Plane Crash Averted At Asaba’s Uncompleted “International Airport”

Gov. Uduaghan and his deputuy pose with Overland airline crew
By Citizen reporter

What might have been a disastrous plane crash at the yet to be completed N40billion Asaba International airport was averted at the weekend when an Overland Airlines plane was forced to go and land at the Benin Airport following communication equipment failure at the troubled airport.

The pilot of the fully loaded commercial aircraft, registration number 5N-BND, which had come in from Lagos, was said to have lost contact with the Asaba airport tower as a result of which he could not be guided for landing.

According to two of the passengers who gave their names simply as James and Sonia, the aircraft hovered around the airport for about three hours, without successfully contacting the control tower.  His efforts to land being unsuccessful, the pilot took the plane to the Benin Airport where he landed.

It was gathered that after the landing, the plane remained at the Benin Airport for another two hours before it took off again, but the passengers, in fear of their lives, refused to board it.
Attempts to get comments from the frightened pilot, who stayed on the runaway beside the plane at the Benin Airport proved abortive as airport security men would not allow this reporter to speak to him.

Some of the distressed passengers are calling on the Nigeria's aviation authorities to look into the situation at the the Asaba Airport in order to avert the death of passengers attempting to use the airport.

They expressed conviction that the Asaba Airport is not near completion and that the Delta state government hurriedly opened only for political reasons that may lead to serious loss of life in the future.

As of the time of this report, work continues at the controversial airport, and Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has yet to disclose the amount of money that has been expended on the project despite the agitation of many Deltans.

Instead, in March, the governor, in loud fashion brought in an Overland aircraft for a flight test at the yet to be completed airport, a comical but dangerous occasion in which cell phones were used to control the pilots efforts to land the plane.  Investigations have revealed that top government officials as such as the state Assembly Speaker, Deputy Governor and even the governor himself don’t patronize the Asaba Airport but prefer to travel down to the Benin Airport to travel by air.

In July this year, Governor Uduaghan, desperate to prove people wrong about the airport, drafted the Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Oduah, to his office in Asaba, an occasion in which huge amounts of money allegedly exchanged hands. Shortly after that clandestine meeting with the Minister, Mrs. Oduah expressed satisfaction with the high standard of facilities in the Asaba Airport, declaring that they could be compared to some of the "best" in the world.

The Minister said the airport met global specifications and standard, noting, “I am very very excited over this airport. It is very very wonderful and has met global standard”.

It would be recalled that contractors who executed projects at the Airport staged a mass protest, which disrupted operations there, over debts owed them by the sole contractor ULO Construction Company.  The chairman of ULO, Mr. Uche Okpunor, when addressing the aggrieved protesters, accused Governor Uduaghan of not fulfilling his contract financial obligations.

What ignorance!

Airplane crash "averted" due to failed communication equipment at the new Asaba airport??? So, anytime communication fails either at an airport tower or on the airplane, that should lead to a crash??? What an ignorant news report, equally meant for a gullible audience? At times I wonder who is raping the poor people of the Nigeria the most, the politicians or the media! It's so sad and unbelievable that anyone will publish this rubbish as a news item.

I can't believe what am

I can't believe what am reading on this site. This is by far the worst piece of journalism I have read this year. The saddest part is the comments made by my fellow country men on the issue. GOD HELP US AND OUR LEVEL OF EDUCATION AND SELF REASONING IN THIS COUNTRY. Think for yourselves people.

gov. uduaghan is a vissionless dubious man.

emma dont kill people in the compound you build in the name of airport, as far as i am concern there is no airprt in asaba.u are doing all this things because you are being supported by all those tugs who call themself politician, nemesis will catch up with u one day. may satan bles u.

you are a fool!!!!!

its unfortunate when fools like you wake up and feel they can comment rubbish in public...how do you compare asaba and Lagos airport?if we have a little of what lagos airport has we wont be complaining...How many times has your shameless gov used his death trap?please if you dont have anything to say just keep your mouth open!!!

Can a mere loss of radio

Can a mere loss of radio contact with a controlling tower result in a plane crash in an airport that is not busy?
What will the pilot gain by hovering for "three hours" in an airfield?.
Sometimes you guys need to carry out a research on some of the issues that are published on your sight.
I wish you a good investigating journalism.

Asaba Airport

While I commend SR for insight information on Nigeria that the normal Nigeria media will not publish, it is appalling to write stories that cannot be verified. While it is a known fact that the airport is not complete, there is a regulatory aviation body in Nigeria, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority(NCAA)which controls Airports and Private Airstrips in Nigeria. The Asaba airport can not be fuctional if it has not been certified by NCAA for normal flight opeartions.I would have expected SR to contact NCAA before going online. Moreover, no Pilot in Nigeria will circle within an Airport for three hours in a good weather when there are alternative Airports in Benin, Owerri e.t.c or fly back to Lagos in worst case.

this is people are killing us softly

The Delta government are all thief. They are carrying our money for the best interest and May the almighty fire them all.
Dante

But Why?

