Nigeria Is One Of Africa’s "Big Messes of Countries-(BMC)”- Richard Joseph
Professor Richard Joseph of Northwestern University has described Nigeria as one of the Big Messes of Countries in Africa. He made the declaration at the 3rd Achebe Colloquium on Africa going on at the Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts at Brown University. Other countries he classified as such are Sudan, Congo and Somalia.
Professor Joseph was speaking as part of the panel that looked at The Arab Spring: Challenges to Democratization and Nation Building. He suggested that the West should stop viewing Islamists emerging from the Arab Spring as a force to be crushed.
Earlier in the program, the former Secretary General of The Commonwealth, Mr. Emeka Anyaoku said that Africa’s old way has failed and a new order is emerging. In his keynote speak at the event he chronicled Africa’s journey to this new dawn. Tapping into his experience at the Commonwealth, he stated that the absence of good governance is responsible for the economic underdevelopment on the continent. He warned that until politics is seen as a call to service and until anti-corruption agencies stop trapping the small fish while letting the big fish go free, sub-Saharan Africa has a long way to go. “Every African country has to find its own way to a democracy that suits its history and tradition.”
Other contributors in the panel discussion included Daniel Serwer of the Center for Transatlantic Relations at John Hopkins University. He spoke about the unresolved trajectories of the revolution aftermath. He told the participants that the big issue in the emerging Islamic countries is the introduction of Islam not just a religion but as law.
Abdelwahab El-Affendi, coordinator, Democracy and Islamic Program Center for the Study of Democracy, University of Westminster chided western and Arab academics for being pessimistic and distrusting of the Arab people. He noted that the academics failed to anticipate what happened and people who were thought to be divided along ethnic, sectarian lines were wrapping themselves in the flag. He observed that only the regimes in Syria and Bahrain were able to successfully divide the people.
Thinking ten years in the future, Chibli Mallat of Harvard Law School presented what he called the three axis of study- non-violence, Democratic dance and challenge of transformation justice.
Ali Mazrui who talked about Arab Spring and the Long Female Winter. He listed the women in Arab history who sowed the seed of the revolution we are seeing. He hoped that Egypt or Tunisia would produce the first female president. Prof. Mazrui complained that in Libya, the opposition was weaponized rapidly. “Ghadafi is a bad Libyan,” he said, “but a good African.”
Thank you for Educating Gboluwaga
@Okelo Madukaife you just spared me some time I would have spent putting the contributor on the path of knowledge. I think you did better than I would have done. Good to let him/her know that no one has doubted Ojukwu's greatness, but his greatness never in any way eclipsed Achebe's rare greatness. If he/she appreciates your little lecture, he/she will seek for more. Please do not refrain from putting him/her right in your uncommon polite way.
Gboluwaga, I see the cynicism
Gboluwaga, I see the cynicism in ur comment, but I do not know if it is a product of premeditation or under-information. You are right that Achebe is a writer.Hence you should know that Achebe proffered solution in a book entitled 'The trouble with Nigeria' and has followed up with Achebe literary series. He was called back to lead his town union -Ogidi Union years back.It was in the course of this assignment that he was involved in a car crash hence flown abroad for treatment.Subsequently, he has had to move around on a wheelchair. No Igbo is complaining about where Achebe is located, from where his contribution is appreciated.it is needless to prescibe identical path for Achebe and Ojukwu who you now suddenly credit with greatness because every dead man is good
Achebe is a writer and not a fighter
Et al:
I noticed a lot of people bashing Prof. Achebe for his consistent criticism of Nigerian government. You must remember that Achebe is a write of the highest order, but not a fighter. Achebe is among people who complains, and complains, and complains without providing any meaningful solution. He can join with his fellow Igbo people to start a project in his homeland, recommend solutions, etc. But hey, his is human, and he can continue to complain and see everything wrong in Nigeria. He should take a leaf from the greatest Igbo man (Ojukwu), and go back to Nigeria, and reside in his home state to help the course of his people. Afterall, he has enough money to take care of himself. He may even be given an Igwe title or Obi of somewhere. And hopefully, he would not reject it in protest!
Sincerely Yours,
Gboluwaga.
revolution likely to start in
revolution likely to start in northern nigeria
Nigeria Is One of Africa's Big Messes of Countries( I disagree!)
