Lekki Tolling: Residents Warn Against “Uncontrollable Chaos”, Plan 10,000 March
The announcement by the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) that it would begin collecting tolls on the Lagos Admiralty Plaza from December 18 may not be hitch free, as community leaders are threatening to mobilize over 10,000 aggrieved protesters in 73 estates in Lekki, Etiosa and Ibeju lekki to block the road should the LCC go ahead with the plan.
At a press briefing today at the Ikota Shopping complex in Lagos, representatives of the residents association called on the LCC and the Lagos State Governor not to create what they called “uncontrollable chaos” in Lagos with the planned tolling against the wishes of the people.
Speaking at the event, Bar. Abioye Akerele, the Acting Chairman of the Lekki-Eti-osa-Epe residents Association said, "We are peace loving people and the government should not take our posture for granted. This road that they want to toll has been existing for over twenty years and if LCC came to add an additional lane they cannot insist on tolling the already existing lanes. It is unacceptable that those of us who are from here will have to pay money to enter our ancestral homes. It is totally unacceptable. There are over 73 villages along this axis made up of peasant people; how does government expect them to cope [with] the attendant rise in cost of living that will arise from the tolling?"
Bar. Akerele warned the government of the possible consequences of going ahead with the plan, saying, "We will have no choice than to call out our people to protest this move and we don’t know what that might lead to."
A lawyer and human rights activist, Bar. Ebun Olu Adegboruwa, said the government was toying with the lives of Lagosians and deliberately discriminating against the people of Eti-osa by putting three toll gates in one local government when none exists in other parts of the state where the state government is undertaking development projects. He also accused the government of not being sincere with Lagosians over the construction and tolling of the road and the concession agreement with LCC. "The Lagos State Government in 2005 borrowed $43m from a bank in South Africa for LCC to begin construction of the Lekki-Epe road using lands in that axis as collateral. Why are they now talking about tolling the road as though LCC is using their own money to construct the road?”
In his analysis, he said, "What have the people of Ibeju Lekki done that the governor is talking about tolling the only developmental project that this administration is undertaking here when it is not doing the same thing in other parts of Lagos? I recommend that the tolling should begin from other parts of Lagos like Surulere, Bode Thomas, Adeniran Ogunsanya, and so on."
Bar. Adegboruwa also disclosed that he has already embarked on legal action against the LCC, the Lagos State Government and three others. Unable to get the matter heard at the Lagos State High Court, he took it to the Federal High Court which later referred it back to the Lagos State High Court for hearing. He said that following the announcement of the commencement of tolling, he then filed a restraining order on the LCC, the Lagos State Government and three others from commencing tolling pending the determination of the matters in suit no. CA/L/1170M/2011.
That suit was filed on the December 7 and served on the Lagos State Attorney General on December 8 at 9.40am. The lawyers to the LCC, Aluko and Oyebode of 35 Moloney Way, were served on the December 7 at 3.30pm.
Mr. Adegboruwa urged the parties, particularly the Lagos state governor, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, to respect due process by maintaining the status quo pending the determination of the matters.
The leader of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL), Comrade Debo Adeniran, has also criticized the planned tolling of the road. He described it as "a manifestation of the capitalist mentality of the ACN that will deepen the rift between the rich and the poor."
Mr. Adeniran wondered why any government will want to turn the freedom of movement to an exclusive preserve of the rich by forcing indigenes of those communities to pay whenever they are returning to their ancestral homes.
Dont Say what you dont know
Most of the people saying it is the in thing around the world have either not left the shores of Nigeria or are just agents of the Government.
The M25 is bigger then the Lekki-Epe Express road and it is still under more extensive expansion. so those who do not know should not be quoting what they dont know.
Tolling Lekki-Epe Road is CRIMINAL. It was built on tax payers money. In the UK in the midlands I remember the only toll road which I passed through was a new road constructed afresh and tolled.
Government should stop ABDICATING its responsibility and telling the people to bear the consequences of incompetence.
WE CANT BE FOOLS
ITS NO TOLL GATE AND ITS NO TOLLING.
ELSE LET THEM PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED.
