"Pastors With Private Jets An Embarrassment To Christianity", Says Bishop Kukah-The Nation

Bishop Hassan Kukah
By Sunday Oguntola

The acquisition of private jets by Christian leaders diminishes the moral voice of the church in the fight against corruption, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev Matthew Kukah, declared yesterday.

He spoke against the backdrop of the presentation of a private jet to the National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, by members of his church during the celebration of his 40th anniversary in the ministry penultimate Saturday.

Kukah, who was guest speaker at the annual Founder’s Day Anniversary lecture of Providence Baptist Church in Lagos, described exhibition of such opulence by church leaders as embarrassing.

The fiery cleric who spoke on ‘Church and the state in the pursuit of the common good’, said: “The stories of corrupt men and women being given recognition by their churches or mosques as gallant sons and daughters and the embarrassing stories of pastors displaying conspicuous wealth as we hear from the purchases of private jets and so on clearly diminish our moral voice.”

Kukah, who was represented by the Administrator of Holy Cross Cathedral Lagos, Rev. Monsignor Pascal Nwaezeapu, also expressed displeasure with the perceived closeness of the CAN leadership to the corridors of powers.

He said such alliance will weaken the ability of the church to speak the truth to elected public office holders.

According to him: “CAN has become more visible in relation to national prayer sessions, pilgrimages, alliances with state power and so on.

“Unless we distance ourselves, we cannot speak the truth to power. We cannot hear the wails of the poor and the weak. We should not be seen as playing the praying wing of the party in power.”

He challenged the church to speak against corruption in low and high places, saying such responsibility must never be jettisoned for any reason.

Apart from Orisejafor, other church leaders who own private jets include Founder of Living Faith Ministries, Bishop David Oyedepo; General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye; Founder of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo and Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy Church.

Pastors' Jet

Is it that we are all big jokes in this Country or what? anytime issues that should make all of us recall and retreat,we handle it with much levity. Nigerians it is time we tell ourselves nothing but the truth and leaveit out.The Bible says the truth will set us free.Let us get real and stop playing to the gallery.

And where was it mentioned

And where was it mentioned that they should own private jets. If you're a real Ph.D holder i expect more from you not this kind of talk unless it was all this honourary degrees. but there however is a place in the bible where Jesus told a rich man to give up all his possessions and follow him so as to acheive eternal life

Oppose

Although it wasn't in the Quran or Bible, yet he has to look to the poors condition, how their feel will be in hearing this fancy bubble.

This Bishop should erase

The reality is that some christians are poor.Jesus' parents were very poor.
St. Paul said he has learnt to be poor and rich too.
Do not give the impression that these "churches" whose pastors have Jets are richer than the Church of Bishop Kuka.

This is Idle Talk!

Idle stupid talk! Where in the Bible or Qoran was it mentioned that men of God should not own private jets? If jets will facilitate their movement and the gospel, why not? Are they the ones dipping their hands in the national coffers to put Nigeria in the curerent horrifc economic situation? Condemning them is like saying because fraudsters use the internet, pastors shouldn't. These critics should just shut up and face the real people who are destroying the economy.

PRIVATE JETS

VANITY.VANITY UPON VANITIES.

ACH. BISHOP NA MILIKI, POPE NA ENJOYMENT, IMAM NA GB.....

Whichever way we see it, pastors are products of our system.May God have mercy.

Kukah's condemnation of pastor with private jet

I want 2 used this medium, 2 inform Elder Edit dat, there nothing like chrisalam in Islam. And Pastor Bakare is a christian, and even a pastor.

Oritsejafor's private jet

The first Century Christians started the congregation as a family! There was no disparity neither was there class differences among the Apostles and members. What each member has was pooled together for the use of all. No wonder then Ananias and Sapphira his wife was punished with death for lying about their contribution since they had imagined that they could lord it over others if they could set aside part of their wealth. Today, the clergy who blinded their eyes and pretended not seeing the suffering and pitiable state of their church members will suffer the same fate as Ananias and Sapphira! Mark my word!!

This Bishop should erase

This Bishop should erase poverty mentality from Christianity. I am sure if he has access to one private jet today, he will be happy for it.

he said it all

He has said it all. but no one is stoping any man of God from having as many jets as they require not desire. Jesus once told a man to sell what he has and give to the poor and not to him. so how much life of the poor have these donors toched?