@AZIBAOLA UKUEJE I AGREE.ALL THESE NOISES THE SO-CALLED PROFESSORS ARE MAKING ABROAD ARE FOOLISHNESS.MANY FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS KNEW OUR MALADIES.THESE PROFESSORS CAME ABROAD & THEN FORM A LEAGUE OF PROFESSORS SPEAKING AGAINST NIGERIA.HOW DARE YOU STUPID EDUCATED FOOLS PUT NIGERIA DOWN?.HOW DO YOU ESPECT FOREIGNERS TO REACT TO YR NIGERIA PUT DOWN?.WILL YOUR BLAMING BRING GOOD INVESTMENTS TO NIGERIA?.ALL OF YOU STUPID PROFESSORS SHOULD BE ASHAME OF YOURSELVES.I LIVE ABROAD FOR OVER 40YRS & I CONSIDER MYSELF AS PART OF THE PROBLEM TOO.WHO IS NIGERIA?WE ALL ARE & IT IS VERY WRONG TO SIT OUR ASSES ABROAD & START BLAMING NIGERIA.FOOLISH PROFESSORS GO TO LAGOS/ABUJA TO DELIVER YR SERMONS NOT N.Y.BEFORE SOME OF YOU CAME TO NORTH AMERICA I WAS HERE AND I HAVE SEEN IT ALL.EVERY COUNTRY HAS HER OWN ILLS.ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY.IF THE PROGRESS IN NIGERIA IS SLOW THEN GO HOME AND HELP NIGERIA.I AM TIRED OF THESE NOISES FROM YOU EDUCATED FOOLS.LONG LIVE NIGERIA
Nigerians have a slave mentality
now i know why nigeria is the most dysfunctional and corrupt nation on earth. Because nigerians are cowardly slaves who do not want to fight for their freedom and who insults those who fight for them. What a pity
Average Joe/Joe the Plumber!
joepublic your contributions are down right silly and can only come from an unserious mind and with a name like that , no wasting time you start with your ethnic colouration of an otherwise constructive criticism, question is not DO YOU
, but CAN YOU at all see what Achebe sees . . .no ! this country once aspired to greatness and Achebe and his colleagues were witness to that period,. . . Electricity, Car loans , Railways , Hospitals , Education, Judiciary, Students rebate,Good roads, Night Travels, Nigerian Airways , Nigerian Shipping Lines, e.t.c Todays Nigeria is a throw back into Primitive living , with massive and stupendious graft ,terrorism and badly compromised judiciary e.t.c , and good morning joe, thinks people are shouting too much!
Illegality in Nigeria must stop!
I am afraid as a Nigerian who has witness some illegalities practice by some segment of the police. Still on as at yesterday about 10 armed police men from Ojo police command with a dismissed Man O' War officer by name Okosun walk into the office of Dr. Ese the President and Commander General of Man O' War Association of Nigeria in his Lagos office. when they got to station the DPO of Ojo police command was approached he said their is a warrant to arrest the Commander General, he was asked on what grand’s he said it was a court injunction and that no bill can be granted until Monday when the can be taking to court. he was arrested with two other officers pointed by the dismissed Man O' War officer. the commissioner of Police Lagos state have issued an order to the DPO Ojo to hands off the Man O' War case but he refuse because he is been used to hunt Dr. Ese the President and Commander General of Man O' War Association of Nigeria by Okosun.
NEW SYSTEM REQUIRED
True talk my brother. I have strategy for this new form. I'd release it soon.
WHAT SOLUTIONS ARE TALKING ABOUT, JOE PUBLIC
THAT NIGERIA SHOULD BE THE REFINING HUB OF AFRICA INSTEAD OF BEING THE ONLY OIL PRODUCER THAT IMPORTS REFINED PRODUCTS? OR IS IT THAT WE SHOULD SECURE OUR BORDERS TO STOPS ARMS COMING IN AND ILLEGAL GOODS GOING OUT? OR THAT THOSE FOUND TO HAVE MISAPPROPRIATE PUBLIC FUNDS SHOULD BE PUNISHED? DO YOU WANT HIM TO ADVISE THE PRESIDENT ABOUT THE STATE OF OUR INFRASTRUCTURE SUCH AS ROADS, HOSPITALS, EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, ETC? YOU ARE FREE TO HAVE ANY OPINION ON THE STATE OF OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM, FOR ME JONATHAN IS A PHD HOLDER AND YOU DONT GET THAT BY BEING A DUMMY, EVEN IN NIGERIA. PEOPLE LIKE ACHEBE HAVE SAID IT ALL BEFORE. ACHEBE'S FRUSTRATIONS MUST BE THE LACK OF A LEADER WITH THE MORAL AND PHYSICAL COURAGE TO IMPLEMENT THE SOLUTIONS PROFFERRED SO FAR. ELEVEN AIRCRAFTS IN THE PRESIDENTIAL FLEET IS A STATEMENT OF THE CONDITION OF OUR ROADS, PATIENCE GOING ABROAD FOR FEVER TELLS ABOUT OUR HOSPITALS,RUNNING ASO VILLA PERMANENTLY ON GENERATORS TELLS THE PRESIDENT ABOUT PHCN, ETC.
Old wine in new bottle?
