Nigeria's pastors run multi-million dollar businesses which rival that of oil tycoons, a Nigerian blogger who has researched the issue has told the BBC.

Mfonobong Nsehe, who blogs for Forbes business magazine, says pastors own businesses from hotels to fast-food chains.

"Preaching is big business. It's almost as profitable as the oil business," he said.

The joint wealth of five pastors was at least $200m (£121m), he said.

Mr Nsehe said the richest of them, Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith World Outreach Ministry, was worth about $150m.

Bishop Oyedepo owned a publishing company, university, an elite private school, four jets and homes in London and the United States, according to Mr Nsehe.

'Private jets'

The Nigerian blogger said Bishop Oyedepo was followed on the rich list by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of the Believers' Loveworld Ministries. He was worth between $30 and $50m.

"Oyakhilome's diversified interests include newspapers, magazines, a local television station, a record label, satellite TV, hotels and extensive real estate," Mr Nsehe said.

He said three of the other richest pastors were:

    Temitope Joshua Matthew of the Synagogue Church Of All Nations (worth between $10m and $15m);
Matthew Ashimolowo of Kingsway International Christian Centre (worth between $6 million and $10 million) and
Chris Okotie of the Household of God Church (worth between $3 million and $10 million).

Mr Nsehe said representatives of all the clergymen, except Pastor Ashimolowo, confirmed ownership of the assets he had listed on his blog.

"These pastors are flamboyant. You see them with private jets and expensive cars. This extravagance sends out the wrong message to their followers," he told the BBC's Network Africa programme.

He said the pastors acquired their wealth from various sources, including their congregations.

"We have Nigerians who are desperate, looking for solutions to their problems. They go to church for salvation, redemption and healing and pastors sometimes take advantage of them," Mr Nsehe said.

God is good, especially if you’re a Nigerian pastor with some business savvy. These days, millions of souls, desperate for financial breakthroughs, miracles and healing, all rush to the church for redemption. And while the bible expressly states that salvation is free, at times it comes with a cost: offerings, tithes, gifts to spiritual leaders, and a directive to buy literature and other products created by men of God.

It's God's blessing

No one can have any thing unless it is given him by God.If one is blessed to the tune of $150 million, that great! To God be the Glory. To critics, what is their net worth?

Talking about wealth of

Talking about wealth of Gospel Ministers, why d murmuring?some of these Pastors are not failure in their various field and professions. If they left their circular job to work for God I shouldn't expect them to b failures or poor people. What do expect?an intelligent person who diligently pursue a cause for 30 years should be able to live inheritance for his children's children. If any one thinks becoming a Pastor is easy or career to pursue let him do and stay on the job for 30 years.Don't forget that most these pastors also use of opportunities available to them in different Nations to improve on their finances. The bible says, see a man diligent in his ways,he shall sit with kings and not mean men.Don't get worked up about their blessings, get connected and you'll b on ur way to a great futune in God's presence. Finally,we u're blessed enough,it can't b hidden. It must manifest!

Barons of God

judge not that ye may not be judged abi. can u tell me how many of the pastors started. how many were businessmen before they went into pastoral work.....the bible forewarned about false prophet. perhaps we are seeing them now. signs of endtime

Lets us be careful...

We should bear in mind that it is nt right to critize, condemn and judge from afar....

Be careful...

Sometimes we need to be careful so that we do NOT critizise, condemn or judge based on our own personal sentiments... If a man of GOD establishes a business and it prospers... why condemn him!

Judging or Discerning

The bereans checked what they were told by searching scripture(Acts 17:11; 1 Thess 5:21..Test all things; In Rev Chpts 2 and 3, Jesus himself told us to resist some teachings and doctrines(Nicolaitans, Balaam and Jezebel). Spiritual believers judge things (1 Cor 2:15). Finally discern/judge using God's own words and warning Matt 6:19-21, Matt 25:31-46. Dont give foolishly, you will not be blessed for it(Prov 22:16).

Which Bible? Fleecing the flock is blessed?

Matt 6:19-21; Matt 25:31-46; 1 Tim 6:6-11, 2 Pet 2:3; 2 Cor 2:17

Are we reading the same Bible?

Matt Chpts 5-7(Matt 6:19-21); Matt 25:31-46; Luke 12:15-21; Prov 28:27; 1 Tim 6:6-11. Warning to the giver: Prov 22:16. What's the point claiming to be Christian if we are not following Christ?

God is not poor, but..

He is angry and will judge greed; many of these dont follow Matt 6:19 or the whole sermon on the mount(Matt Chpts 5-7), and though they live in the midst of the poor and suffering, exploit these. God is also not mocked; many will be surprised when Jesus returns(Matt 25:31-46). In all, follow Christ, not man.

Following Jesus?

You all judge with God's word..Matt Chapters 5-7(matt 6:19); Matt Chapter 24.

My BISHOP is worth more than meagre $150m

Our God is not poor

My BISHOP is worth more than meagre $150m

Dear mfon the researcher go n do your home work well before u get sued

blessing

God has put them in the right places, there is no need to curse or say unworthy things about them because your pastor isn't here dosent mean you can't be think far am a 14 year old boy born in the lord think wisely don't curse GODs own people ...

