Pardon of Alamieyeseigha: Jonathan Tries To Hide Under Council of State

Nigeria's corruption drag queen, DSP Alams
By SaharaReporters, New York

Facing an unprecedented backlash over yesterday’s state pardon granted by President Goodluck Jonathan to his mentor Dipreye Alamieyeseigha, the president today tried to hide under the umbrella of the Council of States to justify the action.

In a statement made by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe, the president said the pardon granted to various criminals was not his own but that of the Council, which has the constitutional power to do so.

In a stunning move on Tuesday, the Council granted pardon to the serially-corrupt Alamieyeseigha, who escaped the United Kingdom in 2005 dressed as a woman so as to avoid trial; former Chief of General Staff, General Oladipo Diya; former Chief of Staff, Supreme Military Council, Major-General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua; Major Bello Magaji; Mohammed Lima Biu; Shettima Bulama; Major-General Abdulkareem Adisa and Major Segun Fadipe.

Alamieyesegha, like former Delta State governor James Ibori, came to symbolize corruption in Nigeria for his wild money-laundering that was well-documented by the UK Metropolitan Police where fellow corrupt politicians and friends prevent the law from taking its course.  But the former policeman remained close to Jonathan, who, as soon as he became President must have appeared to Alamieyeseigha to be the very road out of his problems.

Nigerians who have spoken to the press generally hold the view that Alamieyeseigha was the very objective of the exercise, as President Jonathan only recently declared the former Bayelsa governor his mentor.  News reports are using such words as “uproar” and “outrage” to describe the response of their readers and commentators.

In public comments earlier today, however, Jonathan said he has no apologies for the pardon.

Speaking through Okupe on a morning television show, Jonathan said, “That is an action that has been taken by the National Council of States and I have no apology for that…A man was deposed. He was hounded, tried and jailed. What is wrong with giving pardon to a remorseful sinner?”

The beleaguered Okupe, talking up the Council of States in his press statement, pointed out that it comprises the President, Vice presidents, all former presidents, former chief justices of the Federation, the leadership of the National Assembly and all state governors, people whom he said do not take decisions on impulse.

On the criticism leveled against President Jonathan by some members of the political class over the President’s recent visit to Yobe and Borno States and the non-granting of amnesty to members of the Boko Haram sect, Dr. Okupe described the allegations as cheap, ill-informed and ill motivated.

“It may be apt at this juncture for the purpose of comparison to recall when in 1980, during the Maitatsine insurgency in Kano, over 6,000 residents of Kano were killed in broad daylight but President Shehu Shagari who was the President of Nigeria at that time did not rush to Kano. President Shagari as a matter of fact did not go there for a very long time until the security situation in Kano had been brought to a situation where a President could visit and there was no hue or cry as at that time.”

He said it was inconceivable that some people have continued to liken Boko Haram to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) to whom government offered an amnesty in 2010.

“Even though the methods adopted by MEND were like-wise condemnable, their demands were mainly socio-economic in nature and spelt out as crusade for better deal for its people whose farmlands and waters have been degraded by pollution emanating from the activities of oil firms operating in the region, Crusade for a greater share of funds accruing to oil producing states from the Federation Accounts. massive development of the Niger Delta region though provision of infrastructure  like pipe     borne water, electricity, hospitals and good roads. He noted that despite the economic nature of those demands, leaders of the MEND were not anonymous, but came out to dialogue with government and that it was on the basis of the dialogue that an amnesty was eventually granted by the Federal Government.”

He said that while the Jonathan holds the Sultan of Sokoto in high esteem and does consult him from time to time on various national issues, the religious leader’s request for amnesty for Boko Haram is understandable in view of his eminent position as the leader of the entire Muslim community in Nigeria and the pre-eminent traditional ruler in the North.

“However, the President has a responsibility to the whole Nation and his judgment must be based on facts and information that are available to him and that will be in the best interest of the Nigerian people,” he said.  “The President cannot afford the luxury of sentimental consideration under the present situation where government has to contend with and find a lasting solution to the menacing issue of Boko Haram insurgency.”

President Jonathan, his claims to integrity and credibility increasingly being shredded every day, wants a second term of office in 2015.

