Nigeria's First Lady Patience Jonathan Sworn In As Bayelsa Permanent Secretary-PM News, Lagos
Governor Seriake Dickson went ahead today to swear in wife of Nigeria’s president, Dame Patience Jonathan as one of the new permanent secretaries in the president’s state of Bayelsa, ignoring an array of public condemnations.
At the ceremony today, Dickson insisted that he had “done nothing wring and illegal” and that Mrs. Jonathan merited the post.
Unlike the other permanent secretaries, Dickson did not announce a portfolio for her, saying it would be done at a later date.
Many Nigerians, including opposition politicians have condemned the appointment in strong terms.
Frank Oputu, state chair of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties said the “appointment greased with the oil of corruption” as the woman lacks the credentials to merit the appointment.
A permanent secretary heads a ministry and is the accounting officer.
In her response after the swearing-in, Dame Patience Jonathan justified her acceptance of the promotion to the office of a Permanent Secretary in the civil service of the Bayelsa State government saying that outside her role as the wife of the President she deserves and reserves the right to pursue her career to its heights.
She said that she wasn’t the first person in such position in the world or the country to pursue a career outside her role as a wife of a political office holder.
She said that she was last promoted 13 years ago even though she had been working in the state as a teacher before transferring her service to the ministry of education.
She disclosed that she had been working as a teacher before she met her husband who was her lecturer in school. She wondered what the uproar about her appointment was all about when her role as the First lady of the federation was not even constitutional and the fact has been drummed to her hearing by several people.“When it suits them, they will say we don’t have office. Remember when I went to Lagos for peace advocacy, the Governor of Lagos State said that my husband should call me to order since my office is not in the constitution and that I have no office. Why now won’t I pursue my career that I am sure of?“
“We the wives of political office holders, if our name is not in the constitution and our husbands will retire with full benefits then they should find a role for us when they are amending the constitution. They should look into our own affairs,” she said.
I am laffing my a** off. Is
I am laffing my a** off. Is she meeting heads of state through her own power? If she was not first lady would she be able to carry on a clear conversation with a bank manager? Do you know how many times she has embarrassed herself her husband and her country in front of these same heads of state? I am still laffing.. She spent about 5 years in the civil service. So being married to the president who cannot even perform his own duties now qualifies her to be a perm sec? I can't believe Nigerians are getting so shallow in thought
Barrister indeed. It is your
Barrister indeed. It is your type that attended the type of university the first lady attended. Working in the civil service and then becoming first lady does not qualify you for the position of Perm Sec. How would you applaud such nonsense? As u also agree that she can't construct simple english you would still favour her appointment as perm sec? And you wonder why Nigeria can't progress. Its because there are still so many Nigerians like you who still support this type of primitive backwards thinking
55 trillion stolen from the
55 trillion stolen from the SS?.. So people like Ibori, Odili Alameisegha abi wetin be dat hin name sef no get hand inside abi? Ur leaders steal from u pple and all u do is blame fulani and north like the illiterate primitive fools that u are.. I'm not talking about all SS pple but the animals like u that don't know how to break from slavery. No be today bayelsa state don dey embarrass naija. Ur sitting governor dressin up as a woman to escape arrest in London. First lady lying about goin to skool. And u are here happy that she's appointed PS as if its some grand achievement.. Live up to ur name 'SS' (So Sick) pple. Very soon when oil becomes irrelevant in the world u and the remaining animals there will be begging Dame for crumbs frm her pension
Perm Sec? So Easily?
If she did work as a teacher in the the state civil service and did not resign but went on leave then of course she is still deserving of her position in the CS. But take into consideration when she started her CS career and relate it to the 13 years she's been away.. She still has quite a minute before she attains the level of perm sec. She got an NCE in '89 and a Bachelors in an unknown year. Why is the year of the bachelor's unknown when the year of an older certificate is known. Is the bachelor's not more important than the NCE? Anyway it is safe to say she taught from around 1993 up to 1999. During which she also left the civil service to start up a community bank. She came back in 97 to 99. So in about 6 years, she most likely spent 3 (max- 5years) with the civil service. 5 plus the 13 since she's been on leave makes 18 years. In which history of Nigeria has someone starting from a low level made perm sec in 18 years? Where are her mates from 1999?
come to look at it the first
come to look at it the first lady is making sense.her office is not been recognized in the 1999 constitution.if she has been a civil servant since then according to her..then what are we talking about.people saying that she does not speak well,go around the globe most world leaders cant even make a sentence in english.
fellow Nigerians we should applaud our first lady for attaining a good height in her career.
Stop insulting yourselves and face the issue
@ you all... Rather than waste valuable time insulting yourselves over issues that you can do nothing about. I would advise we continue in concrete and constructive criticism of the issue and stop insulting yourselves as the 1st lady has since been sworn in as PS. There is always the bigger picture in poliitics which most of you have failed to comprehend. Why was she made a PS knowing fully well that by our constitution, the President, his wife and children will be catered for for life, she ofcourse doesnt need it for whatever reason, but very soon in no distant future many of you will know why she was made a PS today. However, the question I would like to get answer for is, which ministry was she posted to, is she going to assume duty immediately in Bayelsa and close down the office of the first lady or would she be the accounting officer of a ministry in Bayelsa from Aso rock in the office of the first lady?
nigeria's first lady patence jonathan...
