Former House Speaker, Bankole, Expected In Court Within 24 Hours
In an unusual burst of activism, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has indicated its intention to charge the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, to court within the next 24 hours.
The commission's spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, in a telephone interview with SaharaReporters, said the embattled former representative is still being interrogated on the corruption issues in which he is allegedly involved, following which he will be formally charged taken to court.
''You know he was arrested late yesterday night. So by this night it will make 24 hours,'' Mr Babafemi said. ''He is still being interrogated. From here most likely he will be taken to court.''
The EFCC arrested Mr. Bankole on Sunday night. Corrupt Nigerian officials, especially of the ruling party, are rarely taken to court. When they are, they are rarely efficiently prosecuted in order to let them benefit from legal technicalities. They are then conveniently let off to enjoy their loot and become even more powerful.
Only last week, former Edo State Governor, Lucky Igbinedion, who was facing a second round of corruption charges in a court, was sent home by the trial judge who claimed Igbinedion was being re-tried on previous charges. The EFCC has stated that the charges were different, and indicated it will appeal the ruling.
Also last week, the House tendered an unreserved apology to its former Speaker and Bankole's predecessor, Patricia Etteh and lifted all forms of indictments which led to her removal from office in October 2007. In that year, Etteh and Deputy Speaker Babangida Igoroje, were removed from their positions following allegations of appropriation of the sum of N628 million meant for renovation and furnishing of their official residences without the chamber’s approval.
In a late-breaking development, SaharaReporters has learned that Mr. Bankole's home is now being searched for evidence following a warrant granted by a court. In addition, three of Mr. Bankole's aides: Morgan Omodu, Michael Ekepeyong and Adenekan Gbadebo are being sought by the EFCC. Gbadebo is the son of the Deji of Akure.
Arrange !!!
This is an arrange;OBG,GEJ,CFCC & the tribunals /courts know wettin den dey do. Bankole will soon fall sick one morning to go to hospital house arrest for say 1 or 2 months & case close OKpari!!!!
Why the hurry Efcc?
And the EFCC wants us to believe that they have made intensive investigation and gather enough evidences to bring this high profile thief to justice? Or is this one of those shabby jobs to enable him to be freed by the Corrupt Judicial System?
Who is Fooling who?
These bunch of idiots think they are fooling us. Nigeria is just an unfortunate Country having all these stupid people as leaders. There is no democracy in Nigeria anyway. I am waiting for somebody to come out and tell which of these people elected or rigged into power is clean. None. I really don't know how much a man need to have to last him a life time. Money, money and money. Look at our so called president and his wife. Look at the way this woman in particular is draging the whole nation into mud with her expression on NTA. Is it a must that she must speak? God help Nigeria. Revolution is on its way in Nigeria. Looters, keep on looting. The judgement day is almost here. I rest my case...
unfortunate
It's that the so called leaders will take Nigerians for granted

NOTHING GO HAPPEN TO BANKOLE.
NOTHING GO HAPPEN TO BANKOLE. HE IS ONLY UNDERGOING HIS CANNONIZATION AS A CERTIFIED CROOK; AFTERWHICH, HE WILL GO ON BAIL TO ENJOY HIS LOOT - PART OF WHICH IS ALREADY IN FARIDA WAZIRI, OBJ, RIMGIM AND PDP POCKETS.
THIS IS A NATION OF LILY LIVERED FELLOWS WHO ONLY WRITE ARTICLES, ENGAGE IN PHONE-IN PROGRAMMES AND SEAT BACK IN THEIR HOMES MUSSING AND DYING OF FAILED BUSINESSES, DEBT EVERYWHERE AND NO FUNDS FROM BANKS TO RUN THEIR BUSINESS.
THERE IS NO HOPE FOR THIS NATION, WE ARE ALL GRADUALLY BECOMING CORRUPT IN OUR BID TO SURVIVE THE HARSH REALITIES OF THE TIMES.
MY FELLOW CHRISTIANS KEEP TELLING ME THAT WE ARE PRAYING AND THINGS WOULD CHANGE. MY QUESTION, IS IT WHEN ALL THE PIUS PEOPLE HAVE JOINED THE BAND WAGON?
