Multi-Billion Dollar "Eko Atlantic City" Project Caused Fatal Atlantic Ocean Surge That Killed 16 People In Lagos

By SaharaReporters, New York

A powerful ocean tide yesterday swept away 16 people in Lagos . So far, 6 bodies have been recovered including that of a six year old girl.

Precisely a month ago,  SaharaReporters released a series of photos depicting a dangerous trend on Lagos beach fronts due to the mindless dredging of the Lagos beach fronts for construction of the Eko Atlantic City. A project planned and executed to create luxury homes for some 400,000 super rich and powerful Nigerians.

Our photonews warned that an environmental disaster on the beaches as a result of the dredging occasioned by the ongoing project was just days away.

Last night the ocean conquered the boundary between it and the Kuramo Beach, sweeping away 16 residents, all of them presumed dead at this point.

The vicious current first assaulted its neighboring Kuramo Beach near Goshen Estate and later spread  to Alpha Beach, Mayegun and Badagry waterfronts.

Several people have been displaced, and Lagos officials are capitalizing on the tragedy to eliminate several homes and small businesses owned poor people by blaming them for the tragic ocean storm.

Several small business owners and residents in the area told Saharareporters that the wave happens every year, but blamed this years ferocity on the construction of the new "Eko Atlantic City". The said the dredging ultimately empowered the Atlantic ocean's discharge of its tidal wave to maximum width and places, thereby causing the havoc yesterday.

The tide to forcefully pull down its border with the Kuramo beach.

The Lagos state government has deployed Policemen this morning to cordon off the Kuramo beach, while executing the Lagos State Government’s order to forcefully eject people from the area.

As well as

And let's also add to that that Lagos State and Eko Atlantic caused hurricane Sandy in the East of the USA as well as all the flooding problems in Nigeria!

Why not add Fukushima to that list?

It'd be nice to get the facts right for once

ocean wealth

the surge as been occuring frequently which means there is no real point in blaming the lagos state govt 4 planning a projecj dat could be d states turning point and would also creates job 4 many dat are criticïzing it at d beging. Talking abt d people dat were killed during the surge although its nt awa wish buh a proverb says OBEDIENCE IS BETTER THAN SACRIFICE since they av been warned to vacate the water fronts even though the govt did nt provide them with good alternate they sulf av heed to d warnin and there afta they would table a request to the govt. I THINK THE GOVT SULD CONTINUE WITH THE PROJECT SINCE IT IS GOING TO BE BENEFICIAL IN THE NEAREST FUTURE.GOOD WORK MR GOVERNOR

no u don't have to blame the project rather blame ur fatigued brain buzzo!
Is ghana having the atlantic project too, that's y u can't compare our stands, ghana is not even larger than lagos so how would she have the same impact with naija, abeg carry on S.R!

why criticise S.R and ur so called less informed residents?

S.R is very right about their gathered info's what is not right is ur motifed answers to S.R,1,every august brings an out pour from the ocean but last year's n this year's was fatal due to the project on going because of the measures put in place!
2 b'cos they know much before issuing the contract to a company without no record on oceanic projects, nigeria is not dubai!
Again our governor despite all the credit we accord to u it seems u r less concerned about humanism by displacing the masses without alternate provisions

NO, Eko Atlantic project didn't cause the surge!

We've been witnessing Ocean Surges far before the Eko Atlantic project began. Go and check the records. At a time water from the ocean went beyond bar beach towers.
There was another period where the water occupied a portion of the road. All these were many years before Eko Atlantic project started.

The federal government was, almost on a yearly basis then, spending huge amount of money on putting up barriers to prevent the frequent surge to no avail.

Go check the records and stop misinforming people.

Super Rich Idiots

U must be a selfish idiot, how can u talk like this? If you can buy a land in Lagos Atlantic City, well you can't buy one in paradise. Vanity upon vanity, it's like chasing the wind, you are nothing but a fool like the bible says. Super rich my ass!

Floods

Some states in the U.S recorded temperature of about 42Celsius, one of the hottest ever. would you blame that on their spaceship? And the drought?
Brisbane and other major cities in the world that have experienced floods aint close to Lag dredging. What about the floods in Northern Nigeria?
The signs of climate change are every where.

Re: Eko Mega Project

Agreed that Lagos State want to advance but at what cost? (social benefit/social cost). I will like to ask the man in charge of Lagos State.....What has he done on agriculture, education, health care, communication, infrastructure, employment, security, power generation, poverty etc. May God bless this generation and sustain the unborn children of this wicked planet (pardon my language).

stop critisizing fashola

Does america space exploration which has claimed lots of lives blamed on any individual but lapses are challenges which has made them number one in the world. If we want to grow lets supports good ideas .

NO man's land Indeed

No man's land indeed!!

FASHOLA please don't be angry

FASHOLA please don't be angry with your people, they know little.
The prise to do good for the future not be small thing o.

wrong insinuation

That the ocean surge was caused by the recent development at the lagoon front is a very myopic statement. As we all know the surge has always been coming years past as a result creating tilikia, before the Bola Tinubu administration proffered an engineering solution that has brought calm to Ahmadu Bello road. And I still remember that my mother told me that the marina car park and its environs(NITEL) used to be part of the lagoon before it was dreged and then converted into lands of use to the populace today. For me I am of the opinion that the Atalantic project by the Fashola administration is positive and beneficial as it will creates jobs and put us in the global map of cities with tourist. Attractive centres like they have in Dubai. The people, state and our Country will realise revenues from it directly or indirectly. I'll advise the various ministries and agencies concered to coordinate themselves and create ways to manage such occurence since it can never be allayed permanently.

bullshit

Dredging is not a big deal so far the piles are well arranged.
you could contact British trained engineers and NOT local engineers cos projects like this requires high tech specialisT

FASHOLA IS COPING VERY WELL FROM AWOLOWO

This is how Awo was able to have more land than anybody in Nigeria before he died useless death.