He has said it all. but no

Kukah Condemnation of Pastors with private jets

Its not new at all! I don't the age of Kukah & the other critic Bakare but I know that the first aeroplane I saw in my life as a primary school pupil in the early 50s was owned by white missionaries of SIM & Lutheran Missions. This was in jHos. They even had air-strips in Benue & Taraba. Kukah do your research you will find out that Pastors had own aeroplane before you were born. I respect Kukah a lot he is doing well as a missionary but for the other one Bakarram (bakare). I don't whether he is christian or moslem, some opeople say he is chrisalem!

MEN OF GOD AND PRIVATE JETS

Owning a jet in itself is good but not at time when most of our people who worship in Churches are wallowing in abject poverty. Go to a typical church and you see faces of people who are victims of the imbalance of capitalism lookin up to the prayers and help of the church only for them to also see that this capitalism exist in the church through classy lifestyles of men of God. Our help is in the name of God

devil nkee

Nwanna leave the devil out of this......for those that engaged in the jet sager know that more than we do

Religion is the opium of the

Religion is the opium of the masses, it takes the grace of God to see beyond the nose when brainwashed by those who offer the gospel of the pocket. You have said it all, a word is enough for the wise.

you are stupid the pope do

you are stupid the pope do not have a private jet he alwways travel in charterd Alitalia plane

your sense of understanding

your sense of understanding is too shallow in christianndom God gave wealth for the generality of the people that was why the apostles and the 1st century christians gave up all there belongings and was shared among them according to there needs with all the poverty in the land tell me what does a pastor need private jet for when many of their flocks goes hungry the devil has entered the church and is appearing like angel of light may God saave us from all these devilish pastors

Please note that neither

Please note that neither Bishop Mike Okonkwo nor TREM own a private jet. Kindly correct.

@akpos1 - I support you full time. The truth is bitter

Now everybody criticizing akpos1 for speaking the truth. I also observe that most of u who dnt like what he/she says are Yoruba tribes men. But u see, akpos1 is right. Lets remove sentiments and treat the issues.
Take for example, take a look at the list below
1. Gabriel Oduyemi(First to steal church money & buy Jet
2. Dadid Oyedepo (The Witch Slapper of Winners)
3. Papa Adeboye E. (The Helicopter pastor)

Now, all of u show me one single instance in any news media where Bakare or Kukar criticized these Yoruba pastors. Or is it that they have been deaf, blind & Dumb? How come it is now that "BELOVED Pastor ORITSEJAFOR" is given a jet as GIFT, that they start 2 complain? He did not buy, it was just a simple gift. But all these Yoruba pastors bought even more than 1 jet with stolen church money & Bakare with Kukah chose to be blind. NONSENSE.They shud leave our pastor alone. Criticize your own country men.
Long live d Niger delta, long live d United States of the SS & SE.

Too bad we are insensitive

Too bad we are insensitive about it! One major tool of the devil in this end time is not to persecute the church with unbelivers but to steir up arguments within the body of christ, thereby using christains against christains. Less be careful the way we criticise constructively thats if it is constructive. Pastors should have the best things in life, infact much more than a private jet . Take for example, if an occultic man can be negatively blessed and enriched by the devil with the best of houses, cars, jets, businesses and empires for serving him( devil) faithfully, how much more my heavenly father who owns the whole earth and the fulness there-off. GOD is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above (ALL) the things you can ever ask for even much more than a private jet. Congratulations papa AYO ORITSEJAFOR. Hope to park my own jet beside yours soon.

FATHER KUKAH

if the Pope will have all this why wouldnt other men of God have.

Nigerians are mumu esq!

Let the mumus continue to donate their hard earned money to these businessmen. My only issue is why the Government is not taxing them for their business? because it is clearly not a non-profitable organisation. Criticize Kukah all you like, he said the truth.

MADNESS OF THE MOUTH

People should not loose their decency by calling men of God names, if truly they are men of God. With the high rate of poverty in the country and bearing in mind that The CAN leader is representing the whole Christians of Nigeria one will have love to see the so call gift of Jet being given to the CAN leader and not Ortijeofor as a person. What is the hurry? the jet could have been given to him after his term in office as CAN leader.or is it that he used his position as CAN leader to solicit for the Jet? What assurance is there that the so called nameless individuals that purchase the Jet are not doing so with our Oil Subsidy money? Abi the Jet is for Special prayers for GEJ not to prosecute Them (Oil Subsidy Fraudsters). May the All Almighty God expose all the fake Mallams and Pastors that think they can use the name of God to enrich themselves.

must the church own jet? cant

must the church own jet? cant money for jet be use to award scholarships, build enterpreneurs etc.wot will a church be doing with jet when there are commercial airlines?remember during the days of Jesus he neva collected the best things rather he was more interested in mankind.parking and maintainance cost of a jet wouldnt it pull up to one million out of poverty?
