Persecuted For Honesty: Miami Auditor , Nigerian Victor Igwe Dismissed -Miami Herald

Victor Igwe
By CHARLES RABIN

Victor Igwe, Miami’s auditor general for more than the past decade, was told to leave the Miami Riverside Center Monday by the director of Employee Relations, because his contract had run out.

City of Miami Auditor Victor Igwe was let go Monday after 12 years, with little explanation other than his contract had run out.

Igwe, 59, a lightning rod of administrators over the years for uncovering the misdeeds of city workers, said four city higher-ups including Employee Relations Director Beverly Pruitt and Deputy City Manager Luis Cabrera visited his office late Monday afternoon with a termination letter. They told him he had to leave.

The letter, signed by Pruitt, said Igwe was being let go because the City Commission had taken no action since his contract ran out April 28.

It was shortly past that time when Igwe approached commissioners asking for a new contract, but was told instead Commissioner Frank Carollo would evaluate his compensation and report back to the city within 60 days. The two-month period ended Monday.

Pruitt “said she doesn’t have authority to keep paying me because the commission failed to take any action,” Igwe said.

Igwe’s final contract which he signed in 2007 – like the city clerk and the city attorney he signs four-year contracts – paid him a salary of $172,000 a year. It calls for a severance payout of six months if he’s fired, but it’s anything but automatic: The contract reads the payout can be considered, and it needs the approval of the City Commission. Igwe said he will likely seek legal counsel to determine if he’s due the payment.

Igwe has long been considered a thorn in the side of authority in Miami. He often wrote scathing audits, one over a decade ago that found the director of the Bayfront Park Trust was misusing city funds. He was jailed. Another audit found what Igwe believed to be improper payments from a city Community Redevelopment Agency, which eventually led to investigations involving former City Commissioner Arthur Teele Jr., who eventually killed himself in the lobby of The Miami Herald building.

Anyone that thinks that this

Anyone that thinks that this is not news worthy needs to get his or her head examined. It is very rare this days to hear of such Nigerians living above board in their chosen professions. Mr.Igwe more ways will open for you. keep up the good work

@Zainab and her ilks should go and hang, afterall such news is a bad news to them considering the culture of impunity and brazen looting their kith and kins has thrown Nigeria into in the last forty years.Certainly such news about a Honest Auditor will be a bad news to them

I believe that the main

I believe that the main purpose of the information provided in this forum is to demonstrate that there are Nigerians in position of authority that are honest, ethical, intelligent, and are willing to do the right thing. Based on the news account of his tenure at Miami, as evidenced in this news account, other positive articles about him on the web (please goggle his name), and the overwhelming positive comments from his community (Miami) in response to his termination, all Nigerians should be very proud of him for being an exception to the norm. In fact, more often Nigerians make news for the wrong reasons and not for the type of things that this man has achieved. Therefore, any derogatory comments about this man are totally misguided.

Douchbag

This is no time to be writing about this clown! I live in Miami and I am also a very successful professional. This guy has never identified himself as a Nigerian. As a matter of fact, he will always say to people that "He used to be a Nigeria" and that the only connection he has to Nigeria is that he was born there. This is no time for us proud Nigerian to be feeling sorry for somebody who has never identified with us. He is known to be a pompous jackass anyway!

Mr. Victor Igwe, your Integrity will speak for you!

Mr Victor Igwe, you have shown you don't belong to the maddening crowd of gullible Nigerians by not using the position you held in Miami to tarnish yourself, your family & Africans in diaspora. Although you happen to originate from a country (nigeria) that glorifies graft, fraud, excessive greed, misuse of authority and praise for looters. It is a fact that most Nigerians irrespective of language, tribe, religion or position generally lack intergrity, honesty and professionalism exemplaries wherever they are on planet Earth because of just one thing; Greed, so they end up getting disgraced out of office or end up in jail. Know this; You were not disgrace out of office. So keep your head up, you can stand tall and talk in Miami or anywhere God opens a position for you. Unfortunately, because Nigeria is a failed state already, so you do not matter to the buffons who rule that Nation whether you do good or bad, dead or alive)However you have made name for yourself in your profession as capable and have a name to protect, and with that, people will reckon with you. More blessings as you take any meaningful step towards restoration.

@Ibrahim Kai & Haruna Dogo I

@Ibrahim Kai & Haruna Dogo

I can see how stupid you are with your chicken brain. There is nothing in this article that depicts fraud or 419 on the part of Mr.Igwe. This shows how you reason with your chicken brian. If you do not understand the import of the article you better shut up your filthy mouth. Smelly idiots

One door closes, another one

One door closes, another one opens. There is a spotlight on Mr. Igwe because he probably did an outstanding job while working for the Miami city council, so i am proud of you. Anyway, one cannot totally blame Mr. Igwe for seeking legal counsel because, the most logical decision he should take would be to go home and offer his services to the corruption stricken Nigerian government, but we know what is going on. No power, no roads, no security, no rule of law and so on and so fort. So, let the government put its'act together and I am sure so many will be willing to serve

So, why dont he seek job under Jonathan?

SO, If he thinks and knows that he is a genius, he should go back to Nigeria and seek job under Jonathan goodluck to help him Jonathan clean up the mess all those looters have caused nigerian since independence.

