Factions In Southern Kaduna Feud Over Deputy Governor
A source within the Kaduna Government House has told SaharaReporters that a dispute had broken out between younger and older politicians from Southern Kaduna over the choice of a deputy governor.
The source disclosed that the youthful elements accused the older ones, led by Major-General Zamani Lekwot (rtd), a former military governor, of seeking to impose an elderly candidate as the new deputy governor. The youths want the post to go to a younger man, just like the new governor, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, who is 44 years old.
A source disclosed that the old brigade politicians in Kaduna are planning to present several older candidates. Among the prospects are Mr. Nuhu Way, a former Minister of State for Power, Mr. Nuhu Bajoga, a state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP, Senator Isaiah Balat, Ms. Charity Shekari, and Mr. Abokie Galadima.
“The youths are kicking against the nomination of any politician,” said our source. “They’re insisting that the next deputy governor must be within the age bracket of the new governor.”
SaharaReporters obtained a copy of a letter written to Governor Yero by the Coalition of Southern Kaduna Youths Fora, a youth group. Dated December 19, 2012, the letter was signed by Vincent Bodam and Shalulu Bonet, and copied to President Goodluck Jonathan.
The letter is reproduced below:
COALITION OF SOUTHERN KADUNA YOUTH FORA
19 December, 2012
Alh. (Dr) Mukhtar Ramallan Yero
Executive Governor of Kaduna State
Sir Kashim Ibrahim House
OUR STAND AND NOMINATION OF THE DEPUTY GOVERNOR OF KADUNA STATE
The identity, independence, and freedom of Southern Kaduna pre-dates the British Colonial era. As a collective with shared history, the Southern Kaduna man and woman is equal to any person – anywhere in the world. We are a people who have risen above board and conspicuously made a mark in all fields of human endeavor. This was further buttressed by the style of leadership your late Principal, Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa (CON) to His Excellency Ramalan Yero. H.E Yakowa left a credible legacy that will be referred to a turning point in the history of Kaduna State in years to come.
We have noted the heinous manner the politics of selection of the Deputy Governor of the State has taken. The process is shrouded in hypocrisy and complete secrecy without consultation and respect of those the decision will directly affect. His Excellency Ramalan Yero without concern and respect for the Southern Kaduna people has perpetuated the process to make political gains.
While the process lingers, we keep hearing the voice of Jacob but the hands of Esau i.e. the unwarranted meddlesomeness and manipulation of the Vice president Namadi Sambo. This is perplexing because the Vice president should be performing at the national stage not meddling in politics of the state he is not even popular with the mandate givers.
As living democrats and people with a long egalitarian tradition, we out rightly reject any nomination from any quarters that is contrary to the yearning and aspiration of the Southern Kaduna people. We have found it imperative, to clearly state, in unequivocal term that our nominees for the Deputy Governor are as follows:
1. Mark Jacob Nzamah (Esq)
2. Rev. Joseph John Hayab
3. Hon. Jonathan Asake
Anything consideration outside these nominations (which is a true reflection of our people) will not be accepted by the youths and people of Southern Kaduna. We shall actively, suddenly and massively oppose and reject anything short of this. Similarly, we shall not accept selection of anybody above the 50 years to this position. We are resolved to ensure a peaceful co-existence and extend our hands of friendship to the new Governor and his administration, if we are seen as equal stakeholders who worked hard for the victory of the party in 2011. As a people, we have suffered from representatives who lack knowledge of our plight and working of system despite the quantum of our investment in the democratic process and the ruling party, since 1999.
In view of the foregoing, we request a quick and immediate selection of one of the names presented herein. And we wish to state that the cream of gerontocrats shuttling and forwarding names as candidates are on solipsist move for personal political and economic aggrandizement. Thus, we can no longer be battered for dogs or lost at card in the political space of Kaduna State.
