Fire Engulfs Shell Oil spill Site in Niger Delta

Fire broke out on earlier today on the Okordia/Rumuekpe oil pipeline in Nigeria's Niger Delta region affecting oil production, but the blaze has since been put out, says Shell.
The fire on the pipeline in Ikarama, Bayelsa State, started a day after the company received reports of an oil spill there and was still burning as at 1.45 Nigerian time spokesman Precious Okolobo said by telephone.
"Shell Petroleum Development Company confirmed reports of a fire incident this morning on the Okordia/Rumuekpe line and mobilized a fire-fighting team to the site.
"Some production has been shut down ... We can't give detailed figures on that," he said. "A joint investigation planned for tomorrow will determine the cause and impact."
He later added that "the fire has reportedly burned out ... but production will stay shut off until and investigation and repairs are carried out."
Environmentally devastating oil spills are common in the creeks and rivers of Niger Delta region.
A UNEP report released recently confirmed the pollution of Ogoni land and by extension the Niger Delta by shell and recommended clean up of the community which have yet to commence.
The community led a protest two days ago to River State Government under the auspices of Movement for Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP).
MOSOP leader Leedum Mittee criticized the federal government for failure to take any steps since the report was submitted to it in August.

Ladies and gentlemen, throughout the Niger Delta area wherever you see any village, town, or city beginning with the letter 'R' ignore that R. It is a deception perpetrated by Hausa Fulani Yoruba corrupt politicians to disfigure Igbo identities in original Igbo places. Often you see Rumuekpe, Rumukwrushi, Rumuola, Rumumasi, Rumu this, Rumu that. Ignore the R, the true name starts with Umu. Umu means the same thing in Yoruba language as Omo. To change Omo to Romo is the height of corruption. You would ask me why did the Deltans go along with the change. The answer is the people had no choice, they are still under the coercion of the military, e.g JTF.