@Deri

I think you miss the point. There are certain crimes that are inimical to Nigeria's development. None more so than rampant corruption and abuse of office. It is more bizarre especially as Jonathan is presently prosecuting ex Bayelsa governor Sylva for corruption. The Efcc officials constantly risk death and assassination in order to convict thieves in public office. The correct approach is to ensure all corupt officials are put in jail or simply do away with the EFCC and ICPC and officially accept corruption as a perk of the office. Jonathan gave a state burial to a rebel leader and an ordinary nondescript burial to a president that died in office. His actions show a very bizarre sense of values!

Pardon of Alam

We will carry placards if Tafa Balogun is not granted a state pardon immediately. Afterall, PDP made him to be stupendously rich by assisting them to use his boys to rig elections. They sent EFCC dogs to him thereafter. Alam and Tafa are ex policemen. They both served their fatherland and their pockets merritoriously well. I just cannot stop laughing aloud. To whom God will destroy, He will first make mad.

did shagari not grant late ojukwu an (amnesty)

@Sunday Njokede, a well know hater of GEJ and the remains of his civil war ijaw brothers who were alleged to have betrayed ojukwu who was granted pardon by shagari! I have often asked you a simple question which u have not been able to answer-aware u know Buhari picked two of his 2 VPS from d SE. Because of the population of the igbos. What happened-he lost! Again Buhari it was who freed mohamed Dantata after d USA had arrested him for drug pushing-buhari freed him-Uba Ahmed was an NPN scribe alleged to have stolen millions-Buhari smuggled him out of kirikiri prison and left your brother alex ekweme there-untill IBB unchained him-the next person to be pardoned will be buhari from benin prison-show us the reocords where thief ribadu who could not even investigate tinubu and orji kalu gave the 31 governors the Alams or ibori treatment-Or just shut up!

DID JONATHA NOT PARDON ?

MR DERI you are a boffun always making useless unsubstantiated comments against the North and South West.Does't it mean these Zones have no eduacated people? Please shut up your smelly ogogoro mouth if you dont have National issues to comment on.

Everything has failed in jona

Everything has failed in jona govt.even phone is always fluctuating so those that voted for JONA we say ALLAH YA ISA.

TO ETHNO-RELIGIOUS ANIMAL CALLED 'DERI' !

Let educate an illiterate called DERI that Yaradua has never requested for pardon because there wasn't anything wrong he committed to anyone. He was neither a thief nor a rascal. Rascal are born in the creeks and they are ethno-religious savages who think that nobody exists in Nigeria beside them. They're morally bankrupt and deviants to the extreme order. See UN Report on the Niger Delta Communities of 2011/12. Jonathan has initiated the pardon to please his people just to mend the image of his brother in genetic criminality. You should understand that you'll never rule anybody in Nigeria. Nigerians will never be given to minority whose culture is thievery and barbarism.

Jonathan! Hand Buhari Aso Rock Key 2015!

Buhari will have to unmake most of the antics, shenanigan and political brinkmanship Jonathan is committing with his eyes wide open. The next president of Nigeria in 2015 will have to undo most things that Jonathan is now doing selfishly for his political self-gain and not for Nigeria. The next president has to reinstate the indictment upon those Jonathan pardoned. And thereafter, Buhari will have to evacuate the pardon Jonathan gave to them. Jonathan himself is corrupt and so, he can’t pardon another criminal. Onetime EFCC ace man Mr Ribadu had indicted Jonathan amid the 24 corrupt past governors. Jonathan has no moral capital to pardon anyone. He should be expecting the EFCC to knock on his door when finally he is out of power and chilling in Bayelsa.

He looks like a he-goat in

He looks like a he-goat in the attire.F

Leave Mr President Alone

It is d responsibility n perogative of d president 2 grant pardons. If he sees Alam as remorseful and worthy 2 b pardoned y not. There r lots of thieves from d northern n western govnors yet none have bin convicted n run roughshot. Even d stolen oil of d ss n se by d northern n western establishmnt which they stil indulge in, how many have bin convictd? I support GEJ n i curse Obasanjo n his former cronic thieving leaders 4 bringing nigeria 2 it knees

Presidential pardon for criminals

It is quite obvious that every state has a constitution that guide and regulate the entire country and her citizenry. When people continuous to rain blames and abuses on the president it borders me a lot. This does not signify 'freedom of speech' granted to all individuals in a country.
Well let us recall that every government setting has three arms: executive, legislative and judiciary. Hence, actions of executive segment and judicial segment even ordinary individuals depends on the law made by the legislative arm. It is this law that empowers the President to perform his duty or functions so far as he is in office. Think before u talk on issues that border on constitution of a country. Reason!

