Police Arrest JAF Leaders Over Protest of Commercial Motorbike Restriction in Lagos

Police and JAf activists argue during the protest today in Lagos
By SaharaReporters, New York

Shortly after a street protest in which demonstrators reiterated their call for the new Lagos State traffic law to be reversed, the police today arrested members of the Joint Action Front [JAF], the union which led the action.

It was a strange twist in the day’s activities because the policemen had been with the protesters during a similar protest on Monday, with no incidents, only to turn around and arrest the leaders of JAF today after the group successfully staged a peaceful protest.

The arrest, glaringly an after-thought, was ordered by DCP Tunde Sobulo, who was physically with the protesters in the short distance marched from the NLC building towards Ojuelegba bus terminal.  In that period, he agreed that the demonstrators had a right to protest, warning only against any violence.

Making the arrests, Mr. Sobulo curiously said that they lacked the right to embark on the protest.

Among those in police custody is the chairman of JAF, Dr. Dipo Fashina, and its Secretary, Comrade Abiodun Aremu.  Members of JAF arrested along with them include Hassan Taiwo Soweto, Segun Oladunni and Usman Oloyede.

The arrested protest organizers are currently being detained at the Lagos Police Command in Ikeja.
A text message from JAF’s General secretary states as follows:

"What exactly happend was dat we had a successful procession & rallies and I was driving out of Olajuwon St Yaba by NLC headquarters in my car with four other occupants when about 5 bus loads armed police forced Dr. Fashina & Usman Oloyede out of my car to a police bus and 2 policemen enterd my car and forced us to drive to their police command. We were never arrested at the protest venue.

The national Human Rghts Commission lawyers are here with us already". -Comrade Abiodun Aremu, JAF Sec

haba JAF

ddoes JAF know the menace that all these Okada has caused in Nigeria, the North is even worse Boko haram is gaining ground with the use of bike to kill innocent Nigerians.
Its right time to do this, i mean ban okada.

Do you know that okada has been banned in both warri and asaba. Life has been going on without stress. There has been no protest of any sort.Adapt or die okada riders.

The civil society group is a fraud

There are civilize ways to debate issues with the Lagos state legislators. Disrupting public peace over policy issues that the Lagos state legislators considered in the interest of their state is petty. Okada drivers/riders are menace to Lagos state, and to Nigeria in general. Dealing with okada menace is a lose-lose situation for other road users. Okada drivers have sent many citizens to their early graves. Besides, driving Okada for a living is a form of under employment, and should not be a form of employment in the 21st century. Our moribund trade schools/technical colleges should be revitalized to offer courses that re-educate/retrain our artisans, who are mostly Okada drivers. Part of the reasons they became okada drivers, I suspect, is out of desperation to eke out a living.I believe there are ways to find a mutually acceptable solution to this impasse; one of which is retraining Okada drivers-- impacting them with 21st century skill sets.

Lagos state goverment I

Lagos state goverment I think is the right time BAN Okada finally. We dont want them in Lagos any more. They just invaded Lagos from other states. Why cannt they protest in Abuja when they ban them. Lagos should stop allowing all these Armed Robbers to over ride them. I have never see a country like Nigeria where people dont have respect for the Law. How do we move forward, too many criminals every where.

Okada Protest

I believe they are jobless, only looking for cheap popularity. Let them rot in detention. Must they be consulted for a validly passed law.

Lagos protects

Yeye human right group qho had nothing doing like Dino and co. They have no respect for law they pretend to defend.

I have no idea why Fashola is not bold to do a COMPLETE JOB. It is not in the interest of the people of Lagos for OKADA to be allowed. OKADA RIDERS are thieves, kidnappers and bank robbers. They are lawless, reckless, careless, toutish, thugish, disrespectul, dangerous and a menace to other road users. They have caused so many untimely deaths. Since the advent of Okada, things have ceased to be at ease. FASHOLA SHOULD BE BOLD and BAN THEM TOTALLY and COMPLETELY from LAGOS. Bayelsa is at Peace. Calabar and Abuja are at peace. Lagis needs peace too.

Regardless of what you think

Regardless of what you think it is bang out of other for people who are holding a peaceful demostration to be arrested, it a sad joke no human right and the see the fat disgrace of a cop pure shame ....

What are they protesting about? They all are very stupid, are they saying that they are bigger than the law? A competent court of law had sanctioned the law and yet they run up and down the street, are they street urchins or touts? WHATEVER NIGERIANS LEARN FROM OTHER COUNTRIES TURNS TO BE SOMETHING ELSE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY.

Everything in Nigeria now is all about

Strike, protest, sit at home, don't go to work and so on,but the question is this: Has it ever worked? Please, let them go and find something else to do and feed their families,OKADA has done a lot of damage to us in this country. Must we drive Okada to succeed in Nigeria? SHAME!! SALE YOUR BIKE AND BUY KEKE since we must all drive Okada. Nonsense!

Let them spend 48hrs in a

Let them spend 48hrs in a crowded cell with plenty of mosquitoes then, den go know say kakhi no be leather. Some of us are tired of Okada....let LASG ban Okada completely from all streets.
