Organized Labour Sets January 9 For Nationwide Mass Action Against Subsidy Removal; ‘Stockpile Food and Water,’ Nigerians Urged
Unless the federal government immediately reverses the price of fuel to N65 a gallon, it faces the prospects of indefinite general strikes, mass rallies and street protests all over the country, and the closure of all offices, oil production centres, air and sea ports, fuel stations, markets and banks.
This warning was issued today in a joint communiqué by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and their pro-people allies, following the Emergency Meeting of their National Executive Councils. It was signed by Abdulwahed I. Omar for the NLC, and Mr. Peter Esele for the TUC.
They called on Nigerians, in preparation, to stockpile basic needs, especially food and water, and to be prepared to participate actively in the nationwide protest.
The statement said: “The emphasis is on peaceful protests, rallies and strikes while refusing to be intimidated. Labour calls on the police, armed forces and other security agencies to reject orders that they turn their weapons on fellow Nigerians. We warn that anybody who does so, will be individually brought to justice. The primary objective of this patriotic call and movement is to revert PMS price to N65, restore normalcy and reclaim Nigeria for Nigerians.”
Labour expressed disappointment that the presidency announced the removal of petroleum subsidy and adjusted upward, the pump price of petrol on 1st January, 2012 even when it claimed it was consulting Nigerians.
They further drew attention to a 2009 understanding between Congress and the Federal government that removal of the subsidy would commence only after certain conditions had been met.
“These include the fixing of all the refineries and building new ones, regular power supply, and provision of other social infrastructure such as railways and repairs of roads as well as eliminating the corruption associated with supply and distribution of petroleum products in the downstream sector of the oil industry.”

In Defence of the Nigerian People on Fuel Price Increases!
Joint Communiqué of the Emergency Meeting of the National Executive Councils of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) Held on Wednesday 4th January, 2012.
The National Executive Councils of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) took place today, Wednesday 4th January, 2012.
The NLC and TUC noted that:
The Presidency announced the removal of petroleum subsidy and adjusted upward, the pump price of petrol on 1st January, 2012 even when it claimed it was consulting Nigerians.
Due to this upward review of prices, the pump price for petrol is now selling for between N141 and N200 per litre nation-wide rather than N65. This prohibitive increase in price of PMS once again confirms the position of Labour that deregulation to this government means incessant price increase of a strategic product (petrol) that impact on cost of living, cost of production and the general well-being of increasingly impoverish Nigerians.
The immediate generalized negative impact of this price increase on transport cost, food, drugs, schools fees, rents, indicate that government is totally wrong to underestimate the impact assessment of the so-called deregulation policy.
Due to the untoward hardship workers and other Nigerians are experiencing based on excessive increase in petrol prices, there have been sporadic protests by Nigerians in at least 10 cities;
These protests, which are peaceful have witnessed the use of unprecedented force by the Police leading to harassment, intimidation, arrests and the murder of a protester.
There is a subsisting understanding between Congress and the Federal government in 2009 that removal of subsidy will not commence until certain conditions have been met. These include the fixing of all the refineries and building new ones, regular power supply, and provision of other social infrastructure such as railways and repairs of roads as well as eliminating the corruption associated with supply and distribution of petroleum products in the downstream sector of the oil industry.
After exhaustive deliberations and consultations with all sections of the populace, the NLC, TUC and their pro-people allies demand that the Presidency immediately reverses fuel prices to N65.
If the Government fails to do so, they direct that indefinite general strikes, mass rallies and street protests be held across the country with effect from Monday 9th January, 2012.
From that Monday, 9th January 2012 date, all offices, oil production centres, air and sea ports, fuel stations, markets, banks, amongst others will be shut down.
We advise Nigerians to stockpile basic needs especially food and water.
We call on all Nigerians to participate actively in this movement to rescue our country. The emphasis is on peaceful protests, rallies and strikes while refusing to be intimidated. Labour calls on the police, armed forces and other security agencies to reject orders that they turn their weapons on fellow Nigerians. We warn that anybody who does so, will be individually brought to justice.
The primary objective of this patriotic call and movement is to revert PMS price to N65, restore normalcy and reclaim Nigeria for Nigerians.
No Retreat!
No Surrender!!
Forward Ever!!!

