By SaharaReporters, New York

A reporter with the Daily Trust newspaper, Isa Sa’idu, has complained to the Nigerian Union of Journalists about being threatened on the phone this morning by the spokesperson of the Army’s 1 Division, Lt Colonel Abubakar Edun.

The complaint is contained in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Kaduna State Chapter of the NUJ by Mr. Sa’idu, who is the Bureau Chief of the Daily Trust Newspaper in the state.  In it, Mr. Sa’idu recalled last week’s explosions at military formations in Kaduna, which he attempted to report along with some other journalists.

At the event, he said that some soldiers barred the journalists from entering the 1 Division and threatened them with reprisals if they did not leave the premises.  They also seized the cameras belonging to their colleagues from the African Independent Television (AIT).

According to Mr. Sa’idu, that formed the subject of Lt. Col. Edu’s phone call to him this morning.

“The seizure of the cameras was widely reported by the media but I cannot figure out why Edun singled me out for questioning and even going further to issue a threat,” the reporter said in his complaint.

He said he was writing the letter in order to place the threat on the record, “especially the fact that he has categorically told me that his formation [has not been] happy with me since my days in Zaria as a reporter for Media Trust.”

Mr. Sa’idu said Lt. Col. Edun ended the call with the ominous words, “I made my point and you can go ahead to be writing whatever you like about us.  This was how you were reporting us when you were in Zaria.”

Army strongman tactics are not unknown in Nigeria, but since the country returned to civil rule, they have not often been in the news.

MEN IN UNIFORM OR WOMEMN?

ARE NIGERIAN MILITARY MEN REALLY MEN OR WOMEN? BECAUSE ALL EVENTS POINT TO THEM ACTING LIKE WOMEN.DO THEY THINK WE CONSIDER THEM MEN? WHAT A LAUGH,

Nigerian Military and Security abuse of Rights FoI

This has always been the style of the Nigerian Military and Security Organisations. They seen themselves as higher individuals. Your military base has been attacked, people died and you think covering it up is the best option?

They should be figuring out ways of equiping themselves with relevant skills and intellect like their counterparts around the world, not to be intimidating citizens whom are carrying out their legitimate duties.

Its a shame in this Nation; we have a document called "constitution" which also entitles every citizen their rights to information, but some ill-educated individuals in these military and security establishments, causing problems for innocent citizens and the general public. They should be concerned about the security of lives and property of citizens. If they are not competent enough for the job, the exit door is always open for them.

NO NEED TO FIGHT

Having read the journalist complaints and had the opportunity to speak with Lt Col Edun, I realised that the journalist blew this issue out of proportiion. People should try to balance their comment by hearing from the other side.
We should try the best to fight those responsible for the level of insecurity in the country rather than fighting those who are committed to moving the country forward.
Where there are disagreement, such issues can always be sorted out without making it look as if we are at war with ourselves.

Boko Haram is faceless

My brother note that boko haram is faceless, hence there is the need to counter check any intruder in your location. Nobody is harassing the journalists but they should know their limit.

We need obd2 auto diagnostic tools

The reason why we need the obd2 auto diagnostic tool is the need for curbing "mobile emissions". In tune with the need for global preservation, the EPA has been empowered to place firm emission standards. This has compelled the car manufacturers to bring in better non-polluting cars into the market. In turn, such strict measures for controlling emission levels have also helped to increase the functional life of the vehicle as well.

Gen Rommel, You are not a

Gen Rommel,
You are not a general. Are you? You see, your military men are jack booted thugs and nothing more. They are unmilitary in every sense. They steal, kill civilians and call innocent civilians 'bloody civilians.' In short, they are uncivilized. You are not a general like General Naaman of Assyria whom the prophet asked to wash himself seven times in River Jordan. If you and your men are asked to do such a thing you would bind the messenger with rope and cast him into that River, perhaps Argunugu River. General, do you know that your army is a paper tiger, they can't even defeat a battalion of Boko Haram mujahedeen?

