Following the postponement of today’s National Assembly election, the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been told to step down by the Nigerian Human Rights Commission.

A statement issued today and signed by Roland Ewubare, the executive director of the agency, said, "Prof. Attahiru Jega's position as Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is no longer tenable. He must now step down immediately in the national interest."

Prof. Jega is under fire from several sectors of the Nigerian society over the massive failure of the first leg of the 2011 elections.

Unlawful sack

Recently MRS OIL NIG PLC, sack about 30 worker without pay in name of cutting down cost. But the Managing director the same company that want to bring down cost, receives 4million as monthly salary which is even more than the president official salary. The workers are not up to 6month old. Many of the victims are now in hospital. Nothing is wrong in laying off worker but the company must give them like 6 months salary. As u take up this case God wil bless u pple

food for thought

With the political structure prevalent in Nigeria, the country is likely heading to a big turmoil. To my mind nothing can save Nigeria other than return to fiscal federalism. Nowadays the military replaced it with unitary government in order to have enough funds to fight off Biafra. After the war, successive military rulers for parochial motivations continued with unitary government. Nigeria can never prosper with unitary govt. It is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country. It must evolve a fiscal federal structure where some 20 to 30% of revenues from mineral and vat may be paid to a lean central government. With fiscal federalism, most of this vice of not rendering account to those being led must be drastically reduced. Politics for some people is now the only job. No country ever survives this way.

THE 2011 ELECTIONS.

Oh the Nigerian Human Rights Commission is still alive? Where were you all this while when hundreds of Nigerians are arrested on flimsy grounds and rushed to Abuja only to be releaswed without any charges?
It is easy to criticise but lets face it Jega accepted responsibility and apoligised. How many NIGERIAN EXECUTIVES ecer accepted the consequences of a short coming and aplogised? Probably in a n effort to keeep safe the ballot materials, INEC gave little considration to the likelihood of a failure. hence the embrassing gaffe. Many an excutive will have started balming sabotuersad invisble opponents but this man aceepted fault anf apoligised, Even if he resigns whop do you want to complete the elections? Tghe Government appointed Resident Commissioners or the Bureaucrats. amny of whom are either politicians? Let us not ge too sentimental; afterall, we do not havve to throw away the baby with the bath water!

The Nigeria's Human Rights

The Nigeria's Human Rights Commission does not have the locus standi to ask Jega to resign when it derives all its resorces from the PDP government. We, the orniary Nigerians, have confidence in INEC and believe that the election was postponed for a good reason. Mr Director of Human Rights Commission should concentrate on the gross injustices and human right abuses being perpetrated, in some cases, with the full connivance of his pay master´s apparatus in places like Jos, Borno and Niger Delta. We will have a free and fair election this time around.

Jega : Success shall be yours

Nigerians, pls., let us not castigate this man. He demonstrated honest and sense of responsibility. We should credit him for this. This is a big task. He needs our support and prayer. We should not give the politicians and their agents the opportunity to run this election down. Lets give Jega the support that will aid his work. We should realise that he did not appoint those working with him, some of them dont want him to succeed b'cos they are working for their masters. Look at the so called Human Right Commission Head, opening is mouth to tell Jega to step down. It is a sign that some people want this election scuttled. Jega, you shall succeed by Gods grace. All those looters, that call themselves politicians should be voted out.

Election Postponement

Nigerians, pls., lets credit Jega instead of castigating him. We should all support him to succeed. Conducting an election is not a child's play. Jega, whatever, I stand by you. Dont dance to the politicians b'cos they want to will at all cost, they are not going there to serve the people. Jega, I stand by you. Do whatever you thing will give us credible election. Nigerians, pls, lets support him, whatever the shortcomings. The so called Human Right Commission chief executive should be mindful of his statement at things point in time. Nigerians will not accept any bias government agent to request the step down of Jega. That is not the stage we are now. We want to move forward not backward. If you are sent by masters, be sure you will fail. Jega carry on. Just be honest and be fair to all. Nigerians are expecting the best of election through you. God will help you oooo.

HUMMAN RIGHT CONFUSSION.

IT IS BETTER FOR POSTPONEMENT OF ELECTION TO RIGGING.
WHERE ARE SO CALLED HUMAN RIGHT COMMISSION 2007 WHEN RIGGING WAS ORDER OF THE DAY. INSUFFICIENT OR DELAY IN SUPPLY OF ELECTION MATERIAL HAPPEN IN 2007 BUT MAURICE IWU CONDUCTED THE ELECTION WHICH WAS FLOOP. NOW JEGA SUSPEND AND SO CALLED HUMAN RIGHT COMMISION WHICH SHOULD BE HUMAN RIGHT CONFUSSION OPENING THEIR MOUTH TO CONVENIENT RADIUS INSTEAD TO BE PATIENT AND WE ALL HAVING CREDIBLE ELECTION.
BEHOLD OLD THINGS HAVE PASSED AWAY AND NOW EVERYTHING IS NEW. JUST LET HAVE CREDIBLE ELECTION NOT JUST RIGGING PALAVER.

