Nigeria Spends N4.8 Billion On School Fees Of Ambassadors' Children -PREMIUM TIMES
Nigeria lawmakers were shocked that the foreign ministry spends far above amounts approved for fees.
The federal government bankrolled the school fees of Nigerian diplomats’ children abroad to the tune of N4.8 billion in 2011, it emerged yesterdaybas government officials scramble to reconcile past spending, and defend fresh proposals.
Up till weekend, ministries and departments and parastatals are to face lawmakers for the annual budget defence ritual, where frightening details of government’s bogus spending usually meet with lawmakers’ fleeting rebuke.
The House of Representatives foreign affairs committee headed by Nnena Elendu-Ukeje on Thursday expressed shock at the huge bill the foreign affairs ministry spends annually on school fees.
For 2011, the ministry paid N4.8 billion for foreign education of its workers’ wards -an amount that overshot approved allocation for the purpose.
The ministry proposes to spend a relatively lower N5.2 million for the same purpose this year, a figure lawmakers believe will be raised after appropriation.
The amounts foot the fees of children of ambassadors and other diplomatic staff in the nearly 200 missions run by Nigeria across the world.
Lawmakers said ministry officials have been presenting such fees and other expenditures of the ministry in bulk without details, names of beneficiaries, thereby allowing officials a freehand to later adjust the approved figures, and spend same unilaterally.
“You have put votes for security in four different places and that is the issue. You have four different sub-heads showing security votes. That is not acceptable,” Elendu-Ukeje told the minister, Olugbenga Ashiru, at a defense session.
Yet, the legislators have not indicated any plan to block the proposals or to order a discontinuation of the hefty government scholarship.
The ministry’s security votes for 2012 totals a little below N2 billion while it plans to spend N2 billion on transport and travels, another subhead the lawmakers queried.
The minister’s response was simple: “We travel to get the best,” he told the lawmakers”
“You need to get well-trained diplomats. Without training, you will not get good diplomats. Without training, there will be no results. We send some of them to Oxford, some to Italy as they will be competing with the best from the world,” he said.
Nigeria also spent hugely in funding to the United Nations, African Union and the regional body, ECOWAS in 2011.
The house committee branded the lavish levies “ridiculous.”
For 2011, the minister said, Nigeria paid 3.3 billion Naira (16 million US dollars) to the African Union. Contributions to the United Nation was N300 million while N285 million was paid to the Commonwealth.
comment of foreign affairs ministry expenditure
the minister says he spends so much to get the best...Intriguing indeed! Do we expect to get anything good from the wrong set of people to such high offices. I will be more encouraged to have a minister who is more creative than this flat-spending un-innovative public servant of this type. I am sorry, this is part of the free spending and free grabbing mentality of many Nigerian public servants.
UoZRjSQkKA
Good job making it appaer easy.
Hanging
The minister’s response was simple: “We travel to get the best,” he told the lawmakers”.
Ashiru or what ever they call you. Thanks your God that you are not china's. long time that your neck has hang-up.
A BILL
Wow that's enormous if 4.8 billion on other universities abroad are making on the cost of tax that every civil servant earn, and our universities at home have no story to write about them. Educational system in Nigeria today is wallowing down the drain. Funny enough
The minister quote "we travel to get the best". Why can't you make the best happen from where you stand and with the opportunity given to you as a delegate of this great nation. I fill a bill to be passed on all government officials and those holding public offices for there children to school in their MOthER LAND if they are proud of what they stand for, and any that proves other wise is enemy of the state and to be declared as a barrier to a better future of this country, cause without all this implemented into action it would be 220...... Before the Nation can struggle out of this impound slavery.
Nah wa Oooooo
Well what can i say than "W̶̲̥̅ε̲̣̣̣ thank God for democracy"
This is regretable
The amount of N4.8 billion when converted into the USDollar equivalent will amount to $30 000 000.If an average of $5000 is spent for every student per year. Taking an average of 5 academic session (five years) then Nigeria would have succeeded to train 6000 Nigerian graduate with the amount of $30000000.
