FCT Minister ‘Temporarily’ Suspends Ban Green Mini Buses In Abuja

By SaharaReporters, New York

The FCT Administration has suspended the ban on the use of green mini-buses within the Federal Capital City, Abuja for three weeks.

The FCT Minister, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed gave a counter instruction after meeting with the stakeholders including the officials of the Mini-Buses Union, FCT chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) respectively in addition with the FCT Police Commissioner as well as Director, Department of State Security on Wednesday in his office at Area 11, Garki I District, Abuja.

The Minister then directed the setting up of a Committee to be chaired by the FCT Permanent Secretary, Engr. Anthony Ozodinobi to fine-tune its implementation.

All the stakeholders including the FCT Chapters of the NLC/TUC respectively, the Police, VIO, FRSC, and member of a Civil Society Organization are being represented on the implementation Committee.

Senator Mohammed insisted that there is no going back on the policy as it is for the good of all the residents of the Federal Capital Territory.

He announced that other transportation related policy including but not limited to Carmart, Car Wash and illegal Motor Parks scattered in and around the Federal Capital City already banned will also be enforced.

The minister concluded by lamenting that even the FCT Park-and-Pay policy had faced similar challenges but added that the enforcement of such measures are the only solution to sanitizing  the transportation sector at the Federal Capital Territory.

unbanning of the banned buses

please instead of banning the buses, they should be told to stop putting extra sits! so that tall people like us will see where to put their legs, thanks.

GOOD POLICY WHICH SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED THE SOONER THE BETTER!!!

Thumbs up to the FCT Minister for this bold step! The behaviour of the Mini buses otherwise known as Araba are no different from the motorcycles (Achaba) that were plying the city centre before their ban. The Minister should try and provide enough buses to satisfy the needs of commuters.
It is really a welcome development because these mini buses are more or less a nuisance as they are the cause of unnecessary traffic jam in such areas as wuse market, berger bus, area one bus stops. Aside that, if you really want to know the meaning of lawlessness and indiscipline, just take a look at the behaviour of the mini bus drivers.
Mr Minister, this is a step in the right direction because it will certainly be good riddance to the Mini buses!!

ANOTHER U-TURN: GOOD POLICY, BAD EXECUTION!

I just wonder why our politicians across the nation (north, south, east or west) only seem to pronounce policies before they think it through. When the peoples resisitive reaction stares them in the face, they 'suspend indefinitely' such oppresssive policies. Not only their fault: they are surrounded by bootlicking-advisers and technocrats and a docile polIty who are only looking for their own opportunity to feather their nests and milk the nation's treasury dry. When will this nation stop the 'one step forward, two steps backwards' style of governance? Mchew!!!

The Policy is bad and anti- humanity

This is nothing but arrant nonsense. Is there any city in the world where they ban people from working or carrying out their daily activities. Rather than outright ban of buses, try and put in place a mechanism to regulate their activities within the city. Do you have the data of buses that are plying the city on daily basis? Register them and ensure they are road worthy. Have you thought of the aftermath effect of rendering thousands of drivers and conductors jobless without any alternative for them to make daily money to take care of their families? Am afraid, you are not sanitising FCT but indirectly legalising armed robbery, stealing, pick pocket and kidnapping which will be the outcome of this policy. .

Maybe the Minister wants to

Maybe the Minister wants to import the beasts of burden (horses and camel) from his home state as a replacement to the mini buses

The devil you know............

Yes! The buses cause a lot of nuisance but have they found an alternative for their livelihood? Most of them are graduates who became self employed. The masses! Does anybody consider them at all? In the days past,f Nigeria and its laws are known to go back and forth but now all we do is swing from side to side. The so called big autmco buses won't they bully and squish cars with their sizes? Are they suppose to be plying small roads and routes with such a bus as large as that? Let us call a spade a spade they don chop money them wan justify the money them chop! Kowe!

BAN ONLY THE DIRTY BUSES

Please Sen. Bala, I will strongly advice that the buses that are neat both in and out should be allowed to ply the road while the dirty and any one with accident by the side should be totally banned.
This will make the drivers behave normally as they are very reckless on the roads.
This will will checkmate them and there will be sanity on our road.
The Big buses (red or otherwise) should not be exempted.

Think Twice

In as much as I hate those mini buses, they have to provide alternatives. They have to create better rail way system and provide larger buses so that we will have fewer buses and the poor people will not suffer.

If possible, form parnerships with transportation companies as to eradicate touts that have just been driving for only 3 months.

Also enforce proper driving education on cormercial drivers on traffic rules and check their vision etc.

Why?

Those mini van drivers are murderers. Just a few weeks ago, one fell asleep while driving and ran into 3 cars and a lamp post killing 3 people including an infant. They drive rough(most drivers in abuja do) but the mini bus drivers are hell bent on destroying the city. Why is the FCT back pedalling on policy. They should have thought it out properly before announcing the ban. I cannot wait to have a complete ban on those dirty vehicles. Then the taxi system will have to be revamped.

Biscuit Brain!

The policy may be good but definitely not in Nigeria now. You ought to have alternatives like rail lines etc. Also, you make sure unemployment is reduced. What the policy has done in Nigeria is to alienate the common people. It is a way of saying that the city centre belongs to them while the masses should remain in the hinterland. The park & pay policy he referred to targeted the middle class & the very rich, hence opposition to it was mild. It is not as if it is a success. People are grudgingly paying. As for the common man who is already down & fears no all, his resistance will be stiff & determined. That is th scenario that played out, Mr. Minister!