This report is really unfair cos media ought to be people's screen to reference all the time rather than giving reports that does not hv an in-depth of facts and figures. That the Gov. of Delta State is nt flying through Asaba airport is a trash cos I boarded the same flight(Airik first flight from Lagos to Asaba)with the Gov. and his entourage which RMD was among on board on Monday 17th of this Month, and that the aircraft was on air for three hours in Asaba airport, pls ask this reporter if he has ever flew in his life.

Uduaghan flies through Asaba

SR has proved itself to be unreliable; it is common knowledge that Asaba airport is yet to be completed but to say that Delta state govt officials do not use the airport is a white lie. I flew to lagos in the same aircraft with Uduaghan sometime in August this year. SR please cross check your lies before you publish them.

If there is a moron, it must

If there is a moron, it must be you. Why? You should have excercised doubts about the authenticity of the report claiming the plane "hovered" for three hours. There is no FAA in Nigeria but NCAA. You ask people not to rush to judge but you are the one showing how easy it is to rush to judgment. The picture for example of your rash judgment was taken at the inauguration flight. Conclusively, you appear to be one of the half illiterates giving this country a lot of problems.

I AM NOT SUPRISED THAT PEOPLE

I AM NOT SUPRISED THAT PEOPLE WHO DO NOT VALUE THEIR LIVES WOULD FLY THROUGH THAT AIRPORT.
THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS THAT UDUAGHAN IS A FRAUD BY EVERY STANDARD AND IT HAS BEEN WIDELY REPORTED THAT EVERYTHING ABOUT THAT AIRPORT TO DATE IS FRAUD.

CHECKOUT THE OWNERSHIP OF OVERLAND(DIRECT AND PROXY) AND YOU WILL NOT BE SURPRISED WHY CAPTAIN BOYO KEEP RISKING PASSENGERS AND CREW LIVES THROUGH THAT AIRPORT.

THE TRUE DELTA STATE PEOPLE WOULD DO DUE DILIGENCE ON OVERLAND WHEN THE TIME COMES FOR US TO RECOVER ALL OUR STOLEN WEALTH!
THE BASTARD CALLED UDUAGHAN MUST ACCOUNT.

Senseless Planning by Nigerian Authorities!

When this Asaba (International) Airport was being built one wondered the rationale for that. Must every State of the country own an international airport? This is the same thing happening to education where every State and private individual want to own a university when the existing ones are begging for thorough rehabilitation. Why must Nigeria continue to do things very senselessly? The nation pumps money into White Elephant projects while important ones are neglected and left to rot! Benin to Asaba by air miles is almost a trifle; why not develop the Benin Airport to an international standard? After all the Benin Airport is not for Edo people; it is a Federal Government property which all Nigerians could use! Nigeria, please wake up!

Which Airport?

I am a professional who has worked on the building of many international and regional airports in and outside Nigeria; there is no airport in Asaba. I regularly visit Asaba, I was there last week and there is nothing like an airport. The runway and apron have not been built to a specification that can carry aircraft traffic. The topography is dangerous also, hills are too close to the airport, the runway is elevated on a fill instead of being on flat terrain.
There are no navigational aids (ILC, radar, radio...etc). Any professional can bring out many more defects in the so called International Airport. It is not even comparable to the old Warri airstrip.
If flights continue to that '' airport'', people are going to die, as simple as that.

Shame on Sahara junk journalism

Shame on sahara junk journalists.I have flown to Lagos airport too many time and they could not reach the control tower immediately. We had to circle the Lagos airport for what seemed like eternity befor we were lucky to contact the control tower. This has happened to me twice.I know it would have happened to other people in other flights too.I wonder why sahara report would single out Asaba airport for such shameful calumny.Well, i am not suprised, it is from sahara report.

Ochie, I advice you to continue to fly from uncompleted Asaba Ai

My advice to you Ochie is to continue to fly from the Asaba International Airport. After all, if your plane crashes and you die what is some other person's problem except you die alone. You parasites of Delta State milking the people with stolen money given to you by rogue Governor Uduaghan

@Hummm. 1.Nice observation.