Tinubu came and did the same thing by grabbing land here and there but this coward FASHOLA own has nothing to compare but lets wait and see how he will end his life because all those died in the avoidable disasters their blood is upon FASHOLA HEAD AND his generations born and unborn.

SAHARA REPORTERS- KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

It is obvious that many Nigerians (who live in Nigeria) are educated illiterates, and very selfish, greedy and wicked. Go and confirm from Rep. of Benin down to Gambia on one end and to South Africa, on to Kenya. If SH does not expose and sustain these news highlighting the wickedness of a very few satanically minded people, e.g. promoters of the Atlantic City Project, which other News Media will do? Please sustain the exposes that will shame these evil self-appointed leaders, until either God gives us a Messiah or break the country peacefully.

RE

Please you need to make it clear that you as a person will not read SR and not generalising with the use of 'WE'.

Bros.what is wrong wt SR ?

Bros.what is wrong wt SR ? Reporting dt dredging without protection goin on? Did U take time to read other peoes comments???? Let's not put politic into all issue in Nigeria.

Sahara man, i looked up to

Sahara man, i looked up to you as a very responsible source of information but your peace on the recent ocean surge in Lagos is uncalled for. First, the so called poor people are illegal occupants who are not suppose to be within that vicinity and asking them to leave is good for them and beneficial for all. Secondly, if the Lagos State policy is considered to be too harsh in that regards, please advise them to go back to their respective towns, villages and countries where they are expected to live like Kings. You talked of their businesses, please take a second look at their products. Is it the indian hemp or illicit alcoholic drinks or the hard drugs or churches without boundries or the prostitution that endangers their lives and that of thier patrons.I am not holding forth for anyone but our beaches have been so desicrated by the unchecked acts of these few people. To this extent, i will request you to take a keen look at the issue again, thank you.

YES. Dredging can be a problem

That Shoreline in Lagos named Victoria after Nnamdi Azikiwe's wife, has been a constant point of interaction between Ocean and man. It's sandy slope helps break the waves (Breakers).

If you DREDGE it, you offset that natural balance and the surge breakers will have nowhere to break which will force the ocean to surge across the road and cause havoc. As plane need long runway to takeoff, active ocean need streched slope to break the waves.
At all time, there is check and balance, you can push the ocean back today but tomorrow maybe your payday.

Ask the institute of oceanography and marine research Lagos. It was my college case study on nearshore oceanography.

stop this irresponsible journalism

Stop this irresponsible journalism sahara reporters! shameful.

Same thing happened in Ghana!

There was a tidal surge in Ghana as well, do we blame the same project?

http://news1.ghananation.com/latest-news/270815-many-displaced-as-tidal-...

Rich fools

Thrs no crime in being rich even if u steal or kill to become rich.its only a matter of time, lagos will become another victim of tsunami n wen dat happens johnson wld need to hire the poor man for his rescue mission service.only matter of time.rich fool...yuck

In 2007, the then

In 2007, the then newly-elected Lagos State Government banned all dredging of the lagoon and the Atlantic ocean. The reason put forward was that environmental disaster looms if such activities continued unabated. Some years down the line, the same government, without any of the existing parameters changing, embarked on a project involving dredging and sand filling in a scale hitherto not witnessed in this country. Coastline from Epe to Badagry is unprotected and environmental calamities visit the populace with impunity. Those who fail to plan......... Only in Nigeria!

Chagoury, Tinubu's Eko Atlantic City Investment...

Atlantic Ocean Tamed...???

Published January 11th, 2011

RONALD Chagoury, a management official of South Energy Nigeria Limited, has assured residents of Lagos State and environ that the power and possible violence of the Atlantic Ocean is being tamed by a new offshore wall.
He said this to contain the fears expressed by some Nigerians over possible upsurge of the ocean in the nearest future, thereby causing untold flooding disaster on the resident of the state and its environs. Speaking on behalf of the management of the multi-billion naira Eko Atlantic City, Chagoury allayed the fears and agitations of some concerned residents of Lagos and the general public, who may wish to live and work at the Eko Atlantic City over possible effects of the reclamation of the land currently ongoing on the Lagos bar beach.

SIMPLE LOGIC

Put an unopened pure water sachet (full of water) on a table. Use a finger to press any part. The water moves from the depressed part of water sachet to another part, causing the undepressed part to rise (bulge) cos of increase in volume of water transferred from the depressed part. The more you press, the more water moves the undpressed part. That is the simple analogy of sand filling going on in Lagos. Coastline from Badagry to Epe is not protected whilst massive dredging and sandfilling is going on for Eko Atlantic City. Only in Nigeria is such environmental degradation project termed development. Deceit all the way.

I am very disappointed in SR

I am very disappointed in SR after reading tis article. SR needs to be proactive in their reports. We all appreciate what Fashola and his group are doing in Lagos. We can see the physical development in the infrastructures of the state and will not like this kind of report about Lagos. If SA continue to give wrong information about Lagos, we the readers club will stop reading SA.

Why this endless attack on

Why this endless attack on rich people? There is nothing wrong with being rich.I ask you this question , has a poor person ever offer you a job? Of course not! You need rich people in any society and a strong middleclass. By the way poor people shouldn't be living by the beach, that's prime real estate area. It might sound cold but its the reality. Lagos state need to attract investors into the state, and in order to do that it need to create comfortable living environment for tts investors. They need a better tax base, that is the truth. Poor people don't contribute much.If poor people need to live by ocean front they could work as cooks, drivers, maids, etc, etc for the so called super rich Nigerians.Or move back to their villages. Lagos is suppose to be a no man's land anyway.
