LEADERSHIP Publisher Sam Nda-Isaiah A Conman, Says Yobe Governor Ibrahim Gaidam

By SaharaReporters, New York

Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has dismissed the publisher of LEADERSHIP Newspapers, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, as a conman hiding under the umbrella of journalism to extort money from, and blackmail Nigerians who refuse to advertise with him.

Mr. Gaidam, who made the claim in a strongly-worded protest letter he caused to be circulated around the country and published in several dailies today, threatened to take action against Nda-Isaiah if he continues in his unethical practices.

“He has committed grave ethical infractions that strike at the very core of the integrity of journalism,” the governor said of the publisher, adding that Nda-Isaiah’s brand of journalism will expose the profession to ridicule.  “The publisher has decided on a deliberate editorial policy to fabricate lies against us, ridicule our institutions, pillory our achievements and maliciously libel our functionaries all because we refused to yield to his unceasing demand for advertisement patronage. Recently, he has invested enormous editorial energies to malign and lie against the government and people of Yobe state - he is likely to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.”

The governor cited an incident this month in which the newspaper published an editorial attacking the State government, followed by a personal comment in Mrs. Nda-Isaiah’s column that he attributed to his having refused to place advertisements in Leadership.

Mr. Gaidam also offered a 2008 example of conflict between the government and Leadership concerning a N10 million payment to the newspaper for the publication of special supplements.

“This followed Nda-Isaiah’s visit to Damaturu where he met our late governor, Senator Mamman Ali,” the governor’s complaint said.  “But the project did not even go half-way when the governor passed on. Leadership stopped the supplements following Governor Mamman Ali’s death and to date there is no explanation on this or a refund of the balance of the money collected.  This, however, did not stop us from placing adverts in the paper whenever we saw the need to do so. But on almost all occasions we have had reason not to patronize the paper; we never fail to receive harassing calls from Nda-Isaiah or some members of his staff.”

He said his government recognizes the media’s responsibility to alert it to its duties, which is why it does not regard all negative stories about his administration as a declaration of hostility or as a slight on individuals.

The governor further said: “Some negative stories can be constructive and redemptive.  But there is a world of difference between critical journalism and blackmail journalism. It is blackmail journalism when a publisher abuses the privilege of his medium to traduce and manufacture lies against people simply because they refused to place adverts in his or her news medium.”

Having made his case, Mr. Gaidam urged the public to discountenance any future insults or campaign of disinformation against the Yobe government or its officials that Leadership may engage in, as there is more to what the newspaper writes than meets the eye.

Excerpts from Governor Gaidam’s Letter:
“We are writing to call public’s attention to the disturbingly unethical practices of Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, publisher and chairman of Abuja-based Leadership newspaper. Since November 2011, we have been victims of Nda-Isaiah’s blackmail. He has committed grave ethical infractions that strike at the very core of the integrity of journalism. We feel obligated to state the facts because we are concerned that Nda-Isaiah’s brand of journalism will expose the profession to ridicule. The publisher has decided on a deliberate editorial policy to fabricate lies against us, ridicule our institutions, pillory our achievements and maliciously libel our functionaries all because we refused to yield to his unceasing demand for advertisement patronage. Recently, he has invested enormous editorial energies to malign and lie against the government and people of Yobe state - he is likely to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

“In one week, Leadership wrote an editorial titled “Yobe and the Murder of Korean Doctors” on February 13, 2013 where it tendentiously accused Yobe state governor of being responsible for the regrettably cold-blooded murder of three Korean doctors in our state (about which the security agencies with the support of the state government are working tirelessly to unravel). We wrote a rejoinder (in Daily Trust, Blueprint, People’s Daily and The Nation on February 15, 2013) calling attention to the untruth of the editorial’s claims and pointing out the many inaccuracies that informed its conclusions. A few days after our rejoinder, Nda-Isaiah again dedicated his personal column, under the title “Yobe Governor Should Be Held Responsible for This” (February 18, 2013), to hurl coarse invectives and repeat the same false statements against us. He called the governor a “sadist” and his media adviser a “thuggish underling,” among other unsavoury insults. That is clearly beyond the pale.

“So, why is Nda-Isaiah so fixated on Yobe state and its officials? Well, it is because we have had occasions to spurn his entreaties for advertisement patronage, and he seems unwilling to accept the fact that it is absolutely our decision to choose which media to patronise with our advertisements. As a state government, we do place advertisement in the media from time to time. We do so because we think it is the best way to record our achievements and inform our people at home and elsewhere about our programmes, projects and policies. In doing this, we are guided by the imperatives of availability of funds and the reach and relevance of the media we patronize. We have in the past had occasion to place advertisements in Leadership when we thought it was appropriate to do so.

