Odi Invasion: Prosecute Obasanjo And Swiftly Pay Compensation, Ijaws Urge President Jonathan

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo
By SaharaReporters, New York

President Goodluck Jonathan must swiftly rebuild Odi community and ensure the prosecution of former President Olusegun Obasanjo for acts of genocide and gross violation of human rights in the November 1999 military invasion of the community.

In a strongly-worded open letter signed by Comrade Timi Frank, the Ijaws appealed to Mr. Jonathan not to appeal the recent ruling of the Federal High Court which awarded monetary compensation of N37.6 billion to the people, and to set up a Commission of Enquiry which would determine the causes of the incident and ascertain the extent of destruction and the actual number of people killed.

“The government must act and act fast,” the petition said.  “Any attempt to delay the payment of this compensation meant to assuage the colossal loss suffered by the people of Odi in the hands of the military and their retired collaborator would not only portray this government in bad light in the eyes of the international community but a great minus for the government's much vaunted claim of rule of law.”

It reminded Jonathan that the people of Odi are also his kinsmen, and could hold him responsible for any perceived miscarriage of justice in this matter and at this time.

In that regard, they told him that if the judgement is appealed by the Federal Government, they would conclude that he is the one delaying justice to the people of Odi.
“Nobody should attempt to circumvent or scuttle this epoch judgement. The government must be seen to be responsible and ready to make amends when and where its policies go awry and its officials have overstepped their bounds.”

The petition noted that the people of Odi have since suffered in silence in the 14 years since the invasion, a fact that should be enough motivation for the government to rise to the occasion and do the right and sensible thing by immediately complying with the Court's ruling without delay.

@ Deri : There's No statute of Limitations on Murder

@ Deri:
Half education is your major problem. You boasted (in Sonala'article) that you're paid by the Presidency, but, are they paying you to make a global fool of yourself? If neo-NAZI collaborators are still hunted down and tried, the Ota Monster certainly deserves a day at the Hague. The fool saying he's covered by immunity clause should know the World doesn't recognize Naija clauses once Nigeria becomes a signatory to International Law! What goes around, comes around! Today, it's settlement for Odi, tomorrow it will be the turn of Maidugiri where Dumbo's rampaging army will also be investigated for atrocities. Aboki will carve their pound of fresh flesh after 'immunity clause' expires.

@ Odi Enclavers :
The "Settlement" is actually Dumbo's campaign slush fund, forget about it trickling down to you. It's another gimmick to swindle our commonwealth, no shishi will be spent on rebuilding Odi. Hippo-Dumbo is sadistic couple of creek crooks.
Thieves!

Infact, i don't believe you

Infact, i don't believe you are a nigerian, you suppose to know the difference between igbo and ijaw. Mr. Yoruba man stop cursing igbos.

OBJ deserves much more than death

The sins and evil deeds of OBJ are indeed legion. The Devil himself will not be a match for this Ota Chimp. No wonder SR called him a worshipper of Mammon. ....Now I begin to agree with Sowore on OBJ as a not just a worshipper of Mammon but a loose agent of Mammon.

OBJ bombed my Odi from Land Sea & air. Yet not one freedom fighter was casualty. Instead they killed Septugenarians & Octogenarians. Cud they have been the "militants" Nigerian soldiers were looking for?

Certainly, OBJ deserves more than death. His broukous shud be fed to possessed bush dogs while he is alive.

OBJ it was who also sold my Bakassi to cameroon for a plate of porridge & made my oil rich people refugees in primary schools in Calabar. May OBJ not rest in peace while alive & in death.
Long live Bakassi
Long live Odi
Long live Ogoni

obj must be indicted to the ICC on his crime against the Ijaws

I now breath sigh of relief that this case is eventually remembered. There is surely a living ALMIGHTY BEIGN THAT REMINDS us all.

Cursing Oduduwa Land?