I WONDER WHICH NATION WOULD VOTE FOR THIS COUNTRY OF THIEVES TO SECURE A PERMANENT SEAT IN THE UN?
It's a Fluke
It's just political gimmick. Why not probe Senate expenses. EFCC is trying to impress us fpr nothing. Why not wait to let us see if the poor man will run and we shall all know that he did what they say he did. Abeg, we don't by into this foolish idiosyncracy

SCAPE GOAT!
Unfortuntely, this guy is their sacrificial lamb, just as Ibori, Balogun and Alamaseigawas in OBJ's regime. Nigeria does not need this kind of 'scapegoating' defence mechanism. We Nigeria and Nigerians need is spring cleaning. Why single out few individuals. Bankole is one out many rogues in government.
ADENEKAN GBADEBO
Guys, Nekan is the son of the Alake, not that of the Deji Of Akure. The surname should have given him away!
Nigerian Judiciary must do more
I'm not suprised that most comments here are skeptical of the war against corruption but i think we're mis-directing our anger. The work of the EFCC is to receive petitions, investigate, arrest and charge to court. EFCC cannot convict neither can it jail these monsters. Only the courts can do this. It's unfortunate that these bad guys are using their loot to compromise some judges to stall or delay prosecution. The EFCC hav consistently cried out for special courts or any other judicial reforms to fast track prosecution but unfortunately no one is listening. Most of the high profile prosecutions are delayed or stalled in courts.
We must direct our anger to the judiciary. The Judiciary as an independent arm of govt must wake up,enlist in the war against corruption and save our country from this free fall.
This has gone on long enough
This has gone on long enough.enough of watching while those treasury looters who go about bickering on useless and absolutely non beneficial legislature robb us blind.this is ridiculous.these people should be accountable to the people.how do u justify increment of an already outrageous allowance from N45mill to N60mill per quarter per person in a nation that is claimin not to b able to afford the peanuts proposed as minimum wage.Nigerians we cant keep silent anymore.please lend ur voices and raise suggestions.if we remain silent then we are as guilty as they are.No human is god and one way or the other these people must be held accountable.NIGERIANS,THE BALL IS IN OUR COURT AND THE TIME TO GET UP AND ACT IS NOW!LET US SAY NO ONCE AND FOR ALL-NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES.
He has a case to answer
$1billion dollar misappropriation allegation is really very grievous in a nation where millions are unemployed and industries are shutting down. These issues must be thoroughly investigated by the EFCC and if the funds are real, they must be recovered and invested in the econnomy to empower Nigerian businesses and professionals.
The Odds
The pain in these issues is when a corrupt leader is arrested for corruption, you hear people saying things like why him? The arrest was politically motivated, his sins are not up to that of the other fellow that was not arrested e.t.c. Now, the question is, should Bankole be left to go because Lucky Igbenedion was allowed to go or should he be released because some faction are of the opinion that Obasanjo influenced his arrest? Whatever the reason, when an offender is caught, he or she should be made to face the full wrath of the law. That way, our country will be better for it. God save Nigeria.
1,000 count charge against the rogue
There are many count charges against the rogue bank-ole,#2.3billion car scam,9billion naira, constituency allowances, emolument, bank loan etc.EFCC,we want to see conclusion of your probe.not that you will be playing to the gallery.
ARRESTING HIM IS NOT ENOUGH
EFCC SHOULD INVOKE ALL NECESSARY PROVISIONS IN ITS ACT TO BRING ALL CORRUPT PUBLIC OFFICER HOLDERS TO BOOK. ENOUGH OF ANNOUNCEMENT OF ARRESTS, NIGERIANS AND THE WHOLE WORLD IS LOOKING RESULTS.
