Nigeria Secret Police Moves To Censor Media Reports On Terrorism
Worried by growing reports on acts of terrorism in Nigeria, the Directorate of the State Security Service (SSS) has invited reporters covering security in Abuja to undergo a week-long “training” on how to report terrorism in the country.
SaharaReporters learnt that the invited journalists were already in Bwari, a suburb of Abuja, where they are being taught the dos and don’ts of reporting on terrorism, according to the dictates and rule book of the Nigerian secret police.
The training is being coordinated by officers of the SSS led by its Director-General, Ekpeyong Ita.
The SSS had told the reporters that they should remain in the school throughout the duration of their training, which started on Sunday.
A senior official of the SSS told our correspondent that the agency was not happy with the way reporters were exposing security problems facing the country and blaming the security agencies for poor intelligence work. “We are worried about the image of the Service, which is being adversely affected by negative reports by journalists,” said the official. He added: “We need to partner with [the media] so that they will know the type of stories to be sending to their headquarters concerning us.”
The SSS and other security agencies have been blamed for failure of intelligence gathering, which has been identified as a factor in several successful bombings carried out by members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect in the country.
Give Us A Break
If you mean to say that the man is folically challenged, then there is simply no argument. But for you to spout your usual nonsenseis akin to the pot calling the kettle black. I have seen your comments over a period of time and frankly it stinks. If you think that Boko Haram is running the country then you must be living in a time warp. They are so frightened to even show their faces and you say that they are running the country? Give me a break please.
Reporting terror crime
Kudos to SSS & its leadership for being pro-active. Terror reporting is a specialize area jus like reporting sports. You don't write everything you or hear when it comes to crime reporting or you inadvertently expose secretss. Well done oga countryman DG (sss). Make u no mind them & na because u no dey gree them nahim be all this this talk talk.
FIRE ON SSS
we have a lot of uneducated journalist and editors on issues of state security and therefore they need this education. They find fun in rumor reporting and things that are detrimtal to state security. If they are as smart as some dumb commentators are saying here, why don't they go as embedded reporters in BH. Has the press in Nigeria ever reported anything new apart from press releases after collecting the brown envelope?
CONSPIRACY!!! Shame!
Wonders shall never end, so it is now obvious that this security people know that they are not doing enough, therefore they want to conspire with journalist to continue cheating on Nigerian. NIGERIANS WE NOW KNOW THAT WE ARE ON OUR OWN
The SS&SE are in charge
Honorable Ekpenyong is from the United States of the SS &SE and he has our mandate.
If SH feels that summoning reporters is just to tutor them, then it should better think again.
Now, that we have our country men almost everywhere, it would be a walkover when the battle of security intelligence is fought when possibly warfare becomes unavoidable as the United States of the SS&SE charts its separate course.
"Na parable I give una so. I hope una undertand am. "
Verily verily, I say unto you, Nigeria is not a country but a continent. Break up NOW!!!
Long live the United States of the SS & SE
core competence?
sss traning journalists on journalism. hmm... maybe the journalism body should reciprocate abd invite the sss for a three day training course on security management and tackling terrorism
You cant do that, we dare you
why now? You cant do that, we have www.160bits.com to air our opinions after-all we're the reporters now
to make the media stop
to make the media stop informing the masses
This report is quite
This report is quite ridiculous. Gathering journalists for training on terrorism reporting is not sufficient to conclude that they are trying to gag the media. Professional training leads to professional growth and banishes mediocrity. When people are not trained, the become baboons. If journalists are being trained by those who are experts in a particular field, it is not a bad idea. Rather, it is an added advantage for beneficiaries. This report, to say the least, is myopic.
We Really Are In Trouble!
This is the most tragically hilarious piece of news i have read in a while!!! Inept security agents training journalists on good reporting of how the security agencies are shown up for the under-performers that we all know they are? This is another example of the intellectual deficit malais plaguing our leadership.
Thumbs down for the DG and the SSS.
HOW COME DESPITE ALL THIS
HOW COME DESPITE ALL THIS KILLINGS,BOMBING OF CHURCHES AND POLICE STATIONS NOBODY IS CALLING FOR THE HEAD OF THE CURRENT NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER AS WAS DURING THE ERA OF GEN. AZZAZI FROM THE NIGER DELTA, OR IS IT BECAUSE THE CURRENT NSA IS A NORTHERN FULANI MUSLIM?. NIGERIANS, OH NIGERIANS.
JUST THINKING ALOUD..
BASIC ORIENTATION IS OKAY BUT MODERN MEDIA IS UNCONTROLLABLE
The basic ethics of reporting terrorism in a responsible manner is welcome,it may protect informers, and reduce the possibility of the terrorists reacting to the tactics of security agencies but the security agencies must also release information to the public once a terrorist attack happens even if it means telling the public when to expect more details, keeping mute will only increase the prospects of speculative reporting by the media.
The real question however is modern media, can it be controlled?the answer is "impossible"it just takes a passer by with a mobile phone to post real time video on UTUBE,it takes a lone blogger in an obscure village to post what he has just witnessed on any blog site and it may just go viral.Technology has basically overtaken censorship so all these efforts will be in vain,it is just damage limitation.

Lets do it right
I think the SSS has just woken up from a deep slumber i thought they will never woke up ffrom. This check is long overdue!
Deri, I think Jona is in trouble with these clowns call SSS !