Nothing we have not heard before now I guess and Nigeria however did not become what it is overnight. I would expect the prof and his friends from the academia to start discussing solutions and engaging the system from within and not name calling from outside, taking on the self righteous status. In my opinion Nigerians are statistically bad and that includes Achebe himself, the reason we are where we are today. It is common knowledge that corrupt politicians, the only group these men seem to blame, transfer all their stolen funds to countries these noises are being made from but these speakers have been careful enough not to criticise their host governments for fear of favour witdrawal. Get real, if you want to solve the problems of Nigeria, you need to be there and not in the comfort of Western hotels like an online internet doctor. Achebe should stop slamming Nigeria before the international community and engage his home government if he really wants change and not fame.
Getting Too Emotional Does Not Help Anyone!
Being emotional is very human, but I do sometimes worry that Black people(including the most educated ones irrespective of where they live) often get too emotional where they shouldn't.
I do not mind personal insults and do not moan about being called names by readers that have allowed their emotions take control of their heads and hands. However, I remain deeply worried that the most educated Black individuals living in the free world are not sufficiently alarmed (if alarmed at all) about the situation of the Black race and are still engaged in self- advertising talkshops that produce no useful ideological frameworks or anything uniquely helpful to our development.
My enlightenment tells me that we have far too many talk shops that produced nothing of significance and that the educated Black man is now the chief curse of the Black race.
Only fools continue to apply the same methods that have failed them severally, without modifications!
Prof proffer solutions not criticisms
Achebe should try and contribute recommended solutions to the problems he seees in the Nigerian project, rather than always quick to criticise. He lives comfortably in America, far away from the hectic life of Nigeria. Yes our President appears to be out of touch with reality: that is wherer Achebe can reach out to Jonathan with suggestions. The economic team is led by Okonjo-Iweala a fellow Igbo, so why not pow wow with her to suggest how to create jobs? These conferences Achebe organises should be geared more towards offering solutions rather than just criticising. Remember that in the audience are people sent by the government to listen and report back. At his level, Achebe should be offering solutions, not continued criticisms only. Does Achebe believe in a united Nigeria? Has anyone ever asked him this question?
GEJ's agents are here! John Iteshi & Kaparak!!!
These low life agents of corruption are here to shoot down what these honourable men are trying to achieve. When the black man's revolution begins, there will be no hiding place for the corrupt.
Nigeria is in this state because of corruption, so when the time to fix or break up these Nigeria arrives, you will all be hunted down.
Democracy has failed
We don't like telling our self's the truth.
is it not obvious that Democracy is not
Working, for it is the root of corruption.
The truth is obviously seen but not heard.
Ok for example, you are running for
Governor, and your party members,
Supporters and so on, all with all form
Of support, Finance, Gifts, and all sort
Of Favours. Don't you think you will be
Obligated to them one way or the other.
All with there selfish agendas.
Believe me, this the source of corruption.
From the top down to the bottom of the
chain.
What we should be thinking of, is a new
form of governance.
Achebe is a fighter for the poor masses
The ignorant slaves here should go commit suicide.Achebe is fighting against the misrule and corruption in nigeria through the awareness his colloquim raises. He has a voice and he is using it for the benefit of the masses. People have to continue to speak-out before things can change. Achebe could have joined the cabal to loot the nation but he chose to stay on the side of the impoverished masses. We should respect him for that.
Nigeria Is Africa's Biggest Mess!
To think that Nigeria was once rated with Brasil, Malaysia, Indonasia, etc but still cannot provide even the most basic of amenities for her citizens, a "mess" is putting "failed" politely. Look at the other countries mentioned in the same breath, all failed states! It failed under the criminal PDP and the Crown Prince of Corruption, Ugly OBJ. Dumbo is his Bingo!
@ Itechi : Your "enlightenment" amounts to bush education if you don't know that attending such fora are the stuff Ph.D's are made of. Papers and thesis are discussed and synchronised into books, theories, laws and policy formations for serious countries. In your "enlightened" third world you buy your certies and good is. You're a badge-carrying fool.
Their views are facts & could help Achebe 2 com & declare Biafra
Their views are facts, and the ideas being sold in this forum should be used by Achebe to on the secession bid from where his late kins, Ojukwu and Effiongwu stopped.
Yeye people, why did they come to Aso Rock or National Assembly to stage their rhetorical shits.
My single and only prayer is that Nigeria should break so that we can see the end of the dominance of so-called 3 major tethnic, Hausa-Igbo-Yoruba political and economic cabals. Wallahi, let Nigeria get fragmented into pieces in such a way that each ethnic and tribal group will have its separate nation. I dey laugh!
@ Bolton Lendem
And would you blame Achebe, as you allege, for wanting to raise the Biafran flag? Does Nigeria, as presently constituted, work? Therein lies you answer.
