Occupy Wall Street Movement In Solidarity March On Nigeria House Wednesday

Protesters at the Nigerian Consulate in New York today
By SaharaReporters, New York

Following Tuesday’s successful picketing of Nigeria House in New York by Nigerians and their friends, Occupy Wall Street will make a solidarity march to the same premises tomorrow, January 11.

In a statement today, Occupy Wall Street explained that the date is the 10 year anniversary of the opening of Guantanamo Bay Prison. “This day is a somber recognition of previous repressive state measures that violate not only people on individual levels, but our international agreements on Universal Human Rights,” it said. “We will be protesting in solidarity with others all over the world.”

It said its action at the Consulate-General of Nigeria will be in recognition of the mass protest that the Nigerian people have been undertaking since the government cut oil subsidies for citizens on New Year’s Day.  It noted that in response, Occupy Nigeria on Tuesday blocked the shipping routes and shut down petrol stations.

“Though it was a peaceful protest, the state attacked the protesters with Tear gas and gunfire, killing 23 year old Mustapha Opobiyi,” the group said.  It noted that Opobiyi’s killing mirrors the systemic state violence witnessed world-wide over the past year since the beginning of the Arab Spring.

Occupy Wall Street said, “As we know in the United States, repression is on the rise.  Between the continued use of inhumane prisons like Guantanamo Bay and the recently passed National Defense Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 2012, people in the US are becoming more and more aware of the injustices of this globalized corporate system.  We stand in solidarity with the Nigerian people and all victims of this system. We also see the inconsistency of the US government's support of pro-democracy movements when it is actively derailing the very democracy it claims to protect.

”

The group’s program for Wednesday is as follows:
3pm-4pm leafleting at 43rd St and 7th Ave
4pm March to the Nigerian Consulate at 44th St and 2nd Ave
5pm Rally at the Nigerian Consulate

Goodluck Jonathan and oil subsidy

I do not see our president as someone that belief in the entity called Nigeria.he lived all his life in the niger delta ,the only assignment that brought him out of the area is the presidency.Nigerians have not come out in unionism like this to protest against any government policy before, fact emerging about budget for presidency is enough to start a revolution. This may be a mistake on my part, does our president belong to the few niger deltans that want the disintegration of Nigeria so that the region can enjoy her natural resources. If GEJ takes joy in violence based on political development in his state where they bomb regularly ,he should please pity Nigeria and listen to the voice of the people and revert to the old price of #65 per litre.

Good proposition, a PS would

Good proposition, a PS would have use not less than 20 yrs in active service of his ministry with adequate knowledge, inputs and good character, why should a senator earns more than that, or worse still, let their salary be equal to what a new professor earn and nothing more, how on on earth can our senators be earning the salary of 5x Obama's salary? that is equal to a life time salary of a Nigerian Graduate federal worker, a senators take home is up to N40 million a month, the annual salary of a graduate federal worker is less than N1Million, that means in 30yrs active service plus all promotion and salary increment, he may not clock 40 million before retirement, that is what a senator earn in 30days, the same senator can pay 2000 workers at N18,000 Naira a month and still have a lot and yet the refuse to implement the salary increase, they should all resign if they can not get the president to rescind his order on subsidy including the president.

51--not 30--years of illegitimacy

You wrote: "Nigeria is not some undemocratic regime with a 30yr tenured presidency devoid of a national assembly, state and local government functionaries." Indeed it's WORSE than that, it is 51 years of dictated constitution, fake elections, one-party rule, failed governance, IMF slavery and zero accountability. If you like am so, please "calm down" by yourself and continue going to church to work off your stress, but the suffering masses have chosen to take their freedom at last!

Your point has been well

Your point has been well articulated. This is the POINT exactly. It's not about fuel subsidy removal....it's about trust. Do the citizens of Nigeria trust the current government? Food for thought

Boko Haram (whoever they are)

Boko Haram (whoever they are) have been killing people on the daily before this subsidy was removed. Our incompetent government was doing little or nothing to ensure the security of her citizens. Now they have decided to take away a major source of survival for everyone! Should the poor and downtrodden especially be made to suffer for the incompetencies and failures of our elites and leaders abeg Occupy Nigeria until we see our leaders working for the interest of the masses! Those who have been killed must not die in vain. Protest peaceful please!

state of d nation

What we are protesting for, its beyong fuel subsidy. We want total change on every aspect, especialy on cost of runing government, is unbelieveble hearing the redeculus amont our leaders earn. We are asking for a total overhauling of the system. Hanks.

let us vote on whether we want to remain as one nation wit BH

Evil minded 0jas whose thought could be bought for a penny a piece! Just like our ancestors sold off our cousins into slavery. Over a bottle of Whisky and a pair of mirrors! They hope to attract western nations such as USA, France and Britain to their demonic ideas. To ask GEJ to step down as they did in Libya. So that the vultures will be in position to re-colonise us in the Niger Delta. Without understanding that the Arab spring was initiated over 10yrs ago by the CIA and Zionist to control the thoughts of the arabs. The same way the horn of africa was sold to the saudis during the cold war-is there peace in Somalia today? Yet the unthinking thinkers who have learnt to speak like the scots and irish as well as native americans want the one year old gwabment of an Ijaw man sacked for Buhari-there were riots in brazil when she removed subsidies-but today their economy is said to be moving faster than the USA-me I just want to be with my people-let us split biko!