No wonder Boko Haram has taken over the country ? So it is empty-headed people like this heading SSS ? Security personnel training journalists how to report terrorism ? Clowns !
They could invite the likes of Tribune, ThisDay, NTA and Vanguard .... but how about CNN, AlJazeera and Sahara Reporters who also report these stories and are more believable.
Deri, I think Jona is in trouble with these clowns call SSS !
I support mr. Ekpeyong
Are u a journalist? Why is that every thing Nigerians must complain, i believe it is wise to give journalist orientation, ride on mr Ekpeyong
Does National Interest Mean Anything To You?
".... as a factor in several successful bombings carried out by members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect"
This is a very good example of how not to report a bombing that has taken the lives of innocent folks. There is no such thing as successful bombing of innocents. This sort of ineptutude leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. Whose side are you on?
training of journalist
that means very soon nigerians will stop buying news paper if the government will be the one to tell the media what and how to report or do they have to change how journalism is being told in our school of higher learning.
azare youth rise against Terriorist.
Every communities come out and fight those enemy that want to bring down the progress of the people there are killing innocent people why is only happening in the north,Azare youths did what is good others now can follow more expecially Borno and yobe with the help of the youths security kill many terriorist in Azare
How can security agencies
How can security agencies stop journalist assigned to their beats from reporting events concerning the evil activities of boko haram in Nigeria? Is such possible with media outlets like SR which depends on sources outside the field of journalism in disseminating information to members of the public? The only reason for the seminar is simply to advise journalist not to over sensationalize news items-period- since such often throw fear into the hearts and minds of the masses-its people like el rufai who should be invoited to attedn such meeting
Media censorship on Terrorism
The censorship is like leaving the broken bones to cry for the muscle.Should the journalist report the opposite of what they see daily in Nigeria to please the State Security department? Is this not infringement on the freedom of information? The war wage by the Northern Hausa/ Fulani's against Christians must be fully reported for the whole world to read. The only way out is to give Sharia or Arewa republic to the Hausa./ Fulani and allow the southerners to live peacefully in their own country.
Sahara Reporters be UNIQUE
SR be unique and excellent as usual. Don't mind these failed security officers and their junk journalist. This morning by 9.15 am local time a heavy bomb blast has rocked Maiduguri. 10 Christains were slaughtered in Chibok Local Goverment in Borno State. Many crimes and killing of innocent souls by both BH and JTF is happening daily in Borno, Bauchi and Yobe States.............the situation is too terrible. Keep on reporting as usual. Congrats our last marketplace of ideas-Sahara Reporters.
let the truth be the TRUE!
if we all worked on the assumption that what is accepted as truth is really true, There would be little hope for advancement....
EVEN NOW IT IS AN EXPOSE SO
EVEN NOW IT IS AN EXPOSE SO DON'T THINK THERE IS ANY SECRECY LOLZ
nothing wrong
There is nothing wrong in training reporters on how to report matters regarding national security.civilized climes do the same.certain reports even make us more vulnerable.it is not an infringement on press freedom.the write up was not very objective Sahara.
How not to teach reporters their job.
Once again, incompetence rears its ugly head in our dear country.
First there are acts of terrorism being perpetrated everywhere and our security services does not know what to do.
Now our dear journalists are being blamed for damaging the image of SSS. If the SSS was effectively dealing with the terrorism problem, its image would look after itself.
Journalists are professionals who only report what they see. If there was no terrorism, they would not have to report it.
If the USA had our security services, Osama Bin Laden would have been in the White House by now!
Propaganda!
As much as I like reading news on SR, I somtyms gt worried as 2why they often choose 2 see d negative side of things in Nigeria. Am nt an sss official,bt am close 2 one of d jurnalists participating in d workshop, and it's nothing close to wht d SR is reporting. U people shld try & see positive side of issues somtyms.Journalism isn't abt propaganda, bt it's abt reporting issues as they truly are; nothing more, nothing less.
Nigeria Secret Police Moves To Censor Media Reports On Terrorism
Let there be one month exchange of duties between journalists and the SSS. This is prompted by the fact that each of the aforementioned seems to know the job of the other better. However, why informing the public of this Bwari meeting? Now every security reporting, one would tend to think it has been tailored or mere fabrication. I hope nobody is wounding News!

MEDIA FREEDOM, YES, BUT IN WAR SITUATION, CAUTION RULES
Journalists are professionals who bear allegiance to the public to report news as they see it.
HOWEVER, WHEN IT COMES TO SECURITY ISSUE, CAUTION IS THE WATCHWORD. A SITUATION THAT THREATENS THE CORPORATE ENTITY OF A STATE NEEDS TO HANDLE WITH CARE. WHAT, DOES THE LAW AND JOUNALIST ETHICS AND RULES SAYS IN SUCH A SITUATION.
THE MEDIA IN USA AFTER THE 9-11 ATTACK HAVE BEEN CAREFUL IN REPORTING THE ANTI-TERRORISM FIGHTS THAT WILL PORTRAY THE COUNTRY IN BAD LIGHT. JUST WATCH THE CNN AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND, HOWEVER AL-JAZEERA WILL GIVE A MORE ON-THE-GROUND ACCOUNT OF WHAT IS HAPPENING. IS THE CNN NOT PROTECTING THE CORPORATE IMAGE OF ITS HOST COUNTRY?