The So-called State Pardon

My heart bleeds for the situation in our dear country. Our leaders are doing what they are doing because of the complacency and docility of the citizens. One cannot, however, blame the leaders because they are products and beneficiaries of high level stealing and corruption.
How can a serious president even contemplating pardon for rogues? In other clime, protests from citizens would have greeted such pronouncement. Ghana is peaceful now because of Rawlings' intervention. This is our prayer.

Are SS governors the only looters

Come on guys Jona was right in pardoning DSP Alm. Everybody that ruled Nigeria is a million times more corrupt than Ibori and Alm; how come it only the SS that goes to jail. This is only part of the greater nigerian game plan to intimidate the SS and prevent them from raising their voice....Think about it. Part of blame rests squarely on SS for diluting their power by divorcing the SE block and alligning with the Yoruba and Hausa block who has tacit destruction agenda for them. My SS brothers should come back home. East-west-north and south there is no place like home. Did you notice how the miracle of unity put Jona on top in the last election. Democracy is a game of numbers and strategy, so in 2015 the APC and PDP should slug it out in the north and west and the SS and SE will play the role of king maker with their vote.....I mean winning extra 11 states will pu any party on top.

RE: GEJ AND BOKO HARAM

I've read over and over agin that GEJ publicly declared that he knows Boko haram, some of which are in his Govt. Yes he did mention of knowing those behind the October 1 bombing and not Boko Haram. And you should understand with him because those who did the bombing were his brothers from the Niger Delta. I stand to be corrected, but at no time did he mention that he knows boko haram members, however, the glaring presence of the sect members/sponsors around the seat of power are obvious!

There was not a single thief

There was not a single thief pardoned by any US President. With the level of corruption in Nigeria, pardoning a convicted thief and looter of the public treasury sends the message that you can get the record erased even in the event that you are convicted. The next one would be James Ibori. It is indefensible. It will be wiser if you keep quiet.

@"DERI": Jonathan does NOT compare to a US Preident

Your comparison of the action taken by Mr. Jonathan and those of US presidents are not comparable. No US president will ever pardon the likes of Governor and convicted criminal Alams. In fact you did not even bother to give a specific example because you KNOW that to be true. Look there is no defense for this pardon. You can try.

2015

Only fools will vote GEJ come 2015

SR Please keep this pic and

SR Please keep this pic and that of Ibori holding to his chest prison number as your front page.

'I THINK SAY DEM SAY THEY DON

'I THINK SAY DEM SAY THEY DON PARDON YOU, MAKE YOU VISIT LONDON NOW, FOR THIS ONE I FIT BUY YOU FIRST CLASS TICKET TO VISIT LONDON' IF YOU NOR KNOW JUMPING BAIL NA VERY SERIOUS CRIMINAL OFFENCE FOR UK AND CRIMINAL MATTERS NA FOREVER IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AS LAWYERS DEM DEY SAY, CRIMAL MATTERS ARE NOT STATUTE BARRED
'PARDON FOR CONVICTED THIEF? NA WA OH, SO MAKE ALL NIGERIANS BEGIN TO THIEF NOW, AS IBI SAY TO THIEF DEY PAY BIG DIVIDENTS FOR NIGERIA. WETIN YOU DEY TELL US BE SAY THE COURTS NOR TELL THE TRUTH OR NA MISCARRAGE OF JUSTICE. THIS NOT FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION, THIS NA TIGHT FOR AND IN FAVOUR OF CORRUPTION.. PEOPLE WEY GIVE YOU THIS ADVICE NA VERY WICKED PEOPLE, AS THEY JUST WANT TO SPOIL YOUR NAME. I DON TALK FINISH'

NO ALAMIE NO EBELE.