In the beginning God...

In the beginning God... Instead of focusing on and discussing anyone else's pocket money, let every man check one's own life first! Are you sure to make heaven? If it pleases God to elevate someone, then why not? He who created and owns heaven and earth can allow any human being to have $10 million, and far beyond. What will we say on the day of judgment; that Pastor had $10 million? Better repent of all sins, and leave it for God to judge! In wrath, let Him remember mercy!

they deserve it

if being a man of God is a business, thats the hardest business i have ever known, they deserve what they have. a labourer is worthy of wages.

Josh....u r just talking

Josh....u r just talking rubbish. Go to these churches and find out wat is done there. do u know hw many ppl ve been helped financialy, d sick recieve their healing tru d power of God, dead r been raised, barreness broken, marriages restored, all manner of testimonies. Education is not cheap, even in public schools, covenant university is ranked by NUC as d best university in Nigeria

Are These Their Personal Worth or That of Their Organisations?

Anyone can chase news and conclude the findings with a personal opinion.

What this blogger has not told us is if this is the personal networth of personalities or of the organisations they lead.

These people have laboured for many years from being obscure with their ministries making life better for others.

I believe you consider it a virtue for the them to be hopping from cab to cab in town in the name of being humble.

Check their credentials with their people and you will find out that the worth you describe is from the the contribution of those they taught to live the godly life and who are committed to to their benefactors.Jesus, when he was on earth was supported by those he preached to and taught.

Those who preach the gospel, according to the Bible, live also by it (by the support they receive).

If these ones have been sold our to accumulation of personal riches, you have have more to report. What. These are not Dangote who owned all the assets. They have only grown their churches and invested today's excess fund to build further capacities for their future operations. They organise outreaches without taking offerings from in many of such meetings.

Oyedepo stopped earning salary as a pastor, when his earning was less that N1000 to through that make his own contribution to the building project of his church. If he makes money from the books he wrote, how does that become a problem to the public; whereas he does not even collect royalties.

The assets you are estimating are owned by the their church organiisations.

If the capacity of these churhes have been built up over the years and they can afford certain tools for their operations, that still does not overrule the fact of their personal and organisational benevolence to the indigents around their organisation.

As an educated person, I believe you are not teaching them to start feeding evryone on the street, even those who do not want to work, and thereby create economis glut.

Some of them receive as birthday gifts what they can never use (imagine tens of autos for one man's birthday); we know they do not greedily retain these for personal use, but pass them over to others.

They pass no wrong signal to their followers, unless you have chronicled such complaints.

Nigerian should be wise

I do not blame pastors extorting money from followers all in the name of God but I only think it's the high Nigerian get wise because salvation and deliverance should be made free

PRAISE GOD

i am very glad to note that my Bishop is classified as the richest Man of God in Nigeria. That means that the divine mandate from God to get back home and make Gods people rich is working. I want the author of the article to note that God is just starting with the Bishop. may be this additional info will let you know that LFC is Gods place for prosperity. It is the only commission that has 2 full fledged universities in Nigeria and even beyond. It has the largest single church auditorium that sits 50,000 and is recorded in the Guinness Book of records. Can you tell me if Jesus was a poor man?The gate of hell cannot prevail.

The richest pastors

The problem with most believers is that they don't want to learn of God. the God we serve is a God that is more interested in our prosperity more than we our self's. The bible says those that honor me i will honor, and we should not also forget that honor goes with riches and glory so what are we talking about the church of God is marching forward in prosperity and nothing shall stop it.

hi people

is it not beta to own a company than to pay for the services of another? Or even being regulated by the policies of another company? I like the investment of these men of God. It only makes it easier to run church activities.so stop criticising them.. If u any one is so angry, open ur own company or school and creat more jobs

just be wise and not a judge

Waoh!MEN of different mindsets and understanding, you have all spoken well via this medium, but this shows the indepth of our minds and reasonings. In all these issues let us not forget that concience plays a very big role in determing what we do and how we exbits them.REMEMBER....do not judge so you will not be judged also.WHO are you to question sGOD'S blessing that giveth joy and peace and sorrow.PLS be informed that these MEN of GOD started somewhere but because they followed every principle of the CREATOR'S word which says that weeping may tarry in the nite while joy cometh in the morning, they are in there in their morning, while not work hard to enjoy the fruit of your labour than dying in criticising the aboundant blessings and destiny of GOD in people.....be blessed

sell all and follow jesus

for that rich man to enter heaven in the bible, jesus christ advised him to sell all his property and follow him. he was sad (cos he worked so hard for the money) and jesus saw this so jesus said 'it will be difficult for the rich man to enter the kingdom of GOD'. he continued and added that 'A CAMEL WILL ENTER THE EYE OF A NEEDLE BEFORE A RICH MAN ENTERS THE KINGDOM OF GOD. jesus was all about the hereafter and not this life or money, our pastors should start making him their role model.

Think about it

Let us all remember our God is a faithful God and he has bless everyone of us in christaindon, all believers the bible say will are the light of the world.ln christaindom none of us are suppose to be poor so why the investment? one day we all will go back to where we come from let us all think about it, read the of Malachi3vs 1-end God bless.