He should be ashamed to even consider a legal action when his junior brothers and sisters are in Nigeria looting and plundering Nigeria of revenue that can turn Nigeria into relative paradise.
let him show his briliance by asking Jonathan for a position as accountant General of Nigeria, if he will not join his other group back home.

that is the world we live

African Immigrant should know they can not survive in the midst of Josee and Mamita. Miami is a Latino annex and does not seem as a part of America. I had a high score in their city exam way back in 99 but they still edge me out somehow. Go to their airport and other places they prefer the Latino who does not have working permit to an African with one. Another Irony of life, News about Nigeria would make any country to think twice about a Nigerian auditor. They simply can say he should go home and audit his people "ass" first before trying to be a mega star abroad. The truth remains Nigerian syndrome is plaguing the gentleman!

BAD NAMES BY SOUTHERNERS

You Southerners are the ones giving Nigerians a bad name with you 419activities especially the ibos while we the northers are giving nigerians bad name with BOKO HARAM n slaughterer human beings like Northern NAMAS.Happy we will soon see who is giving who the bad name as the the divisions whill revert soon and oil will no longer be a common national commodity but state resoruce and we will see how One Nigeria will operate. THINK ABOUT YOUR ANTICS YOUR MEN ATIKU n BUHARI will soon account for all the human lives lost because of them and BOKO HARAM

Where is the persecution

Most Nigerians now think like thieves. Just because someones contract expired you now claim that he is a SUPERSTAR! Kai, you guys are sick!!!

Whats the big deal, 419 people!

Abeg go and sit down all of you! Whats the big deal. His contract is not renewed, so what? Most of you are too fraudulent that common normal act is now seen as heroic!!! You southerners are the ones giving Nigerians a bad name with your 419 activities especially the Ibos!

This happens everyday to

This happens everyday to people.His contract expired,so what is the big deal?players get offloaded in their clubs,so do we take the good goals they have scored for their team in the past to react for asking them to go?Life continues.He should be ready to relocate because some other good city or counties will need him.That is life

My brother your country needs

My brother your country needs you! come over to Macedonia and help us! a honest Nigerian?how great is that!

What is persecutory about this?

I don't get this. What is persecutory about this? Mr. Igwe you've done a good job, move on. Local Municipalities every where are cutting staff and cutting costs.

In the U.S today, the new buzz word is "Spending Cuts". America sef is going broke by August 2, if McConnell, Cantor and Boehner decide to show Obama. You neva hear about Greece?
America is broke. Go and start a business. Best wishes.

If he comes to work for GEJ,

If he comes to work for GEJ, they will kill him. At least in the US they only fired him. What would have happened to him in Nigeria could better be imagined. Long live Mr Igwe for standing for the truth.

Good luck Igwe

Igwe, thanks pretty much for your honesty. And to all, auditor are not meant to be friendly. Their job is to audit account. If Igwe had been working directly for the City, it would be good. In most cities in the US, auditor are paid the same or more than the mayor of the city, and moreover, they are independent. Which means, they survive the mayor. The only way to get rid of them is via city councils. It appears Maimi get external auditor they can terminate after contracts.

Igwe should seek legal counsel. Like someone said, Igwe, it appears you will get a job with Rochas in Imo. But note that you will also make enemies. Auditors are enemies of fraudulent people.

I am very proud of you. Please keep up your good work.

Take care.

Gboluwaga

Not all Nigerian are Fraudsters

All least we still have decent honest Nigerians trying to make this world a better place.

@ Zainab If this is the way

@ Zainab

If this is the way you people are in that Save Nigerian Group, I´m afraid you potray your group as self seeking one! Mind you I´m not Igbo but this piece just made my day and I´m really happy I read about Mr Igwe.

You are the one that should find else where to look for members you want to brainwash!

I wish Okorocha can loan him

I wish Okorocha can loan him to come and audit the IMo State account from 1999-2007.

Bravo Bro Igwe. Hold your head high.

@ ZAinab and Ishaku, you'll not see what is newsworthy in this story because you have been blinded by the business as usual attitude of your brothers that stole the country blind for 40 years.

@Zainab, you get a life

Igwe my brother I'm proud of you. I was starting to get too angry with negative reports both in media and personal tales, so you've done us proud.
And the comments from Nigerians on here indifferent to his plight just show Nigerians deserve the boko haram treatment.
It happens so often that Africans get stitched up when they refuse to be a slavish stereotype.
Well done, Mr Igwe. SR isn't being mischievous they're showing what we go through everyday at the hands of oyibos, who are the original 419ers.

Well done Mr. Igwe

I am so surprised by some of the comments i have read saying that there is nothing special about this news. Had his contract not been renewed because he was a fraud, the usual tribalistic commentators would quickly recognise that he is an igbo man.

I pray that all of us in our various work places would be like Mr. Igwe: honest and uncompromising, standing for what is right even at the cost of loosing our jobs.

Mr. Igwe's time of upliftment is nearby in Jesus name.

@Joe Z, thanks for your

@Joe Z, thanks for your beyond-the-surface review of the reportage!

One more case to prove that

One more case to prove that 419 and fraud are not hereditary genotype of a certain tribe as some commentators often want us to believe in this site. Bravo Mr. Igwe for disproving that lazy theory on 419 gene - again

RE: IGWE

SR, this is silly repoting. Just like Zainab said, there is nothing special about this.
