Nigeria Auto Accident Claims 70 Passengers

The scene of the accident on Benin-Ore road
By SaharaReporters, New York

An accident at Igbogui market along the Ore-Benin highway has claimed the lives of dozens of Nigerians. Eyewitnesses told Saharareporters that over seventy passengers died when a luxury bus belonging to the Young Shall Grow Transport Company collided with a Dangote tanker laden with pms(fuel). The Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), however, reported that 36 persons died.

In a press release issued by the FRSC, the agency gave the cause of the accident as a tyre malfunction on the Dangote truck. “Preliminary reports from the FRSC indicated that a tyre from the Dangote truck suddenly pulled out and rammed into the Tanker which caught fire immediately,” the Press Release says. “The luxury bus which was on speed, lost control and ran into the blazing fire, consuming its occupants.”

The FRSC said it rescued three passengers while 30 others died from the luxury bus. The tanker driver and his conductor were also reported killed in addition to two children who died when the fire spread to a nearby mechanic garage.  The FRSC reported that eight other vehicles were burned.

The luxury bus originated from Jibowu station and was headed for Enugu with 30 passengers.

The Benin-Ore highway is famed for its perennial maintenance problems and numerous safety concerns that periodically lead to accidents. Drivers on the road are also known to drive recklessly.

The gridlock caused by the accident forced the FRSC to divert traffic away from Benin-Ore road at Oluku junction to Ifon-Owo-Akure road to Lagos.

According to the Press Release signed by the FRSC Public Education officer, Jonas Agwu, the agency has been concerned about the recent spate of road accidents. The agency blamed speeding and reckless driving for the accidents. “The Federal Road Safety Corps has concluded plans to evoke its statutory mandate by instituting legal actions against the driver and transport operators whose vehicles are responsible for such crashes,” Mr. Agwu said.

The FRSC also resolved “to assist victims and relations of road crash victims to seek compensation from such fleet operators.

RIP my brothers and sisters until we meet to part no more

RIP to the fallen souls of this road mishap. I feel your pain. Its no fault of you all that your lives were cut short in such a barbaric manner. They have hijacked your abundant resources of the SE and refused to repair your roads. Ojukwu (rip Ikemba) saw the injustice and neglection being vented on you and wanted out from the deceptive contraption but they vehemently refused and exterminated over 3million of our women and babies. Over 40years we're still being killed systematically. They close your shops and businesses in the west to starve and kill you. They kill you in the north and label you dogs and baboons. Roads to go to your homes are in a coma state. Who will save Biafran nation from the hands of her oppressors. Oh Ikemba, we miss you dearly!

I SAW THE CORPSES AT THE MOTUARY THEY WERE TAKEN TO

FRSC SHOULD PLEASE VERITY THEIR STATISTICS BEFORE RUSHING TO BRIEF THE PUBLIC. RELIABLE SOURCE STATED CLEARLY THAT THEY ARE UP TO 70 PERSONS. 60 PASSENGERS IN THE BUS EXCLUDING THE DRIVER, MOTOR BOY (2) AND OTHERS NOT ON THE MANIFEST.

I VISITED THE MORTUARY WHERE THE BURNT CORPSES WERE DEPOSITED. FELLOW COUNTRY MEN, IT IS SO GORY THAT I CAN NOT PUBLISH THE PHOTOGRAPH I TOOK. NIGERIANS WERE BURNT BEYOND RECOGNITION. SKULLS OPENED UP WITH THE BRAIN CAKED, BODIES PARTS GATHERED AS HEAPS OF REFUSE - OH WHAT A WORLD. I WONDER HOW THE RELATIVE WOULD RECOGNIZE THEIR LOVED ONES.

THESE ARE OBVIOUSLY SIGNS OF THE END. JESUS IS COMING TO PUT AN END TO THIS EVIL WORLD SYSTEM AND ITS SELFISH GOVERNANCE.