SR vs her Intellectually Challenged Readers
Before insulting the publishers of Sahara-reporters, please kindly read the "ABOUT US" page. Most publication on this news medium are posted by citizens reporters, which can be anyone and are then published by SR. Most comments here are like that of little girls accusing each other of stealing each others boyfriend, and what bothers me the most is, eighty percent of readers are men that are 35 years and above. I totally understand most readers spent 9 years in a Failed educational institution for a 5years Major course due to ASSU strike but it is not a waiver for been a low life and plain STUPID when commenting on public forum. What have you done for your community? Self righteousness, tribalism and pretense won't help us in nation building.
@DERI and mistaken priorities
I was at the Oil Subsidy cabal article, read through all threads and could not find your contribution? I thought you are Pro Ijaw-Niger Delta resources control? Your resources are being stolen by group of Nigerians and you are here condemning Intellectuals that never stole from your resource? No one take you serious on SR cos you have Dementia .
who is cheating who
What lack here in nigeria is the zeal and will by our political leaders to change the lives of the masses. What am promsing them is that,we the youths of this country are getting tired of them. But what pissed me of is that, our so called leaders are not even ashmed of themselves.
The Ojukwu in Achebe
The “spontaneous revolts” in Egypt, Libya, Syria Yemen and Tunisia, for example, portrayed with such unrestrained enthusiasm by the Western and the creeping African news media, are the culmination of years of planning, training, networking, and funding regional “activists,” based in Europe and America such as the Achebes. To follow exactly the same pattern as that seen in the “colour revolutions” of the former Soviet bloc states in North Africa. A far-reaching network of interlocking organisations has emerged, funded in part by the US Government, and in part by corporate sources, like the oil industry in Nigeria to foment “revolution around North Africa. The Achebes who are more interested in raising the flag of Biafra in the South East of Nigeria than anything else, are now the arrow head of the project in the West African sun-region.
Another Ojukwu is born in America

@....deri
@deri what are you trying to say? we are talking about how Gej and his killer party has further messed this country up and you are there talking about Islam-a-bad..!
Plz admit that Nigeria is a big time Messed-Up country and kindly suggest how we can salvage this cursed giant!
Let the truth be told..with the event of things and after the senate reveal the oil-subsidy cabal, i felt disappointed in GEJ and thus i withdrew my Niger-delta support for the lame president!
a bunch of noise makers without focus-d islamist are back
"In 1974, the Muslim Brotherhood formally issued a declaration commanding its members to support Sadat's pro-IMF infitah (economic opening). Such an action was true to form for political Islam."
Throughout its history, MB members have been militantly pro-capitalist and against class-struggle on principle. Rarely did they support the poor, disenfranchised, or downtrodden. In Egypt, they didn't side with aggrieved workers or farmers who lost out under Sadat. Instead they opposed unions and leftists besides engaging in strikebreaking. In turn, they were supported by wealthy financial and business interests, often secretly, including the Saudis. They also created their own businesses and banks, including the Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt in 1976. It became a cornerstone of Islamic banks run by Saudi Prince Mohammed al-Faisal, son of King Faisal.
Small Brain Nigerian
There are too many Nigerians with very small brains that such people only reason and think within the concept of their village environment or local exposure.
People like Iteshi falls into such category. Take it or leave it, Nigeria is a mess and a disgrace to Africa. What you have there working for your types are abosulte corruption. Nothing works in that God forsaken country. Iteshi, keep defending the undefendable.
John Iteshi how come you are so Ignorant.
Mr Iteshi, Good evenning .
Professor joseph is not a whiteman. He is originally a black American who taught in University of Ibadan and in Sudan and qualifies to hold both Nigerian and sudanese passports.
What you call talk shops are intellectual forums looking for a way to save your country from descending into another somalia, sudan,Congo or liberia.
You might not grasp it but a passive citizen is worse than a bad citizen-the first law in civics.
Fcuk patriotisim..Nigerians
Fcuk patriotisim..Nigerians hate the Truth! That is why fickle minded and Gej+Pdp sycophants like John Iteshi a.k.a Ruben Abati will rot in Hell soon!
THE BOGGIEMAN IS LESS APPEALING NOWADAYS
The usual suspects are up to their usual past time of parading their painted Egungun mask with jockey costumes to sing, dance, and clap for their white audience's entertainment as they were used to seeing their kind in self denigration back in the colonial days, to please their Masters. If this were done at Howard University, you all will be booed off the stage, Apollo stage-style.
A self flagellating craft that Ndibe has learned so perfectly well from the Chief Minstrel Achebe in his attempt to pass it on to the next generation of Black Mambo. Unfortunately, the boogieman is less appealing this year as the crowd begin to thin out as the years go by. You can play this tribal card for so long until it starts to get too boring, according to the law of diminishing returns.