“For instance, in late 2008, Yobe state government paid ten million naira to Leadership to publish special supplements on the state. This followed Nda-Isaiah’s visit to Damaturu where he met our late governor, Senator Mamman Ali. But the project did not even go half-way when the governor passed on. Leadership stopped the supplements following Governor Mamman Ali’s death and to date there is no explanation on this or a refund of the balance of the money collected. This, however, did not stop us from placing adverts in the paper whenever we saw the need to do so. But on almost all occasions we have had reason not to patronize the paper; we never fail to receive harassing calls from Nda-Isaiah or some members of his staff.

“As a government, we recognise the media’s responsibility to alert us to our duties. That is why, as a policy, we do not regard all negative stories about our administration as declarations of hostility or as slight on our persons. Some negative stories can be constructive and redemptive. But there is a world of difference between critical journalism and blackmail journalism. It is blackmail journalism when a publisher abuses the privilege of his medium to traduce and manufacture lies against people simply because they refused to place adverts in his or her news medium.

“Of course, we recognise the importance of advertisement to the survival of the news media. As a government accountable to God and the people, we spread our adverts as best we can within the resources available and the possibilities of local consumption. There are many national dailies which are happy to receive adverts from us but would never resort to blackmail if they did not. The relationship between advertiser and medium must necessarily be based on trust, not blackmail, coercion or extortion.

“With the foregoing, we believe the people of Yobe state and Nigerians who have followed the bizarre and unbelievable saga between Leadership and the Yobe state government are now better informed about the context in which the newspaper picks and targets the state government and its officials in an unfair and unprofessional manner. We, therefore, ask the public to discountenance any future insults or campaign of disinformation against the Yobe government or its officials that Leadership may engage in. Anyone who sees such libellous material from the newspaper should recall the above historical background and know that there is more to what the newspaper writes than meets the eye.”

Philip famously grumbled that he was the only man in the UK whose children would be able to take their father's name.So is the umbrella, which features duck and hound animal head handles.

Sam Nda, this is pretty heavy

Sam Nda, this is pretty heavy accusation against you just as it runs totally against the image you have created for your self over the years. Being quiet at this time would indicate acquiescence. On the other hand, it will not be surprising if Geidam turns out to be right for have we not seen this before with turn coat Rueben Abati?

I do not know much about this governor. He does not feature amongst the more vigorous governors in the troubled and dysfunctional North. As someone had already alluded to, which governor is really clean in Nigeria today? Extended further, which of our governors can put their hand on the BIble or Koran or a broom or whatever the god worshipers use as a sacred object of their worship, to declare that they genuinely and honestly serve the people?

Geidam is a truant as the

Geidam is a truant as the state governor. Because of fear of being kill by his political foot soldiers (BOKO HARAM)he refused to be in the state. Let him pay the money because he cannot use the media and dump them.

Yobe Gov is not in the state

Yobe Gov is not in the state presently for close to a month. Mr Ndah is the 'Voice of the Voicelles' last week he wrote same things about mr president. The media assistant(bego) pls feare Allah, speak the truth, be objective, you are a young man that alot of ppl admire. we are watching as things unfould in yobe...

Sam Ndah Isaiah is a criminal

I am glad someone is finally exposing Sam. I don't support Yobe Government. They are all the same--criminals. But we all know governors are criminals. what we don't discuss often is that journalists like Sam Ndah-Isaiah and Nduka Obaigbena are even worse criminals. They blackmail people to make money. I know so much about Ndah-Isaiah's criminal activities in the name of journalism. That guy should be in prison. Every Monday, he writes pretentious pieces that make him look like a fighter for the common man, but he is a crook, a first-class criminal. Let's expose them all. Thank God for Sahara Reporters!

be careful my friend. Think

be careful my friend. Think before you talk

Geidam

All what Ndah isia said about Yobe are correct, am from that part of a country. At the moment the Gov is not in yobe for almost 1month. The so- called rejoinder was written by the Gov media assistant. Pls mr Gov fear Allah and correct your mistakes....

Shame on you, Nda Isaiah the Scammer

This is the way the cookies crumbles. Cash and carry media outfit. Shame on you, arrogant parvenu.

Journalist -Another Name For Conmen In Nigeria

We do not need Governor Geidam to tell us that those so-called journalists in Nigeria are conmen per excellence. It is a well know fact that people establish media houses in Nigeria as an instrument of blackmail. They are all accesory to the continuos rape of that unfortunate nation called Nigeria

Sue, Not Arrest Him

If the Yobe state Government feels libeled, they should sue Leadership Newspapers.

It's that simple.

They should stop harrasing and arresting Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah.

Thats what democracy is all about.

The Rule of law.

Pot calling kettle black?

While I do not doubt the governor's claim that the publisher of leadership newspaper is a fraud, I believe that the only antedote against such dubious people or blackmail journalism as the governor calls it, is an open and transparent government with nothing to hide. If he is doing the right thing, it will be there for everybody to see.

