear of oil spill funds ‘when it comes’.

He got the applause he wanted, but he was referring to a non-existing fund and creating the impression that it is the chairmen of the local government that is against the people.

This further confirms the conspiracy plot between ExxonMobil and Akpabio to pitch the communities against each other using the age old tactics of "divide and rule."

A public statement by   ExxonMobil confirmed that indeed there was a demonstration by fishermen and community youths but failed to say what the oil firm has done to address the agitation.

The statement, which was signed by Mrs. Gloria Essien Dannar, Mobil’s Executive Director of External Relations, stated that “Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), operator of NNPC/MPN Joint Venture confirms that calm has returned and normal operations restored at our Qua Ibo Terminal (QIT).

“This followed a demonstration on Monday, August 30, 2010 around the QIT facility by some youths and fishermen in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State. The youths and fishermen were agitating for payment of compensation over an oil spill incident,” it stated.

Although ExxonMobil had always denied the full extent and impact of its oil spills from its Qua Iboe terminal, the company however exposed itself recently when it publicly called off a force majeur it had put in place since May 12, 2010 when its pipelines erupted and spilled thousands of barrels of crude oil in the Ibeno area.

ExxonMobil gleefully announced on August 11 that its Nigerian unit had lifted a three-month old force majeure on Qua Iboe oil shipments.

According to Reuters, ExxonMobil had declared the force majeure on May 12 after discovering a leak at one of its crude oil pipelines connected to its Qua Iboe export terminal, which usually averages around 400,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Exxonmobile oil spill

The oil companies in Nigerian & indeed Africa should play by the international standard rules as they do in the western world. Please the communities they work in should be developed.

SR DONT PUSH THIS STORY TO THE BACK BURNER

SR: Thanks for the forum. Please know that this so call public affairs departments (image managers) would attempt to buy this forum so they can control what story remains on the front burner. Remember we use to rely on Thisday News? Now I hardly remember it. If SR allows the forces of demand and supply of individuals and not money, they'll remain like perhaps Tribune but if they allow money bags to buy them over, SR will be a one generation business. It will pass with the founder, like Thisday.

Please keep the ExxonMobil Oil Spill Story on the front burner. BP New Orleans occurred in April 2010 and we are still preoccupied with it. ExxonMobil/Ibono story can not go away. We will ask you about and for it.

What a big shame. The oil

What a big shame. The oil spill in the gulf of Mexico was big news for months, however an oil spill in Nigerian waters doesn't make the big news networks? Something is wrong somewhere! Our fucking leaders are conniving with these multi nationals to enrich themselves whilst peoples livelyhood is been destroyed. The president should be reading the fuckers the riot act!! Look at what Venezuela did to the oil companies operating in their country.

GOD WILL PAY BACK

by stopping council chairman from controlling oil
spill compensation funds, the governor wants to
strangulate everyone except his cronies financially.
when he was commissioner in ex governor attah's
regime,he was allowed free hand to make money and
was travelling to the uk every two weeks.he thinks
with his wicked manipulations,he will have an easy
sail in 2011 elections.he pretends not to know that
the ALMIGHTY GOD is watching him.he should learn
from what happened to Abacha.

@Anonymous..I like your

@Anonymous..I like your piece, you have said it all, you,ve warned the Glorias and Udom Inoyo,s..a word is enough for the wise
As for Akpabio who is well known for his Ostrich greed and divide and rule system and lying tongue, the wrath of God will catch up with you and your entire family soon...BEWARE!!!!

fiscal federalism is the only solution-to the spills

Jonathan should not pay lip services to these oil spills in the south south. He should set up a body or a ministry to permanently take care of this very worrying issue in the Niger Delta. One visit to the area is not enough-oil is the main-stay of the nations economy-hence the need for us to start thinking of introducing fiscal federalism in the country-the spills will remain with the ppl till death do us part-while the shots are being called by the beneficiaries of the oil blocks in the former old regions, the new oil producing zones slave it out for them-yet we are being told that we are not as strong as George Walker Bush of USA, to be president of Nigeria. So, we must vote for our former slave-masters like IBB and Buhari-that Nigeria for u-

ExxonMobil Oil Spillage in Ibeno (Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria)

It is a pity that American can come to Nigeria flout as law with impunity even with the aid of our own government. But i bet you guys will not continue for so long if you must continue to do business in these communities. Thank you.

LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR

Remember when you were a hustling lawyer in Lagos? Remember your brother Isong was a PR manager in Mobil at the time? Now all the glitz and glamore he oppressed you with is gone. Do not forget what life was like then. Do not think because your brother was not as wealthy as you now are, you may not end up like him or worse. Remember the late Akpan Isemin was once a Governor of Akwa Ibom. So was Nyong Isong of AK/CR combined. Remember, ones upon a time they were very wealthy people in AK/CR. They were the likes of Victor Akan who actually brought light with his wealth to the people and they was also Esuene whose family continue to reap of his goodwill decades after his demise. But there were also the likes of Jebs, the Dr. Paper guy, Samphil, etc., who ruined the only AK/CR bank to date, Marchantile Bank with bad loans. The had wealth but nothing is left now. Not even their children have carried on their opulence.

My brother, goodwill will follow you if you "toyo nte ufok ake bagha and work in good faith for the people of Ibono by ensuring that XOM meets their contractual and moral responsibilities. Just like BP is beholden to do in New Orleans.

HOOK ON BP'S NOSE =/ GOLD AROUND XOM'S NECK

Gloria Essien Dannar, before you there were the likes of Adeyemi Wilson and Cicilia Onitiri. They was Isong Akpabio and Susan Eshiet (Ibono), the sell out. In whatever Title or guise you come in, you'll all end up in the same mediocre retirement after cheating the very people who formed the base for you to step on. Ibono will still be there when you and your current short sighted, "Locals" "Country Managers" complete your XOM cycle of use and dump. Newsflash XOM uses and dumps locals. "Locals" is what they call you all. Local have have a short shelve life. After they hit the top in Nigeria it ends. (Your position in Nigeria is equivalent to a Senior Manager and that of your EDs = Director in the Corpoaration... not any way close to executive) Whereas the expats go on to become VPs in the Corporation and the skyes is their limit thereafter.

BP pays pre-settlement, settlement and post settlement to every Tom and Harry, Nancy and Jenny in New Orleans; they pay to clean-up salvaged wild life; they pay to replace killed wild life; they pay taxes to local city council and state for loss of tax income.

In Ibono, you and your Country Management are mocking around looking to help XOM avoid its moral and contractual responsibility because you can lobby in Abuja. Your mates in Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta have fought their way into mainstream Nigerian policy making and executive position. You are fighting your people to earn a plaque and a group photograph with a white man. Newsflash ... that is all your predecessors have to show for their stupidity and that is all you'll have very soon.

Suggestion, wisen up. XOM has the power to fight even the entity called Nigeria with or without you. They fought Venezuela and even other stronger entities. Akwa Ibom, Ibono can become better with you or can remain backward with you... Your choice!

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala became celebrated after her service to motherland not before regardless of her professional and academic laurels, so is Oby Ezekwelize or even Nuhu Ribadu. Wisen up - you are nothing without a happy people at the base regardless of your profesional or academic laurels. They are a thousand and one Akwa Ibom and Ibono genius who can beat you in every measure including wealth and affluence but just have not gotten the opportunity to make a differnce.

The same goes for Udom Inoyo, Ide and the likes. Wisen up people, its just a job. Many of us do more professionally than you can ever or will do. But we just do not have the make or mar opportunity you have at present.

Will you retire and start chasing "kid witches" when your fortune declines; or would it be young girls, government contracts etc., or will you retire to move into mainstream and make laudable contributions. Only the people you stump on today can give you that base; whether they are unlettered or poor.

THE STRIKE SHOULD CONTINUE LIKE IN SOUTH AFRICA!

EXXON-MOBIL SHOULD KNOW THAT THIS CANNOT BE DONE IN THEIR COUNTRY U.S.A. THEIR GOVT. ALMOST SENT SHELL PACKING BECAUSE OF OIL SPILL. WHY THEN IS NIGERIA DIFFERENT? THE GOV. OF AKWA IBOM STATE SHOULD NOTE THAT HE SHOULD STOP DESTROYING THOSE UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP BECAUSE OF GAIN. ENOUGH OF THIS OSTRICH ATTITUDE. LET THE YOUTHS AND THE PEOPLE OF IBENO NOT GIVE-UP UNTIL JUSTICE IS DONE WITH PROPER COMPENSATION.