TO THE ORGANIZED LABOUR UNION
Nevertheless, you will live to regret at long last even if your call to remove the president actualizes. Your children will despise you, because you refused to accept wisdom when you could have made a change not only in your life but in the lives of your future Generation. You are one of those i call "CHOP TODAY AND QUENCH" because there is no tomorrow. Go ahead!!! Bring down the hell and we will live with it.
TO THE ORGANIZED LABOUR UNION
We have nothing to loose if you like to occupy ASO ROCK,please do.
This is what you have been looking for and you will definitely regret calling people to the streets. GEJ has not done anything wrong by removing the subsidy which for years have been impoverishing Nigerians. Recall that 18 licenses were issued to big Companies in 2003, this is the ninth year (9 years). None of these refineries is working. Think, how much has been put in to turn Around (TAM)the existing refineries, but still corruption (Nigerian Cancer) could not allow these refineries to work. It is wise to subsidize Fuel like in Saudi Arabia, Iran and other countries , if these products are produced Locally. But unfortunately, you are Calling Nigerian to occupy Abuja because the President has decided stop feeding foreign countries with billions of our hard earned money that can be channeled to health care Electricity, Roads and to make it possible for Nigerians to be employed and feel belonged.
NLC & TUC
I am wondering how their romance could have gone awry all so soon or is someone playing pranks here.
Aren't these the same labour organizations who were singing Hallelujah only months back when they gullibly jumped to support GEJ and his PDP Cohorts telling Nigerians to vote for the PDP?
What? They didn't know this and more was in the package then?
So is this threat of mass action yet another ploy in their bag of tricks to fool Nigerians again afer bagco bags have been exchanged.
Only for them at 2:00am Monday morning to come up with lame excuses and call off the proposed mass actions?
Subsidy
Sometimes people talk as if they own themselves. What GEJ and his hell cats like Obj and okonjo are totally out of place.Permit me 2 say this, when u get ur self involvd in frats,u cn do as they say.Badluck has comitted hmself and he has 2 do wat dy say. They 4get dat wtout d masses, there is no govt.Let me say here dat d subsidy removal is anoda means of stealin by doz at d top of d ladder.God wil deny them all life if they press further...Its a simple prophecy. Kabastone.

He may have sounded arrogant to his elders, who were more of saboteurs and traitors than genuinely trying to help him to wage the war against the greedy North and hypocrite British Empire that wanted to take control of the oil wealth, which unfortunately they still control today.only to be subordinate and take orders from an illiterate and junior army officer Yakubu Gowon, who could not speak English then, more or less understand the complex world history, economics and international politics? But the shameless British people empowered him and the North to kill the Igbos because they were afraid of OjukwU.thank you all!!!!

Even if he was unborn then or a toddler such as many of us, nevertheless, there are good number of books on Nigeria –Biafra civil war which he can read. Third, do our barrister and solicitor–general not see the injustice in the Federal System? He is a legal luminary and should know better that there is gross injustice in Nigeria against Ndi-igbo, the minorities, poor, and women and so on. Fourth and finally, debased minds like him should be not working in the Supreme Court. Mr. Kunle Adegoke should resign or be fired for his hateful comments and innuendos against Ndi-igbo. CRY 4ME BRITAIN

The recent outrageous statement made by a Solicitor & Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Mr. Kunle Adegoke, is regrettable. Mr. Kunle Adegoke said I quote: “If they (Baifra-Ndi-igbo) attempt the same thing again, we shall wipe them off the surface of the earth. ‘Ebi loko yin’ – meaning “starvation is your albatross.” First, here is a very learned man working in the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Imagine the kinds of decisions this hateful man will be taking against Ndi-igbo. Second, has Mr. Adegoke read Nigeria history – especially the Nigeria – Biafra civil war? ONE NIGERIA. thank you all!!!!

i'm sure you are one who of those disillusioned niger delta youth movement, how do you expect people who fgn claim are living on $2 per day to waste close to half of dat on a litre of gas?
SUBSIDY CAN ONLY WORK IF...
NIGERIANS CAN ONLY AGREE TO SUBSIDY REMOVAL IF...
AIR FARE IS SUBSIDIZED
TAXI FARES ARE SUBSIDIZED
COST OF BUYING CARS ARE SUBSIDIZED (LIBYA STYLE)
COST OF FOOD STUFFS ARE SUBSIDIZED
SCHOOL FEES SUBSIDIZED
BUILDING MATERIALS SUBSIDIZED
EXCELLENT ROADS
EXCELLENT RAIL SYSTEM
& 24/7 ELECTRICITY & WATER PROVIDED FOR ALL
ABI NO BE SO?????!!!!!????!!!
FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVAL WRONGLY TIMED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY REMOVE SUBSIDY ON NEW YEARS DAY WHEN PEOPLE ARE BROKE & JUST RECOVERING FROM CHRISTMAS/HOLIDAY EXPENSES.
NIGERIA IS AN OIL BASED ECONOMY SO THERE WILL BE SEVERE EFFECTS ON OTHER SECTORS OF THE ECONOMY WHICH WILL BE DEVASTING FOR THE POOR MASSES(APPROX 150 MILLION).
IMAGINE HOUSE RENTS, FOOD, AIR FARE, TOLL GATES,TRANSPORT, SCHOOL FEES IN NIGERIA. REMOVAL IS PURE WICKEDNESS & HIGHLY REPUGNANT!!!!!
PALLIATIVE MEASURES SHOULD HAVE BEEN PUT IN PLACE FOR AT LEAST 6 MONTHS IN PREPAREDNESS FOR SUBSIDY REMOVAL.
THIS GOVT'S TIME IS UP!!!
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!
Organised Labour sets Jan 9 for nationwide Mass action...
They have the right to protest. But they must not go violent otherwise people lose their limbs and lives for nothing.
In a country where people live from hand to mouth, for how long can they stay inside their homes in obedience to the NLC call to total strike?
It is only a spineless government that will back- out on a policy that has been hailed by international financial organisations that have been watching our senseless waste of a common patrimony over the years.
My suggestion: (1) Let labour protest ad infinitum. But any leader that advocates violence should be arrested. (2) Let the NNPC mega stations continue to sell at N65. Private importers should sell at commercial price. This is what happened to diesel, to medical, to education from primary to University. Those who cannot buy fuel at commerciall rate should go to the NNPC mega stations. But they should remember to carry their their beds and materesses along. Chikena. Magana ya kare.
The Conclusion is Here!!!
My fellow Nigerian, please let us put ethnics and our diversity aside. This is the golden opportunity. It came with a big cost in Egypt; Libya and Tunisia paid dearly and Syria still paying. Let us all come out and sustain an enduring PEACEFUL protest. Occupy Eagle Square and turn Abuja to " No retreat, No surrender". I repeat that it must be CIVIL and PEACEFUL! For clarification purposes, there wasn't any subsidy in the first place. Let us look at Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Emirate, Qatar, Kuwait and even our brother Algeria. What is Jonothan thinking and where is the testimony that Iweala has been to places? You will all rot in poverty and if you don't bring this country back to Goshen as my Christian brethren says, your life will be like Nebuchadnezzar but God will not restore you.
Nigerians, please let us occupy Abuja..Abuja..Abuja until it becomes Government for the People of Nigeria. bless Nigeria!!!

