NLC Condemns Invasion By Government Thugs, Sudden “Militarization” of Abuja
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has condemned today’s invasion of its Secretariat in Abuja by about 70 thugs who were hired by agents of the government.
It also alerted the nation to what it called the “militarization” of Abuja.
“As part of its desperate moves to abort the peoples mass protests and intimidate Nigerians, the Presidency this morning turned out heavily armed units of the Presidential guards,” NLC Acting Secretary General Owei Lakemfa said in a statement. “The troops blocked roads, condoned off parts of the city, harassed and frisked passersby.”
He condemned the misuse of the army and a “show of force” it said was designed to intimidate peace loving Nigerians, warning that members of the police and the armed forces are equally affected by the negative impacts of the fuel price hike.
On the presence of the thugs at Labour House, Mr. Lakemfa said the aim was to cause a fracas which would lead to claims that workers are divided over the issue of fuel price increase. He said the thugs later apologized, claiming they had not been told they were being taken to the NLC.
“They revealed that they were promised One Thousand Naira (N1,000) each to carry out the invasion,” he said. “Subsequently, they forced the agents that brought them to pay the N1,000 fee right in the presence of the cameras.”
He regretted that during the invasion, the FCT Police Command ignored calls by NLC officers to come and deal with the situation, and that the heavily armed security men who had condoned off parts of the area also did nothing to stop the invaders.
“The NLC views this incident as another desperate attempt by the increasingly isolated and unpopular Jonathan administration to stop the mass movement against its insensitive and ridiculous fuel price increases of between 120-220 per cent,” Mr. Lakemfa said
The NLC also noted that fraudulent text messages were sent around earlier in the morning, containing the fiction that the government had reversed the price of petrol back to N65, on the strength of which it was said that the Labour Movement had called off the action scheduled for next Monday.
“The NLC informs Nigerians that on this issue of strikes and protests, only statements or messages from the Labour Movement should be taken as authentic,” the statement said.
It reaffirmed the right of Nigerians to peaceful assembly and protest as a fundamental one which no government can abridge, and vowed that the NLC will work with the Nigeria Bar Association to bring those who brutalize Nigerians, and their bosses who issue the orders, to justice.
Petrol subsidy removal & NLC/TUC et al protest
In my opinion, d 'common Nigerian' who the protest seek to protect from the scourge of the subsidy removal will be the first victim and casualty of the strike action. Again, should 'he' per chance be arrested by security operatives in the course of the protest, it will be second degree wahala for him (the common Nigerian). I sincerely think that what the champions of the protest should have done is take a shot at Mr Presidents proposals; by inviting him to a round table, one similar to 'the town hall meeting', get him to spell out in very clear terms the objectives of the subsidy removal and how he intends to cushion its effect on the ordinary Nigerian (WHO HE REPRESENTS IN THE SCHEME OF THINGS) and a schedule/time table for its achievement AND! get Mr President to 'OFFER TO RESIGN' should he fail to keep to his promises like his predecessors (which is crux of the matter), rather than consider protest which in my opinion will cost very much more to labour, Govt, & the common Nigerian
GOOD PLAN BUT BAD TIMING
In my opinion, I think govt has a good plan but the timing was very bad.
He should have sensitized the public about the need of this subsidy removal, implemented the minimum wage, penalizing any govt that fails to implement it, ensure constant power supply, increase security of lives of the citizens to a very large extent before removing fuel subsidy.
Perharps, we should give him a benefit of doubt and see what happens