@Otunba Balogun

If you think the rampant exam malpractice that give you good resultis an indication of knowwledge, Show me what you have done in your part of the country which suggest you are better than others.

separation is the answer not election

The Vice Presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Tunde Bakare, at the weekend said that he queried the presidential aspiration of Ribadu from the very beginning, because according to him, Ribadu’s credentials as ex boss of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), are questionable.

He said he and his group preferred Nasir El- Rufai and ex Cross River Governor, Donald Duke, or Oby Ezekwesili, to fly the AC flag but both men declined.

Bakare who vowed to reveal some dirt about Ribadu soon, recalled a forum of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG) in the United Kingdom. According to Bakare, his reaction was one of bewilderment when Ribadu announced his interest to run.

The fiery pastor who flirted with the Action Congress Congress (AC) before joining the CPC said ‘You want to rule Nigeria? Who will be your subjects?’ I asked him. And he drove me to my hotel room that day and we spent two hours in his car. I began to lay the things before him that were wrong.”

Apparently questioning Ribadu’s anti-graft credential, Bakare said: “And all this anti-corruption ‘Czar’? We have stories that we can tell, but we will keep quiet now until the appropriate time.”

why all this uproar about a postponement

Why is everybody castigating Prof Jegga for postponing the election till Monday to avoid giving politicians reason to void the election. If the different political parties opposing PDP are seriously in contention for the positions they should all suck it up and mobilise their supporters to go back to the polls on monday period.

This is not about Jega

As for that fake otunba who opened his trap to talk trash about northerners, your ignorance precedes you and you have been adequately answered according to your foolishness. Jega is doing all he can to ensure a free and fair election and I support him but the system is bad.

Shame on the dehuman rights

Shame on the dehuman rights commission. how quich cowards come forth to condemn brave patriots. let ewubare or whatever he is called go and face the massive problem of prison decongestion and awaiting trials before taking panadol for other peoples' headache. As for INEC, i sympathise with them. is this not the major problem of the country - non performing contrators? the contractor should be damnified with damages for the loss caused by the tragic fairy tale event. he should be charged to court for treason. period.
i have a strong feeling that this has been one of the rigging tactic since 1999. has there not always being non voting for lack of materials? perhaps iwu and guobadia would have carried on the with the election and lie to nigerias that there were result sheets when there wasn't. nigerias must appreciate brave and honests men if we must put the dishonest to shame.

Inexcusable

There is no defence whatsoever for Jega's dismal outing. He allowed people to go to polling booths. Movement was restricted. The huge cost of deploying security aparatus. The billions of man hours lost and the cost to the economy. The frustration to the electorate. In all these Jega new that voting materials are not available. This aspect of the election is just too important and elementary to bungle. It has also been the failures of past electoral bosses.
It must be said also that Jega received the most support as an electoral boss in the the history of Nigeria elections. He got a free hand. When he wants money he gets it. When he wants the law changed he gets it in record time. When he want things imported he gets all the waivers. He wanted all the security aparatus deployed? He got it. Nobody argued with him.
This is because Nigerians including this PDP government wanted a FREE, FAIR,AND HITCH FREE ELECTION
His failure therefore can only be blamed on incompetence. Period. He did not show any eviedence of having learnt from the Delta election which he also bungled big time.
Of course the honourable thing to do is resign. Failure is failure. Even if you give a million excuses, it is still failure. Just Go, Jega.

Re: Billions wasted

I agree with you 100% for agreeing that Jega should step down after the billions wasted to conduct the elections even though the elections were only postponed and would be re-sheduled on Monday 4th of April. This should be the stepping stone.
In addition to this, i want you to also agree with me that all NEPA officials should step down with immediate effect due to the trillions of Naira wasted without results. And the Presidency and National assembly, incompetent state governors, etc should ALL step down with immediate effect!!! How many trillions of naira have been wasted in this country without results??? Enough is enought, abi???

What do you say?

Almost all of us (except the

Almost all of us (except the few riggers) believ that INEC has always failed, but no one is taking responsibility. Now that we have someone bold enough to take responsibility and willing to correct his mistakes we are trying to crucify him. If JEGA resigned , who do you have for us there that will face rigging the way he is doing?

otumba is right

Its true what otumba balogun said about Northern professors and adukashun. You dare not say it to their hearing or they will amputate your mouth and call u wawa-kawai. Thats our luck

This is not the first time

This is not the first time INEC claims no electoral materials at polling stations. This is not the first time only half of required materials are sent to polling unit. It is just the first time INEC thinks it can not cook up result in place of those missing materials and I think it is better than what happens before.

prof need a prayer

after all, you could not make any different after long time study of the past chairmen mistakes. is really a big blow on your career, i think you need more degree. i don't think you need any body to tell you that you need to revile the secret for your failure to save you from this international disgrace.

