Jonathan Administration Sabotages UNN Conference In Honor of Achebe

Prof. Chinua Achebe

President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration has sabotaged an international conference and lecture series designed to honor Professor Chinua Achebe, one of the world’s leading novelists and a major voice for the Nigerian people in their quest for a just, democratic order.

Sources in Nsukka and Abuja told SaharaReporters that the University of Nigeria International Conference/Chinua Achebe Annual Lectures had to be postponed to April after the Jonathan administration not only suddenly reneged on its pledge of financial support but also pulled away from participating.

The conference organizers had earlier secured the commitment of the administration that President Jonathan or his representative would be available to kick off the conference which was scheduled for January 30 to February 3, 2012. Until the government’s decision to pull out, a presidential aide, Akachukwu Nwankpo, had been acting as Jonathan’s liaison to the organizers.

“The University of Nigeria Nsukka is too cash-strapped to fund a conference of the scope that we planned,” an official of the university where Professor Achebe used to teach disclosed. He added: “The moment the president’s liaison told us that they would not provide the funds they had promised, we had no other option than to postpone.”

In addition to scholars from Nigeria and other parts of the world, the French ambassador to Nigeria was also scheduled to speak at the now aborted conference.

Achebe, the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, reportedly incurred the wrath of the presidency when he released a three-sentence letter he sent to Mr. Jonathan rejecting the award of a national honor. More recently, Professor Achebe, who is putting finishing touches to a major non-fiction book, denounced the Nigerian government’s unpopular decision to sharply increase the price of fuel.

SaharaReporters learnt that Mr. Nwankpo recently made it clear to officials of UNN that the Jonathan administration was no longer keen on providing financial support for the conference or participating.

Reached by phone, one of the would-be participants said he was “thoroughly distressed” by the Presidency’s action. “Look, as an academic before he went into politics, President Jonathan should understand that critics like our revered Professor Achebe are his best friends. They criticize him because they want him to succeed. His real enemies are those advising him to alienate himself from the generality of Nigerians.”

He added: “The government’s decision to pull out is not going to affect Achebe who already is a giant in the literary and intellectual world. Instead, it is our premier indigenous university – which is a shadow of its former self due to severe funding shortages – that is being punished.”

An EU diplomatic source told SaharaReporters that Achebe “is one of Nigeria’s greatest symbols whose writing has earned acclaim and followership globally.”

A source close to Professor Achebe told SaharaReporters that the novelist had not planned to be physically present at the Nsukka but was going to send a message.

DONT U READ, THE LECTURE IS NOT ACHEBE'S PROJECT. DUMMY.

GEJ Pulls out of Achebe's Conference

I think issues should be critically examined, analysed and confirmed before comments are made. Such cases as the one at hand should call for certain considerations such as: Why did Govt. pull out of the participation and sponsorship after it had been agreed upon positively. I do not want to believe that Govt. pulled out of the Conference out of anger. There must be some salient reasons which should I think investigation should be thoroughly done before making derogatory comments such as the ones made by some correspondents. Thank U.

Achebe Conference

Mr Anonymous,

Why on earth would you loose your respect for Achebe for a conference UNN in its merited decision and wisdom wants to organize. It shows total lack of appreciation of issues.
UNN can organize a thousand conferences in honour of Achebe. Achebe has right to accept or reject an award like he rightly did and there is nothing anyone can do it. Achebe does not need respect of people like You who do not simple sense to understand issues of public affairs.

Take Care

chinua achebe should go and stare at brushes and trees.

he is not serious so he expects the Govt to still fund his so called UNN project after insulting the Nigerian Govt by refusing a national honor, he must be joking, and somebody still has the audacity to say d govt is dis or dat, I've Neva been a supporter of badluck jonathan, but i surport dis move, dat chinua achebe is a huge hypocrite, he go dey for America dey complain say Nigeria no good, what has he even done for dis country, na to dey write village prose, make he go hug transformer, d man just lost every single respect i had for him prior to my reading this news.

people dont like truth

If Achebe were †̥ be one of the socalled
Cabals the fed would have sponsored two
times. However, Achebe i̶̲̥̅̊s an alreadily
honoured person, Ȋ̝̊̅† should be a honour for
the FED †̥ be a part. promises are broken
by cowards.

