INEC De-registers 28 Political Parties, Including PRP, NAP, FRESH

By SaharaReporters, New York

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday night de-registered 28 political parties.

They include Fresh Democratic Party, which was the brainchild of Pastor Chris Okotie; and Nigeria Advance Party, which was started by lawyer and businessman, Tunji Braithwaite, in the Second Republic.

Also notable on the list was the Second Republic’s powerful People’s Redemption Party, which in 1979 won Kaduna and Kano States from a rampaging National Party of Nigeria, the forerunner of today’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to a statement by INEC just a short while ago, the action is an exercise of the Commission’s powers based on the I999 Constitution as amended and the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

The delisted parties are:

1.  African Liberation Party (ALP)
2.  Action Party of Nigeria (APN)
3.  African Political System (APS)
4.  Better Nigeria Progressive Party (BNPP)
5.  Congress for Democratic Change (CDC)
6.  Community Party of Nigeria (CPN)
7.  Democratic Peoples Alliance (DPA)
8.  Freedom Party of Nigeria (FPN)
9.  Fresh Democratic Party (FDP)
10.   Hope Democratic Party (HDP)
11.   Justice Party (JP)
12.   Liberal Democratic Party of Nigeria (LDPN)
13.   Movement for Democracy and Justice (MDJ)
14.   Movement for the Restoration and Defence of Democracy (MRDD)
15.   Nigeria Advanced Party (NAP)
16.   New Democrats (ND)
17.   National Majority Democratic Party (NMDP)
18.   National Movement of Progressive Party (NMPP)
19.   National Reformation Party (NRP)
20.   National Solidarity Democratic Party (NSDP)
21.   Progressive Action Congress (PAC)
22.   Peoples Mandate Party (PMP)
23.   Peoples Progressive Party (PPP)
24.   Peoples Redemption Party (PRP)
25.   People’s Salvation Party (PSP)
26.   Republican Party of Nigeria (RPN)
27.   United National Party for Development (UNPD)
28.   United Nigeria Peoples Party (UNPP)

"The Commission hereby reiterates its commitment to relating with political parties in accordance with extant laws and for the benefit of our electoral democracy," the statement said.

Pastor Okotie has run for the presidency three times on the platform of FRESH, insisting he is the change that Nigerians desire.

Days before the 2011 presidential election, he said, “There is nothing that PDP can do for this country. It’s abundantly clear that PDP has become politically irrelevant in the sense that they have not been able to proffer solutions to problems that beset our people.

None of the parties could be reached tonight to get their comments to the sudden de-registration in the middle of the night, and what their political options are.

Right step in the right direction

This action is long overdue as these so-called political parties without discernible ideological bases only existed to share tax-payers money.
They have failed to fulfil conditions necessary for their continued existence, hence they have lost relevance and should be sent into extinction!

INEC De-registers 28 political parties.

INEC decision is coming at a time when some tribunal cases resulting from the 2011 elections are still pending. In some states for example, there are high & supreme court cases challenging the INEC decision to decare the results of elections. The problem here is that the decision of the court may cancel the results of some of these elections; requiring all parties including the De-registered parties to participate in a re-run.If it is necessary to De-register any party, INEC should have waited until all pending cases are finalized. Personally, I don't believe that the number of parties has much to do with the political problems in the country. The political system in Nigeria is structurally and fundamentally faulty, and the political will to enforce the electoral laws are lacking.

FOUR POLITICAL PARTIES ( ANPP, CPC, ACN AND PDP ARE OK.

THESE FOUR POLITICAL PARTIES ANPP, ACN, CPC, AND PDP ARE OK FOR OUR COUNTRY AND FOR CLEAN DEMOCRACY. THE 28 DE-REGISRERED POLITICAL PARTIES SHOULD FIND WITHIN THESE FOUR PARTIES THOSE WITH IDENTICAL IDEOLOGIES AND MERGE WITH THEM PERIOD.
ANY OTHER MUSHROOM POLITICAL PARTY IS JUST A WASTE OF TIME AND RESOURCES.

de-registration

It is welcome in positive direction the system of multiple parties in Nigeria is an avenue for electro malpractices in this our country
I will suggest that the system of only two parties should be adopted here in Nigeria to assist INEC in its effort for cheating

political party

MAY THE POLITICAL SOUL OF THE DEREGISTERED PARTIES REST IN PERFECT PEACE, R.I.P

Good News

That is the best news i have ever heard from Nigeria, For our democracy to survived i think we need not less than 4 political parties so that their will be strong opposition party because without strong opposition party democracy means nothing.
Kudos to Inec i wish you will De-register more...

WE NEED TWO PARTY SYSTEM

I would have preferred INEC to institutionalize two party system for Nigeria. Of course, I know this is beyond INEC. I want a situation where the opposition will be so strong that a ruling party will sit up to meet the yearnings of Nigerians.

Gud job inec

Its a new day for our politics. God bless you Mr Jega.

More votes for remaining parties to...

More votes for remaining parties to share come 2015. I commend INEC for this action. We still more irrelevent parties to. I guess we still have about 22 partirs left. I humbly urge INEC to delist more based on the law. ENOUGH OF AN OVERBLOATED PARTY SYSTEM.

Add more!

These are Niteclubs not political parties, more need to be deregistered, infact it shold b reduced to 4 - PDP, ACN, LP and CPC.

They can all now go back home

Good, they can all now go back to their party PDP, especially that CDC clown mr edozie madu

it is good to de-register them

Inec did a great job for de-registering all this so called political parties. They are good for nothing. They did not even win any seat both in the house of assembly and house of rep. They are there to steal money from inec because they are called a political bullshit. PDP,ANPP and ACN are they only parties we recognise. They are there only to get whatever they can get from the government.Inec is doing a great job just like the fuel subsidy scandal.Nigeria government is doing a great job.All i believe is we shall get there by his grace. We all should be praying for President Jonathan for his wonderful work his doing for Nigeria.

What of PDP

INEC could have deregistered PDP also so we can be free from them and have rest (lol). By 2015 God's willing they Nigerians will "deregister" them at the pool.

OUR DEMOCRACY, INEC AND PARTY REGISTRATION

Good start. We need only two to three Parties for a viable democracy.Advance countries have found accommodation with this and why not Nigeria. There ought to be enabling law to entrench this and by next ten years we will start to reap the dividends. Any body not contained with this can leave town or country. Thanks Jega for the bold and forward-looking effort.