Lt Col. Edun should focus on

Lt Col. Edun should focus on Boko Haram, and leave the Journalists to do their work. This is the 21st century.
That he is in the army is no big deal.
He should be allow to visit other countries in the civilized world, to enable him see how soldiers conduct themselves. It has come time for members of the Nigerian armed forces, and the Police to purge themseves of the stone age mentality; focus on the challenging situations in the country.

Boko haram should be top in his agenda now, not threatening a law abiding citizen doing his job.
We demand to know the truth, which I know the Nigerian army and Police always conceal.

Very Shocking

@ Tony A. I find it difficult to understand people like you, so in your opinion treat is the best option open to the spkoesman of the army, if he think the journalist is reporting lies can't he lay a complain with the newpaper? It's your type that makes governing the country very difficult.

If the spokesman for the Army will see nothing wrong with issuing treats to a journalist carrying out his assignment what do you then expect from the average korofo?

The Military should Communicate & not bully.

The Nigerian Military should learn that the Media is crucial for their operations & existence too. The Media & the Army Communications dept should have an agreed channel of exchanging information. In an absence of credible and working information channel; the media may be left to speculate. There should also be constant Military- Media parley to familiarise with each other & work with mutual respect. The Military should stop behaving like superior beings; the only reason why average Nigerian fears another Man in Uniform is due to poor Physical fitness state of average Nigerian population. In the Western World, being in Uniform doesn't guarantee that you can handle another Man in hand to hand Combat or even better in Armed Confrotation. The Military should concentrate on how to catch up with their peers in the rest of the World in Technology Acquisition & training.

The "Official" Version Must Be Corroborated!

During the Kosovo war, Gulf wars, Pentagon attack (911) and so on, independent reportage was seen worldwide. The press must "copliment" the official story line, word has it that soldiers died in the attack, and what do we get from the army as the casualty number/s? It is bologne to bar authenticating views of the free press, like they raided the offices of BBC, CNN & co during the subsidy demos. Was it Army TV that showed smoke billowing from the pentagon? Let the army release pictures of the "small windows" damaged in the attack. One bomber died, the other nko? Coffee, joor!

Army Spokesman threathens Reporter

You have to understand that the Military is an enduring tradition that does not change. With the situation now and the brazen effrontery of these 'Religious rodents' the military will have to be extra careful and they don't really owe anybody apologies for actions in the course of discharge of their duties. I am sure the journalists could have been overzealous in discharge of their duties too(honestly).

I am disappointed in the

I am disappointed in the Nigerian security agencies. Why transfer aggression to a hapless journalist who is diligent on his work? Do what you are supposed to do and no body will write a thing about you that you won't b comfortable with.

ARA

If you look carefully on the soldier's name tag on his shirt, you will see "ARA", which in IBO means "crazy". What else sums it up?

U dont need to report the Nigerian defence system

Mr journalist channel your energy to investigative reports on boko haram. Leave the army alone. The press of the Nigerian army should deal with this not u.

Journalist take am easy wo!!

Journalist that are posted to scene of explosion shold be vey careful with the way they cover their stories.we all know that boko haram issue is the rason why the security officers, gov't officials and the nigrian citizens have sleepless night.the nigerian army has promised the nation times without number that boko haram members will be arrested and be dealt with for the pain and suffering that they have caused innocent nigerians.unfurtunately they sect members went to their barrack and striked.so we should expect this kind of behaviour from them, the army find it very difficult to protect them selves from boko haram.can they protect nigerians from the boko haram sect?

Daily trust is the mouth piece of boko haram

Every 9ja including SR, knows Daily Trust is owned and operated by the Kaduna mafia aka BH. In addition to the paper being sympathetic to the evil ideals that BH stands for in the North, it also worrying that the paper is sowing the seed of discord in our society. Nonetheless, the army has all the rights in the world, to restrict them. The reporters did not seek audience with the army PRO, when they arrived at the scene if the incident. Even if the army did what is wrong with that? The trouble in the north, should not be compared to the Arab spring we have in Libya and Syria. Where people were hired to photoshop events for the globe to view on face book and u-tube among other social spy networks. When 9jas first saw the alleged killings of members BH and their leader on Aljazeera, some believed the story. Until it appeared here. That was when some started examing the pictures critically and discovered it was fake-another photoshop! So, carry on soldier man with d fight agianst BH!