May God deliver us from rulers who do not have the courage to take right decisions like prosecuting oil marketers who have robbed the country of billions of dollars rather they foot-dragging to allow public ire to blow away and they will forget about it, but are quick to carry out absurd decisions like making a first lady perm sec. Nigeria we hail thee.
your yard stick was wrong
I agree with you that it is very wrong to insult the First Lady; and the guy who did shouldnt have. But the first lady's meeting with a lot of heads of state can never make her a better administrator by any standard. I thnk thats a beggerly yardstick for measuring competence. Some 20 or 30 minutes of pleasantry with a head of state or two doesnt award a person certificate for administrative competence. Put up a better arguement pls
illiterate perm second patience Jonathafn
The woman said GEJ was her lecturer when she was at the university. We all now this woman cannot read or write English. So if you put 2x2 that should give you the answer. Have you not heard if lecturers who pass their students?. One favour for another. This my friend is why madam is an illiterate if though she claims to be a university graduate
Nigerians deserve the government
I read through some of the comments. Most of the accusations didn’t present any fact on it – qualification, experience, service years, promotion steps, etc. My best attempt at this is from Wikipedia: "Jonathan started her career as a teacher at the Stella Maris College, PH and Sports Institute Isake. She then moved to the banking sector in 1997, where she established the first community bank in PH called the Akpo Community Bank. She served as Marketing Mgr of Imiete Community Bank. She returned to the classroom briefly again as teacher. Eventually she was transferred to the Bayelsa State Min. of Education, where she served until 29 May 1999” Most other sources tend to agree that she had her NCE in 1989 and that she left Civil Service in 1999. So if this is right, 10 yrs from NCE to PM position - very interesting!! As some said, It is Bayelsa state and Bayelsa palaver. Issues in Nigeria are Nigerian issues and hence Nigerian palaver! We definitely deserve the govt we have!
Who told u that civil
Who told u that civil servants are exempted from declaring their assets? Am a civil & i declare my assets every 4 years. Say only what u know & don‘t mislead the public.
The reason for this
The reason for this appointment is not far fetched. It is meant to shield madam from asset declaration that seems inevitable for President Jonathan. Civil servants are apparently exempt from asset declaration, so the woman has run for cover.
My friend keep quiet
Deri or whatever u call urself, keep quiet and stop mentioning igbo people on whatever u are speaking bcos they saw all this things when it was stil far, but u people were so myopic and greedy dat was why u were a sell out to the hausa fulanis to stop the freedom, pls stop lamenting i thought u people love slavely. U dat call on ceaser, ceaser shall u answer.
SR, ITS BETTER YOU SPEND YOUR TIME RESEARCHING THIS BELOW
How can we discuss national
How can we discuss national issues when already you are insulting the 1st lady? U want us to table matters concerning the nation for discourse but u are saying right here in our presense that the first lady cannot speak good english. So how can we relate with your type? The trouble with most of you is that you think she is infirior to you. The woman had met with lots of heads of state. She can use her wealth of experience to bring progress to the state. So I think the governor did the right thing. Above all, the SS will be better off, out of naija than inside. How can u relate with people who have little or no respect for you? Appreciated only when they are awarded contracts or eat from you.
@DERI,ABACHA WAS NOT ELECTED.
There you go again, you cannot recognise the incompatiability of Abacha and Jonathan so I wonder if it will be worthwhile going futher in any civilised exchange with you.
Abacha was a northern thief with a gun while the PDP are rogues who exploit our so called democracy and rape our commonwealth.
I did not exonorate Abacha in my last comment,I used the english word "predecessors",I will not accept corruption as a way of governance no matter how you try to justify the issue. The Jonathan administration has been defined largely by the fact that there is no political will to stamp out corruption in a resolute manner,I shall not dwell on tribal issues here, cheers.
Some of u are jobless.
Some of u are jobless. Instead of discussing how 2 move our nation forward, u are discussing SS, SE, SW and north trash. The issue on ground has nothing 2 do with d inter-tribal trading of offensive words u guys are engaging in. Can this woman, who finds it difficult 2 express herself clearly in English language handle d post of a PS effectively? How did she even bcom a teacher in d first place?
JOKE;;;
This woman is a joke;;;;imagine, she even had the guts to trade words with the gov of lagos st,AN ELECTED OFFICIAL..
PDP and ACN, birds of the same feather
No difference between the thieves ruling Nigeria.
The only thing is for our people to cast religious and tribal sentiments aside and vote for a credible candidate like Buhari.
Read the link below to see how Nigerians are being taken for mugs by their rulers.

We want results
I see this appointment as a confer-ment of public honours.
We want results not just public honours.