@Hummm.
1.Nice observation. 3hrs hovering na wao, what if there was not fuel in the plane of it malfunctioned and also note it is said the Gov and his Cohorts never use the said airport.its a shame this country ran by thugs & rouges masquerading as Govs.
2.GEJ 's decision making is heavily compromised, a minister who has not aviation background verbally and maybe technically certifies an airport without radar.
3.The Senate needs to look into this issue before people state dieing, they cannot not say they've not heard. There has to a probe on the amount spent

VERY POOR JOURNALISM IN BAD TASTE

From your report it is obvious that no "AIR CRASH WAS AVERTED". When a plane can not land at a given airport for any reason, it moves to the nearest safe airport, in this instance Benin Airport. Your report is a plus for Asaba Airport and the Overland Airline. It is clear demonstration/statement that both give top priority to the safety of air passengers. Asaba Airport has come to stay whether you like it or not. I have had the opportunity to fly to Asaba from Lagos with Overland but due to bad weather, we could not land and the pilot flew us back to Lagos. Why was this particular incident not reported by you as an AIR CRASH AVERTED?

The right thing to do is for

The right thing to do is for the travelling public under the auspecies of any interested body be it labour, civil liberty union, flight attendants or what ever to go to high court and obtain an injunction to stop the use of the airport until it can be cerified safe. Decision will be reached based on technical facts, devoid of political manipulation. I hope the judiciary will not consider such an issue a subject for bribe taking.

BED BELLEISM.

really sad,the level some people will go to discredit a good job. but whether they like it or not,the asaba airport has come to stay.

WHO IS WORSE, THE INEPT PILOT OR THE MALFUNCTION EQUIPMENT ?

ISNT IT COMMON SENSE THAT ONCE YOU'VE LOST COMMUNICATION WITH THE RECEIVING AIRPORT, YOU IMMEDIATELY CONTACT THE NEAREST AIRPORT AND LAND THERE ? SO, WHY ON EARTH WOULD THIS CRAZY PILOT HOVER AN AIRPORT FOR 3 GOOD HOURS AND JEOPARDIZE THE LIVES OF HIS PASSENGERS?. HE SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO TAKE OTHERS WITH HIM, IF HE IS SUICIDAL. WHAT A MORONIC MOVE AND WHO DOES THAT ? THIS IS THE REASON PLANE CRASH OCCURS DUE TO PILOT ERROR. FAA NEEDS TO INVESTIGATE AND SUSPEND HIS @SS. THIS ACTION WILL NEVER BE TOLERATED IN A DEVELOPED COUNTRY. IT WILL BE GROUNDS FOR HIS SUSPENSION. AS FOR COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT FAILURE , FAA ALSO NEEDS TO CONDUCT AN INVESTIGATION, AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION AS NEEDED. PEOPLE SHOULD NOT RUSH TO JUDGEMENT , THIS IS NOT THE FIRST LANDING OF A PLANE AT THIS AIRPORT. I BET THE PASSENGERS ARE TRAUMATIZED. THE AUDACITY OF THE PILOT POSING FOR A PICTURE AND THERE IS NOTHING HEROIC ABOUT HIS ACTION. STUPID !!!

A good suggestion.

Don't let your ambitions come first when it comes to public matters because your actions would tell about where
you come from. Its unfair to your position to risk fellow Nigerian's lives at the expense of your political ambiton. Think twice, think Delta State and its citizens. Think Nigeria.

leave Delta State alone

Pls leave Delta state alone, this thing happen
Every where so why is Asaba airport so special. .

I was at the airport that

I was at the airport that Friday the issue was bad weather.I boarded Arik to Lagos. This is no longer politics it is demonism.

A FAKED REPORT BY AN UNEDUCATED REPORTER

I think the editors at SAHARAMALREPORTERS are not worth their salt. An aircraft hovering Asaba for THREE HOURS. Flights from Lagos and Abuja last 45, 50 minutes respectively; meanwhile a pilot hovered for three hours. It is very clear that you have an agenda and doing the bidding of your clients. Having seen through your manufactured reports, Nigerians are now very skeptical of whatever you write, like this rubbish you published as story. And of course, your uneducated reporter (abi na stinger sef?) in Asaba is a fraud, looking for relevance which he will not get.

three hours in the air circling

hey here we go again. sexing incidents of these nature up will only help[ to discredit the report or incident. what type or model of a commutter plane will fly and cycle in the air for three hours, then add one more hour it tales to fly to the airport and then 30 minutes to flt to benin airport and the plane was able to land. thats is absolutly incredible. that plane would have crash. short hops aircraft use for such short length runways cant fly for more that two hours before refueling and at any rate the pilot would have landed on the benin- to what ever road that connect those cities.

sa verify and modify the use of words in your news content so as not to lose credibility

This is shame on Nigeria

This is shame on Nigeria government. How on earth will a country will allow aircrafts to operate in an helipath called INTERNATINAL AIRPORT even when not completed.Nigeria is actualy been ruled by fools really

UDUAGHAM STOP IT!

Stop playing with people's lives. Can you create a life?