How many Nigerian Diplomat's Students received this amount in just a year? The minister should be called to account for how the said money was spent. This should set in sanity into that sector.
Meanwhile, is the Nigerian High Commissions and Embassies still relevant? There is need to start and access their value.
Nigeria as a whole needs an
Nigeria as a whole needs an overhaul. These govt officials won't kill us with their wasteful spending. Upon all, their kids end up being useless and are also burdens to the parents. That's what you get when you cheat the poor, useless children!
What a waiste
Those in govt. Usual think they are smart. Could Sahara reporters research and present a survey of what the practice is in other part of the world. Nigerians need to know so as to puch for best practice. "No wonder they distroyed our educational system"
How much is their salary?
How much is their salary?
School Fees
Sahara Reporters does a good job but inadequate research and classless tactics like the caption picture put people off.
At the end, yes there is waste in Nigeria however we must report the truth when confronting corruption and financial irresponsibility. The government spending on the education of diplomats children is not the problem with Nigeria.
Should or should the government not pay is a different issue.
Oh yea... "For 2011, the minister said, Nigeria paid 3.3 billion Naira (16 million US dollars)...."
Is 3.3 billion Naira=$16 million?
School Fees
OK WHAT DOES THE CAPTION PICTURE HAVE TO DO WITH THE CAPTION?
I respect Sahara Reporters but this is very unprofessional.
Those figures are not only for Ambassadors Children. It's for DIPLOMATS children.
Do you know how many diplomats Nigeria has?
The number of Nigerian Missions abroad is closer to 100 than it is to 200.
That "N5.2 MILLION" doesn't make sense.
The government doesn't pay tuition of children in the US & UK, for kids over 18 OR university fees.
So what happens to a diplomat in France? Should they leave their kids in Nigeria w/out parental supervision? No. They should be in France with their parents. Unfortunately they have to go to an English speaking school in France which would cost about $10,000 to $15,000. This is just the cost of diplomacy. It's not unique to Nigeria.
Its no news that Nigeria in
Its no news that Nigeria in Government office will always exploit any opportunities to milk our treasury, such is the case of the Ambassador, its no big news, please get us other news
Nigeria is Animal Farm
It is so embarrasing that despite the large abnormal salaries these ambassadors receive, government still pays the school fees of their children. This is bad and unfair to the nation. They should also start paying school fees for other public servants children. This is not fair. Yet the government is robbing us from every side just to make just few happy. God is watching
Shame on our past leaders. Shame
Shame shame shame on you... The diplomats. Do we hv american dippolmats children here in nigeria? Do we hv d france diplomats in sudan wit his family? They are all in their home countries scholing, why, becos they country's educaton is good. Shame on nija leaders. Shame on our past leaders....wo wo wow wo wo... Theives. Spend trillions of naira on ur children sch fees becos u are made a diplomates..while d tax payers children dnt even hv sit on their clases. Shame on our past leader. I detest u all. Come and contest again for president? Are u guys tired?
The house will have to
The house will have to investigate itself before inestigating the foreign ministry. Every ministry is defrauding the country, but the ringleader of fraud is the house. IN OUR BELOVED NATION THE EXECUTIVE, THE LEGISLATIVE AND THE JUDICIARY ARE CORRUPT, that is why almost everybody in almost all walks of life are debious in nigeria. Retributive justice, Nemesis and Kamma must decend from a great height and crush those who've being causing misery to the masses of our beloved nation into pieces. There will be such violence that the nation's security operatives will be overwhelmed and will not know what hit them, unless they are on the side of the masses.
Extravagancy of Nigeria Missions
Adebowale Adefuye is a typical taxpayer grabbing diplomat with his larger than life style of living junketing round the world with Firstclass between him and his wife. This man is so waste full that he is now known as the entertaining ambassador. always having one entertainment or reception for his goverment looting colleagues from Nigeria.