Continuation

a selfless leader but no he was just the opposite. I am not against his govt but I believe that Jonathan can do without govt salaries for the rest of his tenure if he was that child that did not wear shoes to school he should be able to make such sacrifices for those that are still not wearing shoes since nowhere does not not only have shoes but goes out more than 5 wheels behind him. So let us all be realistic the presidential task is not an easy one but there are certain things that a leader can do that makes a whole lot of his follower to give their support. So let the govt not because of shortages deprive the nation of good things while they are still enjoying every bit of it. And let organization also look for other ways of generating fund within their reach and not rely on our inconsistent govt. GOG BLESS NIGERIA? Amen

Hey wait a sec why did the

Hey wait a sec why did the govt pledged to fund the project in the first place and later on backed off, don't u think there is something fishy.what this project need is not upto what GEJ & co will use for there Birthday celebration or on a useless trip, though we need to cut down on govt spending but should we now deprive our students and lecturers opportunities that benefits them academically? If the govt wants to cut down on their spendings, they should be able to cut down very reasonable amount of money from their salaries starting with the president himself we all thought he was going to be

Joe, you got it all wrong

Joe, you got it all wrong. The conference is not Achebe's project and he's got nothing to benefit from it. Achebe is an accomplished man already that have earned the respect of every right thinking Nigerian. The conference is a UNN project aimed at entrenching the tenets of good governance and advancing the Nigerian course. If anybody stands to earn ,it is the UNN, academics and the Nigerian society. Need i remind you that UNN does not belong to Achebe? You must be literate; you've got access to the internet, let us not allow sentiments cloud our sense of reasoning.

Promise and fail.

What do you expect from the man who promised more times than I can remember t5hat “I will not let you (Nigerians) down”. What with Boko Haram, Fuel price hike, tenure elongation, brazen corruption and all. I blame UNN for relying on their promise.

Its ashame on the government

Its ashame on the government side

cause he did not support subsidy removal fa

So Achebe rejected the

So Achebe rejected the national honour offer but was ready to accept funding of his UNN project, right? If this is not hypocricy, I wonder what else.

I think that it is time that

I think that it is time that Nigerians decide what they want. Change is not just about activity but about a mindset. Someone said that Achebe should not have refused a national award; that it was bad form. When will we learn that what is wrong is wrong and stop making excuses. A consummate professional, a hard working man declined to accept an award that has been denigrated. Look at the company he was in. Yet some say accept for the sake of accepting. If you are against corruption, you must be against it in totality. It is not rocket science. There comes a time that you say NO!!!

CORRECTION! ACHEBE NEVER WENT

CORRECTION!

ACHEBE NEVER WENT TO GEJ TO BEG FOR MONEY TO BANKROLL A COLLOQIUM IN HIS HONOUR.

EARLIER BEFOR THE SPAT BETWEEN ACHEBE AND THE GOVERNMENT OVER NATIONAL HONOURS,THE ARTS FACULTY/UNN AUTHORITIES HAD THE PROGRAM IN THE PIPELINE.

OBVIOUSLY, THEY SOLOCITED FOR FUNDS AND THE GOVERNMENT PLEDGED TO BE PART OF IT.

NOW THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAS RENEGED, ACHEBE CAN NOT BE SAID TO HAVE BEGGED GEJ FOR MONEY FOR ANYTHING.

LET US ALWAYS PUT ISSUES IN PROPER PERSPECTIVE FOR MEANINGFUL EXCHANGES.

LOOK INWARDS

Please, leave the President out of this blame. The Presidency is wrong in withdrawing its earlier commitment, yet, the UNN I know can, and should resort to the Alumni, and well-meaning Nigerians. The States in the South-East can equally take up this novel idea.

@ Stanley Igwe

Bros, you are still missing the point. I guess this is where people like Tundemash and perhaps Wähala have issues with you.

Listen to yourself "...but shame on the organisers who let him down by seeking financial assistance from Jonathan." From Jonathan, haba! Appears you are not getting it, let me try again. The monies involved do NOT belong to Jonathan. The conference though honours Achebe but at the end of the day extends the boundaries of knowledge and Nigeria will be the better for it.

Refusing to be a co-sponsor is like a man cutting his nose in order to spite his face. Have I communicated?

please read carefully before u write nonsense

Pls re read the report very well n correct
ur blunders, UNN sort funding of their
Conference from the fed govt n Jonathan
Refused support after agreeing initially.
So pls leave the professor, he wasn't even
Going to attend personally but rep.