Nigerians, get a glass of water and stay cool. Looking for a yes boy vice governor, Alamie went to Uniport and yanked Ebele from his teaching job. Until that time, Ebele was never in politics and he knew nothing about politics. Without Alamie, there is no way Ebele would have become a governor and now president. How do Nigerians not expecting Ebele to pardon Alamie? I saw it coming. And when Alamie was busy stealing Bayelsa's resources, you all think Ebele was standing there innocently saying Oga, the Bible says thou shall not steal? Nigerians, you haven't seen anything yet. "You suffer, you go tire, you go quench."

Council of Rogues

Jonathan and his so called council of rogues, ( council of states)are buffoons, God Save Nigeria

Jonathan doesn't give a damn

Those complaining should get it into their heads that President Goodluck Jonathan does not give a damn. Period!

Disgraceful Disgraceful!! Disgraceful!!!

I am most ashamed for Okupe (or is it Dr. Okupe?. Even prostitutes do have some shame but it appears this one is a super pro

@Deri and SS governors

I am not sure what your precise issue is. If your concern is that too many governors from the SS are prosecuted for corruption then you may want to gently tell President Jonathan to discontinue the prosecution of ex governor Sylva of Bayelsa state. That, after all, is within his control to do. However, once convicted, it shows poor form and renders the efforts of the EFCC a worthless and depressing task. The implications to political office holders shows that there is no deterrence to the outright theft of the resources of the commonwealth. It also moves closer the real danger that this government will soon be overthrown!

who made the Sultan of Sokoto the leader of the entire Muslim...

community in Nigeria. The caliphate never controlled Borno empire of the south west of Nigeria. Those areas equally have large muslim populations!

The Sultan may be the leader of muslims in the South West but he does not and has never led muslims in the South west or North east. Somebody should tell Okupe, saharareporters and Jonathan to get this correct!

good job president jonathan

all hausa/foolani can go to hell and burn to ashes.

SR should stop mixing the issues!

On the issue of Amnesty for Boko Haram, I support the President. Or is SR advocating that all their ateocities should be wished away? They do not deserve amnesty. The comparison given by Doyin (or Mr President is correct). Boko Haram and MEND are two completely different issues. WHAT IS THE MOTIVE FOR THE BOKO HARAMS KILLINGS? At least, we all know what MEND was agitating for. What about Boko Haram?

On Alam's Presidential pardon, it is a wrong move and outright NEPOTISM! Placing the blame on the Council of State is unacceptable. He could have declined it, for being too close to home! To say he does not owe any apologies is a callous thing to say!

GEJ plans to contest for the

GEJ plans to contest for the chairmanship of his Local Goverment elections in 2015

THE PRICE OF A WEAK LEADER

The ruling of this nation had being hijacked from GEJ,

Open your Eyes Nigeria, 2015 should be the reckoning day.

DID JONATHAN NOT PARDON DIYA & YARA-ADUA

U.S. presidents have wielded the power to issue pardons since it was granted to them in 1789 by Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution. The number of pardons issued by a president has varied considerably. President George Washington issued 16 pardons between 1789 and 1797. Franklin D. Roosevelt granted the most— a jaw dropping 3,687 pardons. Roosevelt, however, is the only president to serve three terms—12 years—in office. Two presidents did not grant any pardons during their administrations, William H. Harrison and James Garfield. Both men died soon after they became president, one month in the case of Harrison, who died of pneumonia, and six months in the case of Garfield, who was assassinated. Sadly its only in Nigeria that we turn such acts into regional wars-Our jail houses are meant for governors from the SS-but not the oil blocks-how many governors in Nigeria were given the Alams treatment-name just one of them!

The more Nigerians stay docile, the more impunity to expect.

The other day, I was reading why prayers remain unanswered. It is not as if Nigeria has not got multifarious problems. In fact if you are to tabulate them, they will result in a 300 PAGE DOCUMENT. Multitudes of Nigerians pray fervently!

Prayers remain unanswered because the people have not changed their ways.

Do not expect any solution for Nigeria whether by Physical or Spiritual means, when we remain stuck in our evil ways. GEJ and PDP are not the real problem. They are the outcome of the problem, which is that we, the people have become satisfied, in fact happy with the status quo in Nigeria today. The more we stay docile the more impunity we should expect from our leaders. This is just a test of how much MESS GEJ can dole out to the messes, I mean MASSES!