1million man walk
Nothing good comes freeeeee
Had we waited for NITEL (govt) to provide telecom services simply bcos we pay tax, you & I 'll not be on this forum. It took Private Investors to make it happen the way it is now! Today, we can complain of service delivery & Telcom companies are working to improve service. Are you saying this can't apply to our road? By the way, how do you feel when you drive on that road compared to Kingsway road?
I am on the side of development and a working society where things work!!!
i think you should got your
i think you should got your facts right before you start opening your mouth to talk. do you realise that people have been living in that area before the existance of the road and that happens to be their villages and thses people are poor people? is it not the responsibility of the government to ensure that the people have access to their houses? what has the governmnent done for us here, absolutly nothing. there is presently no other road to that whole area and the government is talking about building airport and free trade zone in the area. i think fashola should be bold enough to unwright the wrongs of Tinubu intended to steal directly from the hard earnings of the people
it is okay
I live in Ikorodu and would gladly pay a toll of N500 both ways to get to my office in Ikeja and get back home on time. I spend on the average 3 hours to get home every night due to congestion on the road. If i dont leave early enough i spend about the same time getting to the office. The financial cost alone in terms of fueling and repairs to my car is simply crazy. When you add this to the health implication of setting and sweating in traffic everyday, i would gladly pay toll. So if the lekki pple dont want the toll and the road, can the lagos state govt please bring it to Ikorodu.
LEKKI TOLLING! GOVT ADDED WAY TO PAUPARISE US
It sounds logical from the face of it that we are being provided infrastructure through private participation. We need to ask ourselves whether we have Leaders or Ruinners in this country. While they keep feeding fat on our pains and woes, the masses are being made to further get more and more impoverished and this is another way to further suffer us.We have to pay doubly for every thing. What's the length of the road we are talking about here and how many toll gates are on it?,dont we pay taxes of various kinds, how many small traders ve been sent packing by LASSA. The leadership of this country is indeed very insensitve.
Tolling on Lekki-Epe road is not acceptable please.
REDUCE THE TOLL RATE, ITS RIDICULOUS
Gov. Fashola just played on our intelligence. He got us to vote him in again and then raised the tolling idea again. I can't even see any work the governor has done since he got voted in the second time.
During his first tenure, I was one of his biggest fans but I am really disappointed this time around. I am not against tolling because the road has made life a lot easier for me in terms of less time being spent commuting since the expansion. However, the rates are ridiculous! Anything above 20 naira is unacceptable. Things are so difficult for people generally. The owners of LCC should reduce the rate. It is simply RIDICULOUS!!
when is the march
Pls can i have details for this march its a most attend by me.
RE: Toll is a developmental initiative
You are a joker. How many people in lekki build 150million house? and how many people can afford the N300 (to and fro)biling? please if you can, dont place everyone on your level
LEKKI TOLL GATE
Dear Jaji,
I suspect that you are an official of LASG or the company that owns the rubbish. i also think that you dont reside in Lekki and very much unaware of the situation there.
Residents of the axis are tax payers whose taxes are being used to develope other parts of the state.
Government claim that they spent N4B in one year meaning that in 30 years the company LCC will on the average receive N4b x 30.
i will advise you that if do not understand an issue, kindly keep quiet.
TOLL is a developmental initiative
Gents and Ladies, pls do NOT fall into the trappings of our colletive cultural weakness as Nigerians. The truncation of our cultural growth by COLONIALISM has made us poor thinkers about the future. We are lazy-minded, unanticipatory of future growth and unable to take pain for future and unborn generations. Lagos is no longer a Village settlement BUT now a cosmopolitan trapping. Nigerians are jokers. They build 150 Million naira houses in Lekki but will do aluta to stop the payment of 150 naira toll. The road will be safer, the accrued funds will ensure roads never degrade. Lets tie our faith to market forces and NOT to the poorly funded state govts. Pls pay the toll and move into a regular future. Stop this mental poverty
Where are they now?
P-L-E-A-S-E where are Asiwaju Tinubu's supporters that carried placards to No 10 Downing Street in order to protest, when he was to be put on a trial that never took place? They stood in front of Prime Minister David Cameron's office to shout in London.