FELLOW NIGERIANS, THIS IS TRULY A HISTORIC MOMENT. PLEASE LET US ALL UNITE IN OUR DIVERSITY, HEAL OUR WOUNDS, MANAGE OUR DIFFERENCES AND FACE OUR COMMON ENEMY: THE CORRUPT AND HEARTLESS THEIVING POLITICAL ELITE. ONE NIGERIA!!!!
We can't trust Badluck
When minimum wage is 18k and people can hardly eat 3 meal a day, an insensitive govt removed subsidy from fuel. Let them prove it to us if truly subsidy ever existed, if it existed, let them tell us why we should suffer the high pump price of fuel when we all know the money will eventually go to private pocket. Goodluck is a dumb head, instead of concentrating on tackling insecurity in the country, he has turned himself to errand in the hand of imperialist messenger "Okwonjo Iweala". God will punish the FEC and the irresponsible house for inflicting sufferings on Nigerians. God bless you NLC and TUC, you have our support.
mr kingsley
@ kinsley ure a big fool, may God purnish u and ur generation. The strike must hold. Idiot
Omar, please i want
Omar, please i want Jonathan's hat when he's captured !
Iya Dada and Iya Ibrahim have more sense in their heads than you
@Ken Mani
You are so myopic.
What would u tell Iya Dada and Iya Ibrahim would have to pay triple for housing, hospital bill, transport, children education, light , water and food from the slave wage your wife was paying them ?
I believe Iya Dada and Iya Ibrahim have more sense in their heads than you do. They know it is either they die slowly or they fight it out with the looter/rulers. As for you, my you rot in the hottest part of hell !
Keep supportin GEJ God will
Keep supportin GEJ God will purnish u all.
lets wait and see
I don't trust this country at all, don't be surprised it might be the Mafians that have been smugling subsidized Nigerian fuel to Benin republic and Cameroon, benefiting treacherously from the over-blotted subsidy that are sponsoring all these protests, strikes and destructions everywhere..The rot, mismanagement and corruption in the public system should be the primary reason for protests and strikes.
Nigerians are good at talking without action!
Come Monday 9th Jan. 2012, 85% of Nigerians, especially my brothers and sisters from across the Niger River (Ibos) will not be seen taking part in the struggle, even when the are seriously affected. Rather they will go to their shops, and complain against the protesters. "Suffering and Smiling"
Total action is needed. Removal of fuel subsidy is good but the timing is wrong.
THE BEGGAR THAT SUPPORTS JONATHAN.
How can any one in his or her right senses give Jonathan support to increase fuel under the guise of disallowing people with 2 jeeps freedom to drive. Nigerians as we all know, despite their cars & jeeps etc, are basically deprived as they live a life thats not near satisfying as evidenced below
1. Husbands and wives are busy cheating on each other.
2.Families can hardly eat properly.
3. Due to poverty no one tells a "big man" the truth.
4.Our schools have totally collapsed.
5.Our Life span has reduced to less than 50yrs with poverty & AIDS- 2 consequences of corruption
6.Health care has gone bottom up.
Yet these moronic fools continue to revel in meetings laughing and slapping each others back. They can get away with it but soon the net will close on them as they would be like Ibori in their preferred western destinations especially as Global transparency becomes more aggressive.
who will hlp us?
I am not sure Jonathan knows what he is doing cos he can't b telling us subsidy is 2 much and weighing us dwn whn he and his cohorts are spending billions on things that don't even exist. All d same,I don't blame him but those pple who didn't know what they wanted and the northerners who sold themselves 4 money.let's pay d price