I can not imagine an ibo man praying for calamity of unimaginable proportion to rain in Oduduwa Land when a great percentage of ibos are living in the Land of Oduduwa.Mr. Otile if you dont know you should ask your people. There is no Cities, towns and villages in Oduduwa Land you dont have ibos living in.Ibos should be praying for Oduduwa for allowing them to reside in her land peacefully not asking for calamity on her Land.

@DERI THE GOAT

You mentioned that APC is a party based on regionalism. What you fail to realise is that you are one of the worst, most unrepentant regionalist on SR and indeed in Nigeria as a whole. No one gives a shit about the trash you spew here everyday in defence of your clueless paymaster. Jonathan is not dumb because he is ijaw, he's dumb cos he is dumnb. I mean is he the best the ijaw people got? scumbag like you

and you forgot to add that

and you forgot to add that obama can only attack using drones on american citizens who are terrorist outside american territory and must be directly engaged in war with the united states, not on american soil where they must be protected.

OBJ NOT TO BLAME

IF ANY FOR ANYTHING THIS IS ONE REASON I ADMIRE OBJ,DECISIVE ACTION!HE WOULD HAVE SOLVED THIS BOKO HARAM NON SENSE ALONG TIME AGO.

Odi must be compensated

It is primitive and senseless to say that Odi should not get anything because law enforcement agents were killed by some people in the village. It is the duty of government to fish out the culprits and bring them to justice but it is wrong to wipe out the entire village because government is incapable of arresting those who committed the offence. Will it be acceptable if some Nigeians go and commit murder in a foreign country and the government of that country comes and overruns Nigeria killing both young and old people and destroying all their belongings?
For anyone to suggest that government should ignore the judgement is, to say the least, insensitive. We want one Nigeria when it comes to oil income derived from villages such as Odi but when it is time to do justice to Odi, we insinuate that it is because Jonathan is in power. This is an artificial nation period !

@Otile the insane

Then tell your father the mumu canoe coductor and ur Pami drunkers, the SS dafts to compel the Canoe conductor that was not having shoes but now is giving out jet to armed pastors to pay compensation to the thousand of people he killed in Maiduguri. Otherwise, the Odi people should keep there dirty mouth shut, before sending the barefooted president to kiriri in 2015.

@DERI,YOU ARE WRONG-NO TIME LIMIT FOR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY.

@DERI,please realise that we have professionals on this forum, dont misinform the public on such simple issues.
The perpetrators of the Jewish genocide of 1939-1945 are still being hunted down and brought to book, there is no time limit for the prosecution of such crimes as war crimes or crimes against humanity,it all depends on evidence.
The immunity clause is a local Nigerian law,Nigeria is a signatory to the ICC at the Hague therefore that clause becomes null and void and the provisions of international law will take precedence over Nigerian law.
The USA has not officially endorsed the ICC so President Obama may not be held to the same standards as any Nigerian President who chooses to flout international law.It is within the entitlements of the people of Odi to report the case to the ICC,WHAT HAPPENED AT ODI WAS THE COLLECTIVE PUNISHMENT OF A PEOPLE THROUGH A MASSACRE AND TOTAL PHYSICAL DESTRUCTION OF A COMMUNITY.

End of the Road

Now more than ever its apparently crystal clear tha th entity Nigeria ccome 2015 will be none existent! What a shame!I know OBJ would wish he can undo what he contrapted!

NOTHING FOR ODI

IF SOME PEOPLE THINK THEY CAN TAKE LAWS INTO THEIR HANDS BY KILLING LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENTS WHO ARE DEPLOYED TO THEIR COMMUNITY FOR PEACE KEEPING THEN THEY NEED TO HAVE THEIR HEAD EXAMINED. IF THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD MAKE THE MISTAKE OF PAYING THAT COMPENSATION BECAUSE JONATHAN IS IN POWER, THEN THE FAMILIES OF THE POLICEMEN KILLED SHOULD GO TO COURT AND DEMAND FOR 10 BILLIONS EACH. A GOOD TURN DESERVES ANOTHER.
WE CANNOT TOY WITH THE LIFE OF OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENTS.

