(Reuters) - French special forces have detained Ivory Coast's Laurent Gbagbo and handed him to leaders of the rebel opposition, after French tanks forced their way into his residence, a Gbagbo adviser in France said.

"Gbagbo has been arrested by French special forces in his residence and has been handed over to the rebel leaders," adviser Toussaint Alain told Reuters.

A French foreign ministry source could not immediately confirm that French forces had detained Gbagbo. "We have no evidence that can confirm that," the source said.

Earlier on Monday a column of more than 30 armored vehicles advanced toward Gbagbo's residence in Abidjan, a witness told Reuters, and Alain said they had penetrated the building.

"It's French forces taking in the rebels," he said. "French special forces are inside the residence."

Do Nigerian political leaders carry Cameroonian passports while in the service of Nigeria?

Hahaha, France want dash C

Hahaha, France want dash C Voire cash, whose money is it anyway, Francophone Africa only gets 20% of all their earnings and the rest is in france which is in turn given as loans to them(Africans) on interest. If they need their own cash, they must fight and sweat and give a billion reasons which are mostly rejected. Where is the central bank of the CFA region? France of course!!! Are these guys dumb or what? Wake up Africa and take your place. We have lost too much and still losing. We will resist sit tight heads of state or presidents but we should not be deprived of our best brains and disgraced.

Dear Mr. Anonymous or whoever

Dear Mr. Anonymous or whoever you are.
You are dead wrong stating that "Nigerians are stupid".
here are over 130million people who hail from this country and you do not have a moral right to make such atteration. This forum was not set up to slander people. Grow up please.
We Nigerians will not let our leaders go that route and I condemn the Gbagbo choice. Ivory Coast has an opportunity to rebuild.

Great things are happening again in Africa..Africa arise..take your place..

Gbagbo should go to jail

Why do Africa dictators want to die in power? The dictator lost election and instead of bowing out gracefully, he threw his country into anarchy! They should cut him in pieces and feed it to the dogs! Afterall, he had caused the death of many by his greedy act!

Nigerians are stupid

You always think of neo-colonialism and forgot that our leaders are criminals. Gbagbo lost an election and refuse to go out, take for instance the coming election in your country and Buhari being declared winner and after 2 days the election officer will announce Jonathan as the winner. This is the case of Ivory Coast. You all will sit there and watch your leaders steal and oppress you yet you only make noise on sahara reporters. Charles Taylor started like that and today he created harvoc in Liberia and S/leone.

Enough said for now.

Anyway, I hope that at some point we will all take our history seriously and let past events guide our decisions. I personally would never support anything that has the French involvement. They mean no good and anywhere they go there's bound to be trouble. Rather than be here arguing with each other all the time, try spend sometime reading about African histories and see why it is not wise to wish for Europeans to come back. Which of the places that France is fully enmeshed is free? Is it Cameroon? Togo? burkina Faso?

This is a common trend, they put a stooge in power, build a base in the country through which they control the president from Paris, corrupt the government with some ridiculous sharing formula and the people are the worse for it.
Read on the political issues in Madagascar for the last 2 years.
Please also read about the French mercenary called Bob Denard and his escapades in the nation of Comoros.

HI

So u want the International Community to sidon look till Gbagbo finish all the civlians in his country. Well! this world has advanced more than that.

@sokka please let us start

Please go and read about King Leopold I and Congo. Read about Soweto. Then go and study the trade deals between France and her colonies. Then read about CIV from 1993 when Houphouët-Boigny died till now.

How would you feel if you heard today that the land that Aso Rock is built upon belongs to the British and we've been paying millions of dollars per year in rent since independence?

How would you feel if you found out that GEJ's heritage is Cameroonian, that he grew in Cameroon, went to study abroad with a Cameroonian passport, and worked for the world bank as a Cameroonian... and now he's fighting to be president with help of mercenaries from Cameroon?

How would you feel if South Korea offered to build refineries and CHARGE us $2/ barrel refined and France offered to do same but PAY us $2/barrel for the same deal and then caused an uprising and install a stooge that will let them have their way just because we refused?

These are no fictions.

Sorry to say this, he ruled

Sorry to say this, he ruled the country for 2 years, then spent the next 8 years fighting an uprising that was planned in France.

@Oyewon,

"In as much as I will not support neo-colonialism, it is welcomed if it will serve the good purpose of rescuing the helpless majority from their oppressor."

Unfortunately, history has shown us that such interventions are never transparent and have ulterior motives. It will only replace the outgoing so called devil with a worse devil. It's like discreetly asking a crooked policeman help you retrieved dollars from 419 that's just duped you, you may now end up losing both money and freedom or, worse still, life.

Do you think Dr Atta Mills of Ghana was stupid when he said we should let them resolve the issue themselves? How many people were killed for June 12 which we handled all by ourselves?

@SOCRATES

Gbagbo did try to do something, he tried to free his country from the grasp of France's paternalistic relationship with her "ex"-colonies, that's why he's in trouble. The ones that don't do anything but let France loot their countries: the Biyas; Bongos; Gnassigbes; are the ones ruling forever uninterrupted.

WHATEVER GOES UP MUST COME DOWN

What so ever goes up must surely come down,African leaders are to selfish and greedy.