Bankole crisis of honour
I have over the years express my deep feeling that to curtail corruption and encourage uprightness in governance corruption cases in Nigeria must carry capital punishment. It is a total miscarriage of justice to engage in plea bargaining for a man who consciouly steal with the intent that he has immunity cum impunity to probing and therefore he can do and undo, he may at his majesty appropriate the nation budget to whatever pleases his emirate without impunity, to stop this rascally behaviour let there be death sentence by hanging to corrupt officials. My honurable Justice Oyewole the ball is in your court you have proven your incorruptibility and firmness in the face of dubious and powerful cult of corrupt fellows please help us.
one way Nigeria
The only thing that will change this attitude of corupt practices in Nigeria is death penalty.2-3 months for the trial process and 4th month for execution if found guilty of corupt pratices.
no,no,nooooooooo
The treatment BG got in prison 20 million Nigerian did not get that as free people in the Nigeria society.
U ar part of them, who is a
U ar part of them, who is a poor man? Is it BANKOLE? U dont know what u ar saying
EFCC, JUST CONTINUE!
All I know is that some few years back, nobody would have dared to arrrest someone in Bankole's position. All the thieves in the military who stole biliions were never made to account for anything. That was the mistake Bode George made. He thought he could continue looting as he did when he was Governor, but he miscalculated. The EFCC are at least doing the right thing in justifying their existence. They cannot arrest and prosecute EVERYONE at the same time. Where is the human & material resources to do that? But at least they are responding to some petitions against the alleged corrupt politicians. Hopefully this will deter some potential pen-robbers and save the country some billions. EFCC just carry on, pls. Harrass and prosecute them as much as you can. Even if the Courts do not help you by relasing some of thm, just see that you perform to the best of your ability.
EFCC Theater
This is drama and senseless show-boating for public consumption. EFCC is playing to the American audience. Where is Ikedi Ohakim, Gbenga Daniel? They were on their "watch list" before April 29th. Kaka! As long as that woman is running that agency, nothing good will ever come from the efcc. Watch them set him free (even after trying to flee)after Gejilla returns from the White House, on grounds that fraud is "Bailable Offence". Afterall, the man that argued most passionately for the loans has now been elected Speaker.
read btw d lines
This dimeji matter is pure politics. dimeji is against 7yr single term for jo. the whole house shared d 10bn loot. a 37man committee adopted the loan. provision for d repayment of d loan in 2011 budget signd by jo. senate has more loan than rep,why nt investgate. nafada presided and nt dimeji ova loan. al dirty politics.
this madness must stop
Pls efcc shuold make d bastard of egbaland a scape goat so that it will serve as a deterrent to others who want to engage in criminal activities and also all his co-travellers must not be spared too like tambuwal, ikedioha etc
STILL ON BANKOLE...WHATS ALL THE THEATER ABOUT?
NIGERIANS HAVE GONE THROUGH THIS TYPE OF CHARADE MANY MANY TIMES BEFORE. EFCC WILL PERHAPS CHARGE BANKOLE TO COURT, THE COURT WILL GRANT HIM BAIL AND NOTHING ELSE WILL HAPPEN. SOME MAY BE FOOLED SOMETIMES BUT NOT ALL WILL BE FOOLED ALL THE TIME....
Dimeji's Ordeal.
Wao.....is this the same EFCC? The enthusiasm and efficiency demonstrated by this "sleepy" body is reminiscent of the Ribadu days. Did they have to wait for Dimeji to vacate office before arresting him? I thought that our constitution only grants immunity to the President & the VP, the Governors and Deputies. I think madam Waziri is on a revenge mission. That interview with the former US envoy which rubbished the EFCC must have hurt the body so badly. I wonder why Dimeji with so much stacked up against him (at this stage it is all allegations)continued to open his mouth so wide. Obviously the young man has a lot to learn from the real thieves: the Uduaghans, Iboris, Igbinedions etc. In any case, "I dey watch una..o!!"
Blame the System of of government we operate and not .........
Not the Parliamentarians, not the Speaker, not the Senator and not even the President or his VP is to blame for this serve-your-self system of government
in Nigeria. A Culture of corruption is embedded in all that we inherited from past Military govts. This is the more reason, apart from ethnic and religious disunities, why a Sovereign National Conference is needed for a people's constitution and for restructuring impositions . Any measure that excludes SNC adds more Biodgas to the system fertilizing Abuja to be the worst corruption capital of the world.
Umu Oke- Germany.
What do you call two armed robbers?