JUSTICE MUST BE DONE

One Nigeriaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!
The vampires that are always quick to reply to issues that concern their interest in keeping this "one Nigeria" One will refuse to write to to this beautiful report made by SR.
The case of genocide against the Odi people is another case of monumental violation of human right by the erstwhile president Obasanjo and justice should NOT be delayed for one second.
I say it before that the so called rulers in this country call Nigeria will answer their cases if not now by design but latter by divine commission.

You are Idiots

These Ijaws are so stupid and i just avoided a stronger words, Because your idiotic "shon of the shoil" Jonadull is in power, you want compensation for what you did not compell Yaradua to do, You appointed a Judge who obviously have sympathy for you plight to steal 37. 6 Billion from Nigeria in the name of compensation, you guys are dumb, Your GEJ knows that he is marking time and he is making all efforts to pay all the criminals in the creeks. I cannot blame you, we have a weak structure that allows this foolishness to thrive, He has payed all the monies of Nigerians to compensate Criminals who should be in Jail. your shon is a criminal, and when criminals are in power, I ask you, Who will pay the IBOS for the injustice of Biafra? the Ibos are obviously not as duns as you all are, You consider OBJ as an enemy because he did not allow you stupidity in Odi. Trust me, Ijaws and GEJ are idiots. we have a situation at hand.

The Hausa Foolani have been

The Hausa Foolani have been pigheadedly intransigent after the atrocities they committed in Igbo land, hence Karma is finally catching up with them. At least the Yorubas have the opportunity to redeem themselves from impending Karma. The blood of Igbo & Odi people is crying to God for vengeance. If OBJ does not in good conscience appeal to his boy timid Jonathan to pay this compensation, settle the genocide committed in Biafra, or voluntarily hand himself over to the Hague calamity of unimaginable proportion will rain in Oduduwa land. You can't cheat Karma.

JONATHAN MAY NOT HAVE THE BALLS-IJAWS MUST PROCEED TO HAGUE

The evidence of mass destruction and massacre of defenceless civilians in a collective manner is enough to file a case at the ICC Hague. To further support the case is the last verdict in favour of the Odi community, there is a Prima-facie case of crimes against humanity.
Impunity and abuse of political office power must have no place in our democracy and this is the time to set the precedent,President Jonathan must understand that the world is watching him with wide open eyes,Justice must be administered without fear or favour,no man is above the law when it comes to such crimes, immunity is also not applicable in this case.
The Jonathan administration has got a reputation for shielding ex-heads of state from being answerable to perceived crimes ranging from embezzlement and mismanagement of funds like the gulf war oil windfall to the Hallibourton bribery scandal, this has to stop.

TRIAL HIM

He should be trial. The era of civilian and military juntaism is over. Nigeria is in civil democracy, and therefore the time of tyranny is over.

Obasanjo, not to be blamed.

Sahara Reporters, the actions of an executive president during the course of carrying out his duties is protected under immunity clause. This is so even in the USA. Recently it was ascertained that US president can order a drone attack on a rebellious US citizen. Obasanjo's action at ODI is done on behalf on Nigeria.
Kudos to OBJ, long live the Jagunmolu of Egbaland

This is a stupid idea.If you

This is a stupid idea.If you are calling for Obasanjo's prosecution, what should happen to the killers of the security guys that led to the burning of Odi and should Abacha be given postmortem prosecution for destroying Ogoni land and for killing some innocent Ogoni people.ODI PEOPLE DESERVED WHAT THEY GOT.

OBJ cannot be

OBJ cannot be prosecuted--since according to the UN, the offence is time barred-the Yorubas are with jonathan--forget about the antics of tinubu and bakare-they are agents of boko haram-with no clear vision for the SW not to talk of Nigeria--how many ppl from the SS did you see in APC--none--that is why we call it a regional party-a party 4 fulanis, ibos and yorubas--tribalism--go through your fact sheet-and fault me on that-anyway time for us to split--we have fed 9ja for too long--jonah will never appeal against he judgement--that will be the end of his government