4.8bn school fees, 1 billion food & drinks budget for Aso Rock
Can any sane person call a place where this kind of financial atrocity is perpetrated, a country? Nigeria has been governed almost nonstop since independence like a "no-man's-land"; a jungle. Why would the whites not continue to believe that the blacks are a caused race, with happenings like this?
Nonsense
It is rather unfortunate, well the masses will pay through increase in fuel price in the name SUBSIDY REMOVAL. Shame unto Nigerians.
they will finish us
This cabals will finish us all, what are we goin to do?
You don't see the children of
You don't see the children of foreign diplomats in universities because their government pays only to secondary school level. Same with Nigerian government. Maybe sahara reporters should report their stories well so that people will understand better.
Democracy in Nigeria!
Just as an American defined democracy in Nigeria as a system in which the elites get 'what they want' anytime and anyhow. For goodness sake are their children the only human beings in Nigeria? Or are they the ones ment to inherit their parents position when they'r no more? We've better humans here that r much more brilliant and hardworkin than their wards. Infact majority of Nigerian students abroad turn to drug dealers and womanisers, live in private mansions n squander the economy wit purchase of cars, clothes, wines, gadgets and audition tickets. ASUU has been on strike for almost 2months, our universities never get to function for a full semester without any controversy. The situation keeps gettin worse and no one is sayin STOP! Just as Occupy Nigeria said: One day the poor will have nothin to eat but the rich.

SCHL FEES
Dont they, the parents get salaries ?. Just asking
Have you seen Nigerian Embassy in New York?
That's where all the money go and nothing else gets done. The embassy in New York looks like a Travel Agency shop with extremely obnoxious staff. They never pick up their phone, the recordings on the phone is a shame in the day of age. Nigeria owns the whole high rise building but the service section looks like a room & parlor in a face-me-face-you.
Then you wonder how they're spending billions on their kids school fees! I hope that SR will do a special report on Nigerian foreign missions soon.
This growing financial charade
"You need to get well-trained diplomats. Without training, you will not get good diplomats. Without training, there will be no results. We send some of them to Oxford, some to Italy as they will be competing with the best from the world,” he said.
Now I know we are just doing akpangoro-play but heck, what a growing charade. Everywhere you turn,it is a simple case of financial recklessness rather than the burden of state that is responsible for our penury. I am yet to understand what the foreign minister was aluding to when he made the statement quoted here.Do we now recruit our diplomats from the pool of diplomats'children?Just that I ask.
How come the governmen has to
How come the governmen has to pay for their school fees, is it now the responsibility of government to bank roll the school fees of all its' staff? if that is the case I think this fine gesture should be extended on an equal basis to all tax-paying Nigerian
Haba, my brother
Haba, my brother, if you have nothing to contribute in a topic you better stay silent. You have just succeeded in saying nothing. How can we join hands to build a nation that the leaders are corrupt? Did you read the news and understand what it is talking about here? Sorry and don't see my statement as insulting. I am just friendly!
After they will tell you that
After they will tell you that it is one cabal that is destroying Nigeria. They themselves are the cabal, don't look far for any cabal. The signs of their insincerity and conspiracy to loot is evident, while they spent 4.8 billion naira last year, they are budgeting 5.2 million naira for the same purpose this year!; that is an obvious conspiracy. Perhaps, it is a well established style. The same thing happened with fuel subsidy, about 250 million naira was budgeted but over 1.7 trillion naira was spent!. Very Fresh Air Indeed!
we should join hands in
we should join hands in bluiding our great country forward. God bless Nigeria
NO BODY PAYS FOR THE POOR!!!!
WE ALL KNOWS WHERE OUR MONEY GOES.ALL THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IN NIGERIA IS HELL CORRUPT.LET OCCUPY THEIR HOUSES AND KILL THEM ALL WITH THEIR FAMILIES.ANY THING LESS THAN THAT IS A MERE WASTE OF TIME.SINCE THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOG AND MONKEY.NIGERIA RULERS ARE ANIMALS!