Wayo Governor!!

I read the column of Sam Nda Isiah of Leadership newspapers concerning the Yobe state Governor. I am only surprised that the Governor refused to refute the allegations. The allegations were enough to throw the Governor out of the state house but this is Nigeria where human lives don’t matter. It was alleged that the Governor doesn’t live in Yobe state, infact he operates the state from Abuja. It was also alledged the his deputy and the secretary have long abandoned the state yet they are all in charge. Mr Governor the question is this: Can someone come to Damaturu and check on you? Yes or No? Take sam to court if you felt he is a scam. Yaradua tried to do same but what happened? Wayo wayo!!!

I don't understand why a

I don't understand why a state government should use millions to publicise their good works! The state governor is not using his father's money to do these projects, state funds are being used so why must he beat his chest and bring out drums as if he has done the impossible. You are just doing your job, Governor Gaidam. The fact that most elected officials think they are doing their constituents a favour by actually doing what they were voted to do is so annoying.

I always have a tremendous

I always have a tremendous respect for Nda-Isaiah's opinion on matters of national importance in his every Monday's column. I read this allegations as advertorial by Yobe State Government in many newspapers and now online.

Please Nda, respond in your coming Monday's column and convince us with facts that this allegations are fabrications of a 'failed state' or failed governor. If not this will make you loose many readers.

UNINTELLIGENT POLITICIANS OF NIGERIA!

Nigerian politicians have very low intelligence all of them right from the dummy in Abuja to the grassroots lizards. This governor is sad because something very bad about his government has been exposed instead of taking Leadership to court he resorted journalism blackmailing. All what he has mentioned have not been escorted with the facts only mentioned them in retaliatory tones. It is simple that if one has evidences of being cheated by someone he/she should take the matter to court, because it's a criminal issue. Our politicians have overturned the TRUE ideologies of democracy due to their selfish interests. This governor is total rubbish.

I was expecting the Yobe

I was expecting the Yobe state Government to dispute the claims of Leadership Publisher. am not in a position to hold brief for Mr Sam but I read the publication about yobe state governor. What the Governor write here is more of blackmail than rejoinder. Mr Sam claimed the governor abandoned the state to the mercy of BH and some white men in the state are providing health services without the governor providing adequate security for them. But here the Governor is writing about advertisement, no single mention of Mr Sam claims, so who is blackmail who. HEY MR GOVERNOR PLEASE GET SEROIUS FOR ONCE.

ALL THE CONMEN

Sam Nda-Isaiah Nduka Obeigbena and all the other so called "publishers" are wheeler dealers and not journalist.

They use their papers to line their pockets only. The LEADERSHIP was receiving 25 million Naira Monthly from Madu Sheriff as PR money to give him good press. All the heinous atrocities of the governor were not reported.

It's high time the governors call these rogues' bluff.

Let us hear, Gov Giadam

If the newspaper libel against you or your government, I think the best option is to seek redress in law court and not to be shouting this way...you are disturbing our peace.

Nda-Isaiah and his staff

This not news at all. It is common knowledge that Sam and most members of his outfit are all scammers and this is what obtained in most of the Nigeria'as media houses. The guy is stinkingly corrupt, through and through. One wonders why EFCC failed to arrest the irresponsible scammers garbed as journalists!

I Have No Sympathy For Both.....

While i do not have any iota of sympathy for Mr. Nda-Isaiah and his medium, i also do not have sympathy for the Yobe State government.
In the course of searching for a job, i stumbled into Isaiah's LEADERSHIP as an Advert Executive. My schedule was to prospect and bring back adverts. While on the job, i had two encounters that changed my perception. First was a gentleman i met at the Federal Secretariat Abuja. Can't recall his name now, but i recall he's elderly, and clutches a walking stick.... He claimed to be a journalist. I also recall him saying he was a pioneer staff of the LEADERSHIP. Within the 5 or so minutes we met, he had nothing but very harsh and unsparing words for Mr. Nda-Isaiah. A second incidence was in the ministry of Aviation where a Public Relation officer narrated how Mr. Isaiah shortchanged him over adverts commission. I didn't wait for the third. I scrammed.
Geidam on the other hand, is an arrogant man, especially to non-Muslims who got killed in his state.

Leadership Newspaper Versus Yobe Gov

Nothing new here. But it's a shame to learn the level to which the Nigerian media has degenerated. Ngwa, Mr.Publisher, kindly respond. Most readers are aware Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah's biggest mentor is THISDAY's Obaigbena.Gov. Fashola also had an issue with the latter bordering on blackmail and financial expectations.Add the fact that the present MD of Leadership news/ruse/paper,was the guy disgraced from The Punch as Exec Director Publications, and you will get the picture.THISDAY & LEADERSHIP Awards are two sides of same scamming game by the 4th Estate of the realm.