@deri this people are paid agents of buhari
These people are all paid agents of Buhari. Imagine a president that is only one yr old. Look at the way he is being abused. Its started from day one with Turai. So no matter what you say or do, it will not change their colonial mentality against him. They believe Jonathan was not supposed to have aspired to the post of president. Nothing he will do that will change their mind. They pretend to want Buhari and Tinubu not because they believe they will do better. But know they can control their minds. Has Buhari not being there before? What was his achievements. With them the oil companies will have a free ride. That is why they dont want us to break. They will starve to death should that happen.
osita DIOKA is jonathan as corrupt as abacha yr uncle
@Osita, was jonathan the one who stole our 55 trillion since 1957-IBB introduced the fuel scam-the food contractors in aso rock are not ijaws. None of the fuel scammers come from the SS. Dangote, Donjuma, Emeka Offor, Orji Kalu, Adenuga, Andy Uba were already wealthy b4 GEJ became president-he was not the person who spent over $17b for light which never was-neither did he clone Farouk and Bonface. All these intimidations are just being done by the Fulanis Ibos and YORUBAS to enable them take control of the oil wells- off-shore oil-- when there is oil spill does it flow to the North, East or the west? Is it not to the SS of 9ja? We are just wasting time with each other--the population of kuwait is only 900,000-let us split--quietly! why are we scared of going ou separate ways-u stay in yr state I relax in mine-with my Iboris-and madam Dame-any trouble
Unity based on sweet oil from the SS wont last-let my people go
Who is the fool when a state governor makes appiontments in his state, then you come here to order the governor about-are u not mad? what is your business with matters concerning bayelsa state. Are you from Bayelsa--quote the law which says the governor has no right to appiont the wife of the president as PS. Yours is to enforce the belief that we are still in bondage of timidity. Those niger deltans who think they are welcome in the 9ja of the fulanis, yoruba and ibos need to have their heads examined. No state in the USA would allow such rubbish. Because they already have resource control-- fiscal federalism in place--u dont want such in 9ja-how can u want to have a place for the first lady-go and ask the wife of tinubu and his inlaw to resign-animals
u look stupid with your
u look stupid with your arguement my friend- we have had civil servants seconded to the UN for over 20yrs and return to their duty post. This is not the first time its happening. During the Abacha era we saw officers remain at post for over 10yrs at d foreign missions. Cases have been investigated and officers suspended for more than 12 yrs and recalled when they were not found wanting-this is not about the one million civil servants fired by Buhari. Its a state affair. And the state has decided to recall her worker for essential services- what concerns lagos state with such matters, If not bad belle? Was Biu not re-enstated into the police force even though he was directed to be dismissed? Its only when an ijaw is involved that is when you raise yr voice to the heavens for all to hear you
Madam perm sec
Legally and morally, its wrong for madam dame to be so appointed, even if she is a civil servant as we were made to understand, she had left her duty post since 1999 which is about thirteen years ago as wife of the deputy governor up to first lady today, so she has lost touch with the ethics of a civil servant and she cannot fulfill the obligation of a perm sec effectively. But I thought they said this woman did not go to school that is why she cannot speak correct English, so how come she rose to the level of a director? the more you look, the less you see. Nigeria I hail thee
I wonder y every one is just
I wonder y every one is just making hell of noise. Are all new in this country. The governor wants som'um from Jona and to get it, he has to give som'un. That is the game. Is either you play it or it plays you. In Nigeria, nothing is impossible.
QUALIFICATION IN NIGERIA?
Dont give me that crap about qualification. This is Bayelsa problem not a national one. Everyday people on this forum cry for true federalism yet the cant even respect a simple state right. If the Governor want to make the Firstlady permanent secretary in her state I dont care.People that think Dickson is stupid dont know jack. This is Nigerian politics, it is ugly. It is what it is.Qualification in Nigeria? what the heck is that? When Buhari decided to overthrow a duly elected civillian Government was he qualified? All these past military leaders that ran Nigeria into the ground were they qualified? If I asked you if Jonanthan is qualify we all know what your answer on this forum will be. So let it be.
COMPLAINT, COMPLAINT, COMPLAINT.
You guys are compaining at home but these people are doing thier thing.
@DERI,JONATHAN WILL COME AND GO BUT NIGERIA REMAINS.
The Nigerian political leadership is possibly the most corrupt in the world,a lot of things happen here which can only be dreamt of in most irrelevant banana republics of the world. You are concerned with your Ijaw locality but most Nigerians are concerned about"NIGERIA".
President Jonathan by virture of his position has become an epitome of the monumental corruption, same goes for his predecessors, they are going to leave a legacy which will either hunt them for the rest of thier lives and after or hail them in like manner.
If your calculation is based on the presence of natural resources in the SS,well you are unrealistic because the SS is the biggest casualty of our corrupt system, how many offshore and onshore explosions happened this year alone?stop being a jerk.
polution from Deri
This shameless and senseless Deri of a man is poluting this forum. We are tired of his alcoholic comments. I have said it before that nothing good can come from a people whose their best food is alcohol and pork meat. These two things are part of their DNA content so the influence in their characters. This can be confirmed from Deri's comments and Jonathan's speech. This is absolute madness. The shameless woman confessed that she will do whatever dickson ask her to do. That is if Dickson ask her to share bed with him, she will do. I weep for my coutry!