All Africas wars are incited,

All Africas wars are incited, and sponsored by the west for gain. while the war is on the access our rich resources and the few pieces we collect are labeled blood oil or diamonds.Africa can never know peace until we undo the classical conditioning of pro west mentality.Africa can never do well in leadership unless we open our eyes to the reality of western foistered agents as presidents who are used and dumped at will. Africa will never know peace until the multinationals are all divested of majority western shareholding. The wars are fought for the benefit of the multinationals. The planes from the vietnam war was a good reason for the war after which new airlines sprung up. Maybe a chocolate factory in Paris is about closing down for lack of raw material is enough reason to enter I Coast and turn the tables.

LAURENT GBAGBOS ARREST

ITS UNFORTUNATE FOR GBAGBO,I THINK HE SHOULD UNDERGO SOME MENTAL SCRUTINY,HOW CAN A SO CALL LEADER STAY AND ENJOYING HIMSELF WHILE INNOCENT CITIZENS ARE KILLED IN THOUSANDS ON THE STREETS

Gbabo

I feel so sad that Africa has been so deminished to this level. Imagine what the french can do. No matter what Gbabo did, He did not deserve what he got. He fought the fight that African leaders are really scared to fight. The whites are still controlling us. I really felt like crying when isaw those pictures uploaded. Shame on Cot d'vour forces. Michael

Gbagbo deserves all that

Gbagbo sure deserved what he got, but the implications of what france did will show its full face within the shortest possible time. Un said ouatarra group killed more than 400 people too, will ouatarra be tried now or after handing over power in some 10 years time. If he play ball with france which he is likely to, will they still try him after serving his term as president? Can the blood of those that died and crying for justice wait for 10 years? There are many questions begging for answers,

I hope people commenting here

I hope people commenting here can see the new phase and dimension which international politics is heading to.That Africa is being subjugated to a new phase of hegemonic emperialism. First it was the trans-atlantic slave trade, then there was the Berlin conference which gave birth to colonialism and with America now priding itself as the only hegemonic power( after the collapse of USSR,now very boke) backed by an economic distraught European countries. They have re-strategise another new way to emasculate weak, vulnerable and visionless countries around the world, especially in Africa for their economic sustainance. I will never support rulers like Gbagbo not because of their sit tight syndrome but they sit tight and do nothing, no vision. But that does not give European powers the right or audacity to intervene in the affairs of this nations and install whoever they feel in their eyes "won an election."

Ouatara was sponsored by

Ouatara was sponsored by FRANCE AND NOT installed by France too.. more cheap cocoa from Ivory coast will continue to go to FRANCE for the French chocolate industry.... POOR IVORY COAST. It is a shame...

Africa has to wake up!!

In as much as I condemn the die hard attitude and the killings carried out by Gbagbo and of course Ouattara, I will, in the same way urge us all to look in-dept to unravel the role played by the west - especially France. Why should Africa be a place used by these imperialist countries to show-off power? Why do we Africans allow these people to treat us as if we don't know the right thing to do? I really felt bad watching Mrs. Clinton issuing warning on the TV to African leaders as if we Africans are idiots. Can Africa send troops or give sanctions to any of these countries? Let us wake up and defend our right to independence!!

You are yet to understand the

You are yet to understand the politics behind it. This Gbagbo who is rather fighting for the total independence of Ivory Coast from France and here is France struggling to make sure they continue to master . What is FRANCE DOING IN IVORY COAST? Why was it not the USA ? Why must if be France in every African country that speak french ? AND why wars there ? It is neo-colonialism and the very few people fighting against it are being crushed by FRANCE using the gimmick of democracy which is based of majority rule where the poor and senseless populace is manipulated by FRANCE using French based stooges to deceive the ignorant people.... Why did they refuse to recount the result ? And if they really love the people of Ivory Coast why did they no do it peacefully by simply cancelling the election and doing it again ? It is a big shame that Europe would continue to handle Africa this way for a long time to come. They are your GODS....

Gbagbo deserves all that

Gbagbo deserves all that comes hisway as he has refused to see reason and look at the interest of his nation and people. The critical fact that needs to be addressed must also be looked at. The killings of innocent individuals by the forces of Gbagbo and Quattarra must be looked at and punished according. France will only serve its interest but never the interest of the nation. Africans need to wake up to the reality that imperial and colonial masters never has our interest. It isalways about them. I wish the people of Cote D'Ivoire well. Settle scores and join hands to build your nation.

Abiola Came Before His Time

We missed the opportunity of seeing IBB/Abacha's dirty singlets just because Abiola's time came prematurely and the world ignored Nigeria

Despots always meet a reuful end

Thanks for your very good and incisive peice. Those who refuse peaceful change make forceful change an inevitable option. This is the usual end of all despots and all those who abuse the power given to them by their people and use same to oppress and intimdate them instead of working to improve their lives. Our leaders in Nigeria should read the handwriting on the wall, gauge the currents of happenings around the rest of Africa and take the honourable high road instead of ending their rulership in ignominy.

Now that They have installed

Now that They have installed their favourite, lets wait and see. We remember Mobutu was used against his people and freedom fighters and many others that were used and dumped. What happens to the colonial pact and unnecessary french interventionist tendencies in francophone west Africa.

end of a dictator

shame to this dictator......imagine sweating inside a 5 star hotel rooom....nemesis