In my Opinion

In my opinion, if I were to honor someone and they treated it the way Achebe did, I wouldn't sponsor such an activity myself.
But on the other hand, Achebe is already honored around the world from his literary works, he doesn't need more honor from more people and the Nigerian government. Plus as a professor at a University in Rhodes Island, he has a job and is taking his job seriously so please let him be.
Also, if Johnathan is doing this as an action to stop the unnecessary government spending, then I will say good job. But if na because of vex, then that one no good O.
Then again, Nigerian Universities should learn to seek other ways of funding. Everything shouldn't be government all the time. A big and rigid Uni like UNN should be able to handle this with ease. Abeg make we cut govt spending.

UNN please look inwards

I am not happy that Jonathan pulled out state support for this - I imagine it is not the birthday party of one of his aides/minister's girlfriends.

But, the UNN, like most Nigerian universities, should equally be blamed for making a real mess of harnessing alumni strength. An institution like UNN should be able to reach out to alumni all over the world (I am one, and could have spared at least my $20 lunch for this cause if contacted) and fund projects like this without the need to lick the ass of corrupt politicians. This should be more dignifying to Achebe.

UNN revamp your office of Alumni relations - someone is sleeping in that office and taking index-linked pensions.

Irresponsible govt

What do you expect from this govt? Accident of history, a man who told us he has no shoe and school bag turns around to punish nigerians. Achebe was right to reject the national award. An award that is meant for criminals.

Why Fed?

Why couldn,t the person of Achebe's caliber raise more than enough private funds in Nigeria? Where are the alumni? In addition, start being creative by striving to raise funds from the community. But can the community trust you with the funds? That way you won't be broke?

It was extreme bad form for

It was extreme bad form for Achebe to reject a national honour given by the Jonathan administration. If the national honour is beneath him, then Nigerian (Presidency under Jonathan) funds should be beneath him as well.

toyin adekunle you are a fool

Why do you expect the federal govt to fund a private conference? Not long ago we were on the streets complaining of wastages in govt and now you turn round to open your dirty mouth and use your leprous hand to complain about govt refusal to fund this conference. Are there no corporate firms and wealthy individuals in this country to honour this icon? Why must we all depend on govt to wipe our noses.

@Deri

Totally agree fanned and faved .x2 . You are spot on.

re:Na wa oo

"I think the government has made a responsible decision by pulling out of the programme" Really? I disagree. you don't pull out after making a commitment. That is lack of integrity! Pure and simple. That shows the king of government that we have.
you asked;" What benefit will such a conference bring to Nigeria?" I ask; "What benefit has all the money spent on pilgrimage brought to Nigeria? Intellectual poverty does not allow people to reason beyond their nose.
I totally agree with you that the organizers can raise funds elsewhere. Whatever funds needed for this conference is not close to one-tenth of the security vote of some state governor yet their is insecurity everywhere.

The saboteurs

Jonathan has demeaned himself once again. The man has shown that he has no character of an intellectual despite his acclaimed PhD. Professor Chinua Achebe represents one of the best Nigeria has ever produced, a giant, an erudite scholar and globally acclaimed writer. He does not need any recognition from shallow minded government headed by a clueless, ineffective and inefficient president called Jonathan before his greatness can be measured. Professor Achebe's exploits and life achievents tower above and higher than that of Jonathan in all ramifications. Therefore he neither requires any recognition nor national honours that have become the exclusive preserve for those that have stolen and amassed the wealth of this nation for their personal use

Jonathan, the pdp Dr ?

is joe actually literate enough to lead Nigeria out of pDp gang of the Nigerian nation mmonsters?
Achebe lives like God to me and other insane nigerian national who understood the birth of nigeria for His name sake. For it's known well that we live for precious name Mohammed like Jesus-Isah is not denied but how do we both represent this issue of Identity, when Babylon the trouble maker/shooter strive to exist on divide and rule game of Micro cheap?
Blessed are those who dot not partaker in Human degradation when opportune with course of leadership and example !

Adioye or whatever you are

Adioye or whatever you are known by, and the honor is . . . . fool!

its complex thing

and it was also said that Pesident jonathan was a scholar?