A woman said all those trying to put Tinubu in prison would die one by one. Now, what is better, Tinubu in prison or bogus toll charges? They must answer these question o? Must Tinubu feed fat on the poor? He never sleeps with his frog eyes without looking for something to swindle. Ole!
Wicked people,no to toll
Anybody supporting this evil act of the toll lacks the fear of God. When has democracy been for the few.If this is a genuine transaction the government will not have backed LCC with a single kobo and fully guaranteed the loan. If LCC is a genuine private company then the company should take some risks. Don't understand how the government can back a company a hundred percent and people are talking about private investment. The original plan of LCC was to build a new coastal road and toll the road, which would have been acceptable. But when they did their calculation the realized the would not make money and decided to toll an already existing road.wicked people.
You got it right. We should
You got it right. We should toll all newly improved roads in Lagos. We should start with two toll gates at Bourdilon road Ikoyi. I thought we are the smartest of all ethnic groups in Nigera. Wake up we have been deceived by this regime. We have been presented with a painted sepulchre
THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED
Lekki/ Epe Expresswy is the BEST thing that has ever happened in the last 20 years in Lagos. The journey that usually takes 4 hours from Ikoyi to Ajah now takes 30 minutes. It’s the only road in SW that one could feel that the Government is working for the people. Nigerians complain about the Govt, but as a citizen, what are we doing to assist the Government. There are no community efforts. Good infrastructure is human rights; we need good roads, constant light and drinkable water, but, WE MUST BE READY TO PAY. Whoever cannot pay for this fantastic Lekki/Epe expressway, there is a solution, move to other part of Lagos where there are NO TOLL, and NO GOOD ROADS. God Bless Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu for the wisdom and God will continue to Bless Fashola for carrying out the Yoruba Agenda!
WE CREATED THE MONSTER
When we spoke to say that the Tinubu/Fashola was practicing OBT , I was nearly mobbed. Now it is evident that we have been deceived and stolen dry by this hypocritical duo.
Consider a group that collects about N34billion monthly in IGR (forget they tell you it is N22billion) plus the Federal allocation of not less than N6billion, yet claim they cannot improve on a rad constructed by Alhaji Jakande when the total revenue of the state was not up to N1billion. Until you guys wake up these monsters will do worse things to you because as far as they are concerned you have been conquered and cannot question anything.
Ask JK Randle what Fashola did to him for daring to ask questions or the Bull when he asked Tinubu to pay down on the monies borrowed for the phantom ASI project.
Wake up it is called "management by exclusion."
SOFTLY SOFTLY O GOV FASHOLA
We Lagosians love you so much o our dear Gov. pls do not allow your state to be the launching pad for our own Arab Uprising in Nigeria.DO NOT START A RACE YOU KNOW YOU CANNOT FINISH.A word is enough for the wise I REST MY CASE.
CRY THE BELOVED COUNTRY
It is sad that Africa could descend into so much retrogression. When exactly are the PEOPLE of this country going to feature in the calculations of these so called PRIVILEGED FEW?
I sorry for Africa. I sorry for Nigeria and now I sorry for Lagos? The Lekki Axis lacks the following:
- No Pipe-borne water
- No Electricity (very unreliable when it comes)
- No quality Government schools = no education
- No hospitals of repute = no medical/health service
Now the only project done so far is to be funded by the people!!!
The Fashola admin has to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY - there should be an alternative road to the one tolled - this is the practice in civilised communities in the world. DONT TURN US INTO A CAPTIVE MARKET for the looting capitalists - GOVERNOR FASHOLA TAKE NOTE. We shall lay this at YOUR FEET. TINUBU IS NO LONGER GOVERNOR - YOU ARE!!!!!!
Let them try...The dog that
Let them try...The dog that will go astral will not hear it's master's whistle.
You are so ignorant and yet u
You are so ignorant and yet u find it easy to display it. How can u say it is universal...Is it done in d U.S or England. U probably haven't been anywhere outside dis country befrore dats y u could even make such a comment. AS 4 FASHOLA AND TINUBU, GET READY COS U WOULD SOON SEE THE CONSEQUENCES OF ALL UR ACTIONS.