Ewubare must resign. He's a PDP agent

This Ewubare is speaking like a senseless drunk. It is simply stupid for any person to make the kind of inane outburst Ewubare has made. Ewubare is behaving like a PDP thug. Only the PDP are happy with the attempt by their mafia within INEC to frustrate the electoral process. Thanks to Jega, the pro-PDP mafia has failed. Nigerians should be very vigilant. Jega is a true patriot by refusing to succumb to the desperate attempts by the ¨PDP to rig the NASS election. Ewubare is one of these sinister buffoons who collect "easy money" from the election riggers of the PDP and talk rubbish. This clown called Ewubare should be the one to resign for abusing his position by making a brazenly ignorant and unpatriotic statement in support of the very corrupt and anti-people PDP. Prof Jega is loved by the majority. Nigerians support Jega who is helping them to prevent rigging by the PDP. Shame on Ewubare and his paymasters in the PDP! Nigerians will protect their votes from the PDP riggers and their errand boys like Ewubare.

WHERE HAS ROLAND EWUBARE, THE

WHERE HAS ROLAND EWUBARE, THE DIRECTOR OF Human Rights Commission, BEING ALL THIS WHILE. WE NEVER HEARD THIS ORGANIZATION SPEAKING OUT AGAINST HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION. NOW HE HAS FOUND HIS FEET TO CALL FOR JEGA'S RESIGNATION. TO ME THIS IS THE NEW ASSOCIATION FOR BETTER NIGERIA (ABN). YOU REMEMBER THE GROUP THAT WENT TO COURT TO STOP THE 1993 ELECTIONS? ROLAND EWUBARE AND HIS HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION REPRESENTS THAT BODY. THE GOAL IS TO PREVENT JEGA FROM CONDUCTING ONE OF THE FREEST ELECTIONS OF THE PAST 12 YEARS.

Response to - ' What human right did Jega violate today?

The right to vote and be voted for.

12 REASONS WHY WE MUST REJECT PDP

In 12 years, PDP has been in power; all the party has to show for it are:
• Unemployment
• Insecurity (Assassinations, Bombings, Kidnappings, Political Violence, Terrorism)
• Corruption
• Electoral Fraud
• Power Failure
• Inflation
• Religious Crises
• Poor Leadership (How does a party that can’t address its leadership problems, aspire to lead the country?)
• Educational Decay
• Poor Infrastructure
• Poor Health Services
• Disunity & Failed Promises
If you vote for the PDP, you'll get more of this, and of course, more contempt for democracy, and more neglect of the priorities of Nigerian families and youth. The only alternative to a PDP government is a compassionate, responsible, and responsive government.

Expect more inteligent northerners.

Mr Balogun because you did not deserve any Balogun Title as far as I am concern, If you should fault Professor Jega. I don't think you are being fair to the Northerners as a people, you suppose to blame Jega based on facts not fiction, while am not holding brief for Jega. I will like to advise you to please limit your self to issues instead of generalizing. Professor Jibril Aminu attended OAU and passed with flying colors,he excelled in his carrier likewise Sanusi graduated from King's College Lagos in 1977 and studied at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria earning a BSc in Economics in 1981. He obtained an MSc in Economics in 1983, and then taught economics at ABU from 1983 to 1985. He studied in Sudan and worked in New York and UK. Lastly northerners are not after qouta as you stated, check your facts, my advice to you is check your facts before you write. May be I might address you next time as Otunba.

DUMB OTUNBA BALOGUN

It's only dumb people like you that can say anything stupid that comes to their head. what do you know about people from the North? You think to speak English is the bottom line abi? Who told you Sanusi Lamido schooled abroad? You are so so dumb wallahi! FOOLISH 45 YEARS OLD MAN YANNING RUBBISH! What degree do you have? It's only dumb and greedy people that love titles like you have displayed above.

UNFORTUNATE BUT THINGS HAPPENS!

To some commentators here using remarks that are outright biggoted or shall I say tribalistic. Prof Jega at least come out to say things gone wrong and my fear is that are we now saying he should have gone ahead pretend and fake results just as Maurice Iwu did in several areas that elections were not held in 2007. Quite frankly, anything about Nigeria cannot be compared with established democratic countries because all we've got resembles Iran-styled democracy where decision are made by chosen few. Elections are more of formality to appease the general public and international stakeholders. I can say with clear conscience that the type of crowds may have something to do with this and knowing that election materials were available in states not held by PDP in last election suggests that interference may have occured. Personally, I resent some people view that because Jega is a Northerner then he lacked adequate education because he allegedly benefitted from some alleged University admission quota system. This is totally uncalled for and God bless Nigeria.
