Nigerian Samuel Adeloju Invents Buoyancy Bazooka Which Could Save Lives At Sea-CNET

By Juniper Foo

So simple, yet so brilliant. Designer Samuel Adeloju's clever little idea of a life-saving ring that can be "shot" out to a drowning victim beyond the reach of a simple toss, has won him A$16,000 in the James Dyson Award against 14 finalists. The international design award aims at inspiring young people to design something that solves a problem.

Given that Adeloju hails from surf-happy Australia, one can guess at the inspiration floating his boat. The Longreach Buoyancy Deployment System works on the idea of a bazooka-like device that can fire a condensed bullet of hydrophobic foam up to 150m away, which then expands up to 40 times its size in water within a snappy 15 seconds. The kit is designed to be portable for carrying on boats and easy enough to employ in an emergency, thanks to printed instructions on it.

In case you're a lousy shot or there are more victims at sea, this carries two shots with a fast reload action. And in the event it's dark, this packs on Para-Flares for nighttime illumination.

The good news is that the Longreach Buoyancy Deployment System won't end up relegated to drawing board hell like so many other concepts. This is slated for actual field trials Down Under come the next few months, and it won't surprise us if it pops up on seafaring boats in the near future, with a starring role in an upcoming Baywatch movie.

Re: Aderoju is from Ogun state

Aderoju is from a small part of ogun state clan in west africa of nigeria, a peaceful town

Kudos

Back in the old days, there was healthy competition amongst the region in scientific expedition, intellectual rivalry but what do we have now. Divisions and political rivalry. Let us vote for leaders who have spent time abroad and understands how civilised countries work. Where justice and rule of law knows no person or bounds.
People who have been entrenched in nigeria way of life do no longer differentiate between 'corrupt' practices and culture. God help us and more kudos to nigerians like prof Adepoju.

Aussie to the core. Even his

Aussie to the core. Even his Day has been over there for yonks...see my post above

NICE ONE

I am so proud of you brother, keep your creative mind going and you will continue to excel.

GOOD WORK

Am proud of you brother, keep your creative going and you will continue to excel.

ADEPOJU

GOOD ONE, BROTHER.

MISGUIDED NIGERIAN YOUTHS

If the guy was in Nigeria, he would have been lost in the maze of reality shows like Naija Sings, Big Brother, Maltina Dance, Project Fame, Beauth Competition, Comedy Shows etc. Let us encourage development of science and technology and deemphasize arts and culture

Not bad

This is good news to hear we are moving . This kind of project are stuffs done in university fairs and they are not really invention they are combination of peoples inventions and discovery. But this goes a long way to show that Nigerians has potential to be great. It will be great to find a nigeria spear heading the Large Hadron collider project for instance .

We can do it.Even with bad leaders present .We can bloom in hostile situation that what we do best.

Thumbs up

Good job my brother. We Nigerians in diaspora wont stop doing our best to clean d name our corrupt leaders have soiled.

GREAT PEOPLE........THIEVING RULERS!

ONCE AGAIN, WE HAVE SHOWN THAT AS A PEOPLE WE ARE INGENIOUS..........THE PROBLEM IS OUR INEPT & CORRUPT RULERS!!!!

@ PERE

CONTROL yourself for once.

(Unless of course you also believe that Soyinka is Christopher Okigbo returned from the dead.)

Kudos budy! This is great

Kudos budy! This is great news for a change. This is actually a breath of fresh air for the young people of Naija

I think Adeloju is an igbo

I think Adeloju is an igbo man from Aba!!!

Good job! you don

Good job! you don try...refreshing news. there are much more smart folks in naija but they are supressed and oppressed by our stupid leaders.
God bless you'all

Brilliant! Absolutely Brilliant!!!

Kudos buddy.! More grease to your 'intelligent' elbow.

Congrats

Congrats buddy, if they dont value our skill at home, we take abroad and excel there.

THIS SOUNDS GREAT!!!!!!

we are happy a black man achieved this feat.

upcoming generations can draw inspirations from this. Afterall, all hope is not lost.

Hope Ciroma reads this.

Some positive news, at least a breath of fresh air.

Hope Ciroma and co reads this. Their generation is only interested in bigotry and stealing -breeding millions of almajiris and destroying so many raw talents in the process.

They love to flaunt themselves as elder statesmen demanding to be heard. They have not only wrecked everything good about Nigeria, they largely succeeded in corrupting the new generation -God help Nigeria.

The likes of Samuel shows there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Australia or Nigeria

Lets claim him fast even though he is Australian but of Nigerian heritage.

Clever Brains

This is a good one Sam, please keep the fire burning. We need people of your type on mother earth instead of war mongers.

Congratulations Adeloju!

My hearty congratulations to you, Sam. But you are not Australian but a Nigerian. Nigeria's loss is Australia's gain! Nigeria will keep losing people like you because our leaders do not know that having people like you begins with creating a high school environment that will nurture such talents. Our leaders care for their selfish ends far much more than they care for the ordinary Nigerian. Their policies are so steeped in selfishness that you wonder whether they have conscience at all.

In the 1950s up to the 60s, the regional governments gave out secondary school scholarships (free tuition, feeding, et. al) for deserving and intelligent students like you, but that is now in the past. A Nigerian physician in New Jersey, United States, told me that if he did not have Eastern Nigerian government scholarship for his secondary school education he would have been a village palm wine tapper! Today, because he is educated, his offsprings, four children, are all medical doctors. In addition, he has offered scholarships to three secondary and three university students hailing from his home town.

With all the revenue Obasanjo government collected from oil from 1999 to 2007, they never awarded a single secondary school scholarship. Nigerians foisted a man with the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of a ten years old as their President!! What do you get? What we got is what they call 'garbage in, garbage out'. I rest my case, my brother, God bless you.

Hehe, i like this. Lets use

Hehe, i like this.

Lets use it to shoot some ass

Of course, he will come from

Of course, he will come from Australia. Let him be a bomber or 419, then they will trace his origin to Nigeria.

Brilliant

Kudos to my fellow countryman. Nigerians can surely rule the World in Science and Technology if given the necessary support.Keep the flag flying brother, and God bless you for making us proud.

Congrats!

This is so cool..Welldone Sam!.Kudos to you..
There are many Sam Adelojus in Nigeria, but our bad leaders have failed to provide the enabling environment for these youngsters to blossom.
Many are sent to an early grave. The graveyards in Nigeria are filled with undiscovered geniuses, whose brilliant ideas were buried with them.

This is the kind of news we

This is the kind of news we love to hear..Not boko haram or Ciroma

Great!!

Very cool indeed. May this be the first of many from him. I'm proud and impressed.

Nigerians are the best brains

Nigerians are the best brains in the world. What they need is a condisive environment which a country that recorgnises corrupt politicians, can not give them. How many times have you heard of national awards being given to somone in Nigeria, because he did some thing, that projects Nigerian image to the world.
A professor emeritus, from Enugu State, invented voting machines two years ago, he shouted for recorgnition, until his voice became cracked, and no body listened. He is quiet, now. But if he was one illitrate, that dropped out of secondary school, stole some money and sponsored a candidate or rigged one election, he would have been given GCON. Failed nation!

Very Well done and

Very Well done and congratulations