this struggle is not against Jona but against oppresion by the thieving ruling class.Ghana increased pump price of petrol few years ago and their country did not shut down bcos their govt is sincere. stupid ifeanyi-democracy
"Imagine even the Nigerian medical Association( of Doctors) joining the stupid nationwide strike. Imagine how many ordinary folks who will be left unattended to in hospitals and DIE as a result of even one day strike by doctors."
You sound like you are concerned for the poor. Have you asked yourself what will happen to a sick man who cannot afford the transport to go to the hospital? Or have you asked what happens to this poor who spends all he has to transport himself to hospital which should better be described as consulting points and cannot afford to buy any of his medications? Even in places where free drug programs are run, only children below 5yrs and pregnant women benefits, what's more you hardly see any of the drugs. I work in the setting, I know what I am saying.
You are such a stupid fellow I don't know what name to call you. Go ahead and support GEJ, soon you'll hear news of your poor mother in the village died because she couldn't affort TP or money to get his drugs.
SHOW YOUR FORCE TO BOKO HARAM!!
I naively campaigned for GEJ. But it was a terrible mistake. It is apparent this administration is a failure. Power belongs to d people but since he deceitfully ambushed Nigerians & snatched power from d people, he inadvertently endorsed his imminent impeachment. He is perplexed about d way forward; it is obvious GEJ is nauseatingly incompetent to administer this Country. Nigerians must gear up for d mother of all protest. What happened to our revenue from crude oil sales? Why must fuel subsidy be removed capriciously? Why should we have 2 Ministers in a Ministry with several aids? Why has GEJ not removed “subsidy” on the cost of governance? The only dividend of democracy d masses enjoy is fuel subsidy. Where will 1,600 buses be deployed to? What a joke INDEED. This policy is premature; at this stage, it will destroy Nigerian; it will turn bedrooms to war zones for couples; it will create more terrorists & armed robbers!
The deceit continues
First was a so-called "subsidy" already hammered while a president tells his compatriots he was still "consulting" and now it's "Nigerians have the right to protest", at least as credited to him but what do Nigerians get while attempting to get their grievances known peacefully? All out militarized presence with beatings and dehumanization. Double betrayals.
Now, those who believed the president would be true to his person and move away from his murderous PDP party know better. Nigerians must remain strong. emotanafricana.com
To hell with you
Please tell us how the govt manage the diesel subsidy fund it removed over years... If we fail to block the PMS subsidy removal the same thing will be applied as with the diesel...

@ Ifeanyi-Democracy
You sound like someone who is senseless without direction. Revolution must take place in Nigeria. You'll be surprised when things turn around after the revolution.
you are a fool
You are an ignorant fool, is the protest going on in north alone, or do you think we the northerners are scared of such conference, to hell let the nation be divided who cares, if the government realy wants to remove subsidy it should make good use of the resources available to it first then it will gain the trust of the masses an and start by increasing the fuel price to let's say 75 naira let them make use of ten naira added first, may be then we can trust them. Big ignorant tribalistic fool
please read
What is bad if goodluck sick for loan to fix our refineries ,and ino after fixing it we won't have to pay for subsidy he will then use part of the money to pay back the loan and continue effective economic progranms rather than choke the comon man

With the increase in high cost of things especially transportation

If you think you are educated, you are an idiot. If you think you are allowing yourself to be used to support the exploitation of the masses, you are even a biggger idiot.
Now where in your dubious brain did you find that the only way Nigeria will suddenly become a better country is by raising the price of petrol by over 120-200 per cent? If the prices of commodities all rise by 200% without the salaries rising accordingly, how many will survive apart from rogues?
You are a disgrace to Ali Igbo!

WHEN THE DAY OF THE ALMIGHTY SHALL COME.
When the day of the Almighty Creator shall come, presidential guards, brigade of guards, armoured tanks, false prophets, imams, babalawos, billions of dollars in banks, committee of friends, tribes men etc shall not stand. If in doubt, ask Nebuchadnezar, Sadam Hussein, Idi Amin, Jean Bokasa, Samuel Doe, Hosni Mubarack, Col. Ghadafi etc. That men may know that the transient power that man weilds comes from a source and can be withdrawn without notice because absolute and ultimate power, belongs to Him who was, who is and shall be for all times.

@Ifeanyi Democracy, Were Ya Nwayoo!!!!!!
@Hamilton: How can you ever believe that this impostor and paid agent of clueless GEJ could be of the Igbo tribe. And how are you even sure that Deri is Ijaw? How many fools and hungry idiots in these austere times can actually resist the temptation of not taking GEJ's egunje and doing what deri and ifeanyi are doing today?
DIRECT YOUR PROTEST AGAINST BOKO HARAM
Instead of wasting our time going after this govt that is trying to stop stealing in the name of subsidy. we should be protesting against the pigs and infant killers called boko haram and their sponsors who are using money they stole from our oil to buy guns and explosives to kill christians and southerners in the north. Shame on you nigerians for not protesting against boko haram
@Ifeanyi-democracy suffer now,enjoy later nonsense.
@Ifeanyi-democracy.why can't your boss gej cut down his own cost and fight corruption first ,sort out power problem, roads, transportation before removing the fuel subsidy. Instead gej wants us to suffer when he budgeted N1billion naira to feed himself and his vice just for this year alone apart from his salary and allowances, he wants us to suffer while he budgeted N11.2billion for foreign travels for 2012, your brain must be sleeping, nigerians are his employer not the other way round. In Ghana where they removed the fuel subsidy they have power 24/7, roads, hospitals, water, security, free education in public schools up to secondary, ghanians don't use generators at home or work place, so poor ghanians don't care if they remove it or not but in nigeria we run our country on generators, so you can tell idiots like yourself to suffer now while the looters keep enjoying themselves.

FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVAL - THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY
THE GOOD PART - SUBSIDY IS REMOVED FROM THE CARTEL
THE BAD PART - ASTRONOMICAL HIKE OF PUMP PRICE OF PETROL WITH ALL THE PROPAGATED ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL EFFECTS
THE UGLY PART - 'THIEF STEAL AM. THIEF TAKE AM'. WHAT IS SAVED IS NOT GOING TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF NIGERIANS.
ALSO THE WESTERN WORLD IS NOT GOING TO BACK NIGERIANS AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT AS THEY DID IN THE MIDDLE EAST. THEY ARE HERE TO CONTINUE TO SUCK AND ENSLAVE. THEY HAVE DIFFERENT POLICY FOR DIFFERENT REGIONS. THIS IS THE NEW WORLD ORDER. THERE IS REALLY NOTHING YOU AND I CAN DO ABOUT IT. PERSIMISTIC? FATALISM? NOT REALLY. IT IS REALISM. I DON’T LIKE IT. I DON’T WANT IT. SO I ADJUST TO IT.
JONATHAN IS NOT IN CONTROL. HE IS SURROUNDED BY THOSE TOO STRONG FOR HIM. HE IS A PRISONER IN ASO ROCK. WE SHOULD PITY HIM. GOD HELP HIM.
SINS of Nigerian Labour Unions!
NLC/TUC are always fighting the wrong battle. Labour opposed the privatisation and repositioning of Nigerian Airways,in disguise of protecting workers interest, until the company went BANKRUPT. Then the same workers, with nothing to fight for, were laid off and billions of dollars of govt investment went down the drain. The Labour unions also frustrated the privatisation of Nigerian Shipping line and NITEL until they too went BANKRUPT, workers were then laid off and again billions of dollars of govt investment went down the drain. Presently the labour unions are frustrating govt efforts to reform PHCN and delaying the era of uninterrupted power supply in Nigeria. The same labour unions will suprisingly blame govt for the BANKRUPTCY of the above multibillion dollars corporations that ought to be EMPLOYING Nigerians today. Unfortunately i have NEVER heard labour unions protest against govt failure to execute road projects or for the NASS to enact stiffer laws against corruption

GEJ ,DON'T MIND THEM, THEY'LL GET TIRED & DISPERSE
I say to GEJ don't mind the stupid protesters and their dishonest & corrupt sponsors.Be strong & don't ever flinch in your decision to remove the nation-crippling subsidy. Most of them are ignorant cowards. They're trying to mimick honest protesters in the western countries.Given that their protests are dishonest, history shows that they will chicken out.Just give them a week. They will jump up & down a few days & when they are hungry, I bet you they will disperse.I commend and support GEJ for the bold decision. Nothing good comes easy. Many other developed countries passed through periods of difficulty and sacrifice. They are all the better for it now.
@Yom Yom..,i'm not as heartless as you!
I'm not as heartless as persons like you that have been posting stupid comments on this site. The initial suffering of every Nigerian is temporary. I am also feeling the pain. But what has to be done has to be done. What is the gain is postponing the evil day. By nature i love to work before relaxing. There is an Igbo saying that "you work under the sun then eat under a shade". What we should talking about now is how to fast forward the diesel powered mass transits buses and other measures to cushion these initial shocks. What is the gain of shooting down a policy that is just few days old. It is tantamount to aborting an unborn child. Presently there is skyrocketing of fuel prices in neighbouring countries. See whats happening in Cameroun now :http://www.proshareng.com/news/15930
A major Part of the N1.3 trillion is used to subsidize fuel in neighbouring countries. The planned nationwide strike by labour is adding salt to injury. Imagine how deaths will be recorded by doctors strike
Defend yourself against any
Defend yourself against any useless soldier. Call Boko Haram and they will shit in their pants.
Much Ado
We the masses are making too much of noise regarding this oil subsidy removal issue with the ongoing protests alone as the bastards and the beneficiaries behind the decision are seated somewhere enjoying themselves. only Jonathan's name and administration is being shouted forgetting that he became president on the platform of a party. i would rather we tackle the party that placed or imposed him upon us. what is my argument? let us all mobilise against all PDP members in the land, let's renounce PDP as a party, get all the PDP card carrying members to surrender their cards and burn it in the open. Let's all renounce the PDP party nationwide, place curse upon them and tell them they never would they be given any opportunity to be in a position of leadership again even at Wards level. With this, I believe the protest would hit more chords within the party and they wouldn't have choice but to back out and obey the masses's voice.
fuel subsidy
Removal of fuel subsidy is IMF and GEJ agenda to reduce the population of Nigeria. God will avenge for the copmmon man