FRSC wake up for real

70 persons? This is horrible. May they rest in Peace. FRSC are just waking up or are you trying to wake up? Are you still battling between sleep and conciousness. The FRSC should enforce the laws governing road worthiness, speed limit, drunk driving etc. They should be strict and sincere in tackling issues of road safety that are their responsibility. If the transporters are held responsible for any accident their various companies cause, they will wake up to their responsibilities of ensuring that their staffs obey the road rules and that any vehicle is in order before hitting the road. FRSC has said many things in this report. Let this not be one of the tantrums you'll come and throw at the heat of an event and later sweep it under the carpet. I hope will follow your words up religiously.

BLOOD EVERYWHERE!

Blood everywhere? Is life that cheap? The whole stuff ends when we face the truth, say it and do good things at the right time. Bloody money for that road is resting in somebody's bank account. What of those that continually issue driving license without testing the drivers? The solution to our problem lies more in our hands.

FRSC, RIGOUROUS TRAINING FOR BUS DRIVERS PLS, NOT NUMBER PLATES

@FRSC Boss,
In the countries of people that manufacture vehicles, before a man or woman is allowed to become a commercial bus driver, he/she must undergo rigorous training and tests.

FRSC under Mr. Chidozie is known to have focused mainly on vehicle number plates - money making. hardly any danger road signs on Nigeria's roads, no training for drivers who just walked in at FRSC offices, pay money and are issued driving license. People perish unnecessarily from avoidable road accidents. May the souls of the dead rest in peace.

OH MY GOD

May the soul of the departed rest in peace. These accidents, where are we heading to. Mhm.......

Avoidable Deaths

If roads and vehicles were maintained, this people won't be dead.

Allah ya jikan musulimi. Amin

RE - NIGERIA AUTO ACCIDENT CLAIMS 70 PASSENGERS

It is very unfortunate to always record deaths on our roads in circumstances that are avoidable. But my worry also is the type of reports we read from Sahara reporters, if you report that the Bus was carrying 30 passengers where then did you get the death toll of 70 passengers. I hope SR should be more responsible in your reporting than promoting any agenda that negates the peace and unity of Nigeria. Please be guided.

Inna Lilahi wainna ilehi Rojiuhna

Ohhhh my God. do we still attribute this to boko haram or injustice and unfairness for the masses from Government? God Almighty is there to judge. Let them continue flying using private Jet and the masses continue to suffer. I know God will surely one day give us government that will care for us.

This is a Joke!!

I think FRSC is insane! So a luxury bus that left Lagos to Enugu was carrying only 33 passengers?

Northerners Using Every Means to Kill Southerners

When this number of people are killed in Nigeria, know that there is a Northern element involved

This is one thing I do not

This is one thing I do not understand with Nigerian Government agencies. Why wait for accidents like these before evoking statutory mandates or prosecuting those who fall foul of traffic laws?
Secondly, are these vehicles not insured? Why seek compensation from fleet operators?
The FRSC can prosecute fleet operators who do not maintain their vehicles or discipline their driver. But when it come to compensation they must look in the direction of insurers because that is the whole essence of insurance.

Time 4 SS&SE spring is NOW!..Time 2 control our resources is NOW

Why did SR not write about d bad state of d road & the recklessness of d drivers b4 this incident. Rather you wait for accident to happen & then "Break" the news so that 'fifo' go dey clap for u...I know all your corespondents are busy following Princess Pat up & down sniffing for news items here & there or following one SS&SE governor looking for stories but not bad roads in the region. See your lives? If Oshimohle had constructed a bridge someone wud hav called it a Purple Elephant project. Nonsense....Reporting for Premiurm Times, PUNCH newspapers & PM news. Why not report for Bayelsa Mirror & Port Hacourt Daily or Edo's daily Observer? Tribalistic 'ethnicocentric' reporting. Nonsense!May the souls of the departed rest but their spirits should haunt pple like OBJ, IBB etc to death for for stealing its oil wealth thus depriving citizens good roads & amenities from Benin to Calabar counties. May these past presidents rot in d hottest part of hell when they die. Amen.

God have mercy on there soul.

God please have mercy on nigeria. our gov have good plan for nigeria for many year but noting is work, big joe please do some thing.