While BH kills, we fight for fuel importers to stay alive

Boko haram are killing people

Boko haram are killing people daily should be the major concern for Ebelle Jonathan now before any other thing.

Good job, brothers and sister

Good job, brothers and sister out there in the state, it's time to change our country and enjoy the God given resources that have been loot by some cabal or cartel called PDP

Time to calm down

Yes, fuel price jumped from N65 to N150+ is awful but we all ought to weigh our options carefully considering what has transpired already (passed under the bridge). May those we have lost in the last 12 months rest in perfect peace. Nigeria is not some undemocratic regime with a 30yr tenured presidency devoid of a national assembly, state and local government functionaries. My advise to all of us is to simply embark/push for removal of corruption in all places starting from Government especially on contract awards, national assembly, state governments and an immediate creation of a special court and new-prison to jail most of us who should be given 30years or more vacation in the new kiri kiri. Of course achieving this will require revisiting the constitution and getting it right once and for all.

the strike by labour was becoming suspicious because the same organised labour had refused to go on strike to defend the rights of the people of far North, South-East and South-South who have been buying fuel at prices far above the pump price.

“The people of the North-East and North-West have been buying fuel at N250 per litre, the same for people of the South-South, while the people of the South-East have been buying fuel at N120 per litre. It is not on record that labour went on strike to defend the rights of the people of those areas,” the source said.

OUR CHARTTER AMONG OTHER THINGS

1. THERE MUST BE IN PLACE A LAW THAT MAKES STEALING PUBLIC FUNDS AN OFFENCE PUNISHABLE
2. THE IMMUNITY CLAUSE MUST GO BOTH AT THE FEDERAL AND STATE LEVELS
3. THE PRESIDENT MUST SELL OFF ALL THE AIRCRAFTS IN THE PRESIDENTIAL FLEET. (The Prime Minister of Britain a much bigger economy does not have one and travels with British Airways.) Henceforth, they all should travel via Arik Air or better still Aero-contractors Airlines.
4. THE PRESIDENT'S SALARY AND ALLOWANCES MUST NOT EXCEED $200,000. ( Our President has no reason, what so ever, to earn more than the American President. )
5. THE PRESIDENTIAL VILLA MUST BE SOLD OUT AND BE REPLACED WITH NO MORE THAN A 6-BEDROOM HOUSE. ( The british Prime Minister lives in a 3-bedroom apartment .)
6. FEEDING IN THE PRESIDENTIAL AND VP LODGE SHOULD NOT BE MORE THAN 1MILLION NAIRA PER MONTH. (Presently it is 90million Naira per month for both.)
7. NO LEGISLATOR SHALL EARN MORE THAN A PERMANENT SECRETARY.

Those giving economic

Those giving economic arguments for or against fuel subsidy withdrawal miss the point totally. It is not about economics. It is about TRUST! The spending pattern & priorities of GEJ since 2010 is evidence of who he cares for and what. Under his watch, we increased our debt stock by about $20bn, ran down excess crude from $6bn to zero, FX reserves from $45bn to $ 30bn... ... ... Under GEJ, Dollar exchange rate moved from >N140 to N160 today. Debt stock has doubled to higher than 2005 levels. Interest rates over 20%! And all this is while nearly 10 trillion Naira has been spent on government officials, trips abroad & perquisites/subsidies to politicians! Power supply improvement? Minimal. Jobs created? Zero. Transport Infrastructure? Zero. Agricultural output? Minimal. Private jets? Yes, lots Stationery, refreshment & snacks in the Presidency will consume about N2bn, with N1.6bn spent by GEJ & his VP in 2012. Does that make sense?

OCCUPY 9JA

You may be for or against fuel subsidy removal, but one thing all of us have in common is this our one BELOVED nation called NIGERIA.

One thing we all agree is that our nation is too BLESSED to be this poor.

One thing we all stand against is the endemic CORRUPTION in our government & the pathetic WASTAGE of our resources by our leaders.

One thing we all say is "ENOUGH".

One thing we must all do is ARISE and OCCUPY.

"If these people as ONE PEOPLE, speaking with ONE VOICE have started to do this, then NOTHING they imagine will be IMPOSSIBLE for them."...God Almighty.

1people + 1voice + 1purpose + 1goal = NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE.

Yoruba fulani inspired protest or IMF and CIA? Which way 9ja

9jas in diaspoara are being hired by the oil martketers club, to twist the brains of fellow 9jas abroad with lies on GEJ, Ngozi and our oil minister. Sad though that the guys who attempted to sell their half baked stories about the ongoing CIA and oil thieving elites sponsored Egytian style protest in 9ja, were unaware they were talking to good old lion Deri. I listened to their watery arguements, concerning the house purchased by oil minister in Austria, Dames mansions in the USA, and the threat by Ngozi to resign if the oil subsidy rubbish does not sail through as planned. Lies about oil deals by GEJ among other stories. I felt like throwing out at the end of the whole exercise. 9ja is in real trouble with these type of humans who claim to want to end corruption, yet collect money from the same elites to destroy the image of D nation abroad. Ours could be IMF and WB backed inspired-but one thing is clear-we need to cut our coat according to our size. Fiscal federalism now.