Re Tolls are normal
I have been to different parts of the world where city roads are tolled, and the usage of those tolls are by choice, because there are alternative that run parallel to those roads but in this case those who live in the Lekki axis have no alternative road of getting to their homes.
Tinubu wayo
Please every take note. Tinubu is a director in Hitech. He became one months after his tenure. He thinks Lagosians owe some form of pension and therefore every hand must be on deck to stop this criminality. What have the residents of lekki done to deserve this punitive toll on a road that is at least 25 years old?
RE: TOLLS ARE NORMAL
Yes, tolls are normal in enlightened society, but in such societies, alternative roads are provided for those who do not want to pay toll to ply. Where is the alternative road along the Lekki-Epe corridor???
I also want you to answer the question: "Who owns LCC/Hitech?"
Let me give you an example of an enlightened socity: Between the entire stretch of Glasgow and London in the United Kingdom, there is only one toll road, with alternative roads for those who do not want to pay toll.
Coming to the Lekki toll road, the government has erected two toll roads between V.I. and Ajah with no alternative routes. What is the rationale for this.
WE SHALL NOT PAY A KOBO ON THAT ROAD. FASHOLA SHOULD TELL TINUBU THAT!!!
No Way!
Who are the real owners of LCC ? Former or present Gov ?
Placards with these inscription should hang over our heads: WHO OWNS LCC ?
THIS IS FRAUD OF THE HIGHEST ORDER.
THIS IS ONE MAN DEMOCRACY; THIS IS NOT DEMOCRACY.
NO MORE CONCESSION OF PUBLIC ASSETS.
DOWN WITH ASIWAJU. TOLL OUR FOOT.
PARASITISM OF THE FEW ON THE MAJORITY.
The organizing barristers please take note.
Lekki Toll is in the best interest of the people
it is only in Nigeria that people want the best infrastructures for free, and when government fail to provide same, we are quick to point fingers at other nations that are doing better. It is a global practice for government to set up tolls; the proceeds are used for maintenance and other road project. It is not an easy reality to accept, but its long term benefits are enormous.

You guys should rather ask
You guys should rather ask that LCC reduce the toll to amounts that are more affordable than asking for the tols to be fully removed.
Nigerians need to become more educated and realize that the only way forward is for governments to work with the private sector to provide infrastructure. Even without corruption, it is almost impossible for any government to provide for all the needs of a country solely from public funds!
People you need to calm down.
People you need to calm down. The taxes that you pay on its own cannot develop that road. Lagos State Government had to partner with LCC to raise money for the road. In other words, Lagos made a contribution with your taxes while LCC borrowed money from the foreign banks to develop the roads. How do you expect LCC to repay the loan? Of course from tolls collected from road users.
Wicked Capitalist Agenda of Fashola & Tinubu
I live on this axis and i say NO TO TOLLING too. We'll come out enmasse to protest against it AGAIN.
For people who don't know, the road being tolled is less than 20km and there are 3 toll points within these 20km, all in the same Eti-Osa Local Govt Area. A car pays N120 at each pass. An SUV N150, up like that till N350 for articulated trucks. And the quality of the road is so poor.
Imagine me having to pay N900 daily just because i want 2go 2work on a 20km drive. That's not less than N23,000 extra from my salary. And i pay my tax. I generate 90% of my power, i pump my water, i build my road, i pay for security of my street (not house). Is Fashola going to increase my salary? And the fool in Abuja wants to remove fuel subsidy too.
Imagine the multiplying effect this tolling will have on the poor masses interms of transport fares and other things. Shame unto Fashola & Tinubu for their wicked version of capitalism on the people of Lagos. This is not what we voted them for.
@ wot Rate?
If u are previllaged to afford such charges others are not that lucky like you. The price on such toll are too high. N20 per car is advisable. Having 3 tollgates in 10 kilometer road is ridiclous by ACN led government of Lagos State. I think this is a trap for Tinubu & Company to fail Politicallt. Tinubu be careful enuff is enuff!!
